  • As winter tightens its grip upon the French Alps, Mateusz Piesiak and I head out on a long and hard hike through the magical scenery of Chamonix. With conditions rapidly changing, we must face the elements and balance the pursuit of photos with safety. Tune in for a scenic wildlife photography hike, ended off with a magical meeting in the magnificent winter woods of the French Alps.
The species I photograph in this video are the bullfinch and the Alpine chamois.

Another amazing vlog! Thanks for taking the extra risk and effort to take us along. Excellent editing and narration too!
(I have to admit I was relieved to see you both make wise decisions at the end).

"The images don't come easy" - and this is why people will pay YOU for your prints and you're doing great things. Fantastic work

Thank you Tobias for this video in which tells the limits of how far we should not go - to get that one great shot. It is never worth the risk.

Glad you exercised good judgment in getting off the mountain, even where you were looked sketchy, avalanche territory. Good video!

Thank you for sharing those beautiful snowy pictures. I watched the video twice ! I use to hike in the French Pyrénées during summer (I've never done it in winter yet) and sometimes I come across some isards, it's always such an incredible moment. Last summer I saw for the first time a wallcreeper, it was a very fast encounter but so amazing ! Can't wait till your next video...

Very nice. I love atmospheric photos that are taken in adverse weather conditions. Sure, they may not be pristine as shots taken in great light but they illustrate nature in true life. Also, those shots are more memorable. I remember a Morton Hilmer video in which explained why he included a photo that showed a partial and obscured raven in bottom left corner of whiteness in his calendar. If I remember correctly, he was in Greenland sheltering in his little tent for three days of an extreme blizzard. It was the only photo he was able to take during those days. He included in the calendar because it meant a lot to him. Knowing that story, it is an awesome photo. I have the calendar and love the photo.
I often go out in inclement weather to get shots of wildlife in rain, sleet even hail. It enables atmospheric shots that could not be obtained otherwise. Even rain soaked insects make great macro photography subjects. You can capture water drops on their antennae, wings etc., as well as the flowers they clean to. They often take shelter under leaves and they tend to stay put since they don’t like to fly around in the rain. Often, when under the leaves sheltering, they cling to the leaf upside down, offering a different perspective and they are still have raindrops - just the right amount.

I totally agree - the wildest weather often creates the most interesting images!

Wonderful vlog with commendable narration. You really carried me along. Keep it up. I myself is a wildlife photographer and has been longing to explore Chamonix region. Would you be kind enough to give some idea on when to go, where exactly to go and if there is anyone whom you can recommend to guide me. Thank you once again.

Thanks a lot for your kind words! Unfortunately, I know very little about the Chamonix region. I was tipped by Michel Doultremont to head towards lac Blanc, so we followed the trail up towards that lake. But as you saw, our hike was cut short. So I have little to no experience to help you with, unfortunately. But it was a beautiful place with spectacular views, so I hope you can get to experience it yourself!
