    I was wrong to say that acrobatics and athletics are bad to put into your major or minor skills. It actually can help with your governing attributes. For more info on leveling, there's a UA-camr named Lyle Shnub who explains how leveling works perfectly.

    I have another tip to beginners: create a backstory for your character. Make him someone you truly care about. Then start exploring Morrowind as that character. Try to understand the world from his perspective and make decisions like he would based on what kind of character he is.
    Morrowind is one of those rare games that allows you to truly roleplay your character. Take advantage of this spectacular opportunity and experience an unforgettable adventure.

      @@user-783hhss7w2oifhe Its only trash if you try to min max. Since Morrowind has no level scaling for enemies like Oblivion you don´t need to min max, you will still be the strong enough to beat the game if you just roleplay.

      This isn't D&D. A backstory is useless when there's no way to act out on it nor does Morrowind offer many ways to roleplay. It's not Planescape Torment, Arcanum or Fallout 2, you're not gonna get dozens of different reactions or options based on your skills, attributes, class or race

    This all made morrowind great, the fact that you felt like in an actual adventure, were if you took the wrong turn you would get lost, you had to ask for directions, look for the fastest way, pick your fights, it all combined to a great RPG

    • @robertpotter7541
      @robertpotter7541 7 років тому +74

      Getting lost was a much bigger deal in morrowind too, you couldnt just say oh well and fast travel somewhere, if you didnt have teleportation spells your ass was walking quite a bit and it made the game feel that much more immersed because you are always thinking about the best ways to get around the map

    I got Morrowind a couple of months ago and nearly gave up on it because of the combat early on being so shady and frustrating despite reading up on it and being warned about it. However, I stuck with it and once I got used to the fatigue factor and raised my attacking skills a bit, the combat did a complete 180. If the game frustrates you early on, be patient and bear with it because it's more than worth it once you get immersed into the game and your character is built up a little bit. looking back to where it started. watching my character develop in all the different skills and trades is one of the many incredible aspects of Morrowind.

    • @PinInCruiZ
      @PinInCruiZ 7 років тому +13

      Yeah it only takes common sense, really. With weapon skill at 50 and decent (50) agility you rarely miss even at low fatigue. Why would a scrub who holds bow for the first time in their life (let's say skill level 5) land at least 1 shot out of 10? That's what you have trainers for!

      That's the spirit. People also tend to forget that spending money on buying progress in certain skills (increase walking speed anyone?) at trainers or teachers is actually a valid option in the game. Instead of hoarding, and the economy system is of course broken as in any TES game, make USE of it.

      People get pissed because they feel weak, and they usually play to get certain feeling of "Power". But here in MW you start as a common person with pretty basic skills, and then you have to get stronger during the journey, it's part of it.
      Players also stop playing other games for that same reason, like competitive games or hard games (just to put an example)

      @gerdforster883 4 роки тому +10

      The thing is, around early mid-game, cliff racers become very handy. They are very common, pretty easy to kill and drop cliffracer plumes, which can be used to make levitation potions. Cliff racer plumes and Trama roots are extremely common, so if you invest a little bit of work into your alchemy skill, you have a sh*itload of levitation potions, which are very useful.
      So yeah, they are annoying, but very very helpful.

    How to enjoy Morrowind via some more general advice, by someone who's played it plenty:
    Step 1: Please choose speed as a starting stat. Getting around slowly will frustrate anyone.. You could also take the steed as your sign and feel quite speedy right out of the gate, but your mileage may vary. Majoring in athletics is probably overkill.
    Step 2: Put at LEAST one armor skill as a primary, and block if you plan to use shields. You DON'T want to stand around getting hit to skill up your armor and you DON'T want to lose the leveling bonus for leaving it as a minor.
    Step 3: Learn the travel networks. It's fast travel that's actually part of the world. The mages' guild, both types of intervention, boats, silt striders and the mark and recall spells can really help you get around if you learn the locations the spells will warp you to from your current location. Making coherent use of the interlocking travel nets will speed your progress considerably, letting you jump all over VVardenfell without feeling like a total cheat. You'll find Skyrim's fast travel quite patronizing once you've mastered this skill.
    Step 4: PUT. YOUR WEAPON. AWAY. Being combat ready when you talk brings a penalty to social interactions.
    Step 5: if you're a multi-guild kinda guy, join the fighters' guild AFTER the thieves' guild.

    • @Keyecomposer
      @Keyecomposer 7 років тому +25

      If you do still enjoy playing Skyrim there is a mod that you can get that makes your journal entries more detailed and takes away quest markers, e.g instead of needing to go to a particular cave and just having a quest marker on the map it will be removed and instead the players journal entry will have more information on the location saying something like 'I can find the cave North-West of Whiterun'.

