Music is not just to hear, but to feel. No one makes me feel like Amira. You mentioned the trumpet and orchestra. The reason they sound so good is they not only play the notes, but push emotions of the music. Some can sing and play notes, but without the emotions, it is not music.

Another Aussie welcoming you back to the magnificent sounds of Amira. Hey man, you’ve got a lot of catching up to do. There are a couple of Amira’s performances which aren’t strictly Operatic, but show us her amazing versatility . So when you get a moment, your reactions to the following will be greatly appreciated.
…. … Sound of Music medley at age of 15. Amira sings one octave above the original by Julie Andrews & absolutely nails it.
…. … When you Wish Upon a Star at age 17. I know you will appreciate how difficult this “simple” song is to sing, especially given the slow tempo & the breath control necessary to sustain the beautiful tone she produces throughout. I don’t believe many current day performers would even attempt to do what Amira does with this song. It is amazing breath & voice control.
I understand Amira has taken this year to perform & tour overseas before continuing her music studies in 2024.
How incredible will this young lady be when her voice fully matures, probably in her mid twenties? Wow!! That is something we can all look forward to.
Cheers once again ( after 12 months),
      Graeme.

If you like Amira, check out her friend about her age, Alma Deutscher. A friend with an equal, but different talent. Composer, violinist a ten million dollar Stradivarius permanent loaner, pianist, and now, with a year’s instruction, conductor. Just conducted her revised opera, CINDERELLA, in San Jose. Her third opera, THE EMPEROR’S NEW WALTZ, was just performed in Salzburg; I haven’t seen any English reviews of it. Her most common reviews are from her sold-out Carnegie Hall concert of her work. There is a video of the two girls singing the STEPSISTERS DUET from her CINDERELLA opera together.

You spoke of the internalized "instrument" becoming visually externalized through body movement. That's true. But another thing with Amira's expressiveness is the fact that she has a deep, committed, and very outspoken faith in God & Jesus Christ. Hence, she is feeling, believing, and expressing the truth of every word she is singing. She is sweet and humble to a fault, but is courageous in her Christian faith and values.

    I've missed you. It's been a while.
This was a part of Amira 's 18th birthday concert. She sang about a dozen songs in about an hour, with just a couple of pauses to do a quick change of dress.
The conductor is Richard Cock, he first worked with Amira in South Africa on her first tour aged about 11. He knows her quite well.
The Trumpeter is Donald Bouwer, and the pianist is Devereux van der Hoven- Oosthuizen. I believe she arranged Amira's celebrated performance of Amazing Grace. Amira sung an Italian version of I will always love you at this 18th concert, and the piano is stupendous on that track. It's a shame it's not been released to YT yet. She says more will be out eventually. There is a cd of the full concert, barring the song introductions and chat, but no dvd. The only other song from it on YT is La Califfa based on an Ennio Morricone film theme. It is backed by stills of Amira, so you don't see her singing it.
There is a part of a documentary showing Amira receiving a masterclass from an opera singer, aged about 13 or 14, the singer uses her fingers on Amira's cheeks to get the sound to resonate at the front of her mouth rather than the back. Being a singer she knew about air flow and way's to control it. Another vocal coach, analysing Amira's singing in a video, talked about her diaphragm work, and the strength of her lungs. He likened her to a Swan, apparently effortless above, but working underneath. It's all true.
Anyway, nice to see you back. Would you like to post your reaction to her singing Gesu Bambino? It's from early this year, and her note control is spectacular. I sure you will enjoy it.

i too must recommend Gesu Bambino (Baby Jesus), i believe she was almost 19 here. Commenting on this song on YT, Andrew says, "She went back to the Netherlands to see her dad and to organise a fan day over Christmas. She and her father visited her old church, her father played the organ, recording done by boyfriend or perhaps brother. No microphones or much preparation. Just delivered that beautiful Italian Christmas Carol. The chorus is Venite Adoremus repeated, which translate as Come and adore him. It's an Italian Oh come all ye faithful. I think the shy smile is directed at the camera operator, rather than the camera. She isn't shy of them." Also, here we see Amira in street clothes, no makeup, no huge production, just her natural beauty with her humble dad in the quiet background. Her beautiful talent and soul reach out and touch your innermost being in this experience; i put Gesu Bambino in my top 5 performances - here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/c5MiyNTZKHY/v-deo.html A must to experience and react to!

Hey, good to see you back reacting to Amira. She is such a great singer and never ceases to impress!
You stated in your intro that you were reacting to other singers as well, Wondered if you had ever heard of the following other European singers.
    Aleksandra Spicberga; a young Latvian singer . You could maybe try the following songs from her;
Karalienes Dziesma, accompanied by Vladimirs Kudrins
Ave Maria, Either by Gomez or Schubert.
Kyrie Eleison, accompanied by the male vocal group
    Suitu Lugsna- official music video
Dane Stilund Nielsen; a young Danish singer who sings with the Danish National Girls Choir
    Solveigs SangLux
    Aases Bon-Heise
Dynamite performed by Dafne and younger sister Xenia on piano
    Morgen- R Strauss
    Lyse Naetter
Speaking of which, the Danish Girls Choir is renowned for their singing and interpretation
    Nunc Dimittis
    O Magnum Mysterium(Morten Lauridson)
    Blackbird
    Lux Aurumque
Like i said, great to see and hear you reacting to Amira, as she is such a talent, and is really not too well known here in Canada or North America. Keep up the good work and stay safe out in B.C

It's fun that you point out the physical expression with the hands. It can be indicative when you have just one singer, they're going to go up, or down, or pause. Most of the time it's just emphasis, like putting an exclamation point on something, or a comma. It can get interesting with a group of singers, though. Pentatonix is a good example. You could tell in their early years that they were taught to keep it to a minimum. They did very little hand expressions then tucked it away quickly, almost stuffing their hands in their pockets. As the years went on they got less self conscious about it and decided they were free to choose with no choral directer to tell them how "professional" performers did it. Now Kevin freely plays his invisible drums, Scott flaps around with his index fingers, Avi used to play a mean air guitar, even Matt has loosened up. But they're each doing something different. It can get distracting so in this case the old choral director was right. What Amira is doing here is very pretty and looks better than standing stiffly still. It can all go terribly wrong though. Take a look at the old clips of Joe Cocker. He looked like he needed meds.

It's interesting that during Amira 's first audition on HGT, her reflection in the judges desk shows her windmilling her right arm quite animatedly. She might have been told it was distracting, as in the two follow up songs, she holds her hands quite still. She often uses them to flag the pitch or strength though, particularly if the song has a climactic ending. I find it endearing.

Simple church music was intended for ordinary people to sing. So when someone professional sings it, perhaps it is easier to appreciate? Also there is less going on in the construction so things stand out?

I want to tell you about a very special singer from Norway. Her name is Sissel Kyrkjebø and she is also the national treasure of Norway. Sissel has been travelling all around the world and performed duets with a long list of singers, like Placido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, Jose Carreras, Josh Groban, Neil Sedaka and Brian May. Could you react to some of Sissel's performances? Her performances of songs like "O mio babbino caro", "Pie Jesu" and "O Holy Night" are just amazing.

I would have liked to hear this without the orchestral backing which is “muffling” the purity of Amira’s voice. Beautiful though.
