      You can get real big with just calisthenics. Not as big as a dude killing it at the gym lifting intense weight but you can get big. There is a difference between looking freakishly big and naturally big. The benefits of calisthenics are what you said plus getting big.

    IMO Calisthenics build the best looking bodies, and distribute mass and power evenly to very good measures. But of course there is no "better" or "worse" training, as long you get back as much as you give (or more), don't injure yourself and reach the goal you want. That's how I see it.

      uzibitch1 Haha bro u need to watch some videos of Adam Raw explaining it. Even weighted back squats are calisthenics cause you put the weight on yourself. For example you also do pull ups with t shirt on right? then i could also say bro this is not calisthenics you should do them naked, sometimes your clothes are 1 kg sometimes 0,5 kg. So why not do with 30 kg added? think about this

    • @iv4oooooo
      @iv4oooooo 8 років тому +3

      +DavePazz Bullshit. Ever heard about intensity and volume? Do you know what 5 reps per set and 15 reps per set do? Do you know how limiting calisthenics (if we're speaking about bodyweight and bodyweight only) is, offering just volume for the largest muscle groups and a couple of core exercises that build a strong core but not a big back, neither big arms, neither big chest, nor big legs. Intensity is low reps, volume is high reps. Intenisty builds STRENGTH. Volume is just broken muscle fibers and hypertrophy --> muscle soreness and more muscle built as a result of that. Calisthenics actually offers only the volume type of workouts and some fancy athletic type of stuff that can lead to way worse than bad shoulders and knees and bad shoulders and knees aswell, calisthenics is way more stressful on the joints, a muscle up for example with its quick switch at the forearms can fuck you up real bad, like it did me and I'm having tendon issues for about half a year now. Also if you're keen on doing only bodyweight workouts, you'll end up doing 20+ reps a set which is just pointless, losing muscle and fat, while just building endurance. Gym and weightlifting is the way you make it, you want strenght, you go for 5x5 programs, you want muscle and body, you go for 15x3 or 15x4, you want a strong core, you've got plenty of exercises for it. And about this "muscles built with own bodyweight are different from muscle by wieghtlifting" type of legends is just stupid. Seroiously, its just tissue that gets broken when being used more than usual and then repaired with a little extra mass in order to catch up to the tasks that you're giving it. End of the story.

    It definitely builds muscle. But continued progression in size and strength requires progressive overload and using only your body weight is obviously limiting in that regard.
    Update: some of you in the comments seem to be interpreting my comment to imply that you cannot use progressive overload with your bodyweight. Of course you can, which is exactly how these guys get as muscular as they do. But there's a reason that high-level calisthenics guys and gals don't have the muscularity of bodybuilders, and that's because old fashioned barbells and dumbbells allow for a continual progressive overload that is simply not possible with calisthenics alone. This isn't a criticism of calisthenics; it's brutally hard and produces great physiques with tremendous agility and core strength, something lots of strength athletes lack. But IF your goal is to be as strong and muscular as genetically possible, calisthenics will not get you there.

      Train any way you desire but he meant the balance and strength and core strength etc is a lot harder to master than walking up to a bar lifting it up or dropping it or pushing weight off your chest or lifting weight on your back I think that's what he meant it's harder to master :)

    • @DaveElwoodCutter
      @DaveElwoodCutter 9 років тому +7

      CutiiePieeTv Did you ever deadlift, squat or bench heavy with good form? Theres a lot of core strength and balance involved if you want to keep a good form with heavy weights. The difference is, that you can start from a lower weight and work up to heavy weights with good form, while for calisthenics there's not much working up from lighter weights with the advanced movements. Or let's put it different: the progressions you can use are not as quantifiable like going up 10 pounds in the bench so you don't have that feel of linear progression you get with adding more weights to lifts.

