I was nervous about this one. It's a lot of book... with a lot of meaning (potential, interpreted, or perceived), and we only, really, scratched the surface here! I highly recommend you read this book yourself! Big shout out to the guys for keeping it fun, while also having a great conversation! Hope you dig the episode all!😀
i can understand that but honestly i thought this book was really good not perfect far from it but as a elseworld story it was a interesting story in my opinion, plus the episode was tons of fun in my book.
I love how Sal and Tiff have such totally different hosting styles, and how well they complement each other when it comes to tackling such different sorts of books. This channel really is something special.
This is basically a Mister Miracle version of "For the Man Who Has Everything". Except Scott chooses to stay in the dream instead of leave. It really does work for the character though. What is the perfect trap for the ultimate escape artist? A Trap he doesnt want to escape. My interpretation of the "glitches" were that it was Scotts subconscious fighting back against the trap. His "suicide" literally was him trying to escape in the beginning. That being said, in the beginning the key to it was Barda. She kept him in line and kept him from asking questions. The final lock and key was his son. That was what ultimately kept him trapped. The one trap that Scott could not escape was love.
Maybe I'm too hopeful but I always kinda read it as the glitches were Scott's way of self sabotaging, a creative way to show his darkest thoughts and insecurities being projected at him, figures from his tragedy filled childhood telling him that a world in which he was happy wasn't real and must be a trap but that he learned to live with his past ( literally) and accept that he can fight against those feelings and live a life of peace and happiness. I always saw it as him overcoming the mindset that his trauma had created for him and learning that everything isn't awful and that he can be happy without it being some trap set for him.
1:01:00 That heartrate monitor scene hit HARD. When my daughter was being born, my wife and I had already gone through a miscarriage and really struggled to have a baby. During delivery, we were on pins and needles and the only thing keeping us sane was hearing the heartbeat. And one time it just stopped, like completely. NOTHING. You don't know the sense of terror when you can't hear the heartbeat, the only audible clue to the well being of your unborn child, or the pure relief when the nurse comes in, readjusts the monitor, and you hear it again. After that little panic attack, we agreed we needed something to distract us, like Scott was trying to do. So we watched So You Think You Can Dance, of all things.
Tiffany did a really good job explaining mr.mircle to people that have never read it before. I'm just gonna say that out front. Impressive episode guys. Always a joy to watch.
Saying this book has a lot of emotion is a huge understatement. This book tore me apart. I know Tom King is iffy for people but when his heroes-with-personal-issues themes work, they Work. This book hit me hard. And his Vision was unsettling in all the right ways
"i thought he was the great escapest. how come he can't escape life?" *Tiffany smiles at the camera because Sal doesn't realize he has just enounced the entire premise of this book and its contemplative ending*
I read this just after coming out of a very long and emotionally abusive relationship and the "I can escape when I want" at the end of the book has always been incredibly bittersweet. Handled so well by Tiff and the guys too. Chapeu
Sometimes you read a book and know you just read a masterpiece. Watchmen, Long Halloween, Y The Last Man, and Geoff Johns Green Lantern saga are a couple times where I’ve realized this. Mister Miracle is another one of those books and deserving of all the praise it receives because it’s such a fascinating exploration of so many facets of the human condition and are desire to destroy the demons that constantly lurk around and within us.
That feeling is me watching Cheer Up!, JoJo TTRPG campaign, and while discovering JoJo Bizarre Adventure and Adventure Time: Islands Arc. They're stories which gave me the most joy and changed my perception of how view things.
I love the mental image of DeSaad giving that knife to his sister and saying "happy birthday sis, we both know I'll never actually have the nerve to use this"
i think tiffany is way too hard on herself when she's the one talking about the books, i think she did a wonderful job and really helped make such an amazing book really understable and fun
My take on the while “Darkseid is” thing is that in Judaism god will say “I am”. So Darkseid saying “Darkseid is” is him equating himself to God. This book in particular goes along with that with the whole “face of god” thing it repeats.
Started this knowing nothing of Mr. Miracle. The relationship between he and Big Barta set against the insane war being fought has me hooked. Will definitely dive into more Mr. Miracle! Thanks for the great content! Cheers 🍻
I just want to thank Comic Pop for giving me knowledge of this book, this has since become from the 2 times I have read it is my FAVORITE COMIC OF ALL TIME it made me feel a way no piece of media has made me feel in a long time and all of the wonderful people at comic pop are deserving of every single ounce of praise they get
In the final issue, there is a very subtle, but important image with Barda having a brown eye and blue eye which tied into the first issue. Scott is essentially in limbo and can go into the main continuity if he wants, but it’s not as fulfilling as the reality he is in.
This was one of the first Back Issues episodes I watched, a little over a year ago. I bought the comic after watching it, and things started going off the rails in my life shortly after. This book and this episode did a lot for me, and I’m back again to say thanks.
Finally after playing world bingo for 6 years I finally got the final spot, I've been waiting for someone to reference Pete Holmes Ex-Men and the Mothman prophecies within a minute. I never thought it would happen, so thank you Ethan, Ben, and Tiffany
One of the best episodes of Back Issues to date! Tiffany is right, you get something new out of every read of this book, and I got something new out of it with this episode. In regards to "Darkseid is," the anti-life equation, and the glitched panels: I always thought that represented trauma and mental illness and how that can alter your perception of reality. As someone who has quite a high level of anxiety, I know that it can mess with the way I perceive things. It makes me think an event went down a certain way when that might not be true.
on this rewatch, around 1:03:50, the jacon's ladder and naming of the baby, don't know why i didn't catch on to that but could be a nod to the movie jacob's ladder, which is a sort of buddhist tibetan book of the dead experience upon death, a possible interpretation that he never survived that suicide attempt.
I now just want to see Orion trying to defend Scott against Himself like: Orion: You’re honor my client can’t be an agent of darksied he is clearly innocent Orion: Well where’s the evidence that he ISN’T an agent of Darkseid Orion: Damn he’s good..
Hey Sal, Ben, Ethan, and Tiffany, since you guys did Back Issues for Mister Miracle, would you consider doing Back Issues for Jack Kirby’s Fourth World, with all 4 of you on the couch?
Thanks Tiffany!!! Love you guys, every review I've seen wasn't fully explained or too boring but you broke it down and made it easy to listen to and entertaining, thank you 😊
Man I remember checking this book out from my library right before the quarantine hit. I feel like the book would work amazingly as a mini series on dc universe.
Seriously this Mister Miracle series was one of the best of ALL TIME. It's so powerful and captivating even if you don't have familiarity with the characters.
I love mr miracle book by tom king it was actually really good and fantastic however i do understand this book has super heavy themes and is probably difficult to talk about but i think you Tiffany and the rest of the crew did a great job on covering this interesting story.
I adore this episode so much guys. Phenomenal job leading the discussion Tiffany. Your enthusiasm and little asides were a joy on this very intricate book.
If the anti life equation is knowledge 1:33:40 Darkseid giving up his eye is also a reference to Odin, who sacrificed his eye in Mimirs well in the pursuit of knowledge of all things.
I think, Darkseid Is… the face of god, but as Scott says, so are we, and with that power, we can decide what our lives are, and we can decide, when we wish, to escape. Or in other words, King is trying to say life is what we make of it, since we are the gods of our own life, this book analyzes the depression associated with the idea that life may not be more than what we imagine, be it through religion or purpose; and instead shows us that meaning doesn’t matter, as long as we have people we love; so now Scott knows life is meaningless, but he can’t escape (wouldn’t fully kill himself), because he loves his wife, his kid, and comes to accept, that irrespective of his trauma, he loves his life. The question isn’t whether Scott is capable of escaping, the question is whether he would ever go through with it; and I guess that King could argue, the greatest trap is the one that u don’t want to escape, and that trap is Life. Thanks for the great back issues, it made me look back at this masterpiece and made me realize there may have been more meaning than I thought the first time around!
Holy crap I was literally thinking "sal would have mentioned that we've seen forager before" and then his voice cones out from behind the scenes ...that was awesome lol
Man I hate that it took me this long to read Mister Miracle but I'm glad I did. This episode contextualized So much as well! I can't wait to re-read it after watching this!
Tbh I couldn't really get alot out of the Mr. Miracle miniseries. I don't think I really got it but you made a great episode. I see why other people like it and it is a good book.
Thank you for this amazing episode of this amazing book. I love the story, the artwork, the colours and I love that it is a New Gods book. DC, I need more New Gods. Btw, you did the book justice Tiffany.

