You must be the only person on the planet willing to make a video featuring Bruce Cockburn and Michael Franks. 🙂 Some true classics here, that you know I love. Great vid man!!
Probably, and I will make them cool, which anyone with taste would agree on. Cockburn despite his unfortunate name, made some beautiful folky opuses, and Michael Franks, well, underestimated genius. Hope you're well, and thanks for stopping by man!
My friend, this video made me smile from ear to ear. This is the first video where I could say that I have that in my collection. Michael Franks reminds me of my late mother. We went to see him live a very long time ago. He gave her his autograph. I love the Roches. I don't see them talked about a lot in the VC. I wish I could find that Stevie Wonder album. I've always wanted to own it. So many great artists in this video. I hope you do another one like this. This was gold my friend.
Oh I'm so glad this hit the spot. The podcast I'm talking about would suit your needs down to a T then. Lovely story about your mum. Very touching indeed. That Stevie is widely available, you'll find. Thanks again!
Pure class Fred - I have so many of these and share your enthusiasm for them too - the JJ Cale first 7 albums, EW&F All'n All (my introduction to soul/funk/jazz), the Steve Winwood albums - I could go on and on - credibility rating maximised in my eyes - collecting records is not elitist - so much to discover for those on small budgets (as I discovered when my daughters started digging) - excellent video - John and I should be dropping our next this weekend
I felt this video would appeal to you especially. I remember we discussed Winwood recently, and in every one of your videos there is always cheap heat to be seen. Thanks Mark!
Hi Fred Picked up the Deodato record on my Japan (Kyoto) trip recently. The Capaldi record came into my shop recently (before I Closed) gave it a listen and had to Keep it. Great Video.
Really good selection, Fred. Frankly, I had never heard of that Graham Nash solo record you mentioned, so thanks for the education 🙂I am constantly on the lookout for Joni Mitchell's stuff, though I note that certain albums like f.i. Blue or Ladies of the Canyon that used to be in the dollar bin a couple of years ago, and because of the hype surrounding them (merci la vc) are now sold at higher prices. Bruce Cockburn & Loudon Wainwright are now on my wantlist 🙂I know every nook and cranny of Santana's first album as I must have listened to it over a hundred times on my walkman when I was 13y old. Brilliant one, indeed.
The Graham Nash LP is INCREDIBLE. You should track it down, for your taste base, this is a MUST. I know I shouldn't say this, but I really think this is a record you would love.
You made my day with this as I have quite a few of these records and indeed a lot of them I picked up in what we in the UK call charity shops (your thrift shop I guess). It particularly warmed the cockles of my heart to hear shout outs to The Roches, Bruce Cockburn and Jane Siberry who in any universe that made sense would be so much better known. As for not being "cool" I've often thought that word can limit your aural (or other) palette by closing of your mind to other sounds and discoveries. If something touches you, connects with you then the label is irrelevant.
Hey Phil, glad this video was well received and that we share love for acts such as the Roches or Bruce Cockburn. Very easily dismissed but musically very solid.
Good selection..Acording to me Robert Palmer is underrated, the Robert's 70's discography is fantastic. And the video shows us another side of your vinysl collection. Merci beaucoup.
Hi Fred So many great pulls in this video: Pentangle, The Roches, Secret Life of Plants, and Caravanserai all blew me away, when I either discovered them unwittingly, or finally tracked them down. Especially the Stevie Wonder record. I got pretty engrossed in that for a while. Take care Kevin
Hey Fred, Great inspiration here. 🙂If I were to make an all-time top 10, 'Icarus' would be in there. I like The Roches very much. Lovely Jane Siberry as well. This has to be among my favorite videos of yours, also a nice reminder to keep one's eyes peeled for the gems in plain sight. Thanks as ever. -Carm
I am with you on this! I have many of those records you presented. I have an eclectic taste in music with a lot of special and non-mainstream records in my collection but like finding stuff like this too. I picked up many of those that you have over the years and for very cheap. For example, the BS&T album I paid 1 USD for it when I lived near Detroit (where I grew up), then living in smaller city in Finland for years there was a great indoor flea market in the 2000s where many people were selling off records. I bought many records for 1 or 2 Euro. Many turned out to be favorite records of mine or by bands I would normally not search for or take a chance on or ones I dismissed! In just the last couple of years (now in Denmark) I found a couple of nice finds for very cheap from bargain bins. A couple of early 70s LPs. One LP on RCA by the band Sky (the US band Sky that did one album and then I realized later the leader/founder of the band was the guy who started the Knack). Then an LP by the band Matrix on Rare Earth records which was a one off consisting of some Motown session musicians. Both good albums! It is fun to find stuff like this!
