I watched your video, went and bought a cattle panel, posts and post pusher. Husband came home, put it up and we love it. Just need to put up more. We decided to make extra gardens by the street this year and offer free tomatoes and maybe cucumbers. We'll have our own in the back gardens. I had an herb/flower/vegetable/floral design business for 20 years and closed it some years back. Now in old age, we are 71 and 80 (still healthy and vigorous) we have decided to start growing again and also sharing with passersby. I think kind gestures are a way of connecting and giving back after what our world has been through this winter/spring. Happy growing everyone. Thank you Roots and Refuge for the great videos. Write that book! Update 3/7/22. I lost my prince last August at 82. He is sorely missed but would want me to keep doing everything we loved together. I'm now 73, getting ready to garden in the spring, painting and writing and learning to produce videos!
Jess, you are bringing LIFE and inspiration to our “stay at home order” days! Thanks to you, we have direction for how to come together as a family and produce something abundant and of value, during a time of such uncertainty. We appreciate you, and feel so blessed to have found you and your videos! You have a beautiful garden, and an incredible heart! Keep shining!! ~Aly
I don’t have a food garden, want to, but I love my plants. Watching you made me smile. You give off such a vibrant and soothing feeling. Your smile and demeanor is, pure and sweet. You remind me of my cousin, truly beautiful inside and out. Thank you for your vids!
It must be nice to be naturally beautiful, caring and sharing with a ton of gardening knowledge to boot! I have learned a lot from your videos and appreciate the time you take to make them and share them with us ~ Thanks!
My new veggie garden is being planted and laid out - and yes! I have your arched trellises up and a couple of flat uprights for beans and peas! You're ABSOLUTELY an inspiration! I sat my husband down and showed him your videos and he got busy with the arches and uprights yesterday! I'm SO SO excited! Thank you a thousand times! Much love from South Africa!
Me too. Years ago, I had 3 panels, laid 2 beside each other, zip tied the center and made a long teepee. Then the other one I thought would be cool as an arch. I tied one end to a fence, tied rope on the other end and pulled it over till a nice arch. I tied the bottoms together (but about 4' apart) so I could move it anywhere. This was before it was such a big deal!
I hope you’re enjoying your vaca away from UA-cam. Watching as many videos as I can to help the algorithm. We love ya, Jess! ❤ Also, I just adore the relationship you and Miah have. Many years of love and happiness I have got to see through the years of heartbreak, change, and new beginnings. So cool ❤
Great video. But I use a long auger bit on my drill to drill the holes into the ground for the t posts. A 12 inch hole for the T post takes about 20 minutes including scooping up the loosened soil. I'm a 67 year old woman with back problems so a heavy T Post driver is out of the question. Letting the drill do all the work saves my back, neck and shoulders.
The t-post driver is really hard for me, especially in the raised beds. I don't have the strength to bring it down hard enough when its up above my shoulders like that. Thats a great tip about the drill. I'll keep that in mind if ever I don't have a helping hand around!
Sandy James, what a wonderful idea! I’m a 65 yr old gardener suffering from a degenerative neuro-muscular disease and can’t even pick up the post hole driver 😡 but I’ve no doubt I can handle a drill with auger bit. Thanks.
Glad to help. I have dry, hard dirt so I had to wet the soil first to make it much easier. I had to wet the ground and let it soak in, drill, remove excess dirt, wet again and repeat until you have a 12 inch hole, which is the recommended depth for a 6 ft t post.
I use cattle panels for so many different projects around the farm. I sometimes call them handy panels they are solid and inexpensive. Your garden is beautiful thank you for sharing!
We love cattle panels! Actually, make good use of discarded metal fence wire, too.... have scrounged old wire fencing for many projects over the years. One place we lived and kept ducks, had a 4’ chain link fence around 1/3 acre. Good start, but needed more to contain poultry. We used recycled 4’ wide wire fence, bent it into an arch lengthwise, then overlaid that with smaller mesh chicken wire. Zip tied the mesh tunnel to the chain link fence for support, and staked and zip tied the tunnel to the stakes along the edge facing the yard, to prevent predators lifting it. The tunnel must be tall enough for the poultry to fully stand, and wide enough for them to expand their wings. The chicken wire must be small enough to prevent chicks or ducklings escaping. Our ducks loved running the circumference of the yard..far more room than many so-called “free range” places give. They ate bugs, plants,. We’d let them out into the yard to go after bugs and slugs in spring as bugs and slugs started proliferating. Then herd them back into their tunnel and nest box shed safety. Did same in fall after seasonal plants were done. In the 10 years keeping them, that was the best and safest containment we did for poultry, which required least effort, least maintenance. Happy ducks!