      @AdCosmo 7 років тому +34

      I love Morrowind but quest markers are important. They compensate for the lack of natural sense of space that you would have if you really lived in the game world. You have a map, but neither you nor the quest givers think to put a dot on it? Also, if you take a long break it's an even worse feeling of "what was I doing?"

    • @Keyecomposer
      @Keyecomposer 7 років тому +6

      As long as the direction to the quest is thorough and accurate then you don't really need a marker.

    • @Diegoshadow85
      @Diegoshadow85 7 років тому +22

      Problem is the new TES games as well as fallout games are build around these markers. If you turned them off you probably couldn't finish the game. So you would have to completely overhaul quests, dialogs, pacing, world building to really fix this. It's not simple "just turn the marker off".
      Accidentally another thing these markers do is that you don't really pay attention. You can just skip dialogue and go to the next breadcrumb, you don't look at world around you, nothing.
      I mean I enjoyed oblivion, skyrim and finished every fallout game too but now I look back at it last few installments is not YOU playing game, it's like you are just walking camera following trail from one point to other, without thinking.

      @@waaaaaaah5135 The gameplay and the world were top-notch for me. Really enjoyed running around in there hacking away. I like how there are many people you can sell to in the guilds. I like the transportation between guilds. And I LOVE how you have to go *find* shit. You have to figure out where to go to accomplish a mission.
      However, I thought there was some terrible product design and disappointing game feature implementation, particularly the quests journal. There is no way they could not have programmed in there a way to track your quests. Either to create a page for completed quests and/or active quests. To highlight active quests, or even allow you to strikethrough completed quests.
      To me, there are sooo many ways to implement that in a game from that era, it made the game unplayable for me. I think it made the game feel entirely unrealistic. If you are a champion in a world like that, and you actually have a physical notebook in which you are documenting quests, 100 times out of 100, you are going to cross off a completed quest. Quite honestly, it turned me off. I have to say, ultimately Oblivion takes the Elder Scrolls cake. I think Oblivion would be a no-brainer-win if you were forced to hunt down quest locations.

      What exactly with directX are you having trouble with? Maybe I can help. As far as when I installed MGSO, it was a series of "next, next, next, *program takes over*, next next next". There is a very important choice you make when it asks how "fast" your computer is. Unfortunately, MGSO takes a very high end rig mainly because of how its optimized with a game that's no longer in development let a lone updates.

      its hard because it could be several things. Try running mgso options again and re run code patcher. Also sometimes in the beginning it ask for a basic speed setting for your computer. Try the lowest setting. If none of that works sometimes it can just be your hardware

    • @alexman319

    I have no idea why people don't like putting acrobatics in their major or minor skills. Only major and minor skills being increased affect your progress to the next level and acrobatics is easy to increase. Plus being a strength attribute it helps you maximize your strength per level.

    Man, I dunno why you all are hating on bows so much. I always main'd a bow on my playthroughs with a stealth build. Until my latest playthroughs which I still main'd a bow, but with a summoner build.
    I used to collect all the summoning items I could and used like, 20-30 of them at a time to create an army of skeletons/bonewalkers to kill bosses with the difficulty all the way up.
    Kind of tedious to use all the items but totally satisfying to see an army of minions wreck hiricine.

      You could always enchant arrows, but you had to do it manually for every single one of them. Great for training purposes (collect tiny souls > turn into magic arrow), but too tedious and expensive otherwise. Then again... mods.
      Also, why doesn't anyone mention CROSSbows? The high damage would often knock enemies down and allow you to hit them hard for a short period of time. You could also enchant bolts btw. ;)

    Some other notes about the major/minor skills is that only skills leveling in major and minor advance will advance your leveling, having acrobatics and athletics in them will have you end up leveling faster then your ready for (e.g. combat skills not high enough to deal with mobs at those levels).
    As I recall in addition to skills in major and minor starting at higher levels, skills that match one of your two main attributes also start with +5 to that skill.
    When leveling, the skills that are leveled determine the bonus availability to an attribute (skills not major or minor affect this the same way as well). So if you leveled armorer sololy o reach the next level you'll just be able to increase strength by 5, but you can increase non major/minor skills to get other bonuses, e.g. increasing speech and medium armor by like 5 or perhaps 10, when you level with armorer your will have the ability to increase endurance and personality by 5 as well. So leveling well can require a strategy from chargen.