    • @CutiiePieeTv
      @CutiiePieeTv 9 років тому

      Yes sir I have I have a 500 pound deadlift a 390 squat and a 280 bench I train both calisthenics and weight training (strength/body building) I started out on calisthenics and slowly progressed to the moves in the video I found the movements of calisthenics harder than lifting that weight with good form and when it comes to dead lifts squats and bench you're totally right man it is a shit ton of core but my point was that when it comes to calisthenics it's such a amazing movement it works your core in such a dynamic way that in my personal experience and my personal opinion are much more hard than deadlifts and such that's MY personal opinion though :)

    • @DaveElwoodCutter
      @DaveElwoodCutter 9 років тому

      CutiiePieeTv It was a sincere question if you lifted properly because often unexperienced people (or people who lift horribly wrong) look down on regular lifts when they see stuff like that and underestimate the core strength and balance needed for proper deadlifts and DEEP squats.
      I gotta admit I totally suck at calisthenics, which I blame on the high specificity of the movements. So I don't really train the moves anymore. For me they are not worth the time considering my goals (basic strength for Muay Thai, Boxing and wrestling).
      Calisthenics just don't transfer as well to other activities because the motor patterns are to specific, which is why they are harder to learn (it's less about the actual strength that makes it hard but more about the practice of the skill - although it obviously requires a lot of strength). However they are a great way to stay in good shape and be fit when you're not training for a specific sport.

    when are body builders going to realise it isn't necessarily Size and mass that makes strength!
    muscle is merely the engine, tendons, nervous and ligaments is what creates the real sense and ability of strength!
    for example you can have a 2.5L engine pushing 200hp or you can have a 1L 220bhp! muscle to weight and density is a huge aspect when considering strength!
    in my opinion bulk muscle is good for 2 things, 1 dimension power e.g lifting...and 2, looking good on a beach. not taking anything away from body builders! their craft snd strength is amazing, I could never do what they do!Im a climber and marital artist, so I'm light framed and can't lift for toffee, but I do calasthenics and bouldering, and 2 finger one arm pull Ups are easy, but I cant bench more than my weight! doesn't mean that to scale I'm not as strong, it just means I'm adapted to different levels of strength!
    kudos to all who dedicate to a craft though!

      MidnightSTALKER979 it does have legs,it just that they don't build much about muscle mass,sure it kinda small(as you say chicken legs) because they don't build their legs with weights to get big but they DO workout their legs to get stronger and acourse very good to shred up their legs without getting too big. If you wanna see calisthenics with legs then you can check these guys like Adam raw,lazar novovic(bar brothers) they do workout their legs ;)

      +Mikus Silenieks can only lose blood volume....can't lose muscle.
      muscle is flesh...can't lose flesh. loss of blood makes muscles appear to shrink due to loss of pump.

    • @YangSword9x
      @YangSword9x 8 років тому +1

      +xsharkilspotx bodybuilders gain blood volume mostly which is why after they stop they lose most of their size.... its just blood that makes them look big. its not muscle fiber that actually do you any good. gonna pop that balloon with a blade.

    • @iv4oooooo
      @iv4oooooo 8 років тому +2

      +YangSword9x And btw, you do get new muscle cells, those aren't fat cells, fat cells just gets more fat inside of them and stretch to infinity, muscle cells don't work like that. The way muscle is build is by new muscle cells being built on top of broken ones. Also, look up Andreas Munzer and tell me how its blood volume again, IT IS MUSCLE bro, MUSCLE. Bodybuilders lose that MUSCLE because to get that BIG you need to eat like a fucking bear, so they stop eating like bears and their bodies go back to a smaller state. Simple as that, no such thing like blood pump, jesus. If it worked like that, they could just inject some litres of blood in my veins and I can go to a bodybuilding competition without a single day at the gym.

    The moment you add weight when you are doing pull ups or dips for example, it is not longer calisthenics. No longer a body weight only exercise

    • @philipshapkin6607
      @philipshapkin6607 8 років тому +11

      But it sorta sticks to the principle of calisthenics which is doing those movements that affect a wide range of muscles. like that's the main advantage of calisthenics so I feel like those sort of technicalities don't matter

    • @bboyStuntZ

      Philip Shapkin That's like saying I'm gonna put on a blind fold that has material which is so thin that I can see through it. It sticks to the principle of covering my eyes but if I can still see through the blind fold it defeats the purpose of covering my eyes so I can't see. It's no longer calisthenics when weights are involved.

