      You have to assemble a diverse gathering to peacefully protest against the tv station not having a diverse cast. You may have to start with American roles like Zoe Saldana did. The American Blacks came up with our own versiob of The Wizard of Oz when we weren't represented in the other version of The Wizard of Oz. Im here to support and help however i can

    As an African-American, I can say that y'all are giving American tv waaay too much credit. There is a reason BET and TV One exist. We are underrepresented in the media as well. You should absolutely continue to write Univision and Telemundo but I'd also look into starting a television station that truly reflects the diversity of Latin America.

    I completely get you with the "don't look Hispanic" part. I have blonde hair, blue eyes and white skin. It's completely an American fetish towards big butt tan black haired Latinas. I'm Colombian and there are so many Afro-Latinos there that I had never seen in Colombian media and it surprised me so much. I don't know about Honduras, but in Colombia black people are considered very upbeat, positive, lovable and good dancers, but also low class. It's a system that is not addressed at all in Latino culture and America is blind towards it. The discrimination is subtle but very strong.

    This is wonderful. I appreciate your will to get your stories and cause out there. It's such a major issue. It all comes down to ownership as well. Afro-Latino will have to work together to own their stories, TV stations, productions...etc, and all of that will take time.
    Continue sharing your stories and keep the great work. The audience will come. Onelove

      Kemiztri In America we does realize that their are dark skinned Latinos, I don't think these young women mean no one knows. I think they mean that those that run that TV channel try to represent that one physical type. Bollywood does the same thing, it's like people of color are afriad to be of color which is exactly what makes them beautiful. I personally agree with what you said but i think you starting off with a insult is what threw people off.

    • @Bychance37
      @Bychance37 10 років тому

      Kemiztri First off you ignorant moron, I get why everyone is rude to you because you are an immature fool. You haven't the capacity to even understand what I wrote. Don't tell me what I just realized about Latinos, my sister is half Mexican, my nephew's kids are more than half and their mother (now my niece) is full blooded. The US is a melting pot why can't any other country be the same way?
      Africa is a continent not a country you idiot and it has 53 countries in Africa with the ddition of the islands there. But yet you are trying to tell me something and you don't even know the differnce between a country and a continent. I have traveled out of the US myself but that would never occur to someone like you because you are unintelligent.

    • @Bychance37
      @Bychance37 10 років тому

      Kemiztri Is something wrong with you, seriously? What do you think I meant when I said America was a melting pot so why couldn't any other country be one. I know Latin America is a melting pot, the continenet of Africa is a melting pot. You are so stuck on stupid that you fail to even realize that you're saying the same thing I said. That's why no one likes dealing with ignorant people, everything goes right over your head. I started off trying not to offend you and then here you come with the insults and immaturity.
      You take something as simple as me saying I travel and turn it into something it's not. You are a waste of time.
      No one likes Americans? Especially Latin America right? LOL yet tons of them want to be Americans and live in America, dude whatever.

    I'm so glad I discovered this video. I've been pitching a sitcom ( What is "We Are Familia" ? ) on black latinos for a year now. Recently, a producer said that the "afro-latino" fad might be ending and that it may be time to give up on this project. This video, and the amount of support it is getting, lets me know that being a latino of African descent is not a fad and that this is a subject that people will always be passionate about. Thanks for this video. It gives me more motivation to continue pitching my show.

    I total agree with these girls that most of the telenovelas dnt really show more of the diversity of us Hispanics it's not only Mexicans who are Hispanic there are so many more like Dominicans, Puertoricaños, hondureños , etc.

    • @gabrieldelarosa1485
      @gabrieldelarosa1485 10 років тому

      Well Hispanic and Latino are pan ethnic labels used for commercialism. Majority of telenovelas are made in Mexico for Univision so they are targeting a specific Mexican audience. Dominicans and Puerto Ricans are Caribbean or Caribenos so they are different from Mexicans and Honduras is part of Central America.
      While Hispanic and Latino are generic labels to group masses the one thing that is almost impossible to do is please everyone. It won't happen because every country has different accents when they speak Spanish and our culture and mannerism and even slang words can be very different. Like a Charro in Mexico is a Mexican Cowboy but in Puerto Rico it is a bad word. Puerto Ricans speak fast Spanish and Mexicans speak a slower Spanish.
      If you have a tv Network then you will have one audience who is your core demographic and the rest may not like it but no network would be stupid to abandon its core audience because if it did it would go out of business or competitors would just move in and take their audience.
      Their really is no such thing as Hispanic or Latin tv because these are pan ethnic labels. Networks again have the key demographic they are targeting. You do have though specialized or localized tv that also targets key demographics and this is something that will occur more and more in the future.
      Example
      Puerto Rican tv is Wapa TV or Wapa America
      Dominican TV targets the Dominican audience
      Estrella tv also targets Mexicans in West Coast
      Peruvian tv targets Peruvian.
      Mundo Fox targets Colombians Most of its Novelas are from Colombia.

