  • Off leash training for your dog requires complete control. In this short video I let you in on a secret when you are training your dog to transition to off-leash. Using a short pull tab makes this easier. Ill talk about the benefits in this video and show you what a pull tab is.

Another great video. I was a professional service dog trainer of the 1970’s & 80’s, and now the methods that were used then are frowned upon, understandably, although I was teaching classical & operant conditioning back then. However, there are many good parts of the training methods that were used that are still relevant today. It’s good to see a common sense approach to sound dog training.

What I like about the German dog-training is that it is for big dogs. It seems to me there exist inherent differences between training a big dog and training a small dog. I've a 5-month-old mastiff/GSD mix.

I've been using a coupler for just the same I can clip one side to the middle ring to make a handle, or clip both ends to his collar to keep it out of the way/have a shorter handle.. It's ideal, no different to what's shown here. Very useful and inexpensive.

      YES!!!
Have always trained my dogs to listen well to my command, positive reinforcements...pinch collar has been great for that. I now have a 4mo old puppy who's doing brilliantly, but I am ready to step it up. She's starting to have her rebellious streaks (right at nap time, lol). She is part Catahoula and GSP, so I do not want her outwitting me at any point. With her age and a single coat the pinch collar would be inappropriate, and she does very well at her age off-leash. I would like to improve my scope of training, and I believe this is what we need.
Please do a segment for puppies.

To me the gist of it is: making your dog believe he's off leash though he really isn't. From his point of view a magic leash appears from nowhere and he gets corrected. This would make him more obedient when he really is completely off leash, simply because he thinks the magic leash will appear any moment if he doesn't comply.

    Hi Robert, great video again.
I have a question for you, I have a boxer, still working on recall and getting it slowly. Now we try nice leash walk before of leash and not sure is it a boxer thing but he is so interested in surrounding all the time - it's hard to get him walking next to me. Just realised he is better on it when we coming down from a walk in the woods. We go out, he runs free in woods and coming back when housing area starts I put him back on leash and he seems way more controllable and calmer. Should I do any training after tiring him out first? Or is it worth to try and teach him heal walking etc without him being tired ?
    Thanks

    • @susanlippy1009
      @susanlippy1009 2 роки тому

any training depends on repetition of behavior. The more the dog does it wrong the longer it will take. You want to work on heal ect. when you are most likely to get proper heal. For the before work you should not be heading anywhere until pup can walk reasonably on a leash. in other words you should practice the lose leash walking pup already knows when heading out and teach the newer skills when pup is likely to be focused such as in home. Teach at home first then gradually increase distraction so you get maximum amount of correct repetitions.

I thought the same thing for my dog, whose shoulder height is well below my knees while walking. I'd either have to hunch over the entire time or make the leash too long according to the video. I'm guessing lengthening the leash to the point where its comfortable with arms relaxed to the sides would be the solution.

You could possibly use lighter line? I know here, Tractor supply co. Sells these 50 ft long lines made of this very lightweight nylon. I mean, the whole 50 ft of line weighs less than my standard 4 ft leash by like 1/4. They sell it with hunting stuff I believe. You could technically cut one of those to whatever length you'd like, and it'd still be lighter than the leather used in this video. It's worth a shot?

Koehler was the first to use tabs and many, many people adopted them because of his work. Tabs and light line are signatures of the Koehler Method . For C.D. I've never seen more solid dogs than Koehler--most people have immense problems with heeling--his dogs were rock solid in the highest distraction areas (his method is not a drive method so you don't see the energy in some other events). The tab was to make the dog think there was NO weight, no leash and he was free (as is the light line) and of course the throw chain which was also adopted by countless other trainers. On another note I see you mix AKC commands (using the dog's name first) and the Schutzhund (illegal to use the dog's name)--is there a specifric reason for this?

Not every Husky is the same but you know your dog best. If already more or less obedient, you could use a long leash/line, silent whistle and an e collar. Start with the e collar in the house for several weeks, (maybe 2 months, every time he reacts give a treat) then outside and so on. Little steps. It will take a long time but if the result is good, the effort was worth it. And if not, you at least tried to give your dog more freedom. I'm in the same - or more bad - position as you coz my Greyhound has hunted rabbits many years. But I will try nevertheless because the idea she will never run free for the rest of her live is an unacceptable thought.

@@carlb641 Did you already try the silent whistle inside the house and give them every time a treat or their meal? My 3 dogs listen perfect to that. One trainer said to me 'the whistle should be imprinted'. (Like Pavlov did). That will take some months....However, if I would try the long line at my dog, she will certainly fail, just like your dogs. That's why I go on whistling longer - in the house - with treats she really loves. Later, on the long line, I will use the e collar which I hope will do its job. Yes it is a long road but I'm determent to give my sight dog more freedom. She is one of the fastest breed in the world and I think it is cruel to let her live her life on a leash. IF I fail - which is not my intention - then I know for myself that I tried everything that was in my power. I wish you a lot of success AND determination! Kind regards from the Netherlands.

Just because an already trained dog doesn't do the command instantly, it's not the end of the world. A dog is not a robot. Sometimes, it doesn't want to do stuff. For this particular instance, I think it's the heat that's draining Goofy's focus. Robert is filming a video, so of course his focus would not be entirely on Goofy, to get maximum performance. Dogs pick up on people's energy. Robert and Goofy are relaxed here, so sometimes commands won't be done in an instant like when they are participating in the obedience ring.
And about the rest of your comment, watch Robert's videos before you make uneducated assumptions. Robert Cabral is a professional dog trainer who has dealt with all kinds of dogs. You can spew all the "scientific" bullshit you want, but actions speak louder than words.
