  • Trying To Get Hank Marvin (The Shadows) Echo Delay Using Two Any Delay/Echo Effect Pedals
For this video, I used the following delay effect pedals:
    - Electro-Harmonix Memory Boy (analog delay)
    - TC Electronic Flashback Delay (in analog type)
Electric Guitar used in this recording:
    - Handmade John Mayer's Black1 Stratocaster replica, Freijó (Brazilian-Walnut) body, nitrocellulose finish, Canadian maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, Wilkinson Gold Hardware, steel tremolo block, Fender Custom Shop Texas Special pickups, and a 0.022uF Orange Drop Capacitor
The amplifier used in this recording:
    - Fender Mustang™ III (V.2), simulating the VOX AC30 amplifier
The most popular Hank Marvin gear:
    - Guitar: Fender Stratocaster®, ¿ash? body, fiesta red paint, gold hardware, bird's eye maple on maple neck
    - Pickups: Kinman Impersonator 54 (or the current FV-HMS); Fender Custom Shop '54; Seymour Duncan Vintage Staggered SSL1 (neck and middle) and DiMarzio FS-1 (bridge)***
    - Amplifier: VOX AC15 and AC30
    - Echo: Meazzi Echomatic, Alesis Q20, TVS 3
    - Tremolo arm (Easy-Mute Guitar Tremolo Arm)
For more affordable pickups, take a look at:
    - Ironstone ‘Gold’ Stratocaster pickups (ironstone-guita...)
    - Tonerider "Pure Vintage" Stratocaster pickups (www.tonerider.c...)

I found this works pretty good with that method for the delay if you have a second pedal, will need a little bit of extra adjustment with other delay pedals (mine are Carl martin) but any delay should work just as well.

+johnthelad Thank you very much for your comment. As Hank uses different echo times and repeats for each song, for some of them you would need three or more delay pedals to get the right configuration! Best regards.

I use Gibson deluxes ( mini humbuckers ) and always play apache live on the bridge pickup, strats would sound great with a gibson mini humbucker in the bridge position, ( none of that awful buzz ) trying out an nu.x Atlantic live and am getting excellent results with it, you can tap in eighths, the reverbs are also really good, the delays are one thing, the TONE is another.

i’ve got Fender Pure Vintage 59’s in my Strat… a great set that gets really close to Hanks tone. of course using Tape Delay into an AC15/AC30 is essential as well

    Thank you! Oldie but Goldie!
With your vid i managed to achive the Apache delay sound on my Mooer Ocean Machine wich provides 2 seperate delays.

If you have a amplifier with built in delay then im guessing if you use one delay pedal and work it along with the delay from the amp you should get the same close shadows/ hank sound i think anyway 🤔

Close but not quite. He misses the fact that the 3rd echo is actually at 600ms, which means the distance between the 2nd and 3rd is 170ms and not 130ms as it ends up being here. The echo timings are:
    130ms
    430ms
    600ms
The closest you can get with 2 pedals is setting the first echo at 150ms, right in the middle of 130 and 170. 1st and 3rd echo will then both be 20ms off.

Haha.. well I get laid plenty. My father is a Shadows fanatic and I had to play Apache for his 70th birthday, so I wanted to get it right 🙂

I'm going to try dialing-in this tone on my brand-new Boss Katana 100 MkII 1 X 12 amp, each of the 8 channels can have up to 5 effects chained in series, turns-out it was easier than I thought it was, I set the delay effect-type to Tape Delay, ms to 130 and 430 respectively, but I found that I had to set the wet-mix level to 70% for both delays, I also added some Plate Reverb, sounds pretty close to what you're getting here, feedback for each delay was set to 0.

Thanks, this really helped me nail it.
I used 2x Echoplex 3 models and plenty of spring reverb. Great method of working out the times with the software.

When I listen to Apache on my Genelec studio monitors and play along on my strat it really sounds to me like he recorded using the middle PU. If you use a completely clean sound the three PUs on a strat sound recognisably different. Live, Hank uses the treble PU though.

he’s definitely on the bridge on the recording. there’s that nasal honk going on that only a bridge can do. on “Foot tapper” he’s playing in the middle pickup though.

    Hi,
Thanks Gustavo, for that! One step closer to the unique Hank sound!
Now I have a 508 (programmed to Brian Strachan's settings for each of the main Shadows pieces), linked to a ZOOM G2.1u (Echo/Delay Off!), plus I have a Behringer DDR400 doing nothing. Any ideas of how to use 2 or more of these welcome. Gustavo mentions more complex echoes for certain pieces.
Marvellous if Gustavo could extend the idea to 3 Echo/delay units. Actually just ballpark figures would be enough to kick off.
    Thanks again!

+Erich Leonhard Hi, Erich. Thank you very much for your comments! I have a Zoom G3 that I can use up to 6 delay effect pedals in series at each patch! As I've seen in Zoom G2 manual, you can use up to two delays in the same patch.
You might consider to use G2 instead of 508 as I've read you can get great patches for Hank Marvin echoes with it. Charlie Hall said Zoom 508 is not as good as Zoom G2 to get Hank echoes (charliehall.proboards.com/thread/4116/get-hank-marvin-sounds).
Several patches use 2, 3 or even 4 delay pedals. So, to use your three pedals, I suggest you to: get the software Edit&Share from Zoom website (www.zoom.co.jp/sites/default/files/products/downloads/software/E_Edit_Share_Win_v5_0.zip); downlaod some HM patches (guitarpatches.com/patches.php?mode=show&unit=g3&ID=8638); and copy manualy these patches settings to use your three, or four (since G2 have two) delay pedals!
Plese, let me know if I can help you. Best regards.

      Hi Gustavo,
I now have a G2.1u plus the G2 I just dug up wired with the G2 as Delay1with guitar input, and G2.1u as Delay 2 with total output to amp or phones. Please give me a broad outline as to how to proceed from here. I don't want to just keep mucking about with my own ideas!! Grateful for that.
      Regards, Erich.
PS You mentioned that the G2.1u has 2 delays. Does this mean that instead of the 2 delay units you have used in the video above, I need use only one unit to start with? But your comment to johnthelad below says that some songs require more pedals to get the more complex echo/delay patterns required. so then a second delay comes into play. Am I thinking right? E.

I use GR 5, any tips or pre-set please ?
I notice in the vid, you do the second delay first and the first delay second.....also.
    1st is 430ms. 2nd is 130ms ( Q is there a 3rd ? ref comments ).

    • @gugarl
      @gugarl  7 років тому

Hi, David. You can change the order of pedals, it will work the same. This preset is for Apache, that have 3 echoes. The first delay will repeat your pluck (one echoe), and the second delay will repeat your pluck and also the first delay echoe (two echoes). If you can set two or more delay effects at GR5, then you can do almost all Shadows Echoes!

ok three heads,,,,,,,,,,so where is the Multi Tap in the individual heads?,,,,Hank Marvin has a three heads,,with an individual Multitap to each delay....,,,,,,,,you know Hank has it,that only Quadraverd 2 can do,,,,,,,its not easy to set up this with three delay heads with Multitap,to each other,,,,,,,,without a multi tap to each heads is very easy just like this Video,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    • @gugarl
      @gugarl  7 років тому +1

Thanks for commenting. A multi tap delay is a delay in which there are multiple delays interacting simultaneously on th same dry path. I am just trying to show alternative cheaper ways. You can also buy a Meazzi Echomatic, Alesis Q20 or TVS 3 to get Hank Marvin echoes. Best regards.

Here's a tip, if you're playing a Stratocaster style guitar, play with the whammy bar like Hank Marvin does to get even closer to the sound.