    • @gabrieldelarosa1485
      @gabrieldelarosa1485 10 років тому

      Telenovelas are produced in Mexico by Televisa so of course the majority of actors and actresses are Mexican because Mexicans were the first to produce telenovelas and they are the most popular. Televisa does however invite other actors from other countries to be in Telenovelas like Cuban William Levy and Livia Brito many others.
      However, it is hard because Caribbean people have different accents that are hard to understand and is very different from the Mexican accent. Univision/Televisa tries to make them speak a in a nuetral accent.
      Hispanic and Latino are pan-ethnic terms used for commercialism. If you are going to use regional terms then Puerto ricans and Dominicans and Cubans are Caribenos or Caribbean people. It is very rare for a Caribbean person to be a top star in Mexico if they don't have the right accent and they don't look like a Super Model. Really since most of these Novelas are shot in Mexico they not even Hispanic they are Mexican and they have a Mexican flavor. Just like in Colombia when they shoot a Colombian telenovela they have a Colombian flavor with Colombian accent.

    • @gabrieldelarosa1485
      @gabrieldelarosa1485 10 років тому

      Well the majority of telenovelas are shot in Mexico so of course it is mostly Mexicans. That is where the telenovela industry is based. Mexico City is called the Latin Hollywood.
      Mexico were the first to develop Movies and Telenovelas and this is why a lot of actors from other countries go to Mexico to star or be in Telenovelas or Movies. Cuba, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic don't really have telenovelas.
      the 2nd biggest Telenovela market is Colombia and they started to produce telenovelas in 1959. However, most of the top actors and actress go to Mexico because they want an international market.
      Starting around 1990, Televisa found an enormous market for its telenovelas in Eastern Europe, as well as in Brazil, Vietnam, and other Asian countries. For example, Verónica Castro became an international star when the novela she had starred in many years ago, Los Ricos Tambien Lloran (1979), became a huge hit in Russia. By the late 1990s, the company claimed telenovelas were Mexico's leading export product. Many consider 1958 until 2004 to be Televisa's Golden Age of telenovelas.
      The most important Telenovela award shows are the Mexican TVyNovelas Award, hosted by the Televisa TVyNovelas magazine, and the one presented by Contigo in Brazil. TVyNovelas also has editions in Colombia, Chile, Puerto Rico, United States and Contigo has an edition in Chile. In 2008, The International Emmy Awards created a category for best Telenovelas.
      source Telenovelas
      Mexico produced a telenovela in 1951 and so did Cuba but Cuba telenovela industry did not survive because of Political turmoil. Puerto Rico produced like 4 telenovelas in the 70's through telemundo but they were not that popular. Dominican Republic started to produce Telenovelas in 1986 through Venevision.

    I totally agree with you Dswizzle90, as an afro-Jamaican/Cuban American, I feel the US should be more open minded about blacks that do speak other languages other than English, but because of the one-drop rule, to me its kind of like if your black then that means that you speak English and you're a Christian which it's not true, we're all made of different cultures, religions, languages, social game rules, etc. and that goes for Central and South America too, they need to wake up and see how the African diaspora played a big role on how what contributions and sacrifices they made the Americas the attracted place to be and the Indigenous diaspora cannot be forgotten as well because we also have indigenous blood and we should learn more about our African and Indigenous roots and besides we're all melanated.

      Specially Latinos with some Afro ancestry such as Cubans, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Panamanian, Venezuelan, Colombia, Brazilian, etc etc
      No, we do Not identify with Whiteness or Blackness.
      We identify by NATIONALITY & CULTURE.
      The only ppl who could do this are first or 2 generation Dominicans who lost their Dominicaness and choose an Americanized "blackness" Concept of identity even though majority deep down dont feel or understand such New Identity because they cannot related to real Hispanic Dominicans & other Hispanics, therefore they always end up abandoning or just using it in the Internet & not in real everyday life.
      National & Cultural Identity is SUPERIOR to Racial & Color Identity, Period.
      We have a National/Cultural Identity while u Americans have a Racial/Color identity.

    Afro-Latinos stand up! Love your video and back you up 100%. However, my thing also has been what about media in the U.S.? They also never portray AfroLatinos. They represent latinos only in one way. The olive complexion with the black straight hair. If an AfroLatino actor gets a role they have to play an African American. In this way it reinforces stereotypes and the public continues to believe all Latinos look one way.

