I got a cookie press for Christmas when I was around 10 years old. I loved making spritz cookies and I still have the press 60 years later! I haven't used it in years but I think I'll break it out this weekend. Thanks John!

I love the way stuff was made before, it was made to last not get replaced. I had several vintage appliances including a hand-crank ice cream machine that was a wooden bucket on the outside, unfortunately when my dad passed away when I was younger a lot of that stuff was lost.

I never comment on videos. This recipe is legit. I have a 60 year old electric cookie press that belonged to my mother. I have been using a recipe from an old cookbook for 20 years that usually gets me mixed results after a lot of yelling at my cookie press. I decided to try something new this year. Followed the recipe exactly as written and it every cookie came out on the first try. Thank you for sharing this recipe!!

First I LOVE your style of teaching. You make it fun. Now on to cookies. When we first married my husband would gobble these up as soon as I had them made.. He loved them, so I made them often. Sadly we lost him this past June to cancer...however I will be making these cookies to give out to friends. And who knows, maybe heaven has a Spritz cookie bakery . If it does I am certain he is their best customer.

My son and I made these every year when he was a kid. We still do when we're able to be together for Christmas baking (he lives in San Diego; I live in Oregon). One year, I had run out of sprinkles, so I mixed up some cinnamon and sugar to use instead. He liked them so well I have to do some with cinnamon and sugar every year for him. Brings back happy memories. Thanks for always making me smile!

I spent the weekend before Christmas at a friends farm several years back, and his mom baked a ton of these for us to decorate/eat. Different shapes, tons of sprinkles, and colored icings. Never made these before, so it was such a fun experience for me. She then packed them up for us to take back home.. Good times. 🥲

I have my mom’s cookie press it’s older than I am, which, I must admit, is quite old. Lol. I watched with interest to see if your recipe matched hers and they were very different. My mom’s calls for a mixture of butter and cream cheese. Her recipe also calls for a teaspoon of orange zest, and a touch of cinnamon - vanilla extract only. My mom’s recipe is AMAZING! You just can’t eat one of these cookies. Her recipe was called Snowflakes and it came with the original press. I love your videos. So much baking to do. So little time. 😊❤️

I make these every year. I have gone through a few presses over the years. These are my sister's favorites and she has been known to use them as "spoons" for cool whip. I'll be making them later this week. Doing something every night to build up my stash for gift giving. Last night was choc chip w/walnut and tonight is my grandma's roll and cut sugar cookies (we will decorate them on Christmas day). Right now it's all about baking and freezing!

I use the same recipe and make plain, red and white spritz in different designs. One suggestion though, I use the silicon baking pads and they come out perfectly. Like you said no parchment paper, and no wax paper. I didn’t have much luck pressing the cookies directly on to the baking sheet. They seem to stick too much. I love decorating the cooks with all the different sprinkles and crystals. I also use the coloring gel because it’s thicker. If you use too much of the drops the dough can be too liquid and not hold together properly.

Hi, thanks for your answer - and your question! I hope I‘ll be able to to describe the differences in a way that will help you to get the right picture... which includes using the right vocabulary... Hope I will manage...
When we make „Spritzgebäck“ we usually use either a piping bag (the dough has to be a little softer) or - more old old-fashioned - a grinding machine with a special attachment for spritz cookies (you‘d want a more solid dough for that one). My mother‘s recipe which I usually use is well adjusted for these machines. The typical German shapes for spritz are horse shoes, rings, stick-shapes or S-shapes. When you use a grinding machine you form the cookies (we call them „Plätzchen“ in contrast to all-year cookies which would be „Kekse“) in one hand while using the other one to work the machine. There are recipes with or without nuts (my mother‘s uses ground hazelnuts), even some with marzipan or nougat, with or without chocolate glaze. We usually don‘t use food coloring or extra toppings, but the „modern bakers“ are open to many variations! So the basic recipe on this video is indeed similar to several of the various recipes we know in Germany. The difference is mainly in the shapes and little extras.
I‘m a rather nostalgic person, so I love to use my late mother‘s recipe. She always started the Christmas baking season with it, and I love to follow that tradition...
All the best, take care, and enjoy this wonderful season! 🎄🍀🎄

@@hrbooksmusic7878 You are so sweet! Yes, I am from the States. The time and place where I grew up, we had many immigrants from Europe and Eastern Europe. One of the bakeries in my neighborhood was German. After Sunday mass, my mom would take us to the German bakery and let us select any, one only, cookie we would like. It was very special because my parents were very strict with sweets. I always chose the spritz (Spritzgebäck) cookies. Other than the holidays, when the spritz cookies would look more like the ones John makes (and I make those too with my press!) the cookies appeared to be piped, not from a press. There was a choice of plain or ones with chocolate sprinkles.

I make an eggnog version of spritz cookies that are just delicious! Every year I make Christmas trees with a glaze and sprinkles, wreaths and flowers with candied cherries, and candy canes dipped in chocolate with chocolate sprinkles. The candy canes are always the first ones gone.

I love spritz cookies too John! They are so beautiful and tasty! I use almost the exact same recipe, except I do 1/2 a cup of sugar instead of 3/4 so that they are slightly more buttery and I just use the almond and not the vanilla because I like the almond flavor to stand out in a spritz cookie. However I do use vanilla extract in many things just like you John.

I no longer have a cookie press. So I rolled them in a ball and smushed them down with the bottom of a cup. Have to get another cookie press. But they turned out great. My fav cookies 💕💗💞

I've found the best way is to roll my dough, like a log and it's easier to load the batter

Since I was raised with swedish traditions which spritz cookies is part of those traditions. My mom would make 3 batches green red and white. She would let us roll them and make wreaths and candy canes

I have been making a recipe from a magazine I found years ago. I use a jam and chocolate mix to sandwich them together. My recipe uses blanched almonds. They are so yummy and my favorite cookies. Thanks for sharing. I may try some of your ideas. I do like to add these cookies to neighbor cookie boxes. And I love them in my cookie jar too. Happy Holidays!
