I can't express how grateful I am to you Gary. I am a complete beginner, and your videos have been invaluable. With your help, I am successfully (so far) growing tomatoes, celery, cucumbers, and lettuce!!! You are a treasure! THANK YOU SO MUCH! P.S. I watched your video on blueberries and today I planted my very first blueberry Bush! 😁
Hello. I am about to plant blueberry and raspberry bushes, I purchased 2 diff varieties of blueberries. How are your blueberry bushes doing. Have they survived for 6 years? I hope they are FLORISHING and providing you lots of fruit. Any suggestions from your experiences? ❤😊
Wow, this is filled with useful information,. I just started a mini garden this year, my first. And have already harvested beans, cucumbers and have 1 crooked neck yellow squash. I've been finding squash bugs and eggs and hatched babies, which give me the creeps. And I've been killing the adults and cutting off the leaves and dropping them in soapy water. I did not know about mint oil though. It's not to late to correct my problems thankfully. Thanks for sharing.
Heands down, possibly the best vid on yt. Very deep level yet easy to follow for new folks. Take notes yall! This is gold! Love the pruning and symbiotic growing methods. "Smells" are higher level stuff, wonderful. Your "leveling of pruning" is perfect. I'll be sharing this with everyone. Well done! To add, herbs. A follow up would be great, maybe you already have one lol.
Thank you, the peppermint spray has entirely cleaned up my garden. I am using about 3 drops in half a gallon and it is amazing. Also, my peroxide mix is about a teaspoon per gallon and its fine. Less is more, for sure!
Your video was very helpful! Thank you. I wondered if anyone has ever eaten fried squash blooms? They are sooooo good! You rinse/wash the picked bloom. Make a dipping mixture of egg and milk. After dipping in egg mixture, dredge them in flour and fry in oil. Delicious! It works with both the male and female blooms. Be sure you pick the good healthy blooms and watch out for bees! And don’t pick too many or you won’t have any squash!

I watched this video last year and that’s how I found out what squash bugs are and what they were doing to my squash plant. Unfortunately the problem got out of hand and just devastated my garden. I don’t have the courage to squish the squash bugs with my bare hands or fingers. However this year, since I knew what to look out for, the squash bugs did take one of my plants but I was able to destroy all the eggs on a second plant and was able to fight the few bugs that I found with some dust. Hopefully I will have butternut squash this year. I will definitely look into the peppermint spray and companion planting. Thank you for your help. I’ve learned so much from you.
Good luck. They are a nuisance. Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Great video!! Tremendous detail and it all looks perfectly doable. I’m growing zucchini for the first time in about a decade this summer, so I’m really hanging on your every word. Thanks again!

Good explanation on how to care for zucchini and squash. I just planted mine in new locations this year because I lost a lot to squash bugs last year. I swore to watch them daily to keep them in check. I’m going to use your video as my guide this year. Thank you

I planted some marigold and 3 of them dissapeared overnight! Something eat the whole plants. I think it may be slugs. Then 3 more just turned black and died! 😒
I used to do that when I had a regular garden and I swear I had the most amazing garden! Now I have just a raised garden bed and I need to figure out how to have some marigolds because my garden has suffered😢

Oh you are the best. Another “expert” was telling people to just break off leaves (with fingers) that crossed over others and prevented air flow and bees from finding powers. He did not say about treating the “wound” which is logical unless you trim where the stem is NOT HOLLOW. All the other care tips are fantastic too.

Gary,... absolutely love your vids.... so much good info. You've got a wonderful teaching spirit. Just started gardening again after 10 years. I didn't have a computer then so lots of aggravation with no answers. After a lengthy stint in the hospital I was chomping at the bit to get back in the soil... also have had chickens for the last couple years so soil has improved. Anyway, this afternoon I was checking all my plants and saw some critter that I didn't know what it was and gave it to my chickens hoping I wasn't feeding them any beneficial insect. I asked the Lord if I made a mistake and ironically when I came in the house this vid was the first one I watched and learned almost immediately that I fed them my only lacewing!! ergh!! But now I know. Thank you for all the detail you show and the close-ups of good & bad insects

My squash plants did great last year by planting cilantro and radishes around them. Don't pull the cilantro and radishes out when they blossom and set seeds. Wait until the squash is completely killed by freezing temperatures or the squash bugs and aphids will come back. This works for brassicas, too.