You are simply ADORABLE, and SO inspiring! Because of you I am ready to start my little homestead! Thank you also, for being so real and upfront about how to save money with all the basic necessities of planting. I absolutely adore your transparency, and your incredible knowledge on so many subjects. I am blessed to have found you and very grateful. May you go super duper (😉) far - above and beyond your wildest dreams. THANK YOU for teaching us so well ❤ And thank you for simply being "you." Blessings to you and your family.
I have watched your videos for years now. I came across this one today (which is before I started watching you guys), and I LOL’ed so hard with Jeremiah’s reaction to standing under that cattle panel for you 😂. You guys are so comfortable in front of the camera now. You guys are amazing. You’re growth amazes me. Watching these videos reminds me that although I get frustrated that my garden is small and not ideal, one day, it won’t be. ❤ thank you
I am dying with your models LOLLLL. I didn't sleep well last night so woke up not feeling well, but then got a very good laugh while watching your video, now I am feeling good. Thank you so much
I have a 2y/o grape vine in the corner of my back yard. I was looking for a trellis for it but they are ridiculously expensive! Plus I wanted it to grow high enough to give me some privacy. I was at a loss until I saw your video. Thank you so much! I know have a TON of ideas! Awesome video!
About a year ago i watched this video and was absolutely inspired to build arched trellises in my raised beds, a year later I'm still using them and haven't seen a better example for them thank you so much for the garden inspiration i will never forget 😌💕
So happy that I stumbled upon your channel. I am thinking ahead to projects for the coming year. I love the trellised garden, it's so pretty too! Thank you for your posts. It's lovely to see you and your husband and your neighbor working together.
Oh my goodness guys. Your videos are so charming and enjoyable!! Thank you for doing this video because my daughter has been wanting to plant grapes but I felt so overwhelmed with the idea of building one of these for them to grow. This makes it so much more relatable and doable. I cannot wait to do it on my yard!!
I just had this random thought of having archway in my backyard and just kinda randomly typed archway and got your video. Now I know how to do archway and got clarity on how it gonna look. Thanks a tonn❤
Mentioned the cattle panel trellises to my neighbor who wanted to share a garden in my garden. He went out and bought eight hog panels and installed them all together in a line. He liked them so much that he went out the next morning to buy eight more and installed. Two eight panel long trellises! Planted tomatoes at each post, beans, cukes and squash all along. Thank you for the idea!

OMG! You've just given me the perfect solution for my peering perv neighbor. He sits outback and watches me while I'm gardening in my yard. I already have every thing I need. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this video!
This is the video that was sent to me by my daughter many years ago. Jess hooked me & now a lifetime fan!!! I have seen every video multiple times! Thanks for all the inspiration, Jess!!
Wonderful 🌻 I could see putting a panel at the back of a couple panels and adding a bench or chairs to make a great rest spot all covered with various scented vines.
When I found you all I became addicted to your videos. I am an old (85) gardener but always looking for new ways of doing things and your cattle panel arch was my new thing. I waited until my daughter and son in law came and they put it up for me. Now they have two at their place in CT. I have authored three books on Lasagna Gardening and wish I had been able to include this in one of them. Thanks so much.
What a wonderful idea & thank you for all the info. Now I know what to do down the side of my house. We'd planned some raised garden beds down one side next to the pathway. I'll erect arches all the way down. It's lovely & sunny along there. I'll find a way to secure the arch to the path side by the house. Many best wishes & greetings from South Australia. 😃❤🖐🇦🇺
Lol! What class of zip Ties?! Look for the ones that are UV-resistant, IF you want them to last more than a couple to few years in weather....especially if exposed to sun. They get brittle. The UV-resistant zip ties are harder to find in the numerous zip tie displays at big box hardware stores, and those do last several years more when exposed to weather. Love the cattle panel arches!
I love this! We have a 2 acre homestead, micro farm in SC. I also used raised beds in my 2000sq ft garden. I’d like to add this trellis between my raised beds. Genius!