    Your video address a very important point young beautiful ladies! I am also Afro latina from Honduras and I am disgusted about the racism that exist in the Hispanic media. They forget that the Latino culture reflect a diverse racial mix, they forget about the root of their music that it originated mostly from Africa and a good part of the overall culture of Latin America is Afrocentric. The whitening of the Latinos in media is due to the huge ego and perverted vanity of sick programing that has existed for to long that the ideal beauty is European. As you pointed out even people in public who are from Latin America react as if they have never seen a black person speak Spanish, when they most probably had neighbors who were African descendents in their countries, the ignorance is laughfable! But racism is worldwide when it comes to skin color the darker the skin the less it is represented in the media. What we Afro Latinos need to do is get proactive in developing our own media, and expose ourselves and support each other more! I wrote a book that I will be rewriting but if you like you can order a copy from Amazon the title is "Patti's Compromising Positions" its my first novel about a Garifuna young woman who takes the Punta Rock music all over the world, it is a romance and adventurous story you might be interested to read it, I get comments that it should be a movie! check it out. Hola chicas, muy interesante su proyecto y las entrevistas realizadas. En realidad han tocado un punto sensible que parece estar presente en la mayoría de los medios de comunicación. Puedo decirles que aquí en México los patrones de belleza que se observan en los medios, poco tienen que ver con la mayoría de la población, asignando a las personas que tienen màs color en la piel, comúnmente a papeles o roles secundarios, como empleadas domésticas, valet parking u obreros por decir algunos. Por lo que la respuesta que les dieron acerca de que las telenovelas hechas en México son las que no incluyen personas de un color de piel más obscuro, es cierto. Muy interesantes sus opiniones y las de sus entrevistados, muchas felicidades. Sólo trabajando de manera gradual puede crearse una cultura de la inclusión.

    Yes. Thank you for touching on this topic. I am in school to become a spanish teacher and I have noticed that Afro Latinos are not represented in the Latin media. As an African American it makes me upset because I’m like, the Latin media is aware that not all latinos look like these people on Latin television, right? It is sad that you all have to go through that.

    I am a Jamaican, living in America, I'm always called African-American. 9 generations from Africa, I am not insulted, but "Wow I understand." To honor and pay tribute to you two bold, brilliant and beautiful ladies I will attempt to respond in Spanish. Forgive me in advance should I not make the grade; but first let me say "1.Telemundo-TV World and 2.Univision-One Vision live up to their names." 1.The expansion of white supremacy through the TV WORLD and 2. The single/one vision they (white supremacist) have for the world. The new world order. Enough said about that and them. On to more important issues, such as you two beautiful Latina Queens.
    "Here I go!"

    +Proyecto Mas Color I absolutely LOVE what you two young ladies are doing! A lot of Afro Latinos also lack political clout, a prominent voice and overall equality in their respective counties. It's sickening and really sad. I feel for all of you and hope that one day, you will be recognized equally amongst other Latinos. The issue with light versus dark is that it is not limited to the US and Latin America, but worldwide. There is discrimination within other Latino circles where fair skinned European Latinos are favored over dark brown Latinos. Blonde hair and blue eyes rule in Caucasian circles. I find no race or skin shade superior , even if blacks were the first people to walk this earth, simply because we're all created equal. I tried to sign the petition, but was unable to for some reason. I will try again later this evening, along with spreading the word to some of my friends. I hope you two young ladies continue to do what you're doing and fight for equality for all Afro Latinos. You are Latino and I am American, and we should proud of our respective heritages. Just remember, that regardless of where you're from, black people are everywhere in this world. Our people were not only sent to the US and latina America. You come from a strong-beautiful collective called the African diaspora. Again, be proud to be Latina, but be proud to be black as well and remember that you are apart of something so special and pure. I wish you two ladies the best of luck! Stay intelligent, beautiful and steadfast in accomplishing all of your goals.

    • @davinamasemo5424
      @davinamasemo5424 10 років тому +8

      No because Jamaica isn't considered a part of Latin America.If you were Haitian however you would be afro-latino because hatians speak French (alongside Creole) and French - like Spanish and Portuguese - is a Latin based language :)

    • @gabrieldelarosa1485
      @gabrieldelarosa1485 10 років тому +1

      Davina Lydia Actually Haitians speak Kreyol not a latin based language it is not pure. French is a Latin language and they have some Latins words mixed in with African, Arab, Taino and other languages that make up Haitian Kreyol. Their is a small part of the population that can speak French fluently usually the are the Elites of the society but it is a small percentage.