Gary, are you using peppermint oil (as in essential oil) or peppermint extract? I've got some pruning to do on my squash and have already had a bout with the spider mites. If I can avoid other pests, that would be great.

Gary thank you for your videos. Having problems with squash fiorming and not growing. Just very small. Also discarded one I thought had blossom end rot and just may not have been properly pollinated. Yesterday I pruned my plants and then put down some diatomaceous earth to protect the cut areas. This morning I had lots of open male blooms which I had not been seeing. Hopefully pollination is coming. Thanks again,
I have a huge amount of mint plants. They spread like wild fire so I do thin twice a year. Tomatoes an squash, overall; a great companion but it does involve some effort. Sage, oregano an lavender are also some of my friends with great uses that are to many to mention lol.
After cutting off lower leaves and damaged leaves, Spray undersides of plants with water first, wash away insects and scare away good insects. Spray undersides of leaves lightly with peppermint oil. Shake container vigorously and spray next plant. PEPPERMINT OIL SPRAY: 1 drop + 2 oz water + 1-2 drops of liquid soap OR 1/2 - 3/4 tsp + 1 gallon water + tiny amount of liquid soap (start with 1/8-1/4 tsp).
Thanks Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much
Fantastic advice!... especially about unpollinated fruit. I was worried I was doing something wrong. A DIY spray that has proven itself time and again to me is 85% water ,15% rubbing alcohol and 1 tbsp of dish soap ( I use mellaluca brand) . Gifted a plant from a box store and brought home spider mites :( sprayed the poo outta it with this mix with no I'll effects to the daisy plant! It also worked fantastic with an aphid problem I developed. (I watch out for my good bugs though :)
hi Gary, i have a potted zucchini right now but the stem is only about 4-5 inches long. how do i train it to go up the tomato cage if it's so short? do i need to stake it for now until it's tall enough to reach the bottom rung?

I bought the need oil actually bought 2 before I realized this stuff is gold! I had knats bad inside after bringing in my veggies, life was hell especially at night they would get blood thirsty, don't believe them when they say they don't bite, they definitely do. Tacky strips helped but not enough when you have them hatching every day out of 25+ houseplants. I only had to treat them 2x but I didn't realize I should've worn gloves. It was too difficult when you are rubbing in on every leaf on rubber trees, spider plants, jade and so on, it would take me a whole evening but all that diligence paid off! My question is how long can it be stored? Thank you again!
Once mixed I try and use with in a couple days. I don't know how long exactly. In the bottle it has a 2 season shelf life. I Am a beginner and growing in grow bags. Had beautiful cucumber and zucchini plants, flowering and everything. I came out one morning and I had little black spec looking bugs eating both. The cucumber plant leaves actually had holes all on alot of it. I sprayed with neem oil. And fed it 10-10-10 slow release. I believe I have messed up. I feel so bad. I wish I had seen your video sooner. I guess I am going to wait and let nature take it course because I'm sure I have really stressed my plants. But I have a question. How often do you cut bad leaves off and feed the fish emulsion? I do have that which I was using first but someone told me to use 10-10-10. Thank you for your video!!
I think you okay. Fish emulsion every 7-14 days based on plant size. Little bugs might be flea beetles As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases. Thank You Gary, Zone 5 (Maine) here so getting ready to put this advice to use! Fortunately we don't have many pests or disease here. I do have a few small striped beetles and i just hand pick them out. Look forward to trying peppermint spray.
if you have having slugs problems, grind up some egg shells and lay them on the soil. The sharp edges of the crushed egg shells will be too painful for slugs to crawl, so they will avoid your garden! that being said, you need a lot of egg shells to cover your soil! I hope this hepls
If you can have ducks or turkey’s they helped our mulched perennial garden by reducing the slug population we ended up with a couple years after mulching much of our 2.5 acres of property with fresh tree mulch.
@@jackiechristabel3190 I have heard surrounding a plant that is attracting slugs with copper, even copper pennies will detract them from crossing the plant. Hmmmm??? 😕

Great info as always! Could you tell me please if I can transplant a large squash plant without damaging the one next to it? I made a mistake of sowing 2 plants together and now they are so big. It's my first time.
Nope. The damage to the roots is pretty massive. Best to replant a seed in new place. Removing the plant damages both plants. you could prune one and keep it small.
Gary, thank you so much. I just pruned it. I have two more in separated container. In one of them some small squash were rotted. I added egg shell powder.
how to kill a bug "reach in, grab it and smash it, and now that will die." "oh he's still moving after I smAshed him... one more? *smash* alright, I got him. He's dead."
I love your videos. Hay I suggest that you use an emulsifier when you try to mix essential oils with water, otherwise the oil affects you leaves and you get these white spots and streaks.

