      Since they couldn't get any new people due to their reputation, they'd move any old body they thought they could control into management, then have them spy on us. They'd write people up when they didn't like them, inventing the seriousness of the infraction (for 1 person, that same infraction would garner a slap on the hand, others would be fired). They didn't want you to leave your desk, they didn't want you to talk, that company was a sheer horror show.

      Before i began studying acca accoubting, i started as an accounting secretary. I required a work experience position to get my diploma and i found a small company called blackwater finance. Long story short, it was a partnership between a busjness consultant and a finance executive. There entirw staff were foreign kids that looked like they were all part of college etc, no one over 23. No one could speak english and our job was translating business consulting ebooks onto whichever language we were proficient in, mine being german, even though i was irish, same as the partners. Looking at my cv, all he saw was german speaking and secretary, he skiped accounting and i was ultimately left unpaid, untrained and unprepared to atart work in finance. Absolute waste of my time

    I was in an interview where the senior manager seemed to be overly critical about my experience. While I was surprised that she hired me, I accepted the position because I really like the work they do. 3 months after, I’m on my way out because of the unbearable toxic environment created by this person.

      Thank you for sharing your story as this is such a great example of a red flag. I'm sorry you went through this but what a great opportunity to learn from. Trust your instincts in future job interviews - if your gut says something doesn't feel right then don't accept the job. One of the hardest things to do in job search is say no to a job offer. Make sure you ask really good questions around organizational culture to find out how they treat employees. If you need help with this, please contact me through my website www.virtualjobsearchcoach.com and I would be happy to book a coaching session with you. I can teach you what questions to ask to determine if this is a good employer and work environment or not. 🌞

      @VirtualJobSearchCoach  3 роки тому

      That's a great one Mani! It is sad how often I've seen this - where a manager or interviewer says bad things about a previous employee to a potential candidate in an interview - it's very unprofessional. Thanks for your comment! 🌞

      @Neel1567 That sounds like a wise decision. If the manager speaks badly about a past employee it is unprofessional and is a red flag that they may speak about you like that one day. Thanks for sharing your example! 🌞

    3 worst jobs I ever had:
    1. Went for interview, it was a 6 month contract with the possibility to extend a few months longer depending on need. I asked how it arose, it was to cover someone on long-term sick. I wish to god I`d asked what for. Due to bullying at work she had a breakdown. Turned up, saw the state of 2 colleagues and the manager (on a team of 6 including me) and my heart sank. Pure vile evil.
    2. Agency job, didn`t need to interview with the employer, turned up and quickly discovered everyone harassing and abusing people. Including my line manager and the department manager.
    3. Civil Service through agency, didn`t need to interview with the employer, exactly the same problem as number 2.
    Dont take a job when you dont interview with at least your team leader, and if you dont get a tour to see who you will be working with first. Ask and probe deep to uncover all problems.

    Worked for a very dishonest employer! Spent a year running a particular department without any additional pay...when the employer finally posted the job? It was given to someone with far less experience, and I was left with no thanks or compensation. After 9 years, it was time to go..

    I was in an interview where the hiring manager seemed a little disheveled and I was a little bit desperate to find work so I took it on. I had been hunting for about year+. I learned a lot from the company and it was a good experience to increase my skillset but the leadership's personalities were quite toxic.

    When I asked a prospective employer over the phone, "What type of restaurant is your business? Is it fast food? Casual dining or fine dining?" He replied, "Everything! Come Wednesday to try job!" Felt weird so told him thanks but no thanks. He wouldn't even tell me the name of the business and did not seem to know what type of business he was running and would not tell me his name.

    This video is brilliant and spot on! 2021 was a ROUGH year for me. I was the victim of bait-and-switch interview deceit TWICE when I accepted job offers that were the complete opposite of the job description. I made the rookie mistake of rushing to accept an offer when trying to leave a toxic environment with a bad supervisor, which caused burnout and stress. I jumped from the frying pan into the fire.
    So I'm glad that you acknowledge this can happen and put it on the list!
    I hope that you are well. I understand life happens, so when it's best, I hope that you have time to put up more content like this!

    Your last tip is pure gold. In the interview for a previous job, I was informed that an offer had gone out to the new director, but they wouldn't provide me with any information about the new manager. It was bad from day one. There was no welcome and zero interest in getting to know me and my work. Most incompetent manager I ever had.

    Last month, I took a job as an addiction counselor in a methadone clinic. The boss constantly becomes angry because of the low Medicaid reimbursements, requests that I break the law, and has cut my hours after asking that I clock out when there are no clients available. Yesterday, I had his brother throw a trash can at me. I gave them a two week notice but I'm tempted to shorten it. I learned that people tend to last about 30 days before quitting. I learned my lesson about failing to research companies before taking jobs.

    In any position of any profession there are the three
    Ps:
    Personally
    Politi
    Performance
    This is especially true in small organizations even so in small first responder units. The ambience or subculture may not be what one wants to work in.

    See I was just let go today after less than 30 days. From the interview for 1 company (they are together next to each other) I knew I didnt get that job after no contact for two weeks to randomly on a Friday if I could work for the other company. I made a mistake and no coaching or warning they just let me go. This was finally after 3 weeks of training (which should have been 2) but they werent going to give me logins or the key to the office. I knew then they didnt want me and from day one people were rude to me. I felt sad and embarrassed but now I am relieved. Also 2 hours after my firing, they posted my position but 2 dollars less an hour.

    • @VirtualJobSearchCoach

      That is such a great question and I wish I had a simple answer for you. I’ve been seeking a clear answer on this for months. I’ve sought advice from 3 employment lawyers on this subject and they all basically say the same thing:
      1) Employment law regarding COVID-19 and the vaccines are still developing.
      2) Employers generally can ask an employee if they have been vaccinated in order to determine possible accommodations. However, employers cannot ask their employees if they have been vaccinated in order to penalize their employees (that would potentially be a human rights violation).
      Having said that, each country, state and province may determine their own employment laws with regards to COVID-19 and vaccination, so as the laws do develop they may not be the same everywhere.
      My best advice at this point is to check if your local Employment Standards Act has been updated yet regarding vaccination, contact your local labour standards office and or human rights office for guidance. 🌞

    If an employer uses your meeting times and every minute you clock in early in exchange for PTO time, is this a bad employer?

    • @VirtualJobSearchCoach
      @VirtualJobSearchCoach  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your question Carol. If I am understanding you correctly in that your employer is clocking every minute in exchange for "Paid Time Off" - then it is hard to simply say it is a bad employer, however I would question whether I would want to work for an employer who is that strict! Without knowing all the details of your role and the work environment or why your employer is doing this - it may be that they have had bad experiences with past employees that took advantage by showing up late, taking too long on breaks etc and that drove them to move towards a strict time-tracking system to make sure they aren't being taken advantage of..... or if it is a production environment it is common to have a clock in/clock out timecard system which does track by the minute. If it is 'white-collar' corporate office environment then this form of time tracking would be unusual. If you feel this type of time tracking is treating you unfairly or that you are being taken advantage of, you could ask your employer to explain to you why they track time like this.....if you aren't satisfied with the answer then it may be time to consider looking for a new employer. Unfortunately there are employers out there who are unethical and do not abide by the law, but there are may more who are wonderful to work for, value their employees and treat them fairly and respectfully. Regardless of what country or state/province you are in - you do have rights under employment law and if you feel you are being taken advantage of then I would highly encourage you to check into your local labour laws (you should be able to find it easily with a quick internet search). Know your rights and it will help you determine if it is time to look for another job. I hope that helps. 🌞