    This is the type of training I want to do. Lifting weights is boring to me.. I mean I like doing the base movement, but I find it difficult to see how functional the exerccieses are at all times and then I don't really want to get big and bulky either..
    I've started to do participate more in the classes at my gym such as sling-training classes and CWORX-classes (somewhat heavy on abs and core). the next class I wantto try is their GRIT-class, but this one is listed as a red class so I'll give myself 1-2 weeks to get back into a good routine before I try it, becuase the red classes are their most demanding.
    I've also thought about trying out crossfit. There is this other gym who does crossfit and is not too far away. what do you think of cossfit? If i start doing crossfit I'll probably not do any upper-body training with weights outside of what I might have to do on the crossfit-sessions or in my Grit-class. the upper body will be activated in all my classes anyway and the only muscle-group I will lift weights for would perhaps be my weights.
    I like working out, but I want a physique that is slim and fairly androgynous..I'm naturally thin with long legs and I loose weight easily, but at the same time if I lift weights 4-5 days a week my physique gets manlie and the back starts to get into a v-shape (which I'm not really taht happy about).. What do you think of my program so far. I know it will sound weird for a lot of you that I relaly dont want big muscles and want my physique to stay fairly feminine and androgynous, but I just do want that and it's not something I want to discuss. But please give me feedback on my program.
    i think I will obviously build some muscles, but I just hope they will be compact and that i will build a different type of strength than if I was to do isolating exercises with weights.

      ***** I don't think you're racist. Just misled and missing the actual meaning of your penultimate paragraph...Look up the meaning of the word "degrowth"...your so-called more intelligent races are responsible for every problem the world has. Blacks are more intelligent for the world as it was...the present world is a photocopy of a copy of a copy- nothing means anything anymore. People put petrol in their cars to drive to little concrete constructions, known as "gyms", to workout. They have to pay once for the car, then a second time for the gym. Waste of money, resources AND time...very intelligent!"Blacks on their own never had any advanced writing system"- language was the worst thing to ever happen to the human race. It can be more easily misinterpreted, especially across different languages and it's just a poor attempt to communicate our thoughts and describe our reality. It removes us from the present moment."never harnessed wild animals". Great! Who wants to be slave-drivers to our fellow beings....oh, wait...that already happened...lol.Advancing civilisation is nothing to be proud of. The "degrowth" movement is seeing many people, predominantly white, purposefully moving towards what some would call an impoverished lifestyle in order to return to their roots and be happier- veganism, minimalism and the exercise movement in tropical environments shows a yearning to go back to whence we came. To essentially become more "black" (if you want to separate us out like that...I personally believe we are one, but your argument is flawed).As for your violence and crimes, the nature of crimes committed by blacks is generally more "animalistic" whereas whites are more known for the crimes against whole nations and people. As well as the more psychotic crimes. I don't know about you, but I can more easily forgive someone for killing/raping one person than I can a government for robbing a whole nation, enslaving a whole race or pilfering a country of it's resources and then saying, "They had weapons of mass destruction".My 2 cents.

      ***** Thanks for your polite and thorough response. A rarity in UA-cam comments :).You made many comments, most of which I still disagree with but one gave me a reason to re-think my stance."That's quite an unfounded claim. Are the white, East Asians, Jews, etc. responsible for famine in Africa for example? Sufferings by North Koreans?" I don't think it's as much the races you mentioned as it is the *divide* (duality) of the races on earth that have created imbalance...polarisation if you will. Some people have too much, others not enough. "I think you are also biased because you're only focusing on "problems" intelligence races created, while neglecting the countless positive benefits they brought to the world." Perhaps...I just think it's too easy for us to talk about the positive benefits when the majority of the world doesn't enjoy them. All things accounted for, there would be more harmony and happiness- with more people's needs met- *as an average* if we removed/hadn't created duality. Of course, that would mean/would have meant a massive downgrade for the fortunate few (of which we are a part of) and more natural selection due to the lack of "advancement" in medicine (

