The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse: War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death
Yeah ive always wondered why he used time as one of the horsemen. Was that just a mistake?
@@deanmadden123 If you read the book of revelation it's a little unclear on the actual names of the four horsemen. Especially depending on the translation. It actually only names Death. "The Lamb broke the fourth seal and I heard the voice (the horsemen) say: Come. I looked and Behold, a pale horse: and he who sat upon it's name was Death, and Hades (the Greek god of hell) was fallowing behind him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to Kill with War, Pestilence, and Conquest." Revelation 6:7-8
@@deanmadden123 If you think about it, time means death as well.
@@mattvideoeditor right but he already said death. I always thought that war was a horseman.
that was the last Mad Max movie hehe
The song is about the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse, it’s a biblical reference, loving your metal journey!!
Not sure how this song wasn't obvious by the title. I'm not religious and I've heard of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse.
They said Time as the first horsemen but to me the 4 horsemen are War, Famine, Pestilence & Death.
@@John57945 Same here. It was clearly War's day off so they got in a part-Time-r.......
@@John57945 I know right, so bloody straight forward

Protect this woman at all cost💯💯
I love her.
These guys were late teens early 20s when this album was made. Epic masterpiece.
...written by Dave Mustaine 😆
This and a few others. She's right in saying it sounds different, cuz this album was thrash metal. Probably my favorite. Love the medieval, whimsical story telling throughout.
Yeah, this album is completely different from all their other music. Ride the Lightning is markedly different, then Puppets and Justice are fairly similar. The Black Album and all subsequent work is so "meh" compared to the first 4.
“Pestilence” = Contagious deadly disease. The word is used by Method Man in the 1997 Wu-Tang Clan song “Triumph.” His is the second verse.
👐
Well done
Well put. 🤘
Cv
Indeed. My favorite Wu-tang song. . Method Man is the shit.... Rip ODB.
I like how Hetfield's rhythm-guitar playing in this song sounds like a horse's hoofs galloping.
Thank Dave Mustaine for that
Bass drums too
@@SkribbalOfficial Actually its all Hetfield. Mustaines version of this song is complete trash. James realized how the guitar sounded like galloping hooves so he slowed it down and rewrote the lyrics
@@SkribbalOfficial um no, James slowing it down was what made it sound so good. So you can thank just James for that :)
@@anneeeev made the song way better imo i still like mechanix but not as much
The whole album- A masterful debut
Next “The Frayed Ends of Sanity” and “Dyers Eve”.

