    The Owen Maerks is an interesting one. Hard to quantify it. Mutant glam? Something oddball but could've only come from the late 70s. Have you heard the Jack Ruby lp on Feeding Tube? Kind of reminds of that. Archival release and pretty out there proto-punk. Thanks for sharing the Olivia, don't believe I'm familiar with her. It's a good thing you continue to share the cheap heat. A lot of gold in there. Dark secret: I have zero Leo Kottke lps in the collection. I guess cause they are so common I never bring em home. I should have the first few at least. Graham Nash Songs For Beginners is a winner. Better than many records, pricey ones too. And certainly better than anything Stills or Crosby did. Though I do like the Crosby lp.

    • @bigstar1000
      @bigstar1000  2 дні тому

      You should grab some of those Kottke LPs, they are plentiful, cheap and very good quality-wise. Amen to Graham Nash! I'm kinda obsessed with Wild Tales, the follow up, at the moment.

    Alaways enjoy a new entry from you. Two things - first, I did buy the Luis Gasca LP on Blue Thumb Records. Thanks for the encouragement - the 'Fusion' description gave me pause, but there was no need for that. Second, I also picked up the Pep Llopis LP on Freedom To Spend that someone recommend you and in turn to all of us. Great find - love it.
    Back to on topic: Cheap Heat.
    Mantronix "In Full Effect" 5 USD
    Herbie Man "Stone Flute" 5 USD
    John Fahey "Christmas With .. Vol II" 5 USD
    Tuxed Moon "A Tousdand Lives In Picture" 7 USD
    Morton Subotnick "Axolotl / The Wild Beasts" 7 USD
    And lastlty, the big store in my area bought a massive ECM collection - hundreds of LPs. Most were near mint - meticulously care for. It was overwhelming - too many selections and they hadn't even put out the entire collection. Limited my selections as a consequence - too much to choose from - upgraded my copy of Charlie Haden/Carla Bley "The Ballad of the Fallen" and new to me, an outlier in their catalog, Hajo Weber / Ulrich Ingenbold "Winterreise". And yes, there were Walcot and Eberhardt Weber LPs...

    • @bigstar1000
      @bigstar1000  10 днів тому

      Nice picks on the Gasca and Pep Llopis. Nice ones indeed. The cheap heat list is always appreciated. I shall make a mental note as these are all artists I know and love. That ECM drop sounds super mouth watering. I would have loved to see that!

    Hello Fred.
    My girlfriend used to be in an amateur choral group who would mostly perform material similar to Sweet Honey In The Rock or light gospel stuff, but from time to time they would tackle some more off-kilter material. I remember them having a go at some Moondog pieces, but the best was Polegnala e Todora, as heard on the Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares album. To hear the discordant harmonies echoing around the auditorium was a special experience.
    I cant remember when I first heard this Bulgarian iso-polyphonic singing, but it must've been before the 4AD release. My Grandmother spent some time in Bulgaria in the 70s, and brought back all kinds of records...Mostly produced by the state broadcasting record label.
    Recently I've become obsessed with recordings of the a cappella human voice in all its myriad of styles from across the world. As the earliest form of communication and music, I feel you are venturing into the soul of mankind...If I can say that without sounding like a complete wanker.
    It's thought the Bulgarian/Balkan/Greek-Albanian/Thracian vocal style of singing is very ancient, perhaps dating back to the time of Alexander the Great. Whatever the truth, there does seem to be something primal in the harmonies and uniquely female. It's funny that you called the music spiritual, as in lyrical content it's quite the opposite. Can you imagine the Bulgarian communist state allowing the performing of religious material outside the state sanctioned Orthodox churches? It's interesting that social songs work and relationships should sound spiritual, when in reality it's a far more grounded and earthy music.
    One day I mean to make a video covering the records I have featuring a cappella singing, but I worry about presenting the music without wankery creeping in. One day.
    Cheers - Hedley

      @bigstar1000  10 днів тому

      What a great comment. Hard to know where to start to reply, but I would say that you don't have to worry about any sort of wankery relating to showing a cappella LPs. I think there is definitely a place for those in the VC. Those in the know will appreciate. It's also very cool that your grandma spent time in Bulgaria and accessed those wonderful records.

    Cool to see some electronic records; as a huge fan of Roxy Music, I know that Phil Manzanera Diamond Head album pretty well. I believe all the members of Roxy appear on that album(with the exception of Ferry). This album was my introduction to Robert Wyatt. I'm sure you know the 801 Live album (I believe we spoke of it once) but i love the version of these Manzanera songs on that record. I'm curious about the Ryuichi Sakamoto record; that's an album i had never heard. So I will lbe ooking into it. Sakamoto's discography is so deep that I always get a little overwhelmed trying to find the next step. Always enjoy your videos very much. Merci. Shawn

    Fred, Wendy Carlos was born here, in Rhode Island. The city of Pawtucket, where she was born and raised , is famous for the Slater Mill. That textile factory was the first water-powered cotton spinning mill in America. The Industrial Revolution started in Great Britain, and Samuel Slater, an immigrant from England built and designed the machinery. The machines were so easy to operate, the mill employed children that were only seven years old. I know what William Blake meant when he described England's '' Dark, Satanic Mills''. When I drive along the river and look at the abandoned mill ( it's now a museum site), I get a negative ''vibe''. Wendy must have felt this same feeling, she did not like the ''commercial use'' of drum machines, she said ,"they sound like something you would hear in a factory, a fascist beat'' My friend, Gerry, was the guy who finally had Wendy inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall Of Fame! I'm working with Gerry to induct Alvin Curran next, he was born and raised in Providence, R.I., and studied music at Brown University, as did Wendy. I bought the live Roxy Music album, ''Viva Roxy Music'' when I was 14 years old and fortunately, not working at Slater Mill. I only knew the song, '' Love Is The Drug'' from ''Siren'' but that photograph of the woman on the cover ''turned me on'' so I grabbed that one, I think the woman with Ferry is background singer Jacquie Sullivan. Manzanera is Roxy Music's Most Valuable Player, but of course all the members are top-notch, gifted musicians. In terms of production, musicianship and songwriting, the '' Avalon'' album is the 1980's most influential recording, comparable to ''Dark Side Of The Moon'' from the 1970's. Miles Davis said that Hermeto Pascoal was ''the most impressive musician in the world''. Your tee- shirt made me think of that remark by Miles.

    • @bigstar1000
      @bigstar1000  10 днів тому +1

      Wonderful insights as per usual Michael! I hope you get Alvin Curran inducted, he is more than deserving. What a great minimalist composer he is. Agree on Manzanera, although Ferry has much to do with the sonic identity of RM.

      @@bigstar1000 Fred, another interesting fact, Moses Brown owned and funded the Slater Mill and went on to establish Brown University, the college that the two composers attended. Bryan Ferry is the ''Vision'' behind Roxy Music and Phil Manzanera helped Ferry's ''vision'' become a reality!

There was also a US Nonesuch reissue around the same time as the 4AD, should also be fairly common. Whatever pressing, essential stuff! Never seen that Eberhard Weber before but likewise I'll grab anything with him (if I can afford). Unique.
