  • There's been increasing talk about how visible light (especially blue light) from phones and computer screens could potential hurt your skin and cause wrinkles and aging.
    But is visible light worth worrying about, or is it just marketing hype? This is a big topic so I'm going to talk about it over two videos!
    In this installment we're going to talk about the sort of skin damage visible light causes, and how you can protect your skin from it.

    I recommend for anyone that is concerned regarding LED light therapy after watching this to refer to Dr Dray’s video - ‘LED Light Therapy: Blue Light Acne Treatment, Red Light Rejuvenation’ She thankfully clears this up at 10:57. Edit: I have commented this on multiple peoples comments in hope this helps. As I was really concerned after watching this video. I’d be interested to Lab Muffin Beauty Sciences studies in comparison to the studies that Dr Dray presents. It would be baffling if dermatologists were using LED light therapy that was actually harming people, however according to Dr Dray this is not true due to the amount of exposure you receive from these treatments.

    So, if I understand it correctly:
    -There are a few spectrums of light: infra red, visible light, UVA, UVB, UVC.
    -The shorter the wave lenghts, the more energy they generate, a.k.a the stronger and more harmful they are.
    -Blue light falls into the visible light spectrum and can potentially be harmful, because a small study has shown that it causes hyperpigmentation / melasma in people with darker skin. More reseach is still needed.
    -To protect against blue light you need a product with iron-oxide; most sunscreens do not contain this chemical.

    Thanks for this video! I want to learn so much about this! It's so confusing to read conflicting statements. First, I considered LED skin therapy and I read that infrared and red were supposed to be rejuvenating, green decreasing pigmentation and blue killing acne bacteria. And then I read all those lights were harmful to skin and ageing! Aargh! Apparently it's a complicated subject. I would like to know specifically your recommendations regarding LED light therapies. I love your science based approach! I wish everyone would be like that and not just post stuff on the internet that they heard or read somewhere as if it were truth...or to sell something..

    I'm kind of confused now. Because I use a LED Mask by Neutrogena. It says blue light (415nm) has anti bacterial properties - it is recommended to use it when you have light acne. And red light (633nm) can increase the process of wound healing (according to a NASA study) and collagen production which is anti aging.
    Now you say those lights can hurt our skin. I feel like I got tricked by the marketing again. Thanks for your informative video!

    • @LabMuffinBeautyScience
      @LabMuffinBeautyScience  5 років тому +11

      It's blue and violet light that's the concern, not red, and the main issue is pigment. It's worth remembering that acne also causes pigment and inflammation!

    PS: human skin appears to be capable of generating serotonin in reaction to light exposure (not clear to me what wavelength(s) though), so I'm a bit worried about that if I would wear hats and cover my skin all the time. Also a little bit of light diagonally into the eyes is important to prevent the winter blues (also because of serotonin?). So I wouldn't wear sunglasses all day, unless it's really sunny.
    Of course I don't want to damage my eyes or my skin, it seems that a little bit (as with UV for vit.D) is necessary and a lot of it is harmful.

      Like often, it is the dose makes the poison. Like how you'd die without oxidants in your body, but too many is really bad for you which is why antioxidants got popular.

    I'm left with so many questions.
    So is sunscreen completely useless? If not, which is better chemical or mineral? Do I have to wear it inside the house if it doesn't protect against visible light? Do I have to reapply it?
    What do sunscreens even really protect against? Do clothes really block all wavelengths of light? Do I have to live my life in a coffin?

    • @sadknowledgeworker
      @sadknowledgeworker 5 років тому +27

      TL; DR: Sunscreen is a must for protecting your skin against invisible UV light, choose one that you like and want to reapply often and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Blue and violet light are less damaging than UV light, especially if your skin tone is light and you aren't prone to pigmentation issues; use antioxidants and don't go sunbathing.
      Sunscreen is super useful in protecting against UV light, which the human eye can't see. If the sunscreen is well formulated, it doesn't matter which type you pick as long as it doesn't cause irritation and as long as you can reapply it often and liberally. Whether you wear sunscreen inside your home depends on several factors: how concerned you are about skin aging and photo damage, how much direct sunlight you have in your home, how prone to pigmentation your skin is, your personal preferences, etc.
      As stated in the video, blue and violet light can cause damage even though they're not UV light and they're visible to the human eye, but the damage won't be as significant compared to that caused by UV light. Your best bet in fighting blue and violet light, provided that that's something you want to do, would be to use antioxidants in your skin care and avoid excessive exposure to sunlight (the latter part is also general advice for avoiding UV light, too).
      Living in a coffin has never been a viable option for me, but YMMV. And clothes don't protect that well against UV light - they have a very low SPF, higher if the fabric is densely woven and thick, but there are clothes available with UVF of 30-50. I'm not sure whether clothes protect against visible light, too, my guess would be that they do if the fabric is thick enough, but I currently have no idea how UV-protective clothing is made and whether it's effective against blue and violet light as well.

    Hi Labmuffin. I would love to see a video where you analyse the claims/benefits/negative effects of devices that use near infrared radiation such as the Currentbody red light and infrared mask. I would not be at all surprised if the claims about generating collagen in the skin are bogus or exaggerated, but beyond wasting money on a potentially ineffective product, I am more concerned that it could actually damage skin and cause premature ageing. Numerous studies have shown that infrared radiation can indeed damage and age skin as well as muscle and bone. However, I am not a scientist and it's hard to work out from the available information whether this means the level of IR in home use devices would also be damaging - especially with long term use. The currentbody product is FDA approved, which suggests that is safe in a certain respect, but this may only mean that the device won't burn or electrocute you and says nothing about the long term effect on skin damage - which probably hasn't been studied for such devices! Thanks for your amazing videos :).

    @Lab Muffin Beauty Science I'm a bit puzzled. I've read that melanin has antioxidant effects in the skin, which helps it protect the skin from free radicals created by UVA. I've also read that antioxidants can also behave as pro-oxidants though, so maybe that's it. Do they know for sure that it's extra free radical damage in dark skinned individuals, or could it just be that darker skinned individuals naturally tan more deeply?

      Hi Juliana .. I used a light therapy device called the Bioptron on my face and it has totally destroyed my skin. I now have no barrier ... It caused me to have a fungal outbreak... so I am guessing it destroyed the balance of flora on my skin.. I cant even use a basic moisturiser as it causes inflammation. not to mention I used to have lovely plump apples in my cheeks in fact people used to ask me if I had my cheeks done. they are gone :( so it has destroyed the collagen in my skin. Please anyone thinking about light therapy ... think again ..do your homework . If only I knew then what I know now I would never of gone near light treatment.. .. Bioptron is visible light not led .. but I would be very weary .. They tell you anything to sell a product. Hope this was helpful.

      Ah yes, let's completely ignore our physical health and wellbeing in a favor of an unevidenced assertion about an afterlife and a god. /s
      Seriously, even if you believe that nonsense, do you not think your god would want you to honor the life and body he gave you by taking care of it and yourself? What on earth is wrong with looking after yourself in every way, including your skin? You do realize that people can give attention to more than one thing at a time, right? Like physical AND mental wellness?
      In any event, your comment is pointless and entirely irrelevant. The rest of us are here trying to learn about the real world.
