I reeaaally love this channel, but im gonna be honest: the way her thumbnails are designed does not catch the eye too much. I know it fits more of the aesthetic of her actual content, but lol i feel like the more popular the channel, the "brighter" and "livelier" your photography and design should be.. IDK. I'm just being honest, bc i always saw her videos recc'd to me and i always ignored it then bc it looked boring or like i thot it was just gonna be a basic slideshow. But thankfully i made the venture and sub'd later on :)
My foundation clumps, when I apply powder on top of it. When I don't set my foundation with powder, it looks so much better, especially if the foundation is water-based and really runny with a thin layer.

I should do a video on that! It's not actually oxidising - it's just drying to a different colour, like how some paints are different colours when dry and wet.

@@alessachoop8883 The foundation can take a while to properly dry (the foundation usually contains several different solvents that will evaporate at different rates), plus your oils will change the colour too! The pigments themselves won't oxidise in the sense of reacting with oxygen - the pigments in foundation are highly stable ochres that are often in old rocks, so they won't oxidise any further in the < 24 hours that they're on your face :)

Iron oxide (the main colour pigment used in foundations) is not going to oxidise any more in the space of a few hours on your face. Synthetic iron oxide comes in several different tones (yellow, red, brown and black) which are mixed together to create each shade. All foundations that dry have a drying shift, it's just more perceptible or less perceptible in some formulas. Putting your make-up on in a different light source to that which you will be viewing it in can cause it to appear to have changed colour. Compatibility with other products is likely to affect drying times.

I experience clumping also with regular skincare. With the sunscreen and the rest. Or in the evening with creams/ vit C after serums. To much serum? Even when it goes great after 20 min it starts So I should wait more between the layers. How to be sure the water goes in my skin rather then evaporate? Definitely have to watch again. That was such a great video! I think a lot of us understand the basics of oils and water not mixing, but none of us knew about phase and the technicalities. It was really interesting.
This explains why one of my favorite sunscreens (Minesol Oil Control) completely messes up my foundation and I always have to use another one (usually Anthelios from La Roche)

Loved this! A good rule of thumb I was taught by a group of makeup artists was to use only water-based skin prep and let it sink in for a few minutes. After that, whatever you use on top should be fine: water-based, silicone-based or oil-based, because the water has been absorbed/evaporated.

Thanks for this in love science so, I appreciate this video. I noticed that clumping happens when I layer skin care and most of my skin care is watery. If I don’t wait till it’s completely sinked in and then layer primer and foundation then clumping is gonna happen. Now I understand more in depth why clumping happens. I always wondered why makeup becomes clumpy even after careful application. Now I know how to prevent it from happening.

Hi Michelle, thank you for the video! I have a question... Why does face get darker than neck (or vice versa) even though we use sunscreen? Do oils cause discoloration or dullness? I've been recently trying to figure out why my face is darker than my rest of the body. My face is almost 2 shades darker. Almost red-brown kind of color. I've been using sunscreen since I'm a teenager. I re-apply sunscreen as much as I can. In my country, some people say that oil (mineral oil, essential oil or oil in some makeup products) might cause discoloration or dullness if you put it on your face in the morning then go outside. I can't find the exact word in English, but we say (油焼け、化粧焼け). Basically they say the oil oxidizes with UV rays and that causes discoloration or/and dullness. However, this is controversial topic so not all of experts believe that. I apply sunscreen anyway so I don't know if that is affecting to my skin. I'm in 30s now but I think there wasn't such a huge difference when I was in 20s. I used to use tretinoin but my face never turned red. I have a few hyper-pigmentation but I think the reason why my face is 2 shades darker is not just hyper pigmentation. Hmmm
@@palladio7476 I use tretinoin for sun spots, not for lines and wrinkles, so I use it with hydroquinone. As you may know, when we use it with hydroquinone, we should not continue to use them more than 3 months, so I stop using it after 3 months. I usually take a break for a year, then use it again if I want. Maybe if you use tretinoin only, you can use more than 3 months (not sure though) :)
Am I right to assume this is also the reason sunscreen sometimes pills up when you try to apply it? Also, I love how you talk slowly and precise in your videos. I'm a non native speaker and trying to follow someone's train of thought when they are speaking very quickly or with a strong accent/not clearly is much harder for me.

