We can blame a lot of this confusion on the US educational system. Latin American culture as a whole isn't taught nearly enough in schools. As far as Afro-Latino culture is concerned, most artforms that gringos associate with Latin America have African orgins. Music genres like salsa, merengue, bachata, rumba, cumbia, samba, bomba y plena, etc. Not to mention the dances associated with these music styles. Religions like Santería and Candomblé. Martial arts like Capoeira. Athletes like Roberto Clemente, Sammy Sosa, Felix Trinidad, and Pelé to name a few. My point is that Latino culture is way more diverse than the media portrays.

@@sashanoel8766 Not true. The death toll of chattel slavery varied enormously from place to place depending on climate, the kind of work being performed, and the labor practices of the masters..In general, the enslaved were poorly fed, poorly clothed, and housed, had no medical care, and were over worked..Haiti and some of the sugar islands were literal death camps in which enslaved were worked to death because it was cheaper to bring more. In fact, some of those places could neither grow nor maintain population without a constant influx of new slaves until the abolition of chattel slavery. Think about that for a few minutes...In the US, the further south one went, the harsher the climate and harder the form of slavery; rice farming, indigo, sugar cane became. The US also had slave breeding farms and forced marches of slaves from one region to another after the land itself was worked to death, or when new land on the frontier was wrested from the Indians. There is nothing cute, pretty, or glorious in any of this even by the standards of those times. Moderns who make excuses for this while expressing horror over nazism are part of the same sickness.

Charlemagne isn’t the only one misunderstanding the term. WE (🇨🇺🇩🇴🇵🇷) ARE NOT LATINO. We do not lie within Latin America. We’re simply and technically “The Spanish Caribbean”. We were first purposely uncultivated in many ways so that we can be as lost and misinformed as we are today. Like English and french patois, we have Spanish patois. It’s only HARD TO SEE and say when blind folded by indoctrination. This was used, AND IT WORKED, to divide and conquer. If I could know things through skin color alone, maybe I could understand. But I am only "Black" because of the history, culture and tradition my parents and grandparents taught me.

Please be aware that the USA perspective on black history is not the ONLY reference of blacks on the American continent or in the Caribbean. We seem to want to rewrite history to fit modern usa perspectives. No other blacks had a Rosa Parks or MLK than the USA. Slavery was abolished in Latin n Caribbean before the USA, which makes black experiences in other countries DIFFERENT than the USA. Yes there is racism EVERYWHERE but the overall USA experience is unique ti USA. Stop making as if everyone who was brought out of Africa had the EXACT slavery and racist experience like in the USA.

And lastly, “Black” is not a race, but an ethnicity, while human is a race. Originally, the term “Latino” was more of a stigma and/or derogatory toward the Africans and Natives that the FRENCH in “Latin America” started, used as a separation mark. It meant you belonged to the French (Non British or Spanish).
-Though The Father of BLACK History is the reason for many opportunities for blacks today, the real reason Puerto Ricans flag so much is thanks to Don Pedro “The Teacher” Albizu Campos.

Everyone knows the word is for emphasis and I am not going to be one who throws the baby out with the bathwater on this one. I will show this video with pride to my middle school students starting at :13 seconds in to avoid the F in case anyone wants to get petty. Why? 3 of my students finally discovered through my teaching of black history month what to call themselves!!! They've never known there was a term: Afro-latino! They have parents from Cuba/Puerto Rico and a parent who is black. They have never fit a mold. They've always been asked questions they couldn't answer...till now. I believe it changed their life. Thank you for being part of their self-identity discovery. If anyone has a problem with that, they can talk to me personally. I am an educator. Prepared to educate even petty adults if I have to.

In the Americas, north, south, and central, not just the US, there has long been a tendency on the part of the white people in power in most of those places to "disappear" the black population or to marginalize it in every way possible, and, to dismiss the scale, duration, and the impact of the trans Atlantic slave trade on the Americas and on racial attitudes globally. When one compares the raw numbers of enslaved people brought to different parts of the Americas the question rarely asked or answered is why the US still managed to have the largest enslaved population in the Americas until 1865 when Brazil eagerly grabbed the title and kept it until nearly 1900.

You realize that there's a lot of black history in the Latin community, right? The African diaspora is huge in Latin America. When African slavery occurred, it didn't just stop in the US. It occurred all over Latin America and the Caribbean. Only about 6% of Africans went to North America. The majority of them went to Brazil and the Caribbean, so Latin America and the Caribbean actually had a larger slave trade than the American south. Also, Santo Domingo was the first place to transport African slaves in the Americas. That means that the Dominican Republic, which is where my family is from, was home to the first black people in the Americas. That's why a lot of Dominicans today have more African ancestry than Spanish ancestry, but the sad reality is that we don't celebrate our African history as much as we celebrate our Spanish history because of anti-blackness. African history is deeply ingrained in Latin American history, but because the legacy of white supremacy has produced anti-black beliefs across so many of our cultures, we don't celebrate blackness in our community as a whole. That's why so many people in our community, like yourself, don't acknowledge the fact that Latinos can be black as well. African Americans are not the only black people and their history is not the only black history. The black diaspora is huge and diverse, so please learn your history before you spout ignorance.
