Maria McKee, Van Dyke Parks & Stevie Ray Vaughan - Troubled Waters + Sailin' Shoes [1989]

  • [Mono] Performances from an eclectic USTV program, which featured numerous performers gathered together, allowing them to perform individually, and together, for the first time in some cases.
    This is such an occasion, with Maria McKee performing with Van Dyke Parks and the house band, which includes Hiram Bullock on guitar; Don Alias on percussion; Philippe Saisse on keyboards; Tom Barney on bass; and Omar Hakim on drums for the first number, and then Stevie Ray Vaughan steps in with the entire band to lend some tones to the Little Feat number, "Sailin' Shoes".
    I believe that is Rosemary Butler and Lani Groves who appears everywhere on network television broadcasts from this period of time, on backing vocals.
    Hal Willner was the creative genius behind this special program.

      There were a handful of artists who I would pigeonhole as Outlaw Christian Artists in late 80s and early 90s....Johnny Cash, Bono, T-Bone Burnett, Tonio K, Bruce Cockburn, Sam Phillips, Julie/Buddy Miller, Mark Heard, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch/David Rawlings, Van Morrison, Victoria Williams, Alison Krauss, Daniel Lanois, Maria Mckee, ...basically musicians who expressed Faith in their music, but seemed to be left of center and who were not part of or who left the CCM Gospel Music Industry. I think most of these artists never got the respect they deserved.

    Maria. Voice of an angel. I was a teenager when I first heard her incredible voice with Lone Justice. I’m 58 now and she still takes my breath away when I hear her sing. This is fantastic footage. Thanks for posting. Best wishes from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    From David Sanborn's "Night Music"... A terrific show while it lasted. He kept getting all sorts of top talent and having them play way out of genre...With terrific results.
    Sanborn said the sponsors didn't know what "demographic" the show was aimed at. Musicians!

      @@kimrileymusic Totally! It came on at around 2AM in Houston and I taped it religiously... where most talk shows would have one tune, Night Music would be 50% amazing music. I once mentioned to a guy that I loved it, and he immediately asked if I was a musician. He said they'd all come home from their gigs and flip it on to unwind.

    Thanks man, this is awesome. Loved Maria since first hearing about her via the Old Grey Whistle Test (BBC tv show in the mid-80s) but have never managed to see her live ... yet. I did see Stevie a couple of times and they remain to this day among the most amazing gigs I've been too. To see him backing up one of my favourite singers is just great and look at the smile on her face at the end ... wonderful.

    Is that Robert Palmer playing the keyboard in the background? Of course, he wrote "Sailin' Shoes."

    • @whatsforafters7843
      @whatsforafters7843  7 років тому +2

      Seriously doubt that Robert Palmer is in the line-up playing keyboards, although there are quite a number of personnel for this performance. Also, don't want to burst your bubble, but the song "Sailin' Shoes" was co-composed by the band leader in this clip, Van Dyke Parks, and Lowell George, of the band Little Feat. Little Feat was the basic band backing Robert Palmer, when he recorded the song on his lp, "Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley".
