SUA is a private, four-year liberal arts college and graduate school located in Orange County, California. I think Henry started off as a very young angry, man, (like a lot of us) and he found a way to channel his anger, through his music, and later his spoken word in a very positive way. He has done his best to make the world a better place with his uplifting message.

I've listened to all of Henry's spoken word performances, and this is one of the most inspiring. The world needs more people like this dude; he's a great humanitarian, interesting, funny, and even though he's humble and says he's not that intelligent, he really is.

I always wondered if he took up the slack of the cord in his hand so he could swing the microphone at some asshole punker who's poking cigarettes towards his legs.
It prevents unnecessary and unexpected noises.
In spite of what Kathleen said, a quality mic and cable will be silent when moved around (I know from years of experience) but whatever reason he does this, it is now conditioned into him, it's an ingrained habit. Being onstage for most people has a certain degree of feeling exposed, so we go with what is comfortable, as it makes being onstage easier.
That's my take on it.

I love listening to Henry talk. I was into Black Flag (when Ron sang) even before Henry. I'm so glad he continues to speak. He, like me, is still punk rock in his heart. At our age, punk rock isn't playing old punk songs. It is, not becoming a sheeple, a blind follower of someone else's rules. It's blazing your own trail, even when the powers that be, tell you not to. You do what you believe in even if it's not popular. You make your own judgements based on your own observations, not others. Doesn't sound like much. When your younger, many people want to be individuals and sticking to your guns is part of being young. When you reach middle age, you've seen that following the heard and keeping your head down is a way to live, simple, quietly. Making waves can only lead to trouble. Henry takes the punk attitude we had at 14 and let it mature with him. As punk kids, we knew the system was corrupt so we wanted to destroy it, leaving anarchy. As mature punks, we know the system is broken. But we should try to fix it instead of being passive. It's much easier to remain passive and silent and be part of the flock. Mature punks don't die their hair blue to distance themselves from the flock. They speak out about injustices. They do what they know is right, even when it's unpopular. They don't need to be fake so people will like them. They become part of the solution, even when it's an unpopular solution. They stay true to themselves. The Dali Lama, who knows labels are for jars not people, would be a great example of a mature punk. Henry, thanks for showing us, at this point/age in life we can still live bravely. We can still stand on our own feet and ideals and at the same time be a positive force of nature. Thanks for decades of inspiration and reminding me I'm not alone.

From that thought some will have their curiosity piqued and will go research more about how to change things. To think that quote would incentivize someone to become pro war shows your ignorance of how the human mind works (I hope you don't take that as an insult). You're basically saying people will start wars because that's easier but their aren't only two options, it would be even easier to simply do neither.

this is a true story....my brother saw Black Flag in the early 80s do a show in a shithole club in Atlanta Ga....my brother was one of the only people in my entire school that liked Punk by the way......so after Black Flag performed their set...my brother saw Rollins in the crowd just hanging out......so my bro walks up to Rollins and asked """Man what is Life....what does it all mean and how can I make something of my world?...""" I actually got to meet him, in my neighborhood. I had no I did who he was to be honest, but I was walking home from work. He was charming and honestly extremely well spoken of intelligent had a great conversation about life. Left me questioning the symptoms of life. Ended up leaving my job and actually moving to South America which always been my dream at a young age.
I think when it comes down to just being a good person, Henry Rollins is
my favorite celebrity. He couldn't care less about the fame and the
money, but rather uses that to help people, travel the world, and just
meet new people from all walks of life and learn about them. That's a
man who is utilizing his full potential with the short time we are all
given on this little planet. Truly badass. And as I've been getting
older, I admire people like that more and more. He has more of a voice
than most of us and he damn well uses it to inspire us to be our best
selves. I don't know, it just seems like in an age where all I really
observe anymore (especially among my college-age peers) is just a sea of
people glued to their screens and being robots, I feel more of an urge
to go make these human connections like he does.
I picture his personal life is a lot like his character Cain in "He never died". Simple apartment with a box of money at the foot of his bed.
he has a firm footing in his punk rock and proletarian roots, he never sought to be a celebrity. An important point- it's so easy to not be something you don't want to be. You simply reject it.