    • @davinamasemo5424

    • @gabrieldelarosa1485
      @gabrieldelarosa1485 10 років тому

      Davina Lydia No problem their is just a ton of confusion. In fact after the Haitians defeated the French they declared themselves the first free African independent country in the Western Hemisphere.
      Another thing people confuse is the Caribbean being part of Latin America it is not. Latin America is Mexico to Argentina. Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Cuba are all in the Caribbean.
      In fact Puerto Rico is a U.S common wealth and not an independent country. Cuba sided with Eastern European Communist and the Dominican Republic shares and island with Haiti which is in the Caribbean.
      Lets say you live in Peru or Argentina or Chile and wanted to take a trip to Puerto Rico or Cuba or Dominican Republic for vacation then you would be traveling to the Caribbean or a Caribbean country or island U.S common wealth in P.R case.
      The thing is that those countries have Latin culture based society but they are not in Latin America and people get confused about that when it is not that confusing. Just like most Caribbean countries have a cultural from different places. Like Jamaica is a Anglo based culture and Curacao has a Dutch based culture but neither are in England or Europe.

      Gabriel DelaRosa Dude, Mexico IS NOT part of Latin America, in fact it's part of North America together with the United State and Canada. When people say, let's go to Latin America, they usually do NOT speak about Mexico, bcs all they can say is " let's go to Mexico" when people want to go to Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Brazil or Chile, they usually refer to us as "let's go to Latin America".
      We are part of Latin America, therefore Latinos.
      Mexicans aren't part of Latin America, you people are North America.
      The thing is that in Mexico they have a Latin culture based society but they are not in Latin America and people get confused about that when it is not that confusing.
      People need to understand that Mexico are not in Latin America but North America.. HELLOOO MEXICO MAKE BORDER WITH THE UNITED STATE.. if Mexico was "latin american" then the U.S. would be Latin America too...

And this dude is mixed with black, white and Puerto Rican, and I'm like wow are you serious. So one day in Spanish class, the teacher asked me to speak Spanish and I did, and a student asked me was I part Hispanic and that was before I new I was actually part Hispanic. Let face it, most black Americans or Americans in general think that hispanic or latino is a race, they don't even know that you can be as dark skinned as the typical African and still be Latin American. Also, they got their struggles in america, so what makes you think that they have time to care about afros in other countries.

Your "African-ness" comes BEFORE ANY OTHER CLAIM...PERIOD! Code would dictate that those who do not follow this should be "removed" from OUR community. There are ONLY two races of people on planet Earth when it comes to the power dynamic of white supremacy...WHITE and "NON-white". Honestly, everything else is moot.

      GRENADABOY516 Well it was all Mexicans who abolished slavery. Jose Maria Morelos was a priest not a solider even though he was executed. Many Mexican Amerindians died to expel the Spanish and for Freedom. Just like many White American Union soldiers died to free African slaves. Vicente Guerrero was just one Mexican General. Remember it was Augustin de Iturbide who penned the Plan of Iguala which made all people equal.

    This is so true... majority of the people I know think I'm lying when I say I am Puerto Rican and Black because I don't "look" Puerto Rican.

    Just to add. During my childhood in America is was kind of similar except for a few sitcoms you rarely saw other cultures on tv. And if you did it was very stereotypical nonsense. Today it's better way better now all we need is the quality back.

    Bravo ladies, I think it might be beneficial for you to reach out to other Afro Latinos on UA-cam to have them tag your videos, whether they are beauty gurus, have a cooking channel or any of the many channels they might have in between Many of them have followers from many different cultures.

    Young ladies! I am impressed with your delivery and the feedback from the interviews carried out. However, as to the media in the USA there is not much to go by proudly although for real in the Latino World it is much more pathetic. Often times because of this I rather seek to listen programs and watch television coverage (drama and movie included) Africa, or from Jamaica. Of course Euro programs are also watch in these countries but the difference is Afro programs are well represented.
    The time the above video was published was a few in days over three years ago. It will be a pleasure to visit on facebook to see what progress and what assistance can be made to push your campaign further. It is not apology that the need exist to embark upon the concept of executing television programs and/ or stations that reflect the imagines of blacks in the Latin World or elsewhere with the objective of improving black lives.

    You guys or someone of Afro-Latino descent should start there own web series on UA-cam. I know a few African Americans that have them (Issa Rae, B&S TV, and BOA TV). Or maybe collaborate with these people to get the word out about Afro-Latino talent.

    Sisters I love your you tubes. I am from Africa living in Canada. You are at the right lack place USA, where you can put pressure on these TV show owners. I speak portuguese and Telemundo is bresilian, we rearely see afro latinas (os)representation. Please let it out fight for it.
    White or light skin latinas are more racists than white americans.
