  • www.crosstrainingenduro.com Important update! Sidi quality has been dropping recently, see this update video: • Sleep-inducing random ...
    Which are the best enduro boots and enduro boots available for dirt riding today? Until recently Gaerne SG12 boots and the Sidi Crossfires and Gaerne SG12 were generally regarded as the top two boots, but Sidi quality control appears to slipped badly since most manufacturing moved to Romania. There are other quality boots being put out by others too: Fox Instinct, Alpinestar Tech 10, TCX Pro, Forma Predator etc.
    We've had a lot of questions about which are the best boots for enduro and dirt riding, and which boots I'm using. Lower leg injuries are very common, especially when guys wear cheap dirt bike boots. My first tip would be spend money for top quality boots. Boots and a good helmet are the two protective items you should put some money into... and I'm speaking from personal experience.

    So the best motocross boots or best enduro boots? The Italians make the good motorcyles, they make the good boots also. Generally the Gaerne SG12 and the Sidi Crossfire boots have been seen as the top two. And yes it's pronounced, 'Garnay', not Gern or Gay-urn as most of us say. But there are Sidi Crossfire problems now.
    There are other good boots at a similar price, but overall the Gaerne SG12 boots stand out in user reviews based on comfort, protection, longevity, sole wear and how easy they are to walk in.
    Personally I used to opt for the Sidi Crossfire 2 because they were about on par with the Gaernes and are usually about $100 cheaper. Yes I'm a tight arse even when it comes to the important stuff. But now they ain't so good.
    So why spend a lot of money on the Gaerne SG12? A lot of guys like cheaper boots because they are more flexible, but this is because they have less protection. Sidis and Gaernes are well known for not needing any breaking in - the are comfortable immediately, still let you do gear changes and apply rear brake, and are easy to walk in. But you get full protection at the same time.
    Here's a comparison with a cheap boot, the Scot 250. The Sidi Crossfire is much better in so many ways, even if recent ones deteriorate quickly.
    Similar to helmets, you must make sure a boot is comfortable first. Too many guys buy online then find out it does really fit. Support your local bike shop, try them on there and buy them there too.
    A lot of guys want their boots to be waterproof. No manufacturer will guarantee this of course. A more expensive boot will stay waterproof longer, but it's only a matter of time. My Sidis were waterproof for about three months, then over time have allowed more and more water in.
    A lot of guys use the smaller more comfortable adventure boots for adventure riding or easy trail riding, but my view is it's still worth having maximum protection. If you pay more for good boots like the Gaerne SG12 or Sidi Crossfire you will still have the comfort.
    We are lucky to have dedicated motorbike boots we can afford. I like to do a little reality check from time to time, and you might remember this Malaysian rider and his bike from an earlier video.
    What about sole repairs? If you get this done professionally, make sure it's a shoe shop who does motorcross boots regularly and knows what they are doing. Your average shoe repair shop probably won't get it right. What about do it yourself? If a boot sole is just starting to peel away, you can simply put in some self tapping screws to halt this.
    What about gluing a new sole on yourself? It's best to let the professionals at it, but if you are short on cash like me, use a six inch grinder to clean and roughen the bottom of the boot and the new sole. Use a heat gun to warm up both surfaces, then apply a good glue like Sikaflex marine. I've tried this before years ago and the sole eventually peeled off, so this time I've doubled up with a pile of screws. Dodgy dodgy work, but then that's nothing new for me.
    Just for an experiment, I did try to repair the cheap Scott boots but the soles both peeled off again within two rides, which confirmed there's no point repairing those cheaper boots. No problems though with Gaerne SG12 or Sidi Crossfire.

    HOW DO THE BRANDS COMPARE? 🤔 I've collected hundreds of owner reports. The approximate figures so far? Gaerne 97% positive. Forma 75% positive. Sidi/Alpinestar 50% positive. Fox 35% positive.
    IMPORTANT UPDATE: Sidi Crossfire quality appears to have dropped quite drastically in the past year or two. This is based not only on rider feedback but from an industry source who said the national distributor is at a loss to explain why there are so many complaints and returns lately. 😥

    Using Sidi Crossfire 2 for a year already and they were very good from the beginning. Once in a while I clean them and oil with leather grease. There is one problem though - the leather gets rubbed and surface damaged by the plastic parts on a few spots.

    I love my Fox instincts. I also like my gaerne s12's but when I want the best feel for the bike like in a race or technical riding, the fox instincts are awesome. Bit more feed back in the toes but the gaernes certainly have more protection there which is why they don't quite give me as much brake control.

