When I was first starting, I sharpened the heck out of everything. I didn't understand that this is one of the most powerful effects in PS. Fortunately, I had people I trusted explain it to me--but how I wish I would have had a tutorial like this! And for those just beginning...all the sharpening in the world won't make an out of focus photo in focus :)
Can't wait to try this. I have been getting a little discouraged lately because I see a lot of other photographers that are posting SUPER sharp photos and I'm just not really sure how they are doing it. But, I can tell it was an editing thing not necessarily a sharp raw photo. I'm gonna give this a try!
I'm new to your channel, & I've joined your Photoshop Cafe, I love your technique of teaching, you make it easy to understand & you don't talk to fast. Thank you for that. Thank you for this quick tutorial on sharpening.
Thank you for the easy to understand explanation of sharpening. I process with Lightroom and only a fraction in Photoshop. I'm trying to learn more about Photoshop and all its powerful tools. Appreciate all these tutorials!
That video was very helpful. I'll need to watch it a few more times and experiment until I feel really confident about what I'm doing. Thank you for this. I could have been struggling for a million years on my own!
Good refresher for me. Question - at what point do you do noise reduction - before or after sharpening? I some times see that the noise I thought I removed "comes back" after sharpening
Hi Colin. This was very helpful. I really liked how you used the mask to take some sharpening away from places you do not need it. I've been using LR basic sharpening slider. Can't wait to try this method. Thank you!
Thanks Colin, very informative and a memory jogger! What is your view on using "Shake Reduction" on photos? I know it is not sharpening as such but it appears to improve the clarity of the image. Thanks in advance.
Hi Colin. I understood the logic of hi-pass at overlay to carry on applying only texture of its own. However, am unclear of your masking NOT TO SHOW /remove the texture from hair (hence keep it to the entire image). I was assuming to enhance the texture at the hair and apparel and remove it from the scene. in nutshell invert mask to black and paint white to hair and apparel. Good if you can clarify as possible. Thanks.
That is helpful .. sometimes I got lost (which one is the best?) Well thank you Colin now is at least clear. Choosing it will be a struggle but at least I know in details. :)
I love Taylor Davis she is great. Always learn something here. Suggestion get rid of that weed sticking up in the lower left. Kinda draws your eye there. Keep'em coming.
@@photoshopcafe Yes - You made a copy go the b/g layer, then applied a high pass filter set at something like 8, - then created a layer mask that reviews all - then hid by painting black on the bit you want to "sharpen"... Surely this should have been inverted, then painted with white ?
Yea, You are very good at Photoshop, but I never feel comfortable to see a guy with a hat inside a room. Is he sick? Is he tired? Does he have hair problems? Is so cold inside that room?
@@photoshopcafe try a 6mm (1/4 inch) cut all around, which can be done by yourself. You will look great, a little on military side, certainly younger ;-). This will also have a lot of other benefits, including less contact with others.
Nice little refresher. Sometimes I forget all the things I'm supposed to know, but its covered too deep in other things.
Colin, you commentary was most helpful. I'll read with care again and use it.
Most grateful.

Really useful. So much in photoshop. Forgot all about high pass. Great prompt to avoid getting stuck in old ways and becoming complacent !
I usually do my sharpening in camera raw but this might be my new favorite way way to sharpen my photos
Nice job, Colin Smith. Greetings from Brazil

Main thing is a 4x5 aspect ratio

Great info. Thanks.
Thanks for this one, Colin. Nice to re-remember the things I learned waaay too long ago.
I have been waiting for your next tutorial. I enjoy your video's immensely!!
How does this compare to the sharpening filters in Luminar, Pixelmator, or iPhone?
Honestly. I don't know. Haven't used the other apps, Im a Photoshop/Lightroom guy
Very nice guide, careful not to sharpen to much! Thanks!
Well said
Hi, are you facing the same issue of brush cursor disappear while doing dodge and burn and do you have any solution
I haven't had that happen. But if that happens, try going to preferences and turn on Legacy Compositing
That is helpful .. sometimes I got lost (which one is the best?)
Well thank you Colin now is at least clear. Choosing it will be a struggle but at least I know in details. :)
Thanks man 🤙
I have seen this method before but not as easy to understand like Colin does it!
I geddit !! pretty guud aahll righhht liked & subscribed
Thank you, I never new how to use this!
Great sir...💪
I like the idea of using high pass s
I love Taylor Davis she is great. Always learn something here. Suggestion get rid of that weed sticking up in the lower left. Kinda draws your eye there. Keep'em coming.
or just use sharpening in camera raw and paint out e.g hair in the smart filter mask
In most of my photo i invert the mask and paint in the sharpness, it gives better control.
Yup, that works great
That high pass mask is surely the wrong way around... In this you were hiding the filter effect ?
john wheatley yes he did it because he didn’t want to sharpen the hair and fur.
Can you expand? Not sure what you are asking

I do beg your pardon - having re watched this..... I thought you wanted to sharpen the hair, as i would have done...... sorry, best regards..
Sorry but you said the image was in focus. If that is so, why sharpen it????

Really? weird. It's very common here
And I WAS having hair problems, since California was in full lockdown for Covid-19. I hadn't had a haircut in months.

Ok so there's no sharpening tool. Just a bunch of settings. Lol
hey good vid but ditch the hat!
Have you seen my quarantine hair?
Hey fair enough.. Your tutes are great.. keep up the good work 👍
