Introducing the Song of Songs, the Bible's take on erotic literature. It’s a bit of an odd one out in the Bible: there’s no storyline, no clear reference to God, and certainly no fire and brimstone - as you’d expect. Instead, it’s one elegant love poem, where a young couple expresses their desire for one another.
It’s arguably the finest example of ancient Hebrew poetry we have, although contains some unusual metaphors. From describing a lover's hair as "like a flock of goats", to her neck being "like the tower of David"; taking it literally, we get a bizarre, amusing, and unnerving picture.
In biblical scholarship today, the Song of Songs has been viewed within its historical context. In fact, plenty of the neighbouring civilisations in the ancient Near East had their own love poetry.
I really hope you enjoyed this one, I'd thought that I'd make something to mark Valentine's Day. How you like these weekly uploads? Thank you for 540k subscribers!

I think for the neck, the whole bucklers like shields of warriors, it would make the most sense as jewelry, as I’m sure there are tons of examples of wealthy women in that area and that time would have lots of jewelry.
Not a sure fire guess, but I think it makes a good amount of sense.
agreed. Plenty of evidence shows the mediterannean having disk-shaped jewelry, so, a string of disks=bucklers.
I agree. I think they might be referencing a necklace or something similar
Yeah, actually, in the 10th verse it goes:
"Your cheeks are beautiful with earrings, your neck with strings of jewels."
I think the shields are meant to be sunkisses/moles
Agree, that is what I can think of. Like the shells,it can look like shields.
Out of millions of youtubers, manscaped chose a Bible Study to sponser.
Men who study the Bible have balls too!
manscaped already sponsored several channels hosted by males, although it is weird for this channel
Well...it's a bit of a different kinda Bible study over here.
@@burninsherman1037 Yeah we have our balls out!
"ample behind, tight waist." This guy was after mine own heart.
Proof Sir Mix-a-lot was a time traveler.😁
"Her thighs extend her beauty"
It's also very specific. When you read something like that, you realize you're reading about what a real man wrote to a real woman. All the other songs have descriptions that are vague and applicable to any woman of reasonable looks. But this line is clearly about a very special lady.
Without any sugar the honey was the sweetest thing of the ancient world. No wonder it is mentioned so often in connection with love poetry... I suppose.
It is still being used as a metaphor to this day. Nowadays, people do call others honey.
@@master106 oh that makes sense now
Honey (technically) never spoils and is often found in Ancient Egyptian tombs. So they likely use that as a metaphor to love.
Interesting analysis
Plus, it's sweet. Though, the long lasting quality of it is something I'd never considered, but it definitely makes sense.
Always the Catholic churches here in the Philippines use Song of Songs as an allegory to Jesus and the church. What you said was spot on! I dunno why they just couldn't take it as it is. It's actually an interesting book in the bible.
What you do not understand is, that Bible Has multiple leyers. Ther is literary leyer you are advocating for, and it is absolutely beautiful on when it comes to the use of poeatry and story telling. But there are more leyers to it. Christians should acknowledge every single one of them.
@@jaremakarwowski1574 Like the layers Christians made up later to fit their messiah into the old testament?
@@GoldenBeholden no proof for that
I'm curious if it has to do with the early church's connections to Greek philosophy. Gnosticism has always been a thorn in the side of Christianity, which teaches that the body is impure and dirty and the soul/spirit is holy and pure. The bible never teaches that sex within the confines of marriage is impure or immoral, but is something to be enjoyed. God's first commandment to Adam and Eve is to be fruitful and multiply.
I find it interesting how so many christian complain about modern songs being all "sexual" or "suggestive"...like have they not read Song of Solomon?
But then again, it can be the artist behind it.
I had a guy actually sling some verses from this on me un-ironically as a pick up line and it was easily the most uncomfortable experience of my life. Being told you have goat hair and sheep teeth hits a bit different 2000 years later.

@@tamcon72 OOT, how the reforestation in Lebanon? if I'm not mistaken they tried to replant the cedar trees
@@LastBastion I have no idea. If they _have_ reforested the storied cedars of Lebanon, that awful port explosion in 2021 has probably required the cutting down of those forests for rebuilding efforts.