    I had a pair of Scott 450's wear out after 50 rides or so, the sole started chunking and flopping and the buckles never would stay fastened.
    I put out the money for a pair of alpinestar Tech 7's tee recently and I have been happy ever since then. The buckle system works great even when dirty, the boots are strong and have even helped my confidence staying on the pegs.
    Quality Boots are a must

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +Brett Schoener totally agree on the quality brett. those scott 250 boots were such a disappointment and bad value for only 50 rides. :( plus not having good protection most of that time either, they were stiff when new but bent like soggy pasta once they were worn in.

    Most people won't wear them for lack of ankle support, but the Gaerne oiled brown trials boot has been my choice for years now. They are waterproof and have tread on the sole for when you're off the bike and need foot traction. I just purchased the updated version with Gortex. They seem to be very good so far.

    The Sidi Crossfires were my first top notch boot and they have been absolutely awesome. Coming off of Astars Tech3's it took a few rides to get used to the stiffer plastic body of the boot but once I got used to it I love them. And there's no tougher toe box on a boot than the Crossfires.

    I've been using the alpine stars tech 7 for almost a year now and love them. They are very comfy and are easy to get on and off. I also have a pair of old tech 3's and the difference is night and day. The tech 7 is So much more comfortable and are much easier to get on and off. I ride all sorts of woods and trails with gravel roads and gravel pits mixed in and find the protection so great. The soul on them is replaceable but only the centre part where the foot peg is. Overall great books

    I got super lucky a couple years ago and was able to pick up a pair of SIDI Stingers (their top end youth boot) on sale for half the regular price. These boots are solid, made with the same materials as the Crossfire series and similar level of protection minus one buckle. They are a great option for women as they come in sizes that would fit most women's feet.
    What I love about them is that when the time comes all the parts are replaceable so if anything wears out or breaks I can replace as needed. My only complaint is that the ankle hinge is really squeaky when walking around so I can't sneak up on anyone.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  3 роки тому +2

      Yes the dreaded ankle squeak if you have that ankle hinge! Sometimes I squirt a bit of WD40 in there and it stops the noise for a ride or two.

    I just purchased a pair of SG12's. I'm pleased with them. As you stated, absolutely no break in time required. Coming from Tech 8's which lasted me for about 6 years. Surprisingly they may just now be broken in. I was tired of pulling my spleen muscles trying to put them on every ride. In comparison, the SG12's are so very comfortable. They also have a slightly more pointed toe that allows easier insertion into the gear selector area. Something that I found strange to even notice.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +Rob Cash i think the problem with cheaper boots is that as they 'wear in' they are often giving you less protection as they are just becoming more flexible... whereas the top shelf boots are comfy from the start, and the high level of protection doesn't drop off. at 300 rides mine feel just almost as good on those flex tests as when brand new.

    • @motocash
      @motocash 8 років тому +1

      +CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES At the time I thought the Tech 8's were a premium boot. I had come from Tech 6's and thought the insert was a nice feature since I ride in very wet muddy conditions. You can dry the insert quickly and your foot will stay dry even when put back into a wet boot. I would estimate that the protection was very good as I accidentally kicked a rock at 40 mph and other than my heel hitting my ass at nearly that speed I did not break my leg. The buckles on the Crossfire and SG12 are light years better than any of the A-star offerings. As for the wet issue, now that I wear over the boot pants, water is a little less of an issue as it tends to shed rather than funnel into by boot.

    I couldn't afford the G12, I ended up getting some alpinestar tech5s. I'm also on a quad! so not as important as if I was on 2 wheels. but the tech5s are actually real good so far. very stiff tho. after about 25 hrs on em I can't hardly shift still lol. but I'm impressed with the comfort and protection these boots provide. and they seem to stay rather water proof too. only time I get water in my boots is when it goes into the boot from the top of the boot. but I can be standing in mud or water and my feet will b dry

    Love the Sidi - I own the Alpine Stars Tech 3 (cheapest available). They have been beating up trails and me for 5 years now. They are horrible ridged and the buckles are a chore however they do the job and have protected my lovely lower half for the interim. I just recently tried on the Sidi and Gonorrheas, and it's amazing what a high quality boot feels like. Movement is actually possible in a boot. Personally, the Sidi was my choice when it came to movement and feeling.

    • @crosstrainingenduro

      +Aaron Maz the tech 3 had a great reputation if you go back far enough but it seems to now be a budget boot from what i read. if i had to i would just stop riding for a month or two so i could save the money for good boots when it's time to get a new set.