I'm a social worker in Chicago, and this is inspiring. My travels are less world-wide, and more neighborhood to neighborhood, home to home; but, damn if this message doesn't resonate with my day-to-day experience. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I was lucky enough to attend one of Henry's sets a number of years ago and it was like seeing the most amazing motivational speaker. If you can see him live, do it. Watching videos like this is fine, but the sense of community you get from doing it live is second to none.
I love to hear Henry Rollins speak. Whether it's comedy or a serious narrative, I always enjoy listening to his words. He's a wonderful human being!

I found Henry about ten years ago in a interview and was blown away by him. He has become one of my favorite UA-cam people to watch. His energy is contagious but not only contagious it is enlightening to listen to him.

I saw him present his 2018 travel slideshow last night in Houston. Having just returned from teaching English in Indonesia and Prague over the past year, it was profoundly meaningful to me. If he comes to your city with his travel slideshow, do yourself a solid and go.
My first exposure to Rollins, having been introduced to me by my son. One of few times I can characterize a discourse as a true paradigm shift for me. I have exactly one life experience that parallels these stories, and that resonates as a truly life changing event.

I wholeheartedly agree that, once you get to know a people or their country and culture, and if you’re lucky enough to befriend people, it’s very hard to do them harm.

Henry was never my favorite musician, no offense, but I'm very glad I've found him as a story teller. I did really enjoy the art in the music videos. This is a great talk, and I'm very inspired by these words. I have had some of the same thoughts. It's great to hear someone else speak these words I relate to so much. Talks like these are far more useful than a college education and high school education. These are the people who should be teaching us.
Henry's adventures need to be filmed and spread to the masses so we can learn to be angry and compassionate to make a difference in the world, this message needs to be shared through his experiences. The world would most definitely be a better place if we all did the same.
Henry is la 'celebrity' who never got big-headed that he could 'save' the world, aiming too high.
Instead he is meeting the world, because he is humbly willing to aim low enough.
This makes his talks so much more tolerable than Russel Brand & Charlize Theron.

I have thought, for many years, that every high school student should be required to take a school trip to another country. The USA is so isolated. It is imperative that people see other countries and cultures.
Because other countries aren't isolated? Perhaps every school in every country should require their students to take a school trip to another country?
Europeans tend to see more variety of cultures and people, even if they don't actually go to another country. Not sure about the rest of the world though.
The US is not homogeneous. There's tons of cultural diversity here we just all speak roughly the same language. Visit New Orleans and Boise in the same week and you can see it.

The part about Haiti is interesting. I have a good friend from Port Au Prince who comes from an extremely rich family…..in Haiti, the rich are very, very rich. He’s one of the most fascinating people I know, and the stories from his childhood are incredible.

I met Henry at OSU in 1998. After the show, he signed my bestfriend's jeans- -- she framed them. He signed my left breast. We took photos & he gave autographs. Now, 20+ years later, I still have the biggest crush on him.

Henry is a really great example of why politicians are really ruining the world. My father always said to me if we went to another country and just chatted up local people we would find we have more in common than you'd think. Henry has done this and it's so true. We can really all get along....it's the guys in power that stop us from it. I liked this talk a lot.

I love Rollins. He's got to be the most honestly patriotic person I've ever seen who actually knows what he's talking about. This guy only has a high school education. But the what I loved about this lecture or whatever it is is that in Cuba he got on the "short bus." What's even funnier is that no one in the audience laughed. I'm still laughing about that. Because he paused before saying short bus. No one got the quip. That's hysterical.
That guilt question was very interesting.
I'm fortunate enough to be living abroad like I had always wanted and worked hard to do, but I never talk about it or post many photos on social media. I always think it's tacky braggadocio when I see other people do it.

i liked the guilt part too, cause if you're not synical enough or have enough contact with yourself -you get stopped dead in your tracks -you sort of loose interest cause you blame yourself if u cant help out etc.. ive been in Bosnia myself as a medic in UN/NATO for 3 yrs and the amount of bad'ness i could not do something about can really pull you down.. its the little things that "the little man" can do that count -so whenever or "if" you get the chance to do something "bigger" -u gotta understand yourself that ALL problems cant be fixed so u focus on at least doing what u can and when you're in that process u will unlock the guilt to a degree that you can cope with in life.. Thanks for putting this up. It's been interesting watching Hank's spoken performances age over time, a lot of his earlier ones I suspect he wouldn't agree with anymore. Nowadays though, they have an air of timelessness. Appreciate the new rated-G language, too. Kids need to hear this stuff.
