    Wow, the Rother show sounded incredible and indeed as close as you could come to seeing the real thing. If the tour hits the US I will be looking to hit that for sure. Great run of records here Fred. Glad to have L'universe Solitude myself and yes it navigates a special world between jazz, avant-garde and modern classical. I added a few to my w/l, especially the Louiss / Capon / Humain but I'm taking a buying break for a while so will seek that out another time. Lovely stuff

    Great to here your recent Neu experience. Their first album is incredible. I bought a 2014 repress of Tago Mago yesterday which I was dubious of, but the pressing is excellent. Going down a huge Jaki Leibezeit rabbit hole. As always, incredible selection of records, always has me darting off to UA-cam after watching you videos.

      Jaki Liebezeit is worthy of a rabbit hole style dive. I would highly recommend his album with Jah Wobble and Holger Czukay- Full Circle, esp. the track How Much Are They? A masterpiece IMHO. Thanks for stopping by!

    Hey Fred, Good to catch up. So much as always.....That Gary Burton would be in my 'Gimme 25' of ECMs if one were to make one. 🙂Oh yes, 'Incantations'...I remember buying the CD in Flagstaff, AZ and listening to it coming down the mountain through fog and low-hanging clouds...unforgettable! Especially interested in that Vangelis-like piece. Thanks as always. -Carm

    Record collecting questions:
    as someone new to record collecting would be interesting to hear about;
    - How you've set up your sound system for best sound / stylus, amp etc (unless its some ridiculous 20k set up lol)
    - Finances; how do you keep things from spiralling out of control, while having a constantly growing record collection, especially since in Australia it appears the average price for new record is now $70 when only a few years ago it was $40-$50.

    With classical you can't really go wrong as it is plentiful and cheap so people who are interested have plenty too explore and can pick up.
    Love the mariano a classic don't have the karolak but know it well like you said very groovy and jazzy alot of that eastern bloc stuff just have a unique but familiar feel I just enjoy alot.
    That capon has been on my wl forever..lol..I have found several copies of his lp with christian escode here funny enough also an excellent lp.
    I know you like the double bass stuff I do too and have some interesting ones in my collection will have to go through and revisit some of them.
    That is my favorite ornette lp personally..
    Agree with brackeen 💯.
    The carvin is cheap 🔥 classic or it was have not looked it up in awhile..😂.
    Neu what more can you say there 💖.
    That music was so forward sounding it sounds like a contemporary band.
    Look forward to your personal thoughts on collecting brother.

    The Rita Marie album is a real gem in my eyes. I agree with you in that it is not an easy album to compartmentalize. Definite Brazilian folk elements in there but takes so many diversions making it a disorientating yet cohesive listen. Have to admit I'm a little bit green with envy that you saw Michael Rother as I would just love to see him live.

    Hey, Fred. Thanks for the valuable exposure and recommendations. I listened to everything and agree with you about Joanne Brackeen. I almost picked up "Aft" but the last track fell short for me (whole step Maj 7 progressions did not keep up with the rest of the excellent compositions). That recording in particular is has an impressive groove with no drummer. Being underrated may have something to do with not having a top producer available to showcase her prodigious talent. Well, she's not done yet so I'm hoping for a new release.

    • @bigstar1000

    Even though I am far from wealthy (but working on it) the mystique of vinyl and high end audio makes the impression that it's mainly for the elite. Half-million dollar systems, rooms full of stuffed shelves, it just screams "excess". However, for people like me who have a heavily curated, relatively modest collection - maybe 100 vinyls, 250 CDs - and a carefully selected reproduction system - Sonos (wireless) with homemade adapters, reasonably nice cartridge and low-midrange turntable and CD player used as a transport - I consider owning my music on physical media important for cultural education and contemplation, plus bestowing healing properties on the home listener. I have a wonderful, long decorated room for listening where the rough edges and artifacts of the audio system are absorbed and smoothed out. I'm content. I am wondering if we should start a service to donate vinyl or other media and possibly equipment as a social service, for the benefits I described. Has that ever been proposed?

    • @bigstar1000
      @bigstar1000  7 місяців тому +1

      I'm not sure it has ever been proposed but to be honest it would hardly classify as a real need if we talk basic human resources. We're just fortunate to be able to spin records,Most people in need are just trying to get by and I don't think putting a record on a turntable figures in their day to day. I might be wrong.

    Fred, one of my most cherished piano trios is Kagel's ''Trio in drei Satzen'' written in 1985. As with any Kagel piece, ''things are not what they seem''. In Sanskrit, ''Gyan'' means ''knowledge''. Nice that you saw both Rother and Gyan Riley in a live setting. Arooj Aftab is a new name for me, gotta check her out. I've been re-visiting my deluxe version of ''Hergest Ridge'', another classic from Mike Oldfield. One of my favorite double- bass players was the late, Peter Kowald from Germany. I saw him perform live twice. He could perform solo sets or jam with people from all- over the world.

    Great stuff Fred. As usual, nearly all of those records are out of my wheelhouse, which makes for a great watch (for me).
    As far as a video you might do about your collecting habits, if I recall correctly you don't move on from records you bring home. If this is the case, do you have a limited amount of space you give to your records?
    You seem like a very thoughtful person, so it'd be interesting to hear if you have any thoughts on your own record collecting habits and your impact on the environment. As individuals, of course, we are grains of sand on the beach of environmental impact, but does this ever play into your thought process? Does the production of more plastic products give you pause? For me, I do try to limit record and CD purchases to mostly used items rather than encouraging the constant manufacture of new items. Of course, I acknowledge that the effect I personally am having on the environment in this case is next to nil, so I don't know why I focus on this, but as a record collector I'm already a weirdo.
    /ramble off

    Great Fred🌟I like the idea of doing an item on music album collecting. Hobby or obsession? As a music collector since the end of the 1990s with peaks and troughs in cd collecting over the years (post-punk, punk, indie rock/pop, avant garde, some classical and of late more prog and krautrock) I am feeling that I have entered the obsessive stage. A point of no return or limit. That is, just when I decide enough is enough or I should enjoy what I have, new music pops up or doors to new music open. It’s crazy. And I am running out of space…..
    So what are we doing to ourselves as music collectors? When I had a smaller collection I listened to albums and certain artists much more than I do these day. The music of the ole days is more memorable than that of my current big collection. And album collecting takes a chunk out of life when there is so much more to do, like enjoying the outdoors and traveling.
    Hence, as a First World challenge, should we set limits to how much we collect or take a more critical approach to what we collect? Also reducing the risk that too many albums dilute the truly great stuff. Isn’t less more?
    As a cd collector I have also become fascinated by the phenomenon of vinyl collecting (first pressings, labels, sound quality etc). Not so much of an issue for cd album collectors, who appear to have most appreciation of the music instead of the form; whilst vinyl album art is to be appreciated. Would love to hear your thoughts on this, knowing that you appreciate both formats. Strangely, I don’t no of a cd community next to a VC one, or should we have a music appreciation community😉😆 Hi MAC🌟
    Cheers🌟

      Hi, I agree, what is the philosophy of a collection is an interesting question that has many implications including lateral issues such as "do you prefer first pressings to reissues and why" or "how much are you willing to spend on vinyl".
      Other questions, “Does it make sense to be a completionist?” (I hope this is how it is said in English: someone who wants everything from a specific artist, in italian 'completista'); “Do you play all the vinyl you buy?”; "Does it make sense to be obsessed with the condition of the vinyl and the cover?".
      Finally, what will happen to my collection is a question I often think about and I still don't have an answer. Ciao!@@bigstar1000