    SIDI Crossfires SRS(sole replacement system) are good had them for 3 or 4 years now and everything from buckles to the sole is all serviceable and replaceable at home with just a few basic tools which you would have with a bike anyway and the thing i loved most about them was they felt natural from the moment i put them on unlike many other boots that you need to spend 2 to 5 hours walking around in to break them in and make them flexible enough to ride

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +andreweasty i've heard lots of mixed reviews on the SRS version but mostly good, andrew. i went with the standard sidis though, as the cost of replacing the soles works to be about the same as the SRS version.

      i went with the srs due to the local bike shop being out of stock of the regular crossfires and not wanting to wait 2 weeks to order a pair in and I'm pretty happy i went with them as i just undo the screws and screw the new one back on but i am still yet to need to do that

    If you need to make some repairs to your boots, peeling soles, etc., there is nothing tougher than 3M 5200 marine adhesive, they make it in black and white. I've used it many times and it saves the day. Clean the surfaces well and then keep the pressure on for a couple days, it takes time to set but once dried it is pretty much bullet proof. Not cheap but way cheaper than new boots.

  • @markmtbrider

    after multiple knee operations, i went back to the hiking boot route. the difference of bike feel and mobility is night and day compared to the heavy mx alpinestars i had before. paddling up hills, and getting foot off the pegs for a quick save is much easier. i am going to try to get some protection back with an adventure boot, but i say wear the lightest boot you feel comfortable with for how and where you are riding. your knees will thank you.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +markmtbrider it can be tricky to find a balance between all those factors hey mark? i went on easy dirt ride in my trials boots once and it was great to have more 'feel' of the pegs, the light weight, so much ankle flexibility etc. and yet there were two times the light construction of the boot meant feeling the pain too and i could sense how vulnerable my foot was. a hinged boot makes a big difference, the new forma terrain boot could be worth looking at... the cheapest hinged boot available and it's lighter and more flexible than the top boots.

    Hi guys.
    I agree with everything Barri said, the Master.
    I have had the Sidi Flex Force, Crossfire1 and Crossfire2.
    Still use the first ones to easy rides with an elderly bike trail.
    Previously i hava Acerbis Boots. Good an cheap, but they were far from the Sidi, i think
    Without any doubt the best investment we can make: good boots and good helmet.
    I they are comfortable and sure... we always weared them...!
    Balance between comfort and safety they have the Sidi.
    And with parts for replace.
    In my case, I am thin foot and shin and are well suited to my way.
    There are other good boots, in that order, maybe
    Gaerne, Fox, Alpinestars, Form ...
    But for me the Sidi ... Simply The Best.
    Best Regards form Spain...!

      They wouldn't pass your flexibility test. Plain leather inside/outside, no plastic, have become so flexible at the ankle level that they can't stand up straight by themselves. +Simon Eldridge those moulded soles can be okay simon, as long as glue doesn't give way too early and your footpegs don't rip the soles to shreds too quickly. i'm running those fastway pegs with the low cleats now so that the soles should last the lifetime of the boot from now on. :)

      This was true many years ago when they were Italian made boots, Claudio, but the number of complaints has definitely increased since they moved production to Thailand and Croatia. I will release a video about this soon. Feedback indicates that Gaerne have the least problems and they are the only Italian brand that still makes all their boots in Italy. All other 'Italian' brands now make boots in cheaper countries (although Sidi still does Crossfire SRS boots in Italy, but not their Crossfire TA boots).

    Hey Barry, do you think enduro soles might make me more prone to knee sprains due to the tread locking up on the footpegs? I fell off my bike sideways at slow speed last spring and re-sprained a very old knee injury...not sure exactly what caused the sprain but it seemed at the time that that as I fell to the left, my right foot got a bit caught up on the peg and caused my knee to overextend one of the knee ligaments. I was wearing enduro boots. I've never used the smooth-soled MX boots, so maybe they are simply not an option for enduro riding and more likely to cause other injuries due to lack of grip??? In any event I'll be using a knee brace next riding season.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  4 роки тому +1

      interesting question! i've always preferred good grip from footpegs as a foot has slipped off sometimes by mistake. if you've seen our 'dismount instead of crash' vid, i know the pro riders just jump off the bike which prevents that kind of thing. but i don't have the quick reflexes nowadays to always do that.

    nice video ! i've got the crossfire 2, and i think they are good but they have a big drawback : they sometimes stay blocked on the footpeg when you have to put a foot near the bike, when you are in a narrow passage, it's their drawback. I love the big protectives, but they should improve them, not them to stay blocked on the footpeg. Did you ever have this problem ?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +hard enduro montoncel great to get all this feedback. i've had no issue with getting blocked on the peg so far... and there's definitely a lot of rider variation involved e.g. some will say a specific boot makes gear changes easier, others say it makes it harder.

