I'm an old guy, 82, who got back into RC two years ago after a 20 year haitus. All I can say is that the Scout would probably be a better beginners airplane than a trainer like an Apprentice. Just don't go full throttle because these things can go fast. At my club here outside of Phoenix, we race Scouts...lol. However, any beginner absolutely needs a Real Flite simulator and a teacher. Learning to fly without both can get very, very expensive...lol.
That sounds like a fun club! The plane looks as though it flies really well..... I like planes that float and glide with ease. Hope this is one of them.
Thanks for inpiring all of the RC girls to engage in the hobby and explore all of the joys of the RC world. You are my inspiration. This is an excellent video. Come on ladies, let’s enjoy this hobby!
Haven't flown rc planes in five years. Bought this plane after watching this vid. Back to basics again to regain my confidence and what a perfect plane to use. Thanks for the vid it was fun to watch!
I have an Aeroscout. Glad I bought it as my first plane. Easy to fly and land. For the type, it is reasonably fun, too. Flies upside down ok. The rolls are a bit slow but it can do it. After a few hundred flights the only repair is to the front wheel; avoid bonking down on the front wheel during landing.
Nice review! This is the plane we learned to fly on. Much better than the super weak Sport Cub S2, which is not worth the money you spend for it. Beginners should see that you still need enough space to fly the AeroScout. It is pretty fast for a beginner plane and with safe on, your control over the plane is limited. Use the rudder on top of the ailerons when turning in safe. What can happen on hard landings, is that the servo of the front wheel (and thus the rudder) will break. Great beginner plane, especially if you learn alone. Good to have AS3X and the three flight modes and the panic button. Always stay "two mistakes high" above the ground.
In addition to loops, rolls, inverted, etc., the AeroScout will do a slip (sideslip, forward slip) very well if you are trying to bleed off altitude for a spot landing. To do a slip, apply rudder to one side and then steer with the ailerons. Some downward elevator may be required to maintain airspeed. In a turn, apply rudder to the outside of the turn and maintain bank angle with ailerons. It's fun!
Great video. Thank you for talking.... so many people just go fly and don't say a word. Really appreciate your input. It helps when we know what you're thinking while you're doing something. Nice job!
I got the BNF version and 3 Spektrum G2 batteries and 2200 twin charger to go with my NX8 radio. Just ordered some voltage alarms after seeing your screen note. Glad for your real world and personable presentations. I always enjoy your cute spunky, thought out approach.
Thanks for the video. I recently purchased this for my 15 year old grandson. We're going to take it on it's maiden flight soon. I've not flown RC before but we've been practicing on the simulator a little bit. Honestly, I'm a bit nervous about how it might go but I'll at least make sure I have good sight selection and good weather.
Thank you for this! Dabble with quads and been thinking of a fixed wing that's RTF to start with and this is perfect! Big enough to add FPV later on. Great stuff!
Im a 6 channel heli guy and some 4 channel helis. Im getting into planes maybe. My 1st one is on order, its a 23 inch wingspan super cub on amazon. If i get used to flying it i will graduate to this. Ty for the “lessons”. Love seeing gals in the hobby. I watch the rc saylors, husband/wife team.
I have 12 rc planes, 2 of them are Airoscouts. Tweak the main landing gear to achieve positive camber on tires, it will "stick" itself to the ground on landing.
I don't care who one is, or their skillset, when it comes to fun no worries flights this is a great win.. Can't wait for the bigger Ultrix to arrive, but this is a great fun time rig..
I already knew how to fly but i bought the aero scout to just play around with. Maybe fpv in the future. Its a great plane to just throw in the car and go. and not have to worry so much about dinging it up.
I like your presentation.... not a lot of repetitive talk. to the point and move on. I just got this plane. My first rc. Learning the controls is a learning curve, but I'm getting it. Thanks for the video...