I keep thinking they (*Lex for the solo) would love BLACKENED!!!
Dyers Eve for sure!!!
Great reaction guys. Cliff’s bass almost….bounces in this. He was so damn good. RIP.
Its been mentioned about who the four horsemen are. James Hetfield, the lead singer, and Dave Mustaine, were raised Christian. Many of Metallica's songs are based upon Bible stories. Not always entirely accurate and not pushing his faith, or lack of, upon the listener. They seem to gravitate towards the darker Bible stories. Their best Biblical song is "Creeping Death". That is the story of the Jewish Passover.
Lex, if you liked The Four Horsemen, you gonna love Creeping Death :)
@@garyhutchins4481 Amen
They did creeping death. Check out their reaction
@@adamhelmick4544 Ah - so they did.
And I was right, she did !
@@garyhutchins4481 yeah.. Lex seems to gravitate to the thrash metal. Its great watching her grow into a little mdtalhead
This was my introduction to Metallica in 1984. We had a weekly 3 hour "Friday Metal Night" show on the local radio station where new metal would be played . To this day still my all-time favorite Metallica song. There was nothing like this on the metal scene until that point. The precision riffs were just mind blowing.
I remember that show on the radio, it came on 88.5 where I’m from, just can’t remember the name of the show
I just love watching Lex light up when the groove hits her. Brad just gets a kick out of her. Love you both going on the metal journey. Lex has to know by now she is a Metal Goddess
The reason this "sounds different" is because this is one of the Mustaine songs. The breakdown interlude that is slower is nothing but Sweet Home Alabama by Skynyrd.
Megadeth also recorded this but its titled Mechanix. Its faster and more aggressive and the lyrics are different.
In the left hand you have a slower and more composed song about the apocalypse.... in the right hand, you have a faster, more technical song about a garage attendant who can't keep it in his pants. It's a tie.
@@mfree80286 I think it's great we have both versions and I like them equally. It's all about what mood I'm in.
Its old!! But,holy crap! Still blows my mind how ingenious their lyrics were! Nobody touches the talent they had, even today!
...and they were all just teens at the time. 🤯
@@billdecat855 came to say the same thing
Let’s thank Dave Mustaine for bringing that sound early into Metallica
Medieval and whimsical storytelling. Such a cool album!
If your familiar with Dave Mustaine's guitar work, you can definitely tell the riffs that he wrote. Mustaine is a riff master and any of the funky sounding riffs are signature Mustaine.
I truly believe Fave had huge influence on the first 3 album's 😈🤘
@@jerrykeck1494 he had nothing to do with the third album, and wrote on half of the second album.
There's also the album credits with Mustaine as the writer. ;)
And there's Mechanix ua-cam.com/video/nEsmpOeTzjk/v-deo.html
@@nicedreams6010 well, Dave's version 😆😅😂🤣total 🖕of course he could have made an amazing song. Instead he made an amazing album for each of they're releases
@@frankcastle1221 Dave & Cliff were main composers and responsible for the thrash speed metal sound that made them unique. Too many riffs and parts of Solo's were definitely from Dave
You called it girl! I dig that you know it was old Metallica.....respect when you would go out to clubs to watch local bands.....this was a must.....
Five magics by megadeth.
only original version :D 🥰
Marty Friedman is GOD
Isnt it called Mechanix?
No mention in the fact that Dave Mustaine has credit to this song? He did this song in Megadeth called Mechanix
When Metallica first recorded this it was also called The Mechanix, I have the original vinyl somewhere...
Mechanix is the original...when Dave mustaine left Metallica reworked the song and it became 4 horsemen and when mustaine made megadeth he kept the original song and released on megadeth record
@@chef78214 and mechanix sucks compared to the four horsemen. Listen to them both back to back, especially the guitar solo. The reworked song- the four horsemen, is way better!
@@martymaiden8499 dont think the post was about what song is better. I think is simply to credit Mustaine and the first version of the song.
@@martymaiden8499 No, Metallica is just more refined. Megadeth were much nastier. You're not a thrash fan, so I don't expect you to get it. They made the black album for people like you - the uninteresting majority.
@ 9:57... that cable drop that Cliff does has always been a staple of this tune. Amazing addition to an already cool tune.
Man, i cant wait for the moment that Lex reacts to some Death songs...like Crystal Mountain or Flesh and the power it holds.
The Philosopher
Woah, Lex hearing Death would be interesting. I have not really even thought about how they'd react to Chuck and the boys, but now that you mentioned it, I'm also really looking forward to hearing and seeing that. I'm sure Brad wouldn't dig it at all, but Lex might like the groove and intricate guitar work, in addition to their signature vocals.
Don't threaten me with a good time!!
This is Metallicas debut released 38 years ago. I'm 40 so I was 2. This is actually the very 1st straight up Thrash Metal album ever made. 😃😃
I was maybe 6 years old! hha. great music! I'm 46 now!
maybe u missed venom welcome to hell from 1981
James wanted to call this album...metal up your ass...but the record label wouldn't let him
Then maybe you like Megadeths - mechanix? 💩
In 1883 this album didn’t just kick open door, it destroyed the whole house! Bang that head that does not bang!
Yeah I remembered when this album came out in 1883, we were jamming it out in the saloon almost every weekend getting hammered
Yeah 1883.....what a year that was. Me and my brothers Wyatt and Virgil were riding through a little town called Deadwood,we heard this song a beltin out of the gem saloon and goddamn our horse's damn nearly bolted from the shock.
Yeah man, this song is what got me past that while Civil War thing that went on a few years before
I genuinely love Lex's reactions to metal songs and much she enjoys them!
I love watching Lex, she is like a little kid walking into Disneyland for the first time every time she covers a good song. Always so bubbly, smiley, and bouncy. She would be the first guest on my list to any party because I know she would make it that much more fun just by being there.
A lot of metal uses biblical and religious literature.
The four horsemen of the apocalypse from the book of revelation, the 4 riders appear on the earth to bring about the "end times".
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Horsemen_of_the_Apocalypse
There are varying interpretations of the names of the riders, in the song Metallica chose:
Rider 1: Time, Taking it's toll on you...
Rider 2: Famine (Hunger)
Rider 3: Pestilence (Means Plague or Sickness)
Rider 4: Death (X)
Also just for fun, Metallica has often referred to themselves as the 4 horsemen (at least in the early days), or been referred to by fans/media.
Thanks for saving me the time to type this!
"Genre Fluid?" I love that shirt. Excellent play on words.
And yes, this is very old Metallica. It's from their first album "Kill 'em All."
This was when Metallica was still "scooping the mids". Love this way more than anything they did after Master Of Puppets.
Justice and The Black Album are both better than Kill ‘Em All
@@thiccboi4228fuuuuuuu no 😂
I love the drum beat on this song. Especially if you turn up the bass levels. The kick drums sound like galloping horses.
Loving your channel and weekly live streams! You're way more entertaining than most stuff on TV. You just reacted to what might be my favorite Metallica song so thank you. Hard to choose from so many killer tracks. One gem you haven't done yet (just checked!) is 'Orion', which is an instrumental and an all-time fan favorite.
You guys are great and glad to have more metal heads among us, love you guus
My favorite part of X-Men apocalypse when angel gets his wings.
This was their first album ! It was supposed to be called Metal up your ass but the record lables said no so they came up with kill'em all pertaining to the record lables.
When you're ready to step back in time, take us back to the late 70's overseas to Ireland! A friend introduced me to the music and I didn't pay it much mind then. I love it now of course. The band - Thin Lizzy! Their bass guitarist and lead vocalist was Phil Lynott. Hopefully you'll watch their video that goes along with the song. Best songs would have to be ..... JAILBREAK, The Boys are Back in Town, and Dancing in the Moonlight. My personal fav is The Boys are Back in Town so maybe react to that one first. Jailbreak is rowdy and Moonlight is pretty mellow.
Yep, Thin Lizzy was awesome (and tragic)!
Like Thunder and Lightning, God Damn, it's so Exciting
Didn't Metallica cover Thin Lizzy on Garage Days?