    • @hardenduromontoncel1078
      @hardenduromontoncel1078 8 років тому +1

      oh ok, maybe it's because you have the crossfire 1, the ankle protective doesn't overtake like on the 2.
      For the gear changement, in my opinion, it's the size of the boot compare to your gear shifter setting wich can do that. But for sure, there are a lot of rider variations.

    I own 2 pair of the Sidi Crossfire 2 SRS and one pair of SG-11
    The Gaerne has a big toe box, easy to flex your toes. First ride it took me 3 hours before I even thought about my feet. The Sidi is a narrow toe box, so you might need to size up. I must say I cannot pick between the two brands because they are both A+.
    Replacing the SRS soles should be done sober. It is also advised to wear gloves, use a plier and screwdriver, because it's nasty work! Keep kids with sensitive ears away....
    I have drilled holes in the SG-11 so it drains water, because there is NO way to stop water from coming in when the conditions are very wet. I have made mesh soles out of bathmats as well, and these are my designated swamp boots now. I have yet to take the Sidi into the water, but suspect that they too will be great at drinking water.... And once water comes into a boot, it ain't coming out. (unless you've drilled holes)
    I had the Sidi Rain Dual Sport (very nice boot for a adv rider, maybe even a dual sporter), but if riding hard enduro, there is NOT enough toe protection, and you WILL break toes. I broke one, and sprained another before selling and getting the Gaerne SG-11.
    These boots are expensive. But, if you do your homework and look around, you can save quite a bit.

      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +Dagster Blaster good info there, dagster blaster. i agree, you can get the top boots very cheaply if you shop around. and they are probably cheaper in the long run, 300 rides in my sidis and with a new sole who knows how many more? the mythical waterproof boot is a hit and miss affair... my old oxtar motocross boots were completely waterproof for an entire year! very lucky there i suspect.

    Never had a buckle let go, soles are still looking good but some cosmetic signs of wear are showing. I keep them clean and for the first few years I wore over boot pants.

    I've had the Crossfires, SG12 and TCX Comps. I'd have to say the biggest issue is the steel toe caps that get kicked off in the rocky terrain we ride. The TCX and Crossfires are the worst for this. For me, the Crossfires are the most comfortable and the lightest whilst also offering the best protection. The SG12, are a close second, with the TCX some way behind. In terms of durability, I pretty much destroyed the Crossfires in a year and I'll probably have done the same to the SG12 in about the same time. It's not the soles, but the entire boot that just gets shanked in the rocks we ride. I'll probably go Crossfires with my next boot or possibly the new TCX comp boots with the Forma Terrains also getting a look in. I still feel that most offroad boots are MX biased and have the following problems in hard enduro:
    1. very little grip from the flat soles
    2. toe caps that get kicked off or destroyed quickly
    3. weight as most good boots come in at around 4.5 kilos
    There is definitely a gap in the market for a tough as nails enduro boot that could address these concerns

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +Robert Moore great feedback robert. that must be some tough riding to wreck good boots within a year, i'm obviously not trying hard enough... :) an enduro-specific boot would be good. i'm thinking of looking at the formas next time around, the italians seem to really know their stuff but they are relatively new and there isn't that depth of user feedback on them yet.

    I have tiny feet and couldn't find adult boots my size so I had to go with the kids ONEAL MX boots. They are extremely rigid! Especially the foot side, I can't bend the boot at all (not that I am very strong). I had a very lame drop at full stop trying to turn to park after a long tiring and boring highway stretch. My foot got crushed by the weight of the motorbike, 4 bones fractured 5 times with ligament damages, metal plates and all of that things. I was on my own so I got transported to the nearest hospital by ambulance and the paramedic told me that because the boot was so stiff it held my foot between the ground and bike, and if I had softer boots my foot would possibly have been able to slip though and not break. I still have several weeks of immobilisation and rehab before I can ride again :'( but now I'm wondering if I should get new boots. Any advice? Especially for child size feet....

      +Nickus this vid showed some basic tests you could apply to boots to see which give the best protection, although cheap boots could start flexing a lot within a few months....
      i've done a vid about the qualities to look for in a good helmet so could check the cheap ones for these criteria: ua-cam.com/video/_rsaxIKfNoE/v-deo.html

    Wasp nipples? Never seen those! I recently purchased the cheapest possible offering in protective foot gear. They're collecting dust on the shelf. I'm afraid to wear them for fear I'll have to learn how to ride all over again.