When you think of the culture of which the Hebrews came from, the pastoral imagery makes a lot of sense, as they were primarily shepherds.
Oh lord, I remember long ago when I was in Bible class and me and another kid would flip to the Song of Solomon, and would giggle our heads off (because you know kids).
Not a long time ago I was reading this book about Hebrew alphabet and the author has quoted the same love poem that has been talked about in this video (which I really enjoyed, as always!:D)
I will never forget this scholar said there that she has been confused for a really long time about the breast metaphor: but one of her students came to her and said "maybe the writer used it to represent the movement of a woman's breast while walking and/or running since there were no bras at the time, they were for real free to move and jump like fawns!". This interpretation stuck in my mind so fast and It is perfectly explanatory to me!
About the David's tower neck metaphor (this is just my idea), I think the author is just saying that her loved one has no fear of her femininity and that she is strong and proud of who she is, because It is easy to picture the opposite: an old lady has usually a curved neck and back and she is fragile and her figure is used as an image of lost beauty.
Let me know what you think about these interpretations!:)
tower of david....psalms of david chanting and proclamating god and his powers and protections aka shields for this troth shakra aka voice. voice=sound is control of the heavens inside aka energy field. deer and bresth's as lilies aka lilith aka diana deer hunter (babylon and vatican and hollywood), aka isis mother of jezus aka maria I and J (isis and jezus) = Y=yahova=yahobath desert goat god from south egypt/ethiopia yes there yahova aka yahobath aka the beast is onerd here as well exactly the bs as the rest of the contradictions and curses and dead's of yahova aka yahobath in the bible. lamb of god yeh goat baby is also called a lamb good luck christians if you stay only the flawless will be spitt out not the pro-christ nor the anti-christ followers

As someone who had read the Song of Songs, I agree that the descriptions were very... interesting. I think that was one of the reasons why I love Song of Songs out of most of the Bible. My parent is religious, and they sometimes respond to moments with Song of Songs, to a point, I have somewhat memorised the entire structure of the entire Poetry.
That's lovely
I'm atheist but my fav is still Ecclesiastes. It fits with my inner sad boy.
I grew up on science fiction & a little bit of fantasy, so when I would get bored during a sermon in church I would read Revelation, starting AFTER the part where he just talks about all the churches. Had to get right to the action!
If I thoughtfully nodded on occasion, then my grandmother would get compliments on my behavior, too! Bonus!
I think it was Piers Anthony who wrote a series based on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, or at least starting there but it is been a long time since I've read those. Never in church though. By that time there was too much note-passing going on amongst the youth group so I never got bored again.

In the Arab poems until very recently, many of similar imagery are used. I think it always comes to their culture and environment.
WAP is some kind of erotic poem and I bet the ancient Hebrews would find it very odd as well

@@RoyceThePrince Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Sooner or later he will come back...
Well that is probably because the overwhelming majority of weird content from the Bible is within the Old Testament, while most Christian denominations are based mostly on the New Testament.
They only teach you topics that further their agenda. Never trust organized religion
@@andres_b Well, as we've seen covered on this very channel, there is definitely plenty strange within the new testament too
The Tower of David could be the opposite version of the Tower of Babel. And since David killed Goliath and became the greatest king ever it could be a reference to him.
What a deliciously horrific visual, Hochelaga. I love the care that went into creating that nightmare
Cool! I've never heard the book being called the Song of Songs. I always knew it as the Song of Solomon.

I could listen to you recite love poems all day
I have a hebrew version of the old testament, and it is explained that the sheilds on her neck are comparable to a pearl necklace on her neck
I believe that the line discussing that “love is greater than death” can be a reference/prophecy of the death of Christ and His resurrection. Christ followers, such as myself, believe that Christ’s death conquered death, or an eternity of suffering in hell, and allowed us to have eternal life with God in heaven. With that being said, many of the songs in The Song of Songs (aka Song of Solomon) are actually worship songs; celebrating God’s glory and love and describing what a relationship with Him should be/feel like. For me, it is very hard to understand the use of love in a sexual connotation, but I also remember that love had many different meanings then and even different cultural understandings of the word too. Those are just my thoughts though!
It was written long before Jesus was born so I doubt it
You can't understand sexual love? Regardless you can see how physical admiration makes up a big part of this. Makes it tough to extrapolate liturgical worship from references to the body of a woman that are already metaphors
I've had an NIV Adventure Bible (which literally says "#1 Bible for Kids" on the cover) since I was five years old. I distinctly remember flipping through Song of Songs and progressively getting more and more freaked out, like:
"How does ANYONES eyes look like doves?"
"wWHO the heck has tiddies that look like baby deer??"
"Imagine having cheeks that look like they're made of spices 😭"
Peter Pringle actually sung the ancient Egyptian love song with the "her thighs extend her beauty" part, and honestly it's Very humanizing
In Russian having a honey on the tongue refers to person's speech being friendly/sweet. For example, a love confession that is extra would be considered a "honey speech".

Esther wasn't a religious book either. There is no mention of God at all. We were always told that Song of Songs was "God's love poems to his people." But Solomon had so many wifes and concubines that I'm leaning more towards he just wrote them for the ladies in his life.