    • @BUckENbooz
      @BUckENbooz  7 років тому +4

      Note this guys. I completely forgot to explain governing attributes. Depending on the skills you have in your major or minor section will depend on its leveling governing attributes.

    • @Doomsterlobster
      @Doomsterlobster 7 років тому

      I recommend mods to do away with the attribute maxing. Madd Leveler is the simplest I've found, staying true to the original intent and balance: you only get to raise attributes with x1 multiplier at level-up, but every 3 ranks in a skill give you a point in the governing attribute.

    • @McManus667

      "When leveling, the skills that are leveled determine the bonus availability to an attribute (skills not major or minor affect this the same way as well)." I usually wore medium armor early game just to get that endurance up. Just stood infront of a Scrib or Kwama Forager and let them hit it enough to get the 5+ end each level. Its very min-max, but it really gives you the edge you need to play it casually (which is an oxymoron if ive ever heard one)

    • @jaernihiltheus7817
      @jaernihiltheus7817 7 років тому +4

      +Skadi
      Kind of sort of correction: NPC's don't scale with level, but random encounters do.
      If you come across a bandit that's level 3, he'll always be level 3.
      You might also come across a rat in the wilderness when YOU'RE level 3, but if you're level 17, that same spawn zone in the wilderness might spawn a Golden Saint (each spawn zone has it's own level listings.)
      Don't believe me? run around the Grazelands at level 5 for a while, then run around again at level 25.
      Scamps, Winged Twilights, and Ogrims EVERYWHERE! (There's even more of them then there are Cliff Racers! :o)
      So no, properly leveling your combat and armor skills of choice is EXTREMELY important, especially once you hit levels 15+. Is min/maxing necessary? No.In fact you should be fine so long as you keep the attribute increases above 1 (although, I personally do min/max for the first handful of levels, but that's more so for the early game boost than a necessary evil.)
      But is ignoring your combat skills outside of roleplaying smart? No, because you will die..... A lot.

  • @BanditOfBandwidth
    @BanditOfBandwidth 5 років тому +1

    I have just finished Morrowind today for the first time.
    The first step is indeed confusing and hard as balls, but it does feel very rewarding in the long run when you get used to things.
    I thought that without markers I was going to lose track of what I was doing and basically screw myself over having to redo all my steps. But it went smoother than I initially expected.
    Unlike in Skyrim, where you pick up 10 different quests and play em like a shopping list (got nothing against that. It's fun to me in its own way) in Morrowind I always had 1 or 2 quests / factions I was working on and you don't really lose track then.
    The quests also tend to be shorter than quests in later games, making them more manageable.
    Once you're in the flow, reading the quests becomes natural.
    And if you do wish to proceed with a quest you quit a while back, as shown in the video there IS a quest list that should help you find it back and notes of what the last thing was you did for it.
    Just drop the mindset of "getting all quests of the town and do 'em whenever you feel like it."
    And I can understand the spite now of how unrewarding discovering you're the Dragonborn was.
    In Morrowind I felt like some sort of Moses trying to prove to the province and myself that I may or may not be the man of legend by doing several trials, rather than getting a title for killing my first giant lizard.
    For all I know, it could turn out to be somebody else that I'd have to end up assisting, or I'd become the man of legend because of my actions and determination, not because of destiny.
    Comparing it with Skyrim, the dragonborn stuff does feel lacking storywise. (Going to play Oblivion for the first time next. See what that is all about.)
    The combat system feels wonky, especially at the start.
    And to be honest, Personally I think that's a thing that hasn't passed the test of time quite as well.
    I figure it's a D&D thing, with calculating hit or miss, but when you swing a sword or shoot and arrow and it doesn't visibly miss or hit, it betrays your senses and feels like it's cheating you then.
    But you can start with hit & runs to get a weapon skill up so you'll miss less. It will become quite doable eventually.
    Also, a good tip is saying that in the first town, after you exit the ship at the start,there's a vendor in the town that sells spells. (you don't purchase spellbooks; in this game there's a seperate vendor option to buy spells directly).
    You can purchase at least a heal spell and destruction spell from it, for those that wish to make a mage. Might make things go a little smoother at the beginning.
    It sounds obvious, but it wasn't obvious to me.
    Worst come to worst, you can always find plenty of videos regarding the alchemy and spellmaker exploits and have a grand old time with nuking the province~
    All in all, Morrowind has aged well and I found it still fun to play.

    I used to play it in my early teens on Xbox, I mostly wandered trying to figure out the inner mechanics of upgrading your character. But ultimately mostly ending up lost as I didn't like reading big chunks of dialog. Its actually a painful memory, as I was dealing with depression and spending too much time playing games like this and Warhammer 40k online multiplayer that led to a psychotic break with reality. I was treated for it eventually but suffered for over a year due to misdiagnosis. I know most people can easily get in and out of this type of game but when I would play it becomes everything in frame.

