- This has been my most requested video ever and to be honest it's taken me forever to do it because laziness BUT better late than never 🙃 I'll be showing you guys different stages of algae growth on some of my plants with no drainage, simple tips to slow down algae growth, and also how I flush out my vessels. It's also our first ever video in October and of course I had to spookify it a little. 👻

Soil Scientist here 🙂 You want Algae in your soil. It helps provide oxygen and prevents against an anaerobic environment. Root rot for example is an anaerobic bacteria. I did a whole video on the science of this.
Whoa a soil scientist!! I’m fangirling 😂 thank you for bringing that up! I do use marphyl soil enhancer almost every watering which is marine phytoplankton based fertilizer- do you think this is enough to supplement the algae being removed from the sides of the vessel when I flush them? I appreciate your input!
Glad you mentioned this! I have never found algae to be very detrimental to the plants health. Although I get it may not be altogether pleasant in appearance, I agree with wanting some present for the oxygen it helps produce.
Please film a sister-mother-grandma houseplant tour I’m interested in their line up 👀
44:19 i hate separating leca from my soil mix when i want to reuse them 🙃 i used to pick it up one by one too, then i made a "strainer" from old plastic pot, drilled some holes big enough so the other substrates can pass through. Just a bit of shakey-shake then done. It's definitely time saver.
Whoa!! That’s actually an amazing idea- maybe I’ll try to do something like this too!
How do you get the algae off the pon?
@@purrshark you can soak it in diluted hydrogen peroxide or physan20 and then pour the excess water out. Or you can just kill the algae by stop giving them light source, try using cover pot with your clear pot.
I know you've mentioned ADHD before, I'm not sure if that was a casual thing or if you actually have it, but as an ADHDer myself I can say your sensory issues are most likely related. Being picky about clothing, jewelry, blankets, anything that touches us can be a sensory nightmare. Bandaids would fall into that.
ADHDers are more accident prone, especially when we are overwhelmed/distracted.
Women often go undiagnosed for a long time, and are usually diagnosed with anxiety and depression disorders before realizing they are ADHD. This was certainly the case for me.
Apologies if you're already aware of all this, but this information was such a lightbulb moment for me and I want to spread awareness! I also don't mean to diagnose people on the internet, again just spreading awareness. Hopefully who needs this information reads it ❤️
Hi Alex!! I am diagnosed with ADHD actually and it’s so interesting how we can spot one another from a mile away 😆 I was undiagnosed for a LONG time which was why I had such a hard time through grade school up until college. I found a lot of clarity in my adult years as I began to really look at myself and get professional help. But you hit the nail on the head on every point, and I know your intention wasn’t to diagnose over the internet, but if someone had not mentioned it to me years ago I probably wouldn’t have gone to get help.. so I’m grateful! 🖤
@@unplantparenthood exactly, that's why I try to be tactful about how I mention it, someone might get diagnosed because of what I say! I have a friend IRL who got his diagnosis because I talk about ADHD. I wonder how much earlier I could have been diagnosed if I knew what ADHD even was hah. I think I'm gonna make a video about my diagnosis journey
You are so awesome!!! I came across your channel when you did your Ikea greenhouse video. I do fell in love 😍 with Pudge and have been watching all of your videos since!! You are my absolute favorite plant UA-camr!! I want to sincerely thank you for sharing your knowledge and I’ve successfully followed your advice.
Yes, thank you for sharing your course perlite/pon combo tips!
You're welcome!! I've enjoyed using pon WAY more since the addition of perlite. I hope it works well for you too!
Pudge is sooo cute! I love his comments ❤️
My coarse perlite just arrived today and I ordered it for the same reason 🤯🤯🤯 Great minds think alike 😎😎
omg i'd love to see where you got the gloriosum pop socket ^__^
I thought the same does the person who made them have a page you can direct us to buy from by chance ? I need one in my life !!
Hoping this will motivate me to clean up some algae. I may just spray paint my clear vases, or at least the bottom part and see if that helps slow down the algae bloom.
