    This is the 3rd video in a row with Bertrand in it that I've watched. He seems to have 3 problems. 1) He's far too cocky for his skill set. He's clearly not as good as he thinks he is. 2) He doesn't have the will to win. He takes too long to rest and doesn't push himself. 3) His triceps are clearly not very strong. He has failed during the dips part in all 3 videos I watched.

    Bertrand was doing deeper squats and I can see great progress on his bench and squat. Anyways, the Men's Physique athlete was a bit quicker, as well as he needed shorter recovering periods. Really motivational fight! Hope to see more soon.

    every exercise here plays into the men's physique athlete
    There must be more variation in the exercises, not simply lifting weights. Why there aren't any courses that would test how dynamic and fast are the athletes with their bodies?
    Think for example of comparing gymnasts, who train their bodies to achieve finesse in certain skills, against powerlifter in a match where the gymnast should squat as much as he can and the powerlifter should try to tumble around and do stuff standing on his arms upside down as a gymnast.
    Edit: To all point people saying it's strength: strength has flexible meaning so doesn't constrict itself only to how big the numbers are or how big the rock is you are picking.
    If you are dismissing involvement of skill, saying that gymnastic is just skill, then why you bitch about the way someone does a squat, a pull up, a dip? Why not then measure arm length since that matters a lot how much you will be able to do dips or how much you will bench press. Same for height and the amount one deadlifts the weight from the ground.
    It all matters, that's why there are so many sports with emphasis on isolated skills.
    You might as well say this is cardio wars as well, because everyone is strong doing his first set, but then some gas very fast and can't continue and others keep on going.

    Joe Lewis squat half reps come on you can't count Them all, bertrand is going much lower, what requires much more strength

    • @muhammadshariq8474
      @muhammadshariq8474 9 років тому +27

      +Bose Ranger Exactly my thought. Many of Joe's squats were "no reps". He would've lost if he did justice to every rep of every exercise like Bertrand. Surprised that FULL ROM wasn't as strictly emphasised in this match...

    • @Toxondomo
      @Toxondomo 9 років тому +104

      the rule was to hit parallel, and every rep was atleast parallel, so don't call him out on that

    • @Edwardthebest417
      @Edwardthebest417 9 років тому +23

      It was good form. You don't need to go down all the way; your thighs just have to be parallel to the floor.

    • @kblkbl
      @kblkbl 9 років тому +27

      +Bose Ranger Unless you're doing something close to your 1RM it is much more comfortable to divebomb the squat than holding it at parallel. You can see Bertrand is divebombing basically every rep as a mean to save energy while Joe is controlling every rep to go just parallel.
      In the end I think he did it this way more out of habit.

  • @Yusuf1187
    @Yusuf1187 9 років тому +13

    A few problems with this:
    -- The whole design of the challenge is based on bodybuilding exercises, not calisthenics or a balance of both, so of course you'd expect the bodybuilder to have an inherent advantage.
    -- The challenges are based around pushing movements, with no pulling movements. Again, this greatly favors weightlifters rather than people who primarily train calisthenics.
    -- Lewis wasn't going parallel on his squats. Bertrand was going much deeper. The rules should make sure that they're each doing the same.

    • @Abisso666
      @Abisso666 9 років тому

      +Overhead4477 I agree with all your points. It still pisses me off how every single time one of the athletes doesn't perform the exercises properly. But the same points have been brought up in almost every video of this channel, so I guess it's time to desist. After all, this is NOT an official competition, it's just entertainment in a nice format so they're entitled to do as they want.
      And it's still kind of entertaining, so... let's accept it as it is, I say.

      +Kumpel Blase You should try it sometimes. 20+ or even 50+ rep squats... with and without belt. Belt makes it harder for high rep sets because you cant breathe with him as good as you can without it

    • @tr.o.ubadour6559
      @tr.o.ubadour6559 9 років тому

      BodybuildingRev Then it was probably just the camera angle. It's interesting, because if Bertrand would have squattet only parallel, he might have finished them faster, which would've given him more time for the dips, where he seemed exhausted because of the benchpress. That probably would've made the fight even closer. It's also about tactics, it seems.

    Doesn't it take away a bit of the idea of Bertrand representing calisthenics when he's actually doing barbell exercises as training for the competition?
    For example, when you bring powerlifters, oly weightlifters and bodybuilders even though they perform the same exercises they usually have pretty different training protocols. How can you fare the effectiveness of doing calisthenics in comparison to the others if he's doing suplementary work with barbells?

    • @getrekt7613
      @getrekt7613 9 років тому

      Because it's a meathead circlejerk.
      Just throw in a muscle up, and the competition is done, since all other types of "athletes" they feature can't do anything else than benchpress, deadlift and squat.

    • @kblkbl
      @kblkbl 9 років тому

      Get Rekt I don't think the muscle up is the best raw strength exercise in calisthenics. If you notice the bodybuilder actually won in the dips, what's the excuse for it?
      They could've put some pullups too.
      What I said is that Bertrand's performance in this video doesn't display perfectly the transition of a calisthenic athlete into these exercises. There are some videos in this channel where Romano goes out to try Parkour and Calisthenics IIRC, he never trained them before so it's a perfect display of how a weightlifter would fare in such environment. This video doesn't achieve the same.

  • @GeorgRauser
    @GeorgRauser 9 років тому +2

    Very cool video!
    But I think 20x 100kg bench press/20x +50kg dips and 20x 100kg Squats is not in the right relation.

  • @typedeaf
    @typedeaf 8 років тому

    In a competition including Bench, Squats and Dips, the shorter limbed person always has the advantage due to the range of motion. If you looked at work done, force x displacement, the taller person actually does significantly more work. They should include an exercise the gives the advantage to the taller person, like curls or anything using leverage.

  • @rodtemplado9453
    @rodtemplado9453 8 років тому +1

    For a competition for physical strength or power your videos are good. It would be better though if you'd add some agility/dexterity and endurance/stamina in your menus. Its kind of biased when you only include weight-lifting. This would give people false impression that one thing is better than the other when it can only be true in specific circumstances.

    Did anyone else notice the difference in squats? What's that all about - 20 half squats vs 20 full squats? Why not lay out a set of ground rules so each competitor does the exercise the same way, because one is basically cheating reps while the other is doing it properly.

  • @odysseasboyrniasvarotsis9308

    These exercises were heavily biased in favor of the men's physique model. You picked 2 exercises which have nothing to do with calisthenic training and 1 exercise which is loosely related with calisthenics but still many bodybuilders and powerlifters include in their training regime. Why not choose muscle ups, one armed pull ups, double clap push ups e.t.c in the competition to even things out? I am suprised that the calisthenic athlete agreed to participate in this contest.
    Still, great production and awesome choice of music. Keep up the good work!
