I think you’re getting “a cry for help” confused with a socially aware artist with an empathetic nature writing about things that move him to the point where he tackles these issues in his material as opposed to constantly writing about scoring weed, the pursuit of monetary gain and getting his tip wet - there’s a big enough market for that stuff already and it’s just not his world. His current album is a “concept album” of sorts based on his experiences with illness and all the other sh*t that came with that so it’s gonna be the general theme of his recently released material. I dunno man, I’m guessing his current climb in popularity tells us people want to hear an artist talk about these darker aspects of our society which they can relate to. We must get to a point where the penny eventually drops and you finally understand what kind of artist Ren is - we’ll get there and we’re all here for it when that eventually happens.

Sam Tompkins just posted some REALLY sad news today. His father attempted suicide last Thursday and today, Tuesday November 14th he passed away.
We need to show Sam as much love as we can and continue to spread his music far and wide.

I really have to wonder whether KSO has bothered looking into Ren and all of the struggles in his life that bring context to why Ren brings up these topics, as he keeps seeming surprised when Ren talks about self-harm and su*cide. KSO's issue seems to be somone profiting off of these tough topics, but proceeds from his songs about Joe went to Joe's parents and the non-profit that searched for his body. Furthermore, Ren has used music as his therapy ever since he got sick, so these topics are things he legitimately has struggled with and has worked through by making music about it.
Ren got sick around 18-19, became bedridden (stuck in bed for 23hrs a day due to pain and weakness), misdiagnosed as ME and then eventually told everything was in his head and that he was bi-polar, meds constantly messing with him because he didn't have what they were treating him for and he had to deal with the side-effects, had a psychotic break with reality, where it wasn't until his mid twenties they found out he had lyme disease, at which point lyme disease had done severe damage to his nervous system/brain and made him develop an auto-immune disease, got a radical stem cell treatment in the US that helped him alot and he is currently in Canada getting treatment to be able to manage everything.
Here is a really good interview with Ren where he talks about this in detail.

Ren uses his music a lot as his therapy. He openly talks about it. He has been in therapy for a variety of things. He's gone through these things and like a lot of us who have, he understands that a lot of these issues don't get talked about enough. One of the biggest things for people going through mental health issues is a feeling of isolation and talking about it makes people feel less isolated. He isn't afraid to talk about painful and dark topics that need to have more light shined on them. It's worth listening to some of the interviews he's done lately. They would answer a lot of the questions you've had. Dope reaction, I like the honesty.

No matter how long it takes, after the first 5 ren songs, one must listen to the rest of his catalog. It’s a law. 😂 happy to be on this journey with you. I appreciate your honesty, it makes me all the more happy when you like what I think you will.
Keep in mind that a lot of Rens popular music is a lot older. My understanding is that he’s had a lot of therapy and he’s coming from a much better place.
I was bullied in school. I was veryyyy awkward looking back then. At least now kids have contact lenses and Acutane, but things were rough before Y2K 😂

Ren has been in therapy for years and still is. He is empathic, so he feels other people's pain more deeply than non-empaths do. I think his music is to wake the world up to the plight of people who don't talk about these tough subjects and need help.
I got cornered several times in school by bullies because of how I looked.

I think Ren shows: years in bed/bedroom dying + an inquisitive mind + ADHD + talent = a great storyteller with deep empathy who has spent a lot of time wondering about what's wrong in society. When you (or your loved ones) go through near-death experiences, you tend to try to figure out what's really important. If the journey goes beyond this mortal coil, what can you take with you? Once you've thought about that for yourself, you wear that lens when looking at the world. Fashion magazines lying next to a philosopher's treatise or a religious doctrine become more or less valuable. You womder about the cause of societal or world problems.
I can't imagine how anyone in Chester Bennington's (or Amy Winehouse's) life didn’t see the distress they were in when it was so obvious in their lyrics, but that's not exactly the sense I get from Ren's music. Yes, Ren writes about feeling shitty - about himself or the world or greed or corruption - but he isn't hopeless. Dude's deep, and I think that can be misunderstood. He just writes about what he sees and feels. Sometimes that can be sad, but sometimes it's fun or cheeky. Remember "Humble" or "Power"? Both have meaningful, inspiring messages, but with a fun beat.
I just hope this new round of treatment doesn't drag him down too far.
    Great reaction as usual!