Amazing work Tiff. So glad to see the book getting some love on the couch
You are doing much better than I would. I'm not sure I could coherently talk about this book for two hours to non comic fans. Amazing job.
As a fan of this book to the Nth degree, you did great!
Wonderful job on this episode, Tiffany! Your passion for this book really shows and makes the discourse a joy to watch.
i can understand that but honestly i thought this book was really good not perfect far from it but as a elseworld story it was a interesting story in my opinion, plus the episode was tons of fun in my book.

It's probably just the optimist in me, but I always kinda saw it as the opposite. Like he had to accept his life didn't always have to suck.
Man that's deep

"There's a prophecy that the son of Darkseid will destroy Darkseid. So who will it be? Orion or Scott?"
_"Yes."_

I knew carrots were bad for you! Orion eats one, he dies later. Darkseid eats one, he dies too. Don't trust the orange prophets of death!
I ate carrots just a few hours ago... shit.
It’s like Godfather

It took Ben until then worry about feeling sad? He wasn't suspicious as soon as Tiffany was holding the book?

Same thing with Sandman (coincidentally also covered by Tiffany!), masterpieces of writing, storytelling and use of characters

Ah Yesssssss fresh Back Issues on a Wednesday morning...life is good...
Good book too
Really digging the longer format Back Issues episodes, and the longer episodes from you guys on your other shows as well.
King can be so effective when given the right characters to work with. Please DC keep giving him D-listers with questionable mental health.
It just depends on the right d list character aswell
That Tom king shot by Ethan just made my day.

Every book Tiffany talks about is amazing.
I just got this one because of the video, I'm excited to go through it.
So basically Jack Kirby is the good , Stan Lee is the bad and Continuity is the Ugly ?
More or less yea jack Kirby left marvel because he kept getting shafted by lee
Tell Ethan that apocalypse has Christmas and every year Santa give darkseid coal.
"We don't get Christmas. No, all we get is Coal Day."
We know. It just wasn't relevant to the discussion.

I highly recommend his Omega Men book. The hardcover deluxd edition just came out.
I need a miracle right now, and a mister. That would be nice.

Hey Sal, Ben, Ethan, and Tiffany, since you guys did Back Issues for Mister Miracle, would you consider doing Back Issues for Jack Kirby’s Fourth World, with all 4 of you on the couch?
You guys should pitch The Moist Man to Universal. That concept alone could single-handedly save the Dark Universe.