It surprises me that more people dont garden. I live in a area where people have acres and most don’t grow anything. My small garden produces a amazing amount of food. I am going to try and go upwards, thank you for the vids great ideas
In my 20's I used to do a bit of veg gardening. This pandemic has me now in my 50's going back to it so I've just discovered your channel here on UA-cam. I have to say I'm getting great tips but more than that pure joy. Love from Canada zone 5b.
I did some very similar to yours this year and I just love them. One $20 cattle panel with three posts and some zip ties is taking care of 10 tomato plants planted alternating on both sides. That's way better than what you'd pay for tomato cages of that strength. Then, I have cucumbers on the bent vertical panels. I love your garden.
It's wonderful, isn't it? I started the bottom rung only about a foot off the ground, but think I'll go for the 18 inches next year. It's so handy to be able to reach under it. On the bent vertical trellis, I bent the cattle panel before putting it in and I have to stand to tippee-toes to reach the cucumbers. I love the smoother arch of these in the video.
Thank you! And I agree, its way more economical to do it this way. I'll never go back to buying cages for a few dollars each, especially because they don't work that well anyway.
@@RootsandRefugeFarm Found you thru Art & Bri. :) Love your down to earth, frugal, and simple methods! I am loving this cattle panel method! I have a bunch of tomato cages, and every year I end up re-enforcing them with tposts... so frustrating. Next year we will be on our homestead, so I think Im gonna ask my husband to get me cattle panels! They will work for so much of what I am planning to grow! Thank you!!
Sewer this was the first video where I came to discover your sweet sweet ways and His blessings upon your Family and Farm. Thanks for the x2 years of beneficial, clear ideas and fun entertainment...in practical terms ♥️
Happened by your video today ! You are just adorable! I like how you explain things in detail, easy to understand. Thank you. I have never planted a garden but my husband had a green thumb. He passed away a couple months ago and I wanted to do something to keep me busy and that I can be proud of! Wish me luck!
We finally did it! After watching this video for a couple of years and wanting to do this. We finally did it! 😊 the beans and cucumbers are growing and so close to heading up the trellis. They're amazing! Thank you for your video! ❤😊❤
I have used cattle panels for pole beans and cucumbers but have to do it by myself, I am 64 lady. Put your posts in ground where you want them then I tie a rope on middle of one end of the panel and holding the rope I walk on the panel to the other end as I pull or bend the first end to me with the rope. now hold on tight or you will be a human sling shot lol. but after you have the ends with in 5 feet or so of each other tie to the side your standing on. you have your arch laying on ground, you can roll that over to your posts fitting the arch upright inside each post and secure to posts with baling wire or zip ties. once its secured in untie your rope! your done!! I love your garden and have learned a lot , thanks so much!
I'm so glad that I found your videos. I have a raised bed that a giant tree fell on top of it when hurricane Maria past though Puerto Rico. It was money wasted, but this fence looks very strong. After the tree is taken out I will start fixing it again. Awesome video. Loved and Subbed.
Just do something called hugelkultur raised bed. You use the tree inside your raised bed, just put it in the bottom and cover with dirt, you need less dirt and the tree will root over the years adding nutrients
Thank you so much for creating and sharing this video! I've installed 2 arched trellises (so far) in my garden and they bring me so much joy! One is supporting cucumber vines and the other is getting established with honeysuckle to create a little shady spot over a vintage garden bench.
Thank you. I came to this video last year, right after that I got a panel for my garden, it work wonderfully. I am adding another one this year. I love both your personalities and your kind neighbor. You are a breath of fresh air.
Couldn't help myslelf...put mine up today. Thank you so much for showing me how I can grow squash and melons in my "compact" dooryard garden. Count me among your ardent new admirers!!
Wow, awesome idea. I thought of the trellis across the raised bed but not on the outside....that really gives you more room and a shady area....really great idea!
I made two! One at my community garden plot and one in my small backyard. I love them and so does everyone who sees them! 😍Thank you, Jess for inspiring and sharing your knowledge. I am in Virginia Beach, VA- zone 8
"Probably 80% of our farm is held together by zip ties." I used to be a zookeeper. 80% of zoos are held together by zip ties, too. They're the greatest invention ever.
I used zip ties to secure chicken wire around my compost frame. Just beware that they DO degrade, get brittle etc. So maybe inspect every couple of years and replace any with problems.