    IMPORTANT: when building a character you should consider which factions you want to join. Factions in Morowind place both attribute and skill requirements on the player if they want to be promoted. I highly recommend looking up what favored attributes and skills the faction of your choice has asap so that you can focus on improving the relevant attributes as you level. ALSO: keep in mind that in order to maximize attributes gain it is important to level up as soon as you can! When you level, you have multipliers to your attribute increase options based on what 10 skills you increased. HOWEVER these multipliers do not carry over to the next level! Therefore, leveling fifteen skills before actually leveling the character means that your NEXT character level will have less multipliers and your attribute progression will be hindered!

    I worked out a system for my new characters that always worked flawlessly. Get gold, train like a beast. Gather Ajira's ingredients on the walk from Seyda Neen to Pelagiad so you can rob Galbedir in the mages guild of her soul gems. then go to the guard tower in Balmora and jack the sword of white woe. Go to Suran, steal another sword of white woe from that guard tower, go to the trader and kill him. you get a 40gp assault but no 1000gp murder. Take his ebony bracer, darts, and dagger. With all these goodies you can go and visit the scamp in caldera. Kill the lord of the manor for an ebony longsword and jack his orcish armor from a crate on the top level. From all this you should have almost 200k and you can go back to Balmora and train until you are broke. Congratulations you have reached level 20 something and haven't left a town (minus picking ingredients and walking to Balmora of course). This is my routine I developed after many years playing on the Xbox it is rather foolproof, but it takes time to sell all your loot to the scamp.

    Very interesting and nostalgic video. I haven't be able to play Morrowind for years, because I don't game on PC. One thing I wish Bethesda would do is STOP scaling. One thing I loved about Morrowind (and there are many) was that you were either powerful, or not. The world didn't level with you, because that's not how the world works. Maybe in TES VI things will change. ESO is scaled beyond belief. Its a great game, but fighting a level 45 mud crab just seems a little well, strange.

    I like morrowind, but holy fuck I hate all the people who bash on oblivion and skyrim. If they kept the same mechanics as morrowind the elder scrolls series would've died A LONG time ago. Not everyone wants to read journals, miss half their sword swings, and deal with no quest markers. It's a good game but people need to stop fucking bitching. I loved the game. I'm not hating on it.

      How is the "to hit" system bad, but the "how much damage" one is not. And why is it bad for video games??? This system does not have to stay in tabletop games, it's FINE in video games. Is it bad because you see your sword hit but not register? Because if that's the reason then, that wasn't a choice. This game was made in 2002, by 6 people on a dying studio's budget; they couldn't make all these animations.
      I hate it when people say that "because it's a video games, I should hit everything!", which is STUPID. I like morrowind's combat because you can't just cheese every enemy by kiting them, you need your skills. And just because something is different, doesn't mean it should be left out of all video games.

    • @RangerJackWalker
      @RangerJackWalker 6 років тому +5

      Don't make it real time game. Hit percentages (when you clearly see that your action hit) have no place in real time game systems. Those are for turn based systems.

      Refreshing simplicity? No, total dumbing down on every single level. Skyrim is for action oriented retards, Morrowind and older RPGs are for actual roleplayers, people that love to have choices followed by consequences. There is NOTHING of that in Skyrim because it has the depth of a puddle.
      The combat system in Morrowind is based on pen and paper roleplaying with the obligatory dice rolls, nothing wrong with that. Baldur's Gate had it, Drakensang had it and so many others as well. What is also annoying as fuck is that damage ranges were removed and you always do damage X or damage Y in case of a "strong attack", pathetic. While Dark Souls is amazing, a damage range could've given the combat even more excitement - and criticals, of course.

    Here are a few tips I've come up with:
    1. Alchemy. Learning alchemy and making potions is one of the most valuable skills you can have, because you can just take ingredients from wherever and make free potions for yourself. You can also sell whatever you don't need to make money, just make sure to invest some of that in alchemy training.
    2. Join a faction. When you join a faction (mages guild, fighters guild) you get access to all sorts of freebies. You can sleep for free and take certain items, which are useful in your quests. You don't have to do ANYTHING to join other than ask, so you can just join, take your crap, and leave. Playing nice with a faction, though, does open up a lot more trainers and options.
    3. Consider a great house. Joining a great house is also pretty simple, and many early quests in the houses tend to be fairly easy. The early Telvanni quests in particular are mostly fetch and return, or going to deliver/ask questions. You can also have a good relationship with that house and get cheaper items and spells. (Felen Maryon, the only guy who can teach you to summon a winged twilight, comes to mind)
    4. Steal stuff. Yes, I know, not very honorable, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. There is a LOT to steal in Morrowind that can be resold. If you have a lot of money, you'll have access to a lot more options.
    5. Train! Unlike Oblivion, you are not limited to training with someone a certain amount of times per day. You are only limited by the amount of money you have, and the skill of your trainer.
    6. Lastly, turn off Tribunal until you're well prepared. This expansion is the reason why assassins come attack you when you sleep, and it can annoy first time players into quitting. Turn off this and Bloodmoon until you have established yourself in the main game.

