I love your opening "new level of depravity"... hahaha! I've read Frankenstein several times and have never liked it. I'm planning to read it once more and give a really good critique of why I don't think it's good literature. I've read one other work by her, Maurice, which was found in the 90s, I believe. I liked it much better --- maybe I'll talk about that, too, on a later video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! New subscriber!

I would love to listen to your video of why you think Frankenstein is bad literature. Sounds very intriguing, really. I remember being more positively impressed by the book than by the author by the time I got done. Thanks for subscribing.

Frankenstein to me is actually a brilliant morality tale about why it is so dangerous to play God. Did you know her husband edited out references to God before publication?. To me Mary Shelley didn’t stand a chance. Her father was a free-love advocate and obviously unstable man. PB Shelley was already an accomplisher seducer at age 21..She was so young and had never known any stability. And yet through all that she was inspired to write an enduring morality play about modern man’s hubris and its consequences.

I like the way you describe it, Faith... and how sad that her husband edited out references to God. True, her life was a tragedy starting with the death of her mother.

As I've been listening to The Life and Works of Jane Austen, Mary Shelley's name came up because her mother was Mary Wollstonecraft, an early feminist, the author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman published in 1792.

Yes, it is tragic that Mary Shelly's mother died right after she was born. Both her parents were authors, well-known at that time.

This was very interesting 🧐 I like how you recognised it was good literature even though you didn’t ever want to read it again or anything else by Shelly. Also liked the way you looked at the author and what made her”tick.” Not something I would read (too scary for me) but I liked listening to your thoughts on the book and Shelley’s life choices.

I normally don't read horror novels, but I do want to read the well-known classics. The writing was amazing, especially considering the age of the writer. I was sorry her life was so miserable, especially with the death of her mother when she was 11 days old. Such a tragedy. I wanted to read a redemption story in her bio but didn't see that there. It could have happened with biographers not knowing or choosing not to write about it.
