He thinks he owns the place, may live nearby, like it’s his backyard. May have been a school teacher or dean. All it takes is one, and there is always one. I fly 2.5 and 3 in. quads, fpv. They are so small you may hear them but don’t see it. All under 250g, and never over anyone’s head.

@@CustomFPV We tried this method with other hobbies I am involved with, hot-rodding, shooting sports, off road MC... it failed there, you are nice, give them some room, and they take it, then come for more. From your age group, you are at a disadvantage dealing with geezers-with-power. Those geezers among us (like me) can back them down, and send them packing with their tail between their legs. I would've liked to have seen him tell that guy that he's too busy to bother with his concerns about the imaginery kids that were playing soccer there.
Some people are so miserable that no one else around them can enjoy themselves without it annoying them, you’re an actual rc pilot who knows way more about this stuff than that guy, he has no humbleness
People that know the least about some activity (RC, FPV, guns, cars, whatever) are the ones that complain the most about it - and make rules to regulate it. "I can't do that safely, so obviously no one else can."
"Hey that guy looks like he's having fun and is harming no one, better go over and tell him it's illegal since my neighbors best friend was told it was illegal by her babysitter" "Wait he actually called me out and knows more than I do..... I better tell him you have to get a permit too since that sounds like it might be right. Shit he called me out again, I can't just walk away and admit defeat.... I know! I'll compliment the streamer on the back of the plane and fane interest so I can sulk back and go home to a wife that loathes every word I speak. You know what, I'm gonna tell her I go into an argument with an illegal drone flyer and he cried before leaving, then everyone clapped. Yea I'll tell that to my wife!"
Gotta love when the "do gooders" always interfere with a UAS Pilot while flying...SUPER SAFE!!! If there were a problem, they should be waiting for you to land safely. This is such a pet peeve of mine. Glad you dealt with it so well!
Hey Brian! first off, big fan of yours and longtime sub, keep up the good content! And next, yeah! I 100% agree! I’m used to holding conversations while flying so it didn’t really stand out to me but It really would have been nice if he gave me space until I was done. Thanks for the commend!
Well I gotta say, you handled that way better than I probably would have. Not only were you 100% correct, you didn't feel the need to prove that to him or put him in his place, which would have been totally justified if you did, but probably would have led to him being bitter, and done nothing positive for relations between RC pilots and the public. You handled that with grace and professionalism, you're are an asset to our hobby sir, cheers!
Flying at my AMA club site, a few years ago, and had a guy pull in the parking lot, got out, walk up behind me and started yelling "crash", several times. Was Flying my 33% edge 540 which probably had more $ into it than his pos car he was driving. I terseley told him to go back to the parking area,, clearly marked with signs stating " no spectators beyond this point "! I landed and shut down, approached this guy, he was lost and wanted directions! I knew where he wanted to go, I sent him on a wild goose chase instead!😅
Your story reminded me of my dad, we lived in a spot that must have been convenient for people stop and ask directions. The first thing he would always say to someone seeking directions "Oh you cant get there from here" lol. The looks on their faces was hilarious.
@Guy Number 1 This is why I only fly quads with GPS, they can hold their position. A plane can stall if its not moving and if you move your eyes from a moving plane, who knows what could happen? It could rise too high then stall. Fly towards the wrong direction (a powerline, tree, person, a dumb bird lol) I kinda want to fly a plane, but also kinda nervous.
@Guy Number 1 Same in the UK, you have to have a spotter (might just be for flying fpv though), I honestly think if you are flying safely and away from people then why does it matter, especially if you know that there is no one around and that no one can get hurt, expecially with the batteries that racing drones and such have, you're not going to be up for long.
@Guy Number 1 That doesn’t apply to RC models under .55 lbs. What you are referring to is craft that falls under the Part 107 rules between .55 and 55 lbs. The rules were designed to protect the hobby flying community.
@@anthonyb5279 oh right, I thought the laws were very similar but I don't pay too much attention to the US laws. Here in the UK you can fly visual line of sight without a spotter but if you want to do fpv then you need a spotter. So you are allowed to fly something like a DJI drone on your own as long as you can see it, but with an fpv drone then you need a spotter which doesn't make much sense to me because fpv drone pilots tend to spend time in the simulator and are generally much more skilled pilots than the likes of someone who just picked up a DJI drone because they though it was cool and took it to the park or something. Also pilots of these camera type drones like the DJI ones are more likely to fly it somewhere they shouldn't like over a crowd of people or in a city centre compared to fpv quads where you generally want to keep away from other people when you are flying. If they are going to have laws like this then I think they should at least have a way for a pilot to take a test or something to be allowed to fly with goggles on alone.
"I understand his concern for the safety of all the occupants of the park" The safety of others in these cases is nothing but a tool they use to justify their own nosiness
Exactly! & that goes double & even triple for the faa/ gov. Those are te facts. Anyone can disagree. The devil has many advocates. They can manipulate , write & rewrite history, but anyone who has even just a lick of sense who was paying attention & who is aware of gov & propoganda, knows the reality which is; gov didn't like citizens to have the power to view & record so much. There were a couple of incidents that really set off gov feeling the need to control personal drones. They set out to gain that control by fear tactics. Msm started doing reports on manned aircrafts being in danger (which there had never been any damage). They also did reports of citizens who were afraid drone operators were using drones for "peeping tom" purposes (again, propoganda. Google earth/ maps hasset the standards for no expectation of privacy even in our yards. Fact is drone operators caught a huge corporate hog farm illegal dumping waste directly into a waterway. Corporate owned politicians camt have that. Other situation happened during a protest. Police blocked off an area where they took detained citizens. This place was out of view of citizens including journalist. A reporter flew a drone over the barrier & recorded police . They didn't like that & eventually shot it down with a shot gun. Our gov does nothing for our safety. They take away our freedoms in the name of safety, but it's bs. If they cared about our safety they would give us healthcare we pay for and they'd stop pharma from gouging us.