    I am playing this on game pass and I am loving it. I love the fact that you need to actually figure things out, by talking to people, reading your journal, etc. Granted, I felt a bit lost in some places in my first few hours in, and I looked a few things up on google as well. But I eventually learned to get around the map and cities on my own and that was satisfying to me. And I still have most of the map to uncover, but I will get at that eventually.
    I also love the fact that the visuals are mostly clean, with no quest markers around, or a compass at the top of the screen, damage numbers, or these sort of things that modern games have. AC Odyssey comes to mind (which I love btw). There were question markers everywhere you looked, among other things as well. Eventually, they became so annoying to look at, that I just went into the HUD options and turned everything off aside from celebrations. The visuals became so much cleaner, and I played that way ever since :)

    I love Morrowind. I have fun with Oblivion and Skyrim, yes, but it speaks volumes that Morrowind is the only TES game where I bothered finishing the main quest. It is not actually absurd to call the mainline TES series "Morrowind games" rather than "Elder Scrolls games" even though they're obviously not actual Morrowind games, because Morrowind is the basic template for all of them. Arena and Daggerfall are completely different beasts and genres of games, and if you add to that the MMO and the spin offs, "Elder Scroll games" is vague. Maybe we can settle on "Morrowind sequels" ^^?

    Don't use Acrobatics and Athletics as minor/major? Why? Every single character I ever played had those tho as either minor or major. Warriors, mages, sneaky ones, they all had it. You're probably asking why...
    Did you knew that athletics allows you to run more without getting fatigued? It is also a skill that you level up all the time simply by getting around.
    As for the Acrobatics, it's more of a personal preference, I jump a lot and climb whatever I see so it's a must have for me. It also allows you to jump higher and fall from greater distances and (I think) does the same thing for jumps that Athletics does for running, which is decreased stamina consumption.
    So yeah, in my honest opinion those two are just as good picks as anything else.

      geøstigma it's because you could grind them easily to level 100 without picking them. Yeah, there is really not much problem with having them, but they are not useful if you do a bit of power gaming

    • @thegeostigma
      @thegeostigma 6 років тому

      I guess you're right since I tend to re-play it really slowly and with a couple of mods that cripple economy and thus make things like training spamming not as possible as they are in the original game.
      Personally I pick them as major most of the time since only those skills are the ones that affect the level progress and I know that I will be running and jumping for the rest of the game while let's say, conjuration (just an example) might become obsolete at some point.
      But in my honest opinion, these different experiences that all of us had with Morrowind is what made this game so good in the first place. There's really no right or wrong way to play it although some things most definitely work better than the rest.

    Everyone who I've been linking that mod guide to, I don't think that modding it gives the "vanilla" experience. I do think, however, that it might help ease you into the vanilla game more. I stopped using combat mods for example after playing modded for a while. I honestly don't think the vanilla experience is better, just lots of Morrowind fans might disregard you for only playing modded. I've only played modded, as the only thing in Morrowind that bugged me was no magicka regen. It doesn't really matter that much imo, as long as you're having fun with this game. Hope you enjoy this game as much as I did!

I know this sounds like a pain but do the fallowing. Uninstall Morrowind, and completely delete MGSO and re-download. Follow this with a simple PC restart and there should be no reason it won't install properly. Make sure to when downloading MGSO we install the most recent version of it. Let me know how it goes.

      BUckENbooz I tried reinstalling the game because (I think even before trying this) the game reverts to the launcher After I hit the play button in the launcher so I can't play. Also when I reinstalled and looked in the morrowind file I still say mgso

    I love the fact that you showcased a lot of the little tips and tricks that everyone forgot about. Morrowind is so much more detailed than Oblivion and Skyrim. Imo the fact that the game never holds your hand whatsoever gives you the true elder scrolls experience.

    I'm serious there is a mod that makes morrowind have the same combat mechanic than oblivion so just go there and download it.