      Twistygrip it'll only take a couple times of riding with good boots before that feel is "normal"... and then riding in anything else will make you feel like your feet are about to break off... it's amazing how much more you can use your legs when they're properly protected and armored and not worried about bumping and scraping them on the bike and terrain...

      +tommy magner123 i've never broken any tommy. worst thing that's happened is now i've done 350+rides in them occasionally a buckle might come undone. great boots, will just buy another set probably, if and when these wear out.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +Erik Maučec it depends how much flex there is as the boot gets older too erik. you generally just get what you pay for with boots. the cheap ones will usually do a reasonable job of protecting you....

    SIDI's don't need breaking in? My x-treme SRS' are only starting to be comfortable after 20hrs.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +jonno85uk i wasn't even aware of that model jonno. bummer to hear on the breaking, everyone raves about the immediate comfort with crossfires, myself included. the website doesn't give any info, what's the intended application with this extreme version?

    • @jonnoMoto
      @jonnoMoto 8 років тому +1

      I can't quite remember but it's supposed to be a more enduro based boot. Not quite as tall and heavy as the crossfires but same construction and most importantly, comes with SRS. I used to have A-stars and the buckles were shite compared to these SIDIs'. They're ok now, I can walk ok once I take my boots off

    do you ever try Alpinestar? I think that Gaerne; Sidi and Alpine rules.
    Them you may also consider Fox
    And after that you have all the rest ....:-)

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +1

      +Andre Azevedo years ago the alpinestars were seen as a top boot, but i think they have become cheaper over the years... the lower models get quite a few complaints now. i'm not sure about the top model though, it does still seem to get good reviews most of the time.

    • @aclas1969
      @aclas1969 8 років тому +1

      I always have them. I also have Gaerne and they have a stronger construction. But Tech 7, enduro8 and Tech 10 até very good products. I think they are at the same level. Yet mi next boots will be Sidi. They look and feel smaler outside with the same level of protrction. And they are beutifull. :-)

    I have been riding enduro for a while, always ride in tramping boots. The main injuries I have had is left and right scaphoids so I would err to the get some wrist protection side. Boots are cumbersome and affect riding balance, no matter how expensive they are.

    • @NCER999
      @NCER999 7 років тому +2

      Chris Dealny here's my advice based on anecdotal evidence. Caught a hidden rock on outside corner, toe cap twisted under the peg. Tore good quality motorbike boots in half. Ligament and muscle damage was all I scored. Most likely I would lost my foot if wearing tramping boots.

    • @anaphylastiks
      @anaphylastiks 7 років тому

      Tim Newman That's a good point, but I hardly ever have my feet anywhere near the footpegs. Quality tramping boots have good grip for muddy situations riding boots just do not. Also quality tramping boots are more sturdy around the ankle area than many riding boots.

    • @toadamine
      @toadamine 7 років тому +1

      Chris Dealny that's why all the pro riders use Tramping boots, anything else hinders their abilities... 🤔🙄😂

    • @anaphylastiks

      toadamine look man I know riding boots are good. I just feel more comfortable in tramping boots. I normally wear skate shoes.

    • @NCER999
      @NCER999 7 років тому +2

      "I hardly ever have my feet anywhere near the footpegs" where do you put your feet?!?... hate to say it but based on most stuff you've said in your comments you have no idea about anything: good grip in mud - that's what tyres are for. Walking boots are more sturdy - bullshit. Skate shoes - WTF. I'm guessing you ride a pitbike or something.

    Alpinestars Tech10's are the best. The other boots in this video are good, but once you try Tech10's you'll find the competition are bulky, cumbersome and overall inferior.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 років тому +2

      +asdf898 it's all very subjective and i don't think any boot can be claimed to be the best out of all of them. for example, in plenty of threads there are guys saying they'd take the gaerne SG12 over the tech 10: www.vitalmx.com/forums/Moto-Related,20/sg12-vs-tech-10s,1266269 i think it all comes down to personal preference and which fits better, and how lucky you are with the quality control the day your boots came out of the factory. :)

      I tried on the Tech 10, SG11, and SG12 at the dealership, ended up with the SG11. The alpinestars weren't as comfortable. I wear the SG11 in the dirt and Alpinestar Tucans for a dual sport boot now, works good for me.

    • @crosstrainingenduro

      +mhbernheim goldentyre GT523 rocky. hard compound for good longevity but of course this makes it trickier in those conditions.
