  • Easy and reliable way to catch big Spanish Mackerel
Baits used Slimmie Mackerel or Yellow Tail Yakkas rigged live on a Snell Rig with 40lb Wire
30 to 50lb Braid or Mono as main line...
Feed the livie out the back of the boat around 50m
(dont cast and kill the bait)
Have the boat just in gear and slow troll around one knot of speed
Troll the baits around reefs and drop offs or were you find bait schools.
You can use a light or firm drag as the Spanish Mackerel rarely reef you on the bottom
1 hook rigged threw the nose of the bait 2nd hook shallow threw the lower side of the body.
You can go as small as a 2/0 baitholder hook as long as it's a heavy gauge for the nose and for the body a treble or same 2/0 hook.
I find Gamakatsu Hooks are super sharp very strong and can hold up under extreme pressure...
Easy to manage 2 rods out at once one a bit closer then the other...
This Technique also works well on a downrigger system.
In the video we were Testing out some Samurai Prototype Rods these models are not available on the market as they were prototypes
However the newer Samurai Reaction range is the rod you need to look for if your chasing a super strong reliable rod for chasing Big Mackerel with bait or lures...
The Range is a Spinning Rod from light as 2-4lb up to 25-40lb
You can check the Reaction out online at frogleysoffshore webpage if interested you can order if its not already in stock at any local tackle shop.

No mate livies are just on the surface we do drop the boat out of gear if we sound up a few and let them drift down for a minute or so then keep going...
Even if Anchored or drifting not using sinkers...

im from Tampa bay Florida. but the bait looks like a fish here called a leather jack (locally (aka) skip jack. only difference yours doesn't look to have a pair of spines on the belly secreting a milky white venom that burns like a wasp or hornet sting.

Hey mate our baits here we use are called Yakkas (Yellow Tail) and Slimmies which are a small slimmy Mackerel.
No venom on ours at all
