Yes, I agree. My favourite train trip in the UK. The scenery is magnificent and gets more interesting as the train travels west. Years ago, there used to be "afternoon tea" trips on this train, but this is probably discontinued. Thank you for this video.
This video and location looks great I will comment once complete West Highland line and Kyle of Localsh this summer. Nice video good narration for inspiration 🏴
I posted a package at Strathcarron Post Office last year whilst driving from Inverness to Skye. It shares the same building as the railway station and hotel. Not very busy it's only open 13.30 to 15.30 Wednesday and Friday ! Excellent video 👍
One of my favourite rail trips during my big trip from downunder in September/October 2018. I did the full round trip in one day from Inverness to Kyle, then road coach over the bridge to Skye and down to Armadale, then ferry across to Mallaig, Jacobite Steam Train from Mallaig to Fort William and, finally, road coach Fort William to Inverness. Was based in Inverness for a week and also did the Far North Line and a round trip Inverness-Aberdeen-Dundee-Perth-Inverness as well as local trips to the Strathsey Railway and Pitlochry, Urquhart Castle and Fort Augustus.
That is a genuinely amazing trip! I'm always amazed that in the highlands a lot of the rail infrastructure is older than most living people, its amazing feats of engineering in amazing parts of the world. I have a far North Line Video out if you want to check that out. I'm planning on doing a lot more travel related videos in Scotland so if you have any requests then please just leave them down below as I do want to showcase what people want to see as well as the maybe less known.
Thanks for the video. I'd ridden this line in December of 1993. I was the only person boarding on a snow laden Saturday Morning in Inverness, so I suppose ridership has increased 7 fold over the years😉
I went to Aberdeen University in the 1970s. As part of the students charities campaign we would hire a train from Aberdeen-Inverness-Kyle-of-Lochalsh. We had a great time. One year the train got stuck in very heavy snow and we the students actually had to dig the the train out of the snow. Happy memories.
Scenery was stunning, there was one area I’d love to go explore I felt quite drawn to it. Thanks for showing us another great adventure on our doorstep 😊 nice of the sun to come out at the end
I used to ride this line daily as a trolly dolly lol spent a summer doing it, from Inverness to Kyle, quick lunch and straight back. It was a brilliant summer
@@welshlad6427 It was brilliant mate I only left Scotrail because they put me on the Aberdeen route, I was more of a Tour Guide on the Kyle route than anything else
Michael Palin travelled on this line for the 1980's 'Great Railway Journeys of the World' series, it is truly world class. I have travelled on both this line and The West Highland Line and I prefer Inverness - Kyle.
@@WorldWide_Dom It's my favourite railway documentary of all time. Kyle of Lochalsh still looks the same as it did when Michael Palin arrived in May 1980
Greetings from the California coast. Don't know why your video popped up in my suggestions, but I thought I recognized the name. Back in 1998 I was on a tour with a group of Scottish country dancers (mostly from California), and we stayed a couple of nights at a hotel a few miles down the road in the direction of Eilean Donan. I can't remember the name of the place where we stayed. But we had a Sunday afternoon with nothing scheduled so a few of us took a taxi over to Kyle of Lochalsh and walked around. Of course the railroad tracks that end at the shore were very distinctive. Only a couple of places in town were open. One was a souvenir shop by the tracks. The other was, if I remember correctly, a pub or restaurant with a very small bookstore inside. We browsed the books and chatted with a few locals. What an incredibly beautiful piece of creation.
I may just be trying to tempt you here as, well, I know the weather can't compete with that glorious California sunshine but I would definitely recommend another trip, the town & area has really picked up since the tourism really took off in the early 2010's. Thanks for the comment, sounds like you had a great trip.
Fine video, despite the inclement weather still with magnificent views. Britain's best known living train spotter, Michael Palin close to 40 years or more ago, took this line for the Great Railway Journeys series to obtain in part, the old station signage to take back home (presumably by train). During the summer at least, the line should get more patronage.
Im lucky enough to live near kyle and visit inverness frequently, theres been a couple of times ive been the only one on the train. Cup of coffee and a book- smashing.
Do you think that the line has changed much in that time? Kishorn Port is somewhere i'd like to visit in the near future, apparently there are plans for it in the future with a big development but not sure on the details.
It’s a great beautiful rail journey that I have done twice both ways and I am glad I did not have to sit with a face mask that long like yourself. Brave guy !
Thank you for the memories, I did the very same journey a few years ago as part of a railrover ticket. This cost £130 at the time which allowed for 4 days of travel out of a 7 day period . We travelled from Carlisle to Edinburgh up to Thurso, back down to dingwall then onto the Kyle. From there to Inverness, then down the east coast to Dundee. From there it was home via Carlisle . A lot of travelling but definitely worth every penny.
Thanks NSD what a beautiful ride through your country side keep getting out n about for us peeps who can’t travel at present the scenery was super and yup I just pushed the button also what time of year would be good to know so it can be planned keep it going 🇦🇺
Great video with great scenery! A line which I think is underrated must be the Cumbrian Coast line from Carlisle to Lancaster. While the Settle to Carlisle line is indeed scenic,I do think it is overated compared to other routes. Once again great video!
Thank you for this Video, in the early '80s ( yes I know the exact date), my Bride and I travelled on this line as a part of our Honeymoon. Great reminder. We went on to later call our first Home "Kyle" which caused some confusion to some German Students we Hosted for a Summer Holiday as they assumed our Surname must be Kyle, they said no-one calls their home anything but the Family Name!
I took the train from Kyle to Inverstress and sat on the wrong side. A French couple sat opposite me, where the views were and started snogging. I have two hours of railway cuttings. Be good... Go Kyle...😊
It's just a different route, love both of them. I knew someone who said that the West Highland route was rubbish. That's so untrue, I told him that he ought to be thoroughly ashamed of himself for saying that. The two lines are totally different. From a new subscriber. 🙂
I have been on the West Highland line at least 5 times. We are all entitled to our opinions and to me having journeyed the Kyle line once there is no comparison. There is no part of the Kyle line that can match so many parts of the West Highland line. I enjoyed my day on the Kyle but no it doesn't start to compare to the West Highland line.
...beautiful trip, thank you for sharing, is sad to think the authorities wanted to close the line but great to see public pressure prevailed exact same situation in my neck of the woods here in Ipswich the then BR wanted to close completely the East Suffolk line to Lowestoft. Just wondered if Network Rail had considered a D.C third rail electrification programme for your beautiful line without the ugly masts spoiling the countryside as on other A.C routes? 👌
When we came to Kyle there was us and a family with wee kids who had a great time using the carridge as a jungle gym..... good trip. But coming to Skye by train, how did we leave? Lost in the mists of memory. Maybe that was the time we had a railpass?
Nice! I do plan to do a few trips to Skye in the future, so am looking for tip from locals on things to do and see that maybe are off the beaten path. 😊

Honestly you could walk it over the bridge the station really isn't far from Skye at all or take the bus all the way to Portree but the wee shuttle ferry is also there. what you all didn't see is that took a train to & from inverness from Aberdeen before and after this train ride and still had 5 hours to explore before the train home so I wasn't even on the first or the last trains of the day, really does make a great day out this route, would recommend to anyone.

Why your Railway runs empty couches? This I have seen in Australia too. When I applied for booking Sydney to Canberra, they showed waiting list- 1,2 . The other day it was confirmed. Than I reached train almost all the coaches were empty. Hardly 10 to 14 Passengers in each coach. Some were totally empty. Why not they reduce couches instead of long 10 to 15 coaches train. This will be economical.
