Having called Arizona my home state for the last 43 years, I am amazed at the memories this video brings back. Lived in Tucson and remember the bloody nose SP as it passed my home on the northeast side of town. Then moved to Phoenix and made the transition to Santa Fe. Had a girlfriend from Kingman and spent many hours watching the WarBonnets morph into the pumpkin BNSF logo as they passed that town. While my heart still belongs to Chicago & NorthWestern (formerly Minneapolis & St. Louis) from my childhood in Minnesota, these are some heart melting memories and I thank you for posting them.
This reminds me of when i was kid. my grandmother lived out in Tucson and my pops and I would go to the main line off I10 and watch SP freights and catch the Sunset limited fly by at 10pm. man this brings back memories lol . you even have shots of Cinega creek ! ! ! ! my dad and i got kicked out a few times for not having the right permits. Thanks for sharing ! ! !
The opening shot of the Sunset Limited departing reminded me of San Antonio back in the 80s when the Pooches (P30CH) was all the Sunset ran. Thanks for the great video and memory jog
I remember almost all of those locations, I sure miss a lot of those old colors that are no more! GREAT Video! Brought back many memories! Thank You for this!
Thank you! A great selection and also a great reminder of my time in Arizona in the 90s! I just wish I'd had video and not 35mm stills - though the sound of a motor drive brought back memories too!! I hope that one day the RRpicturearchive guys will give me an account so I can share my experiences.
The last days of a proud road. Stuck with 4 axle power where once only SD's ruled cuz that's all they could afford. Looks like a west bound at Dragoon at 7:21. Its all double track now with UP running stack trains every 5 minutes in both directions. I live in Cochise, and its great if you like the sound of multiple diesel locomotives all day and night, but if you don't, it's a living hell.
Awesome videos. I really appreciate it when all the video aren't shot at crossings where you generally just get incessant ding ding ding, and blaring horn drowning out the beautiful sound of those diesels. Thanks! A little horn is good though
I on the other hand loved shooting from the crossing, especially Amtrak. My mind goes back to the mid 1980s in San Antonio watching the east bound Sunset Limited depart the depot while hours earlier, catching the westbound Sunset Limited make his grand entry into the depot. Those were P30CH days then.
The scenery between Vail & Mescal, AZ is really nice, I rode the Sunset Limited East to New Orleans on 9/17/2012 when I went by Amtrak from Tucson, AZ to Wilmington, DE to go to my 40 year high school class reunion. Stayed overnight in New Orleans. The next day I rode the Crescent from New Orleans to Wilmington, DE. The train ride on both Amtrak trains was great, the scenery great-between Vail & Mescal, AZ just to the East of Tucson would make for a great N gauge or HO gauge model railroad layout. When I left Wilmington, DE I rode Amtraks Cardinal to Chicago, the scenery from Culpepper, VA to Ashlan, KY in the daytime hours is just great. I then caught Amtraks Texas Eagle to Dallas, TX in Chicago. Stayed the weekend in Dallas with my youngest son, then got the Texas Eagle to San Antonio & from San Antonio back to Tucson on the Sunset Limited(Thru coach from Chicago on the Texas Eagle) It would be very nice if the state of Arizona would partner with California, New Mexico & Texas, Amtrak & the Union Pacific Railroad & develop a Los Angeles-Palm Springs- Yuma-Phoenix-Tucson-Deming-El Paso corridor passenger train service & Amtrak make the Sunset Limited a daily train.
can hear the difference in SLR still cameras in the background. winding on with the older one and the beep beep of the autofocus and motor drive of the newer one. sounds exactly like my first autofocus Canon of the same era. Vale Santa Fe
Are you sure on the direction of the freight passing through Red Rock, I thought the water tank was on the north side of the tracks which would make that an east bound not west bound...
Someone told me at the last model railroad show that there were only four railroad companies left in the United States. They are CSX, BNSF, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern.
Be nice to see the Southern Pacific Daylight rebuilt Trio of E9A E9B E9A units with restored daylight passenger fleet cars of the 1940's matching come through Arizona in all these video locations
Ryan - Unless they also have been swallowed up in mergers, I think we still have Kansas City Southern Railroad and Florida East Coast Railway. Along with the big 4, these 6 are the only Class 1 railroads left in the US at this point I do believe. If someone has something different, please chime in. I know there are a host of small branch line railroads but they are usually something the regular Class 1's spun off. Unless something has happened with Amtrak as of recently in which it does not depend on the government for money, I do not really consider it a Class 1 railroad. It operates like a Class 1, but is not self sufficient financially like normal Class 1's are known for. If that day ever comes, then I would consider Amtrak a Class 1 railroad.
I went out to where the sabotage happened pretty cool stuff too bad the union pacific can't make up their mind about what there are going to do with that line

Amazing shot of Amtrak crossing the Tempe bridge. Too bad Amtrak cut its service to phoenix cause that'd be a great sight to see

I live in the Phoenix area and love seeing the older videos of the espee, Amtrak and the SF.

Nice videwo, Bill !! The Stormy is a fantastic locale to shoot trains!
i so miss the days when EMD ruled the rails
At 24:15, the 2nd loco is a UP heritage 1982 Mopac ?
Ahhhh I wish I was around back then to see SF
Same :(

12:14 someone put a Leslie on that Espee geep!
thank you so much for posting this, cheers !
super video, railroading in the 90s was great :-)

Have you seen Santa Fe’s Mojave Mainline - The Needles Subdivision?
Wow is that Tempe Town lake being built back then?
What about Santa Fe’s Mojave Mainline - The Needles Subdivision and Amtrak Across America from Pentrex along with America By Rail by Greg Scholl?
Why were there so many straight coaches and seemingly an extra sleeper on the Sunset? Run-through cars for the Eagle?
At 15:27 why was there a Burlington northern engine in arizona?
This was awesome!
Someone told me at the last model railroad show that there were only four railroad companies left in the United States. They are CSX, BNSF, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern.
There are 7 class 1 railroads in the US.

What kind of Amtrak unit was that with the three strobes on top of the cab?
P40DC Genesis locomotive.
Thanks!
+Blaine Bugaski No problem. They were the first of the Genesis fleet before the P42's.
12:15 WHOA !!!
Classic star brass 5 chime. Either that or a Tang Shang 5er.
Now that you mentioned it, I’m not sure if which 5 chime it is anymore since they all sound the same.
Now I'm curious? What would railroading in the west be like if Burlington Northern and Santa Fe never united?
Love those yellow and blue and war bonnet santa fe locos ! Do the yellow and blue 1s have a name??? Like the war bonnets r red and silver
The blue and yellow engines are called blue bonnets
@@CrazyKaboose gotcha. Good name for em
Phoenix has Amtrak service?
It used to go through

Back when wide cab 4 axles were actually a thing

I always loved the red, yellow and silver paint schemes on the Santa Fe. It's a shame they did away with it. Mergers suck.