Lol My friend, Ren's likely spent years in therapy. ... This is Ren sharing what he's learned. On this stage, he is the therapist. 😅😁
Fxxk... With all the things going on in my life right now, I'm the guy who needs therapy. That, in itself, may be the reason I've become so interested, (bordering on obsessive..), in Ren's work. I mean, I can't even just call it "music" at this point. What he puts out, in my opinion, is straight up art. But then again, it almost feels like just calling it "art", simplifies what he is doing and presenting.
The only time I had ever even come close to being as interested, (obsessed LOL), in a single artist, was when I first heard Prince. ... I went out and bought his first album, "For You", and it blew me away. Prince was something special. I ended up owning all of his albums, up until "Lovesexy", and a few after that.
The only other person I would compare with Ren, would be Tim Minchin. His lyrics, his musicianship, and his comedic deliveries of heavy issues, make me want to see a collaboration between them. That would ...... oof... I can't even think of what kind of mind fxxk that would be.... 😵‍💫
Anyway, hope you enjoyed the book I just wrote for you.
    Another awesome reaction!
    Cheers!

I wore a hip-to-chin back brace for scoliosis and was bullied BAD before schools cared. Kids grabbed the front bar and shook it…called rattling my cage. They also loved pushing me down and calling me a turtle while I tried to get up.
In high school, I destroyed it, knowing we couldn’t afford another one.
I thought it would stop but it didn’t. Anger built until it was too much and I went off one day and wouldn’t stop punching my tormentor, even when she was on the ground.
I was suspended and that’s when it ended.

A lot of artist's work is a Snapshot in time. Ren's work often addresses issues outside himself. I can see him speaking on this subject, even if it was never something he fought with personally. Just as Ren isn't Jenny or Screech, but he was speaking on a bigger topic that wasn't his own story.
As for the snapshot in time into Ren, I don't know if Ren had body image issues, and if he did, we also don't know if he is past them. Some issues, even when conquered, still leave marks.
KSO, as always, enjoy your reactions, and thank you.

Ren had said it he said he’s had many times where he wanted to end it but he didn’t 1. Because of his friend Joe who he made the suicide song for and the other was his mom he said when he was gonna do it the thought of putting her through that pain is what kept him going !

  • @acmalms0222

There are 2 things I think you need to recognize to fully understand Ren. A lot of the music you are listening to is from a time of pain and suffering from a dark place for him. This comes out in his music. I think you will see a change over time as he has better experiences in life. The other is that he is an incredibly empathetic person. He sees others struggles and immediately feels empathy. He highlights this in his music as well in an incredible understanding and relatable way. I don't think this will ever change. He does not sugarcoat and is authentic and honest. I will always appreciate that even in songs that may not speak to me as much as others. As for therapy, I wouldn't be shocked if someone who has been through what he has hasn't considered it at times. I take him for who he is as I would hope others would do the same with me. (ramble, ramble, ramble)

hey, I've often thought that Ren in particular often uses filters in his videos, especially on Instagram. I think he has self-esteem issues even though he's such a beautiful person (inside and out). His help is his music, he doesn't need any outside help. He's self-reflective enough, I think. ❤❤

Ren has as both his strength (and as his weakness ) his ability to empathize with what he sees around him. All the time he spent trapped by his physical illness didn’t stop his mind from working overtime on the life he has up until that point. For once I am glad that I am as old as I am. My kids just got by before social media really took off.