They have reacted to Bellz already, unfortunately not to this version tho.
By the way: Metallica did concerts as "The Four Horsemen" (announced band name) in small clubs in the 80s and early 90s. For sure a nice surprise for some people who went their not knowing about this ...
1:29 shes right, its one of their first songs, they were like 17,19 years old, also Dave Mustaine(Megadetg) wrote many of the songs in this album including this song
Song credits for 4
Yes this was a very young Metallica. Great reaction as always. 💗
Most of them were 19 years old. Cliff was a little older
The song is about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (from the bible) - time, famine, pestilence, death. While the song was originally written by Dave Mustaine, the lyrics were re-written by James Hetfield after they fired Mustaine.
This is the first time in my life I've actually been able to witness the birth and growth of a metal head. It's truly a wonderful thing.
Awesome! Lex, you just makes these videos a joy. The way you react to the sounds, the expressions, the way you explain what you are feeling, the way you sing it :D :D And then Brad is the perfect contrast and balance, so cool. You guys make a great couple. From man to man: you hit the jackpot Brad :) Love your channel and almost everything you been reacting to. Keep up the great vids guys, peace.
Lex, love the enthusiasm you have for metal especially Metallica. This is such an iconic song and brought many of us to be life long Metallica fans. IMO, the break at 3:42 is the most iconic break in metal music. Such a clean transition into a beautiful melodic riff. Just genius.
One of my favorite Metallica songs. And my favorite album too, Kill ‘Em All. I just love how raw it is and it’s pure metal. And James’s voice is awesome in this album especially
Exactly. Not my favorite from that album, but still amazing.
Love that.....how you brought that up I don’t know but so glad you are into this😁🤘🤘🤘
You guys got me cracking up! The referring to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse!

Good to see you rockin out with Lex my boy I love it stay safe everyone
You guys make such a great couple, really compliment each other. Another fun reaction. Cheers.
You guys should react to "Mechanix" by Megadeth. Take a look at that after this reaction.
I was looking for this, and I second this.
This
Bey shed like Mechanix better
Mechanix is complete trash. Dave was not a very good lyricist in his earlier days
I watch all your reactions. What I think Lex likes the most about the metal bands, with guitarist with the 'flair' she loves, is the brain tickle it obviously gives her. Sometimes I think she is experiencing a drug type of feeling. Euphoria or something.
Absolutely makes me love my metal even more seeing it through eyes like these.
Yo, huge fans of you guys! Love your Tom vids... when you paused it right after he went through the four horsemen and asked what the four horsemen were, I WAS FLOORED!!! REALLY FLOORED. Not to make too much fun, I really love you guys but, wow, that was suprising.
Sept 2-3 1983... seeing Metallica for the first time at the Keystone Berkley, and The Stone San Francisco.... opened with Hit the Lights, and then followed with The Four Horseman. wow... good times!!! Their energy blew my mind.
This is the song Dave Mustaine (megadeth) says they use some of his riffs and music on without his permission.
You can definitely hear one part that sounds like a Dave riff
Even though Mustaine didn’t play on “Kill Em All” he has writing credits on multiple songs including this one; he gets paid every time someone streams the song or buys the album. Not sure about the ‘without his permission’ thing, but I bet he likes cashing those checks.
One of my faves. The solos are epic.
I love the vommentabout finding their sound.as a musician I often struggled with what my particular brand of noise was.it takes a few years of writing music to figure out your strengths and use them
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse! Love that you're so engaged in the song!❤ I LOVE early Metallica!
So glad you guys chose this song. Amazing album. Prime Metallica! You have to check out "Seek & Destroy"
This song is so much faster live. its crazy how much different the feel is live.
I love watching the live performance from Cliff Em All! 🎸🤘🏼🐎
It's even faster when you hear the real version, Mechanix from Megadeth
Mechanix is so good.
They also cut out that entire middle part
@@Tim_BoSlice Mechanix is trash dude. Lyrics are shit.
11:20 exactly . also the gallop was originally to sound like a car engine when this song was called the mechanix . nice catch about the car peeling out .
This song has very strong Black Sabbath influences. There's the heavy main part of the song (think Children of the Grave riff but Symptom of the Universe structure), and then the calmer softer B-part (like in Symptom of the Universe, Killing Yourself to Live etc). There are also the "yeah yeahs", which is soooo Ozzy. There's middle of the song solo and the ending solo, which Tony Iommi also loves.
I've heard this song too many times, and I forget how great it is when in the middle of the song the riff goes sideways for a bit, and then Lars drops in with the beat and it all it all fits so tight. This fucking song is genius.
Still my favourite Metallic album, perhaps just because it was just such a seminal moment when it came out but it is the only one In listen to on a regular basis. Don't think I've listened to any others in 20 years.
One of the best versions of this song is on the Cliffem All tribute video, performed live 1985 at the Metal Hammer Fest in Germany,Cliffs head banging is just unreal.
I found your videos and only watch them now to hate how much you guys don't know about anything...keep up the good work!

