It's really nice to see Jesus portrayed with some humanity rather than being a completely saintly man without a single flaw or doubt, actually fearing his upcoming death and wanting to avoid it, just makes the character a lot easier to relate to and if anything makes the things he did seem even grander as they were done by a simple man.

Ted Neeley said on the commentary of the DVD that he wanted to portray Jesus as just a normal human being and during this scene he envisioned Jesus talking to God as if it was a son talking to his dad about being betrayed. It's not that he had any flaws, as I don't believe doubt is necessarily a flaw. I think this is a very important part in the Bible because it shows that doubt is perfectly normal and fine, and is simply part of the process of living a Godly life. It's fine to doubt or be confused by God's will, and it is usually that doubt which will then give you a more clear understanding of why it must happen.

Wiccan here, and I grew up Christian (Episcopalian, specifically). What I love so much about this film/musical is that it doesn't feel the need to be preachy and thus, it's something everyone can enjoy. It presents Jesus exactly as he would have seemed during his earthly life: Just an ordinary dude, a carpenter's son of all people, who claimed to be touched by the divine, and whether or not he genuinely was is left to the audience, as well as the religious and social implications that would have had. This particular version of the story respects its audience enough to let them come to their own conclusions and, in turn, I think we should all be able to respect that. Blessed be.

I think you made an interesting point here, "as he would have seemed during his earthly life" and that's exactly confirmed by the Bible itself, when he came back to Nazareth and when they said - but we know him whell, and his parents, who does he think he is, what does he have to teach us?
If we get it back to our personal life, we are also often seen just as another human being wasting oxygen and not as a unique and unrepeatable human being that is pricless. There was and never will be anyone like you on this planet. If we could approach ourselves with like that, maybe there would be less hate and suffering in this world.

@@Yawopy That's because you guys are interpreting a line Jeus never actually said, based on the depection of Gethsemane in this film or musical. In the Scriptures Jesus never is frustrated or bordrline sarcastic as shown here. Tim Rice, who wrote this hypotetical line, knew the passages from the New Testament. Jesus was in far more anguish than the film or musical can capture or even attempts to capture. In the New Testament, Jesus kept going back to his disciples, wanting them to pray with him, because he needed companionship during this horrible time, but they were sleeping. Then he kept returning to pray multiple times, falling on his face while praying for the cup to pass him but only if it be the Father's will and not his, and in so much destress that he was sweating blood. If you think Tim Rice, knowing this, writes the lyric, 'Take Me Now, before I change my mind" because Jesus was letting the Father know I'm in complete control here but I'm gonna let you have your way, than you either haven't read the scriptures or they went over your head. Jesus was scared to death, wanting people to pray with him and going back and forth between the disciples and the garden in disaray and stress and sweating. So had he said the line "Take me now before I change my mind" it would have been because he was scared and weak and wanted to hurry up and get it over with it before he backed out.

Maybe he was asking for the wrong will to be changed. Christians believe God sends Jesus to suffer and die to save them from suffering and death and the 'second death'. But it was the people put Jesus on a cross. Maybe if the people had understood that scapegoating and violence are not answers - he'd not have needed crucifying. Not sure it was 'God's will' needed changing. Not that it changes anyway - apparently. Why is there an assumption that Jesus asking "God's will" be done means Jesus going to die on a cross. God wills this. Was it not to show the opposite. That man needs to learn he doesn't need rams offered in bushes - burning or not - or scapegoats generally. But to grow up. Maybe the way to the more 'abundant life' spoken about is when we learn to 'crucify' our own petty egos. No longer the eye for eye leaving all blind. But I love this song too cause of the real humanity it displays. Very real and true.

Praying is a way to communicate with God, as you would talk to a beloved parent. Jesus, as His Son, knew His Father's will... knew what He had to do, and He was scared... so stressed that He sweated blood. Praying is a way to express the anguish. Jesus was praying, if You can remove this fate, please... but not my will. Just as you would say to your parent if they ask you to do something painful.