I too recently got the blood sweat tears record for $5, and a rundgren Ballad of runt cd for a dollar. Also the 1st Rufus lp and the great Robert Palmer Clues super cheap. Wish everything i wanted was so affordable!!
Fred, thanks for the great video which is definitely not uncool...you hit on probably one of my favorite topics...cheap, slept on, "uncool" records. I just picked up sleeping Gypsy by Michael Franks it's fantastic ...got some Brazilian flourishes... subtle but super cool(discovered from a sample from a kind of plunderphonics best guy from my area - Funkmammoth...check him out, so fun.) I'm a devotee of Arc of a Diver as well. So please indulge me a couple favorites....the two Roland Prince records Free Spirit and color visions. Jimmy spheeris - Isle of view (big influence on a really great indie folk record by Midlake...The Trial of Van Occupanther) Bohannon - Too Hot to Hold....and just a couple more...my quintessential cheap heat James Talley - got no bread no milk and no money..... it's western swing and it's just perfect. Perhaps most controversial I love Rosanne Cash - Seven year ache. Synthified 80s country...yes please. Rambling....I'll shut it down. I did find a cheap copy of that kip hanrahan record you talked about a few videos ago....I'm not feeling it yet man...😁 I'll give it some more time. Keep doing God's work.
I would most certainly snap up Sleeping Gypsy too. Lovely record. I have Roland Prince's Free Spirit (bought 15 years back but forgotten in the jungle of the shelves). The other one I don't have. I've been meaning to check out the Jimmy Spheeris LP. Sorry you're not into Kip. He's certainly an acquired taste. Which one is it? Thanks for the great and thoughtful comment!
Desire develops an edge. No need to apologize lol. I've got a box of Fred records and you've introduced me to some all time favorites (dadawah comes immediately to mind...mildlife...killer) I actually spun a side last night. It could grow on me. thanks for the intro to that podcast. That spheeris was their first episode. Had Bohannon in there too. I'm mostly listening to the Bark Psychosis represses lately. Kind of obsessed. Your topic was a hit.
Fred, everybody has masturbated at least once in their lifetime and enjoyed the ''guilty pleasure'' it brought them. The majority of people do not talk about that experience , but of course they love to tell stories about having sex with other partners. Some music lovers spend their lives looking for that elusive record, while other music fans enjoy the treasures that are easily attainable. These two approaches are equally acceptable in my worldview- ''One man's meat is another man's poison''. I love Derek Bailey and Elton John, so that puts me in my own universe- all meat, no poison! Yes, Michael Franks is a great mix of Paul Simon and Steely Dan. Yoko Ono's 1973 album, '' Feeling The Space'' is a fantastic album, filled with humor, it's a tribute and a parody of the Feminist Movement. I have spent many hours trying to understand why the music of Steve Miller is so intoxicating to me. Miller's songs remind me of Chuck Berry tunes with an added flavor that I cannot describe. I'd rather fly like an eagle than stay on the ground with the turkeys.
This is what I love about your comments Michael, it's the mix of surrealistic, candid and enlightened. I'm glad we're on the same page with Yoko, Steve Miller, Michael Franks et al. Thanks for your thoughts!
a really enjoyable video! the roches lp was part of a trilogy that Fripp envisioned; his Exposure, the roches debut (featured here) and i believe the first daryll hall solo effort. I have most of these LP's that you showed, but there were a few that i see everywhere that will be added to the collection (bruce cockburn). credibility is overrated!
Wild Tales' Graham Nash is my personnal favorite and a cheapo as well. All killer no filler. Stumbled upon one of the steve winwood you talked about during a street market session and didn't acquired, seller wanted 15€ for it. Go figure.
Thanks for the video. Loved it and the concept. Some records I can actually afford for once! Even in Australia. I've been inspired to add a similar kind of theme into my fb group, which is quite unrelated (hip hop cd collectors) but spreading knowledge of cheap, common but amazing albums is something everyone seems to want right now.
Hey Aussie watcher, thanks for the reply. Records here are stupidly priced these days so it's nice to know you can still score beautiful music for cheap. Where are you based if I may ask?
Sneaking Sally was my intro to Palmer. That three song trilogy Sailing/Julia/Sneaking is so good. You mentioned funky. Plenty of that there. I never expected you to show Steve Miller. You mentioned losing credibility by showing some of these. You got it all wrong Fred. Pulling out albums like this this will only boost your credibility. Although. It would be boosted even more if you showed some Morrissey or The Smiths. {smile} Have a great weekend~ Rob/Boston It was great to see Kevin {DocStrangelyStrange} comment. I also heard from him via comment on my last video.
The losing credibility comment was obviously tongue-in-cheek, because I quite frankly don't care what people will think. I'm just happy to share records. It's great that Kevin has re-appeared indeed!