I believe some artists do use their music as a cry for help. Some just parrot what others feed them. Some (and I believe Ren is in this group along with artists like NF) use their music as therapy. Just getting those thoughts out in the world can be cathartic in itself.

You pose an extremely interesting question, KSO. You asked whether Ren was in a mental state where he was essentially begging for help when he created this song and other music. I have no answer, but I do wonder if you are on to something. Misdiagnosis, drugs, extreme and never ending pain--what would you end up looking like? How would that affect your mental stability? I believe the genius of Ren is due in big part to his experience.

I was never physically bullied in school; it was always that verbal and mental shit. Name calling, the usual. But there was this time that the boy my older sister was seeing used to always shove me into the school walls on the outside of the building (they were lined with tiny little stones, so that shit hurt) while we waited for my sister to meet him. Wasn't so much a pattern of bullying since he left me alone when they broke up. Oh, actually now that I think about it, there was a guy in high school that also used to shove me in the halls with his shoulder, but I think he was probably just embarrassed that he had a crush on the fat girl because when his friends weren't with him, he'd talk to me in class sometimes.
    Ah. Youth.

I take your point on Amy Winehouse... That was a crying shame such a talent was allowed to self destruct without any help and support. This track is pretty old though now, so I don't think this is a problem with Ren's brain constantly being filled with this kind of thing. My take on this is... This, like Money Game 1,2 and 3, is a commentary on the problems in todays society. We chase money, we chase vanity and validation. We put pressure on kids from an early age, especially girls, which causes insecurities to fester into every aspect of their lives. Media fuels that. BUT... We don't need any of that to be happy. All we need is to find what makes us happy and gives us inner peace, in Ren's case it's music, and to not be ashamed to indulge and just be happy. That's the message I get from this.

  • @docdurdin

I love your reactions because you don't just go along with the crowd - you think for yourself and you make me think. One thing to bear in mind when it comes to Ren...the guy was in bed for years - imagine not only you or me going through that, but a guy like him with the energy and focus he has - not being able to move around and shake your your feelings off but just being stuck in bed. All the guy could do was think! No purpose, no mobility. You're just gonna think over everything...your stuff, the problems of the world...what else is there to do. Way I see it, now he's feeling a bit better he's going off like a rocket, so I wouldn't worry too much about his mental health. It's tough being an artist - but it's the people who go through chronic illness without a creative outlet that worry me more. At least he can drop all the malaise into a track...I'm going on but thanks for the thought provoking reactions - you have real opinions and a fire energy, and I love the dog!

did we get bullied at school? I'm trans what do you think? I tried to hide it but they just think you're gay... violently beaten up on every single school day for 7 years. Stabbed with a pencil, stabbed with a compass, had someone try to set me on fire in class, had someone stamp on my head multiple times so that even now in my 50s, I can't breathe through my nose because it's been fractured in multiple places and would require completely rebuilding to fix it. I got beaten up so many times that my body adapted to the pain and I stopped feeling it, the violence just became normalised. People today talk about how confident that I am and my ability to ignore the constant hate but the reality is that after being violently assaulted over 1,300 times (and that's just at school - include the stuff outside of school and it must be easily over 1.5k), people calling me bad names means nothing to me.

In the end our skills are fleeting and skill levels are never actually equal. It's the same way for any sport, including eSports.
When you have to exclude people like transgender people from playing sports because of how we focus on winning and losing It sets a stage for discrimination. We should instead just focus on the fun of the activity rather than the winning and the losing.

@petehutcheon5186 no. That's not what I'm saying. Try reading again. People relate to their own lives and experiences. I've watched Kso from when he had a couple hundred followers and I have seen tonnes of his videos. He reacts different ways to different music. Maybe you need to think about why you chose to react to my comment without thinking about context. He consistently reacts more positively to music that he relates to or connects with. Which is understandable. Don't we all? Rens music is often about mental health or social behaviour or greed or stuff like that. Which doesn't connect with Kso. Understand?
