  • Juneteenth marks the final proclamation of freedom from slavery in the U.S. On this Juneteenth, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is featuring a dynamic and moving work titled For Justice and Peace, composed and performed by Xavier Dubois Foley (b. 1994). This double concerto for violin and bass was co-commissioned by ‪@carnegiehall‬, the ‪@SphinxOrganization‬, and the ‪@newworldsymphony‬ to mark 400 years after the slave ship "The White Lion" landed in Jamestown, an event regarded as the beginning of African slavery in colonial North America.
*This performance with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra premiered on November 19, 2020, as part of the ASO's Behind the Curtain Series.

Kudos to the Atlanta Symphony for participating in this performance and for posting this. Having just heard this astounding piece with the Oregon Symphony, I just had to hear it again! This work's emotional and technical journey leaves you hanging on to your heart and loving every note.

I'm not sure whether the violin is a friend of the composer, but at 8:48 the former seems to give him a very cute look of pride. Wholesome.

Amazing performance! Loved the interplay of the violin and bass...so conversational and technically pure! Loved the occasional jazzy and percussive elements.

I have listened to this piece so much over the past few months. There is so much depth and brilliance in the composing and playing. My mind can't comprehend the brilliance it this composition. Xavier, do you have absolute pitch? I hear birds in the notes, a cracking of a whip (the last few notes of the piece), the emotion of tension, confusion, and anxiety and so much more. I have so much I could write about this piece. Of course this just my interpretation which could be way off base. Anyways, I write all of this to say superb!