Please help! Looking for cattle panel online, trying not to go to store. What are the dimensions? Are they same as welded wire? When I look on amazon, there’s a lot of deer panel that’s thin, I’m afraid I won’t be able to arch the darn thing. Can someone please link this panel for me? Jess, if you’re free, can you link one on your amazon link please? Thanks a million!
Planning my 2021 garden layout with a lot of new raised beds! I love the cattle panel arches! We are going to do before the makeover and after pics! Jess you and Miah are GREAT teachers
Hey Jess, thank you for sharing. As soon as we have our little piece of land, I will definitely use trellises and arches to do some vertical gardening. We were thinking stuff through about how to build, and we can use your tips and tricks for sure. I found t-posts and cattle panels in some store close to us, so that is covered. Thank you, I bless you. Love from The Netherlands, Diana
Starting my first veggie garden up in the pacific northwest, got about 140 square feet of raised beds and your videos are helping me feel much more confident. Thank-you!
Im in port orchard, good luck with your garden and remember to plant by the moon! I had to replant my corn and pumpkin starts after they froze a few days ago.. arghh timing is everything
Pretty cool ideas! U r great! I love watching n learning things from you!!! Thx for the videos!!! I always appreciate the time n work you put into it!!
I got this great idea from you. Although, the only cattle panels I could find were the heavy duty ones, 5'x16' - 4'x4' squares $75. I wish I could add a photo, I used old cedar decking to make pergola like ends on each side of the bent panel to give it structure. Thanks! T.
I love this. I have a bad back and knees so I didn't plant last year, but this would make it possible for me. I'd love to see what materials you use to make your raised beds. Thank you.
Very informative video. Thank you for showing how to do this it is a big help to our garden. Was wondering if you have compost bins and if you could explain on how to start one or use them? It would be a great help we are planning on expanding our garden and are not sure on how to compost. Can't wait for next video!!
This is the first video I watched of yours nearly 4 years ago now and you inspired my heart so much. It has been such a blessing to watch your channel grow and see the lives you bless and touch. Thank you for always being true to your faith in God.
When and how do you plan your summer/fall garden? Do you do a gardening journal? Do you repeat gardening layouts every few years, then Mix it up? I'm wanting to bombard you with all your gardening knowledge 😊
I do take a lot of notes. I have in my mind the perfect gardening journal. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to designing it. I'm going to be sharing the process of putting in the fall garden. I usually start putting those things in around August/Sept but that will vary by region.
I want to cry seeing your garden, it is so beautiful. Also, I totally saw y'all at your kid's open house when school started last year and I fangirled.

Your hubby is so funny. I love how you both laugh together. Thank goodness for sweet neighbors. Your garden is clever, too.

My favorite part is 2:49 with the guys being ‘models’ looking like, “I don’t know how I get myself into these situations.” They’re so sweet! 😻
Not all zip ties are UV protected and will break down in the sun. Make sure you purchase ones meant for outdoors. Love this idea!
I must have gotten the wrong ones, they always busting 😁👍
Crucial info. Great Big Thanks!
Aw woww .. thanks 👍🏾
Exactly. Just buy some cheap metal wire instead of more plastic junk for the landfill's sake
@@Acts-1322that’s right! Coated wire is best and last for many many years

Have you ever planted climbing flowers on one? It would be a great idea to attract bees to help pollinate your veggies. I absolutely love this idea..
Good idea. Thank u
Great idea! I can smell the sweet peas from here!
I would think chicken wire would work for flowers and lighter vegtables like beans. My mind is spinning with ideas!

I have seen all your videos and they are the most informative gardening tips I have seen. Keep up the good work.
I love your garden.
bsofar I did this with my tomatoes this yr too. I think I have 12/14 plants trellised. 6/7 plants on each side.
Thank you!!

This is AMAZING! I can’t wait to build this in my garden!! Love everything you’ve planted, beautiful!
"Teamwork makes the Dream Work" !!!! Love this so much!!! You all are to be commended on such productive beauty! Well done!! Thank you! Keep it up!!
My condolences 😢 Good luck on your gardening! You can do it 👍👍😊
Simple and straight to the point! Thank you so much!!
Omg so awesome to see another youtuber in comments. Btw I am a subby
Wonderful vertical space saver. Love your garden. Thanks for sharing
We've used cattle panels for year not only for our tomatoes & cukes to grow up but I love them as a arch :)
Wow, i absolutely love your lovely garden
Looks like a gardener Paradise
In LOVE with your garden
Me too!