I used to fly at a county park and got stopped by a park ranger. The director agreed and I continued to fly there. Many moons and years ago, I think it was early eighties, when I lived in London UK, I was flying a large ww1 bi-stormer, a 6' span fabric covered bi-plane in Wormwood Scrubs in London. I was flying fairly high, perhaps 5-600 feet when from the corner of my eye I spotted flashing blue lights; the cop had to walk all the way to the center of the field where I was flying from and he said 'Hello mate, can you bring that plane down'; I asked 'why?' and he says 'your plane is visible on the Heathrow Airport radar and they are complaining'. Back in the day cops were not aggressive at all. I brought the plane down and the cop said his byes and left. The next day and the day after and all, I was back at the same field flying again and kept my flying height to under 400'. That was a fun day.
This guy reminds me of a majority of the AMA members.... more kids would fly at more chartered-club fields if the old timers didn't ruin everyone else's fun.
This is ABSOLUTLEY true. Your comment is spot on. I watch it all the time where I fly in Sacramento. They hate sport flyers, as allot of racing happens at my local club, official, and non-official. The Club members DRIVE away young people all the time. They seem to cast down extreme hate, instead of trying to help, or foster a new member. Then they complain about how membership numbers are dropping. The entire Club Board, top to bottom seems to loathe sport/young flyers. I am 57, and I enjoy helping new flyers, watching someone make progress, and begin to enjoy the Hobby. The very beginning is discouraging, and its where many newcomers walk away. Couple of crashes, and done. Back to video games...
@@willstevens4981 It took me bit to find some good people at my Club, but I did. I liked flying alone in the beginning, but now it's not the same without my friends, so I rarely go now if at least one friend isn't going to be there. It's really become a social thing now. Plus, I think it's just safer to fly at an actual AMA site.
I just treat the "fun police" like they are invisible, and inaudible. Totally ignore them, and let them dribble on with their "expert interpretation" of the laws.
I’ve gotta say, you did a nice job handling that “park patrol” guy. No voices were raised, you were calm, respectful and courteous with him. While I haven’t flown in years (2 young kids taking all my time), the hobby sure has changed over the years..
I just don’t understand what the problem with flying small RC planes in a park is these days. It seems 50years ago people were doing this without an issue and that was when planes had to be bigger, gas powered and far far more prone to radio signal loss. And now it’s too dangerous? How many people are actually injure from rc planes these days… is it really a risk at all? People really are getting dumber and more selfish.
I get the notion that there are just Karens and Kevins that just cannot stand for others to be happy. So they stick their noses where they are not wanted or welcomed. I had the same problem as I am a CL flyer (control line) my planes are Cox Vintage and they come up and whine about the noise, or that I might lose the plane and hit someone. It's a forested area with CLEAR cones that designate the flight radius of a control line and they just plain step in the radius and damn near get hit. It's good to see young people flying and keeping the RC/CL and flying/racing hobby alive and well! At least he isn't glued to a console or PC 24/7 burning Cheeto dust and Mountain Dew stains.
The old guy knew he was intimidating the young man. Notice how quickly he changed the subject when he knew he was in the wrong and also spouting crap. The old man should be fined for interfering with a PIC legally flying. Interfering a PIC on mission has to stop or someone will get hurt. It's already happened. He should be chasing people who don't scoop up dog poop.
I know a rule as a training pilot myself, is no closer than 500 ft to any person, vehicle, vessel or settlement. So surely, as long as you’re not flying above 500ft, I’d like to imagine you’d be okay. Also it’s not like youd purposely fly that thing into an aircraft if one was to go by 😂😂😂

