The ancient Greek war leader Themistocles saved the Greek world from the Persians in an important naval battle. He was then exiled because the Athenians didn't like that he reminded them that they owed him. The Athenians had a practice of voting to ostracize people who were viewed as dangerous to their democracy. He died in Persia the country that his war victories were against. Ironic and sad.
Another famous author who was exiled, Victor Hugo famous for writing Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Misérables was exiled for being critical of Napoleon the III but he was able to return after Napoleon the III was defeated.

If anyone's interested in a documentary about Dante's political, historical and cultural background I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's 700th anniversary of Dante's death special
In antiquity, especially pre-civilization, exile was basically a death sentence with extra steps. It boiled down to "we don't want to kill you _ourselves,_ so we're gonna kick you out and if god(s) want you to survive then they'll do something about it. If you die, it's because that was divine will." Since living without a support structure, especially if you have no marketable skills, a market in which to apply them, or possessions/money is VERY difficult, everyone knew that it was a very harsh punishment. Kind of like being a convicted felon today, except that the Prison Industrial Complex is way, way, WAY worse. "Rehabilitation" my ass.
0:38 Literature hero Ezra Pound identified three works as being the most influential for his masterpiece The Cantos: x Metamorphoses by Ovid x The Divine Comedy by Dante x The Odyssey by Homer

It is fine to inform about ancient cases, but it is surprising that you didn't mention two big names from the modern era: Victor Hugo in France and Leon Trotsky in Russia. The case of Emma Goldman raises a serious Constitutional problem because she was expelled solely for expressing her ideas. The questionable anti-anarchist law may not even applied to her. You said "a dash of violence", but she was not convicted of that. You even note that she was in jail for protesting the US entry into Wilson's entry into WWI. You could say that she was trying to help the American people, unlike Wilson. That leads to the opposite case, that of a government preventing a person from leaving a country. Such a case is that of Paul Robeson who was a world-acclaimed singer, actor...and activist. The US government seized his passport to prevent him from leaving the US because it did not like his ideas being expressed abroad. As to your more than questionable statement about Napoleon, "most of Europe breathed a sigh of relief", that did not apply to the common people whom he had liberated from the old aristocratic regimes. If Napoleon was so detested, how did he raise a major army in 100 days and narrowly lose the battle against the huge aristocratic coalition against him? Another reason the Old-Regime states didn't like him is that he first emancipated Jews and made them citizens in France and then he extended that to the countries that he had liberated. It is weird that you seem to be introducing opinion into your historical accounts. I appreciate your efforts, but you can do better. Some other history channels, such as The History Guy, do not give their opinions but cite what historical figures have said. The problem is that most viewers will not use this as a starting point for investigation, but will think that they have learned something and go on to the next snippet.