Hey Gary. Thanks for the video. When you are fertilizing with your water solubles, including the worm casting tea, how often are you feeding? And just for clarification, you are keeping all your fertilizers at or below 5-5-5 for your squash/zucchini?
Why did you decide to plant your zucchini in those containers as opposed to directly in the ground? I started mine from seed in my greenhouse, but have yet to transplant them into the ground/ a container.
Hi Gary, Im a little confused, I grow the zucchini and squash in ground and pots, how do I know when the plant will not produce any more and I should remove it from the garden? I seem to get one or 2 fruits per plant, but dont know if I should leave it because it may produce more, can you clear this up? TY for all the hard work!

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) exactly how do you manually pollinate these plants? Could you possibly consider doing a video on self pollination? Many thanks!
I had really bad vine borers last year in my garden boxes. They overtook all my zuccs and cucumbers. I read that they lay dormant all winter and will be back again so I'm afraid to replant zuccs in those boxes again. Do I need to get rid of all the soil in the garden boxes or just use them for tomatoes and move my zuccs and cucumbers into pots?
Do the male stems/flowers serve any purpose if they don't pollinate the female flowers and never fruit? If not, can we prune those off? Also, is there any benefit to keeping the stem of a damaged leaf?
Thanks so much for your support! Cheers & Thanks, Gary!

@Q Anon I would think FOOD GRADE PEPPERMINT. FOR SURE.
@Q Anon dawn soap works well. 🍀
I just purchased (my first) a small greenhouse. Any recommendations?
I can't express how grateful I am to you Gary. I am a complete beginner, and your videos have been invaluable. With your help, I am successfully (so far) growing tomatoes, celery, cucumbers, and lettuce!!! You are a treasure! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
P.S. I watched your video on blueberries and today I planted my very first blueberry Bush! 😁
So good! Glad to help and keep growing.
I really appreciate the time you devote to sharing your knowledge, Gary
Thank you, the peppermint spray has entirely cleaned up my garden. I am using about 3 drops in half a gallon and it is amazing. Also, my peroxide mix is about a teaspoon per gallon and its fine. Less is more, for sure!
So good to hear and nice job on finding the effective minimum does for your garden.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I need a variety of seeds, do you have something I can buy like cucumbers, squash, zucchini peppers, broccoli some fruits??
Your video was very helpful! Thank you. I wondered if anyone has ever eaten fried squash blooms? They are sooooo good! You rinse/wash the picked bloom. Make a dipping mixture of egg and milk. After dipping in egg mixture, dredge them in flour and fry in oil. Delicious! It works with both the male and female blooms. Be sure you pick the good healthy blooms and watch out for bees! And don’t pick too many or you won’t have any squash!
I never have. And always say I going too

I grow marigolds alongside my veggies, so I have no problems with bugs. They hate the smell of marigolds.
Or mosquitoes. The marigolds hate
I planted some marigold and 3 of them dissapeared overnight! Something eat the whole plants. I think it may be slugs. Then 3 more just turned black and died! 😒
Which type of marigold? I have french marigolds all over the yard but I still have so many whiteflies, leafhoppers, aphids and thrips.
I used to do that when I had a regular garden and I swear I had the most amazing garden! Now I have just a raised garden bed and I need to figure out how to have some marigolds because my garden has suffered😢

Gary,... absolutely love your vids.... so much good info.

In the past when I've tried to blast off aphids with water the aphids are back the next day.

I have a huge amount of mint plants. They spread like wild fire so I do thin twice a year. Tomatoes an squash, overall; a great companion but it does involve some effort. Sage, oregano an lavender are also some of my friends with great uses that are to many to mention lol.
i didnt know they get rotten when not pollinated.thanks for information. im lerning so much from U.
Yep. That is typically what happens.

Thanks!