I'm impressed! For someone with ADHD, you sure have tons of patience to divide and separate all that leca and pon! 😆🙌👏
I don’t celebrate Halloween but the slightly spooky music is somehow really calming and enjoyable 👽
We've been using shudder for the last few years, especially around spooky season, and LOVE IT! All the scares you need😈💀🕷🕸
I’m back to properly watch the whole video (:
I popped in for the premier! 🥰 pudge is just the cutest!!!!! Also I love his name. Does he control the weather and like peanut butter sandwiches? 😉
She uploads two videos a week but Iam a Charmaine junky so i rewatch every video cause it’s still not enough for me 😂
Love this content - thank you. Any tips on controlling algae growth on moss poles? 😬🙏♥️
I also loooove the smell of philodendrons. I feel like my Dark Lord is one of the more fragrant ones, too. It’s almost perfume-y!
I agree I love the smell of philodendrons too! Love all your videos!
Someone please make it a candle scent!!
Paused at 44:07 when my husband called my name. he walked in the room shortly after, saw my screen, then asked me why I was watching someone make quinoa and cocoa puffs 😆
Welcome to my new UA-cam channel “I can’t cook” 😂
I use my regular pots to boil my plant stuff 😅 and I'm nor apologizing
Always enjoy your videos, now for the demonetize bull crap- I hope you get it all figured out, along with your identity! People can be so horrible. Thankfully it was caught, so hopefully nothing comes of it.
I hope you get to enjoy your trip home, much love to you and pudge!!!
Thank you so so much Cassie! I’m so excited to go home I can hardly sleep!!
You're so cute! Where is your t-shirt from?!
Also, In love with your dog and the demogorgon costume 😍 🖤
Please kindly give information about the pop socket...i want one...
I saw someone who put a sock around their containers to keep algae growth down
Where did you find black leca?! I’ve never only seen black ceramic “horticultural pearls” on amazon but the black looks AMAZING with the green of your plants!!!
I actually have only been able to find it at one nursery local to me (vandula farms), but I bet you might be able to find some through a google search if you look up "black hydroton clay balls" !
ohhh yes, I'm so up for this one yaaaaay
where did you get the black leca from? i looked amazon and didnt see it there
Thank you now I know what to do.
u should put ur microrizae into salt shaker i feel like it would be way easier for u to shake it on ur plants like seasoning lol
Shut the front door!!! I need that!!
Love the pop socket!! Please share
I actually got it from someone local but she may still be selling them! You can e-mail her at sheryl.huang@gmail.com :)
Thankkkkkk youuuuuuuu!
Where did you get that lovely pop socket?
Great Video 👏🏼👍🪴👍👏🏼! Question? You put regular perlite in your pon and the regular perlite also, gets sterilized via boiling each time you sterilize?
It does get sterilized with my pon! 🤍
@@unplantparenthood Girl...I Luvs You!!! I have learned soo much from you and I appreciate how you answer my questions. 👏🏼🪴💜🪴👏🏼
The piney philodendron smell is the best i want a candle and perfume and toilet spray in philodendron scent it’s like year round almost wintery like scent it’s DELISH
wintery PINE ugh
I've heard many people are repulsed by the smell and I'm just like.. HOW?! It's the most magical smell ever and honestly if it was every a candle or spray-- TAKE MY MONEY
I’ve been toying with the idea of putting springtails in my no drainage plants and prop boxes. They eat decaying plant matter, mold, algae, etc. I know they are used in terrariums and vivariums, so it’s a good idea for potted plants right?
I have springtails in my plants. Didn't put them there on purpose...but I'm not mad about it. 🤣 I only use colored glass so I can't say for sure if it helps for algae but it for sure hasn't hurt any of my babies!
Open up memberships! Let us help you worry less about demonitization! :( I hate the idea of you having to change what you're doing to appease the YT overlords. :(
Are you doing 50/50 for peroxide and water?
Yes :)
Why do you not want algae growing in your perlite? Is it for any other reason than aesthetics? Sorry if you already answered this in the video
I’m not really concerned about algae growing in the substrate itself, it’s moreso trying to flush the algae that’s built up on the edges of the pot, like you said, for aesthetic reasons!
You need a sifter
Where do you get black Lecca?
I actually have only been able to find it at one nursery local to me (vandula farms), but I bet you might be able to find some through a google search if you look up "black hydroton clay balls" !