    Of course calisthenics can build muscle but the movements demand a massive amount of balance and skill that takes away from one's ability to effectively fail or fatigue a muscle or muscle group.
    The skill set is very specific to the movements you are performing and will probably not translate into anything other than becoming more proficient at calisthenics or gymnastics. If that is your goal then this is for you.
    This is not the most effective way to build muscle and involves a far greater risk of injury. Make sure you have an orthopedic surgeon's number on hand.
    The claim that this mode of training builds a denser type of muscle to regular weight training is also fallacious. An individual's muscle density is largely genetically predetermined.

    • @dimadeloseros1
      @dimadeloseros1 9 років тому +2

      xanthromera So planche requires a lot of balance right? Let me educate you about the planche, front lever and an iron cross, its an 98% strength 2% balance. Your welcome.

    • @xanthromera
      @xanthromera 9 років тому +3

      Dima Kluchko Seriously wrong, there is a far greater proportion of balance and skill set. Not to mention some of these movements rely on the practitioner having minimal leg size. They are a terrible way to train because of risk of injury, and at best represent a demonstration of balance, skill, and strength.
      A pure demonstration of strength would require eliminating, or minimizing any skill requirement. Lifting a heavy weight under control is a better demonstration of pure strength.
      Consider for example that Olympic lifts require a greater skill component than any of the 3 power-lifting movements. As you become proficient the skill requirement may reduce but it is always there.

    • @xanthromera
      @xanthromera 9 років тому

      Dima Kluchko As another simple example, consider the difference between a barbell shoulder press and a handstand press. What percentage of skill and balance would you attribute each movement? You could argue that the barbell shoulder press requires 90% strength and 10% skill and balance. The handstand press would require a far greater skill and balance component, perhaps more like 50/50.
      Think about how many guys could easily barbell shoulder press their own bodyweight for several repetitions, and yet not be able to do a single handstand press.

      xanthromera Please don't ever talk about something you haven't any knowledge about and try to compare any other sport with the gymnastics ( only strength movements) unless you done it and got good at it with some considerable level. Let me tell you that in order to achieve movements such as iron cross you gotta train years! Don't compare calisthenics ( gymnastics) hard movements to lifting weights ever again please thank you.

      Dima Kluchko In the absence of any rational argument for your position, you tell me not to comment on something you claim to know more about. Irrelevant either way.
      Why not make comparisons to other strength sports? Because you say not to..
      Why not discuss relative strength and balance components? Because you say not to..
      Go and get a CT scan to see if there is a brain present.

    How do you start with calisthenics anyway? What type of calisthenic workouts should I do to target the main muscles in my body? I workout 6 times a week

    Hey guys, do you have any basic exercises that you started doing before going into the more elaborate stuff.
    Thanks

    Gentlemen, if you do bench, deadlift and squats in CONJUNCTION with these exercises and progressions, I guarantee you will get laid more. Not only if a girl see you doing something like 0:48 after some heavy squats will her panties will explode like a fire hydrant. Try it out, and let the alpha qualities commence..

    Not only calisthenics built their muscles. They use weights as well. They wouldn't be that big without them

    So why is it so much trouble to give out the name of the first song? Is there some rule or game or... what's going on? since it's taboo to post publicly can someone please message me the song ? or just... post it. the first one with the rapper, i know his name is Lowkey from reading hundreds of comments. not expecting a response but thanks if someone actually reads and answers instead of just reading like you are doing right now. If you don't know it it's cool :)

    what is that song when he is doing handstand pushups at around 0:55?

  • @karlpalmgren6069
    @karlpalmgren6069 8 років тому

    my own take on C vs WL is that C is harder because it involves more practice to to get the moves right for the exercises + that is has limitations to max weight lift, but on the other hand you involve a lot of small muscles with C and gets a good cardio included in your "lifting so to speak"