Little bugs might be flea beetles

I had a bad experience with marigolds. they attracted slugs which destroyed everything ! I am going to try your peppermint trick this year.
if you have having slugs problems, grind up some egg shells and lay them on the soil. The sharp edges of the crushed egg shells will be too painful for slugs to crawl, so they will avoid your garden! that being said, you need a lot of egg shells to cover your soil! I hope this hepls

Great video, great tips, thanks for sharing
Great info as always! Could you tell me please if I can transplant a large squash plant without damaging the one next to it? I made a mistake of sowing 2 plants together and now they are so big. It's my first time.
Nope. The damage to the roots is pretty massive. Best to replant a seed in new place. Removing the plant damages both plants. you could prune one and keep it small.
Gary, thank you so much. I just pruned it. I have two more in separated container. In one of them some small squash were rotted. I added egg shell powder.
Awesome I love the essential oil aspect too
Thanks

So. should you plant peppermint plants and marigolds in and around the garden to keep bad insects away? Seem like a good thing to do.
I found it can help a bit but the exposed oils seems to do best. You need the old heirloom marigolds too with the strong scent.
How often should you feed your plants? Weekly, monthly or once after planting?
Only like to 2 times and thats it
how to kill a bug
"reach in, grab it and smash it, and now that will die."
"oh he's still moving after I smAshed him... one more? *smash* alright, I got him. He's dead."
I don't kill bugs. They are part of nature.
*shudders
Yuk
@@marymarth7298 sounds logical. I don't cut my grass or pull weeds for the same reason.
@@pressedearth9492 you guys mustve never had a bad season of spider mites then...literally destroyed most of my garden a few years back lol
What you recommend to prevent and treat vine bore. I lost all my squash last year because of them
where do I find the peppermint oil? Nice video very informative! thanks for sharing!
I love your videos. Hay I suggest that you use an emulsifier when you try to mix essential oils with water, otherwise the oil affects you leaves and you get these white spots and streaks.
I have a squash plant in a container and ran out of stakes now it's fallen over I'm not sure if it's a bush or not being my 1st time I didn't realize( much to learn) Will it kill my plant? idk what to do it has already been producing. Thanks for all your great info😎
Congrats on your first garden. It wont kill it but they do get beat up. If it is producing, youll get some good ones. Start some new seeds now for replacements.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you so much that gives me hope I've already started seeds maybe this time I can get help staking them.👍😎
Love your videos. Very helpful!
A finger condom or the rubber thing that goes around your finger to help you turn paper pages works excellent to remove squash bug eggs.
Nice

Hey Gary. Thanks for the video. When you are fertilizing with your water solubles, including the worm casting tea, how often are you feeding? And just for clarification, you are keeping all your fertilizers at or below 5-5-5 for your squash/zucchini?
I haven’t seen this before you planted the plant in a large pot below the ground. Is there a benefit to doing this?
I kind of dig that myself .. I might have to try it out.
Why did you decide to plant your zucchini in those containers as opposed to directly in the ground? I started mine from seed in my greenhouse, but have yet to transplant them into the ground/ a container.
and what size containers?
Hi Gary, Im a little confused, I grow the zucchini and squash in ground and pots, how do I know when the plant will not produce any more and I should remove it from the garden? I seem to get one or 2 fruits per plant, but dont know if I should leave it because it may produce more, can you clear this up? TY for all the hard work!
If they are green and healthy, they will keep going. If they look beat up and shabby, toss them.

With a lack of bees can you self pollinate using a cue tip or your finger?
You can yep.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) exactly how do you manually pollinate these plants? Could you possibly consider doing a video on self pollination? Many thanks!
@@bonniehoke-scedrov4906 You pick a male flower and push its stamen into the female flowers.
GREAT INFORMATION ON THIS QUESTION. ☺
I use a small paint brush with a long handle so it’s easier to reach male and then female flower when self pollinating my garden.
Hey Gary, thank you for all that info. Another newbie here. I want to try this. How tall are those tomato cages that you’re using?
I had really bad vine borers last year in my garden boxes. They overtook all my zuccs and cucumbers. I read that they lay dormant all winter and will be back again so I'm afraid to replant zuccs in those boxes again. Do I need to get rid of all the soil in the garden boxes or just use them for tomatoes and move my zuccs and cucumbers into pots?
SO I dont know if that is true. But it is a good idea to move plants around.
I have read that it is true. I keep getting them every year. It must be true.
Do the male stems/flowers serve any purpose if they don't pollinate the female flowers and never fruit? If not, can we prune those off?
Also, is there any benefit to keeping the stem of a damaged leaf?