Wow, awesome idea. I thought of the trellis across the raised bed but not on the outside....that really gives you more room and a shady area....really great idea!
Girl, u r my hero. Great video. I loved the teasing and laughing too.
Oh Id have fairy lights all over that garden, I would live in it, it's absolutely beautiful work.
I made two! One at my community garden plot and one in my small backyard. I love them and so does everyone who sees them! 😍Thank you, Jess for inspiring and sharing your knowledge. I am in Virginia Beach, VA- zone 8
"Probably 80% of our farm is held together by zip ties."
I used to be a zookeeper. 80% of zoos are held together by zip ties, too. They're the greatest invention ever.
Same here in south tx.
I used zip ties to secure chicken wire around my compost frame. Just beware that they DO degrade, get brittle etc. So maybe inspect every couple of years and replace any with problems.
Handy persons secret weapon zip ties and duck tape.
@@EhGardenerGuy You forgot caulk!! LOL.
Avoidable plastic that will never break down.
GORGEOUS! can't wait to do similar when I get my lakehouse/land.
Zip ties are the greatest invention next to Duct tape!!
Velcro is pretty amazing too :)
Zip ties don't last long in the sun. Spending a little time to reinforce with heavy wire is worth the time.
Zip ties are handy for sure, I just wish there were not plastic. Wouldn't cotton rope/string last for a few years too?
What I was thinking...and paper clips maybe 3rd
Yep! And, most “duct tape” is not fit to tape-seal ducts, because it won’t stay stuck with temp and humidity changes.
Super helpful!! Thank you so much for actually building one for us .. mysteries solved! 😀. Thanks to your husband and neighbor too!
This is so encouraging!!! We paid lots of money for dinky cedar trellis that just got knocked down by wind. Gonna try these babies! Thank youuuu!
Thank you for the instructional video - I've always wondered how hard it would be to handle that project.
I love arched trellis .

Cattle panels, where have you been all my life?!
:) I love artist, they get this beautiful inspiration!
Thank God for modern communication right:)
Seriously.
Right?! Why is this not more of a thing? Why is this the first I'm learning of it?
New to me 😳
Please help!
This was my very first video I ever watched , I’ve been following you ever since. Thank you for all you do. I bless you ❤
I just want to say you are so real and so genuine... its a pleasure to watch your videos..god bless your family.
Love from The Netherlands,
Diana
Hi pretty woman. How are you doing today? And how is the family doing over there??
Starting my first veggie garden up in the pacific northwest, got about 140 square feet of raised beds and your videos are helping me feel much more confident. Thank-you!
Im in port orchard, good luck with your garden and remember to plant by the moon! I had to replant my corn and pumpkin starts after they froze a few days ago.. arghh timing is everything
I have watched this video probably 20 times, still one of my most favorites❤😊
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Thank you!
This is my dream garden! Great tips too!
Thanks! T.
Wilco sells 16' hog panels that are 3'
Cattle panels are 8' x 50"
And now I know what to do, to make my garden look extra nice with an affordable arched trellis. THANK YOU!
Re-watching videos! Love love love love those cattle panels😍💖
I love your garden is very beautiful 👍🏾
Well done
I love this. I have a bad back and knees so I didn't plant last year, but this would make it possible for me. I'd love to see what materials you use to make your raised beds. Thank you.
Very informative video. Thank you for showing how to do this it is a big help to our garden. Was wondering if you have compost bins and if you could explain on how to start one or use them? It would be a great help we are planning on expanding our garden and are not sure on how to compost. Can't wait for next video!!
I'm such an informal composter but I will see if I can't put a video today sharing about the basics of it.
Roots and Refuge Farm thanks so much that would be a great help!! Love your channel!
This is the first video I watched of yours nearly 4 years ago now and you inspired my heart so much. It has been such a blessing to watch your channel grow and see the lives you bless and touch. Thank you for always being true to your faith in God.
I absolutely adore your garden. It's probably my dream garden, if I'm honest.
Wow
Love from India.
We love our cattle panel arches!
They are so dreamy!
Oh wonderful. I have yet to attempt a fall garden, was hoping this year but alas other things. 😊 thanks for the great tips
I want to cry seeing your garden, it is so beautiful. Also, I totally saw y'all at your kid's open house when school started last year and I fangirled.
What a nice, informative video...especially for us who know nothing about cattle panels! Thanks for sharing your vertical gardening expertise.