Thank you for getting me interested in RC planes. I have even talked to a company about moving into a NX 6 if I can. I don't believe that I am going to end up with a lot of planes but you never know right. As an old man I need something to do get me out of the house and who knows I might lear something. So thank you again
Nice video guys waiting on my timber evo to come but I want to pick up an aero scout just to toss in the car and have ready to go when ever weather allows for a flight. Great beginner plane but just looks like a fun no hassle plane for more advanced pilots.👍👍
I hate that you never got to experience the HH HobbyzoneSports Super Cub that came out about 15 years ago. It was the first 3 channel plane that we (I say 'we' because my wife wanted it). Phenomenal aircraft. It had an earlier version of SAFE. While it's a true trainer, I'd recommend that you seek one out via Ebay or one of your many connections. I still have ours and hope to get it back in the air as I'm getting back into this hobby.
Thankyou so much, my grandson has a few social interaction problems, he loves his helicopters and planes, he is 6 years old, he has drones, but he loves more what your doing, can you recommend a good starter, I live on a farm so can make an airstrip or helipad, any advice from anyone on this site would be so very much appreciated Thankyou
Hi,..Nice Video, long time Acro drone guy just starting fixed wings and bought this plane...Did you Ever Explain that Rate Switch ? What does it do on a Plane ?
@@mtnmyke I got one for my BD in August. Have flown it about 6 times. Handles the club grass landing strip just fine so long as it has been recently cut. Taller grass will have it struggling to takeoff. Like it a lot but do have trouble with my landings because the plane is very floaty, if you know what I mean. For me it takes a lot of runway to get it on the ground. Maybe try that double flare technique like you did in this video?
Hey, great video! I especially like the rc aircraft vids, the tech has come along way since my rc flying days. It would be good to understand what local rules are for rc flying. Maybe a vid about rules (laws) for flying locally and potentially in other areas would be informative. I am Canadian and live in the Vancouver area. In recent years, since the increased popularity of drone use, Transport Canada has taken a more active role in rc flight pursuant to the Aeronautics Act of Canada. In that act, rc fliers are basically separated into two camps, model airplane as a hobby and drone/uav operation for commercial purposes. So, producing a ‘how to vid’ for beginners that includes rc flight - is a commercial flight in Canada and the flight captured by the provisions of the act. Sorry to be so wordy and I know that rules for rc ops is different in the US, I just think a vid describing the rules would be good. 🙂
Had mine over a 1year now been to scared to fly it... i finally did and wrecked it all up.. was able to superglue fuselage together again it may still fly... but i never found out where my switches for throttle control, different modes, and kill switch was at.. how do i learn about the switches?
I'm soo pissed right now. I dropped $250 on this plane because, as I found out the hard way, it no longer comes with a battery. (Takes me over an hour to drive to the store). So I took it all apart and back together, checking and found no pinched cables, ailerons connected to CH2, swapped those wires around and tested, took front wheel completely off wondering if that was cause ailerons to lock up. Tested in my kitchen at home again after standing outside an hour dinking with it. Tested with battery hanging out and not touching any wires or rods. The ailerons still will not move. I thought maybe it was the white tape running along the top of the wing so I removed it. Now seeing your videos no one has removed it, so I guess I screwed myself over on that lol. I'm driving back to the hobby store tomorrow which is 65 miles away. I'm at a total loss at this time. At least the plane didn't get destroyed trying to fly it with non working ailerons. Very frustrated at this point when I've heard nothing but good about this plane.
Great kite it does all the tricks. BUT be careful the weak point is the NOSE Wheel come in to hard the plastic will breakaway from the foam apart from that brilliant kite
Cautionary tale. On mine the carbon spar that transits the vertical stabilizer became irretrievably stuck about 1/3 of the way through, despite lubing it. Wouldn't budge, , ,even with pliars! Had to send it back to Horizon for repair. Sooooo. . .feed that spar in VERY slowly and if it starts to bind EVEN A LITTLE, pull it out and sand it until it fits snugly but doesn't bind.
By far my favorite plane to fly, it will be in the air why all other planes are grounded due to wind or weather. This plame can take a beating and ask for more.

New models usually do take some trim adjustments on the maiden. I find that many of the models tend to pitch up (even with the CG set with proper battery placement). I think they do that to be conservative (better to pitch up than down!). So if you have a buddy who can trim it on the maiden, that would be ideal. Otherwise, a tip is to click the trim button in the direction you're needing to hold the stick to keep the model flying straight/level. Also I believe they recommend trimming at half throttle.