This scene makes it clear that Crucifixion was not predestined: it was Jesus' choice. In the end, despite his doubts, he surrendered himself...but dying on the cross, he asked why God had forsaken him. And Neeley's performance of these lyrics is just breath-taking.

This is the best version of this song. No one matches Ted Newley in his prime singing this. Not only for the high notes he hits, but for the various raw emotions when coming to terms with the knowledge of his own demise, through first working through fear, then bargaining, anger, sadness, before the final acceptance that he’s going to die and nothing can change that.

Im not a fan of religion nor do I follow any of them but this movie from an emotional standpoint is excellent. Each song emotionally draws you in. With this song you see the fear and doubt a person may feel before fulfilling whatever their destiny is. In this case Jesus knows what will happen and has a shred of doubt if it should happen but in the end accepts his fate. All other incarnations of Jesus Christ Superstar seem to not be as good as this one from 1973. These are just my opinions.

  • @ellen5603

Most powerful song and scene in a movie that's stuffed full of them. Jesus shows himself as a man who is afraid of death and questioning the necessity of his sacrifice...but in the end he takes a leap of faith and submits to what he perceives as God's will. You don't have to be religious to see the tragic beauty of this.
Like all of us, Jesus asks the question "Why?" that never has an answer.

I didn't know alot about it, I didn't read any long reviews either. The Odeon theater was full. I was emotionally moved during the movie several times, but. when this scene played, and, Ted Neely hit those high notes, telling his Father, that he will die, and, then they played those pictures of Him dying, I (and several others) stood, both my hands covering my mouth in horror, and tears streaming down my face . Incredible experience indeed.

The historical Jesus was a rebel who spread a message that anyone could receive God - whatever you think God might be. This was in opposition to the established code at the time that only "holy" people could receive God. Ted Neeley's anti-establishment look and his intense but wavering voice saturated with human emotion is the perfect portrayal of a rebel Christ. There will never be another Ted Neeley.

This scene is my favorite of the film and musical. The Bible doesn't really help us grasp the agony Jesus was in there at Gethsemane. Here we can get a great idea tbe agony Jesus' human side was dealing with as He prepared for the Cross. For me as a Christian, it brings great comfort to know that my Lord and Savior, because He experienced emotional pain and agonizing, understands when I deal with agony over things in my own life. We should all be grateful for that.

If you reflect and meditate on that Bible passage, as on any other, many things are revealed, some very hard to bear. This art piece, no matter how valuable, doesn't come close to Jesus' experience. Just try to have a concept - a being whose consciousness is pure good needs to affront betrayal, rejection, mockery, spitting, whipping, torment and death and not to respond to it with agression, venegance, cursing, but prayer and forgivness. That's what breaks the cycle.

my jewish teacher taught me that, for being jewish, you do not have to believe in God, you have to act like a jewish. It doesn't matter what a man says, his acts count. It's a great lesson. To be christian, no one needs to believe in Jesus in the sense of believing he's Christ. To act as he taught would be more than enough. I notice how many people declare they hate God, then they embrace the first thing that seems to make a little sense. Sometimes in violent directions. Jesus Christ left something that can be fully appreciated and respected even as an atheist, but only if a person believes in peace and love and respect. We all pretend we are so great and good. He choose to be human.

Ted Neeley tore this song up! After watching the 2018 version w/John Legend I am not sure that anyone will ever replicate this version again. In Ted's time singers sung, in today's world of music synthesizers rule! I don't know how the director did it but he evoked pure emotion from the whole cast and I am even more appreciative of that now after watching the 2018 live version!

This song and the whole musical is so perfect musically that it could not be inspired other than but by God. It summerises all suffers, doubts and fears what Jesus as a real human felt before his death, but in the end he took God's will and continued his road to fill his destiny.

Péter Csonka Really? It was condemned by many religious groups as blasphemous when it first came out. It doesn't portray Jesus as being God-like, he is shown as just a man.

Stunning, powerful, gripping, touching, compelling. This version of the song is 6 years older than I am, and it gives me ghoosebumps every time i hear it. Ted Neeley created a performance that still keeps spellbound and amazes both metalheads, rockfans and people who don´t care for any of those musical styles. Thank you for posting.