I try to be as subtle as you were here, but I am 57, and don't do have that ability much anymore. I think he is in his 70's. He comes to the field every day, sits down at a bench, almost forgot, HIS bench, and falls asleep. You could light of a NUKE under is chair with no response. Soon as something out of the ordinary occurs, he is right there. I made an AMA card you can read from space because of the dude. I copied it at like 300%. I got some serious laughs from it... Is that Dublin Ca. I see on his hat? I am in Sacramento. Never forget, there is ALWAYS an expert nearby!! VR
Nicely handled, but I just wish that people would research their facts before approaching someone and telling them they can't do something! It just makes them look a little dumb and a bit of a 'Karen'. But well done for explaining and educating him in a respectful way. He seems like a nice guy.
You should never have told him you were a certified drone pilot. It is your right to fly in a park, as you explained, regardless of whether you are certified or not. You should have left it at that. Now he's going to walk away thinking it's ok for you to fly because you are certified, instead of understanding that there is no law stating that you aren't allowed to fly there. Now he's going to think he's won the argument. You should have explained the regulations and told him to go away, and stop bothering you.
This guy may actually like your planes, it’s just that some people in the city may have shared their concerns with him, so he just had to talk to you. In my town, people always complain to the principal, but he doesn’t mind my flying)
Yeah, he seemed respectful, and I understand his concerns, but nowhere in the ordinances did i see anything about laws against drones or planes so if he is making something up (not saying he is) to get me to leave, that’s disheartening.
Not only is a 107 NOT required for recreational flight, but there is no licensing or permitting requirements to fly in that airspace. He most likely misunderstood the requirements and the purpose of the encounter was initiated out of ignorance. No harm, no foul. But he took nothing away from that encounter, either, and is still not properly educated on the subject.
Very true. In the moment it got me out of questioning, but didn’t teach him anything. If I see him again I plan to be firm on the Federal laws and how he is incorrect about the ordinances. That’s for next time though.

@Guy Number 1
This is why I only fly quads with GPS, they can hold their position.
A plane can stall if its not moving and if you move your eyes from a moving plane, who knows what could happen?
It could rise too high then stall. Fly towards the wrong direction (a powerline, tree, person, a dumb bird lol)
I kinda want to fly a plane, but also kinda nervous.
@@conorstewart2214 In the US it's not the law to have a spotter but in the clubs it is encouraged as good practice.
I love it how you called his bluff and he immediately realized he was not dealing with a dummy and backed off.
They can manipulate , write & rewrite history, but anyone who has even just a lick of sense who was paying attention & who is aware of gov & propoganda, knows the reality which is;
gov didn't like citizens to have the power to view & record so much.

VR
there's always a bureaucrat wanting to shut you down
Just someone who saw someone having a bit of fun and wants to start with the legality crap without knowing it.
Everything is fine as long as you jump through all the hoops. What a jerk
jump through all those hoops lol
yeah, nothing like trying to force kids to jump through legal hoops to enjoy a hobby.
When people having fun piss of people who don't like having fun.
Nicely handled, but I just wish that people would research their facts before approaching someone and telling them they can't do something! It just makes them look a little dumb and a bit of a 'Karen'. But well done for explaining and educating him in a respectful way. He seems like a nice guy.
Yeah, It was a positive contact, but I was unable to educate him on the law so that was unfortunate.
@@CustomFPV the way you teach these kind of people is a call to the town hall and a harassment case filed.
At least he kept his composure and sounded somewhat intelligent even though he had no idea what he was talking about
And people wonder why kids don't want to play outside!! WOW
I would not have been so nice or cooperative with Mr. Ranger Sir.
Same. The irony is it's this generation that typically like to be left alone and hate busybodies. I don't suffer these fools well.
So apparently he's retired but yet is in charge of that park..I'm confused
Yikes. Throwing the professional drone pilot card.
A busybody with nothing to do but screw with others. These people need to get a life.
@@CustomFPV absolutely. I wasn't stating that because I thought you did anything wrong... Just because it sucks when you find people operating off of misinformation because often times that same misinformation is going to perpetuate. Great channel!
Yeah, I understand. Thanks for the comment
This is the kind of situation that gives me anxiety whenever I want to fly a drone.
Drone flyers ? Oxymoron
I'd like to know how many people have been injured by an UAV in the park. I suspect no-one has! Its fine for someone to query the right to fly and at least he did listen to you.
Thanks Karen. See you next Tuesday.
I hate when I'm flying and someone starts talking to me. I was following a ship over the river getting great footage and this guy would not stop asking questions, very annoying. You need to concentrate on what you're doing for safety. Well done.