Now yall listening to my Fav Metallica album. I was wondering if you would get to their really heavy stuff.
i have been ignorant. when i first started following you reactions i felt like you, brad, was an emotionless dongle. but i have come to realize you just got poker face. and your input is amazingly insightful.
All the above!! Love you guys!💙
You guys really need to listen Dave Mustaine version. Megadeth - The Mechanix !!!
Pestilence would be swarms of locusts/plant eating bugs “coming out of nowhere” and eating all the crops and oxygen producing plants. This song is about the biblical apocalypse.
And if you want Metallica’s vocals to grow on you check out something from the S&M show in 99. Preferably “Bleeding Me” or “Hero Of the Day” for a much different (but just as badass & awesome) side of Metallica.
Pestilence means plague, disease, or sickness. You might be confused because of the common idiom "Plagues of Locusts", as in being plagued by swarming locusts. But pestilence itself means disease.

KILL 'EM ALL - the album that started it all! "No Remorse" released '82 (radio underground hooked me) definitely worth reacting to the rest of the album.
Man, Lex looks so happy when she's listening to Metallica. I never really noticed before Lex pointed out the riff, but it kind of sounds like it's imitating horses galloping. You two should try out some Megadeth too. Dave Mustaine, the lead singer used to be in Metallica and played on this song. My favorite is "Sweating Bullets".
Plus the fact that Lars' kick drum style is gallopy in nature.

Funny thing you guys mentiond a Guns N Roses and Metallica combo here as they toured together in the early 90s--probably one of the biggest tours ever as Metallica was supporting The Black ALbum and Guns N Roses had their double album of Use Your Illusion I and II as their most current works and both were selling like hotcakes.
Remember Dave Mustane wrote this song. He included it on the Megadeth album, Killing is my Business...And Business is Good. It's called Mechanix. Not only that, MetallicA as a group, Dave Mustane included, wrote these songs in their late teens & early twenty's. They all are & were (RIP Cliff) musical prodigies

The 4 Horsemen is a Biblical reference from the book of Revelations. Also, Miss.... G & R and Metallica toured together in '92 I believe. It didn't end well.
And the greatest band ever, faith no more were fucking with axle rose the whole tour
I went to this show In Oakland, CA in 92 (Sept IIRC). G&R was an hour late showing up on stage by the time they got there, the crowd had revolted, and tore up the entire lawn/outfield and a dirt clod war ensued. I was up in the stands and saw the fracas, it was like watching bats swarming over the crowd there was so much dirt clods flying.
The city of Oakland sued G&R because they had to replace the entire outfield.
Lead singer of Metallica James Hetfield suffered a bad burn injury on his arms during a show on that tour - he mistimed where he was, or the wrong fire jet burst but he was in the blast of it. They postponed the concert several months but James still didn't play guitar due to his injuries - they had a stand in for his rhythm guitar piece though I cannot remember now who it was. After an encore James came out strapping and played guitar on Enter Sandman to finish his set. Then after getting our asses kicked for 2 hours by those awesome songs, the crowd had to stand for over an hour while amped and tweeking waiting for Axl. Also, the third (opening band) was supposed to be Faith No More, but after the postponement, Faith No More was replaced by Ice T's metal band Body Count. I would have preferred Faith No More.

Yep, James got burned in St Louis I believe, and Axel, for whatever reason, refused to come on stage. It turned into a riot. James got treated and only missed a few shows. His Guitar Tech filled in for him, and allowed James to perform the Vocals.

That middle riff that gets slow came about because Dave was playing Lynyrd Skynyrds "Sweet Home Alabama" and Lars thought that Dave made it up so he told him put it in the song.