I'd love a video on layering skincare products and how long you should let each product absorb into the skin before adding another product. Also, whether certain products should not be layered together.
I don't see mine clumping but at the end of the day I do see more of it in my pores than anywhere else. I use a primer, liquid foundation, then powder foundation on top of that. I think I've said this before, but I REALLY want a video about the old wives' tale that not moisturizing leads to your skin being greasier. I've always personally found that to be untrue therefore I never moisturize.
I think she mentiones it before, but it is actually true-ish. If you don't put moisture into your skin, it will try to moisturize itself by producing more oil. If you're already oily, your skin can still be dehydrated on the inside, so lightweight hydration containing hyaluronic acid can hydrate oily skin and calm some (not all) oil production :)
This explains why I have never been able to wear a foundation I like. How can I discover which moisturizers go with which sunscreens and which foundations go with all that? I have even found that tinted sunscreens peel and clump on my skin, and I always wondered what was going on!
Informative video. But, but, but I CAN'T STAND silicone. If it's in the first six ingredients I cringe. For me using a concealer matching my skin tone works much better and I use less. Love your videos!!!

I don't tend to have this problem with my foundation, but I really do with my under eye concealer - looks great initially and then after a few hours it looks as though I flicked it on from a foot away! I'm going to experiment with using an oil underneath and a silicone primer and see if either fixes it, as I'm not sure what's in it!
Kate Rose If you go to the website for the concealer you are using you should be able to find the ingredients as you can with most products. If you purchased from Sephora or Ulta you can find ingredients on the product page.
now I understand why everytime I applied a specific sunscreen and applied power it balls up it is because the outerphase of the sunscreen repel with the outer phase of the powder
You forgot the most important ! Foundation is a suspension, a suspension of pigments. It is not necessarily an emulsion (ex : oil based foundation like a stick or a pot).
I didn't forget it :) I didn't bother mentioning it since emulsions make up the majority of the foundation market, and the fact that pigments are suspended in the formula isn't useful for understanding how to avoid foundation clumping from a consumer perspective.

Emulsion products (basically anything cloudy) do have inner and outer phases, but since there's a lot less stuff that sits on top of skin it doesn't really clump noticeably (apart from things like sunscreen, where ingredients do have to sit on top of skin).
Hello I love this video, I think it really helps to clear up the big confusion there is about why certain foundations may behave weirdly and so on. I'm a little bit confused about the foundation I like to use though. Here's the ingredient list, it appears that it's oil or butter based? So using oil based products under my foundation should help with clumping? It's generally because face skin is thinner and more exposed to the sun, even when wearing sunscreen.

With sunscreen it can be that, or it can be the sunscreen formula itself - sometimes the film formers don't work the way they should...

I'd love a video on layering skincare products and how long you should let each product absorb into the skin before adding another product. Also, whether certain products should not be layered together.

I don't see mine clumping but at the end of the day I do see more of it in my pores than anywhere else. I use a primer, liquid foundation, then powder foundation on top of that.
I think I've said this before, but I REALLY want a video about the old wives' tale that not moisturizing leads to your skin being greasier. I've always personally found that to be untrue therefore I never moisturize.
I think she mentiones it before, but it is actually true-ish. If you don't put moisture into your skin, it will try to moisturize itself by producing more oil. If you're already oily, your skin can still be dehydrated on the inside, so lightweight hydration containing hyaluronic acid can hydrate oily skin and calm some (not all) oil production :)

This explains why I have never been able to wear a foundation I like. How can I discover which moisturizers go with which sunscreens and which foundations go with all that? I have even found that tinted sunscreens peel and clump on my skin, and I always wondered what was going on!

Informative video. But, but, but I CAN'T STAND silicone. If it's in the first six ingredients I cringe. For me using a concealer matching my skin tone works much better and I use less. Love your videos!!!

I don't tend to have this problem with my foundation, but I really do with my under eye concealer - looks great initially and then after a few hours it looks as though I flicked it on from a foot away! I'm going to experiment with using an oil underneath and a silicone primer and see if either fixes it, as I'm not sure what's in it!
Kate Rose If you go to the website for the concealer you are using you should be able to find the ingredients as you can with most products. If you purchased from Sephora or Ulta you can find ingredients on the product page.

You forgot the most important ! Foundation is a suspension, a suspension of pigments.
It is not necessarily an emulsion (ex : oil based foundation like a stick or a pot).
I didn't forget it :) I didn't bother mentioning it since emulsions make up the majority of the foundation market, and the fact that pigments are suspended in the formula isn't useful for understanding how to avoid foundation clumping from a consumer perspective.

We don't generally see skincare when we apply it, but I always wonder if it is also clumping on my skin like my foundation does on top of sunscreen. Would love to learn more about this!
Emulsion products (basically anything cloudy) do have inner and outer phases, but since there's a lot less stuff that sits on top of skin it doesn't really clump noticeably (apart from things like sunscreen, where ingredients do have to sit on top of skin).

Hello I love this video, I think it really helps to clear up the big confusion there is about why certain foundations may behave weirdly and so on. I'm a little bit confused about the foundation I like to use though. Here's the ingredient list, it appears that it's oil or butter based? So using oil based products under my foundation should help with clumping?
