I dont know what to say, i started by watching your videos and i learned hto draw with pencils, i was schocked that i actually can draw something that looks good, of course there were times when i always wanted to give up, but i knew that by giving up i wont achieve anything, so, my biggest problems were: patience, comparing, avoiding mistakes, and of course overcomplicate anything..
seriously, just to anyone reading this: DONT MAKE my mistakes!
so recently, i gave with drawing with pencils, i wanted to start something new, and then i saw a big sketch book and 3 fineliners in a store, and i knew that this is the way i want to go,
and this time, i wont avoid mistakes, i wont overcomplicate stuff, i will be patient and not to be hard on myself.
And again thank you Schaeer art for teaching me so much stuff, and this time i will learn to draw with pen and ink.

Brandon, You're the real deal. Love your line drawings and attention to detail. Also you're so encouraging and filled with common sense and a great approach to getting that drawing started (and finished). The simple approach is usually the best, I agree. Thank you for sharing your great attitude and 'kind and caring' delivery of information. Love that! Keep up the good work.

I try to use ink with watercolor but I don't think I'm bold enough, especially outlining and shading. I'm scared with ink that once the line is down you can't remove it. so I try to get the same effect with layering dark watercolor but the impact is not the same as with ink. I think I probably need to do what you said at the end about experimenting and accepting that some pieces won't be perfect but I'll learn something from them.
I find your videos so mindful!

I know exactly what you mean, I had the same fears too a few years ago. I had never used pen or ink before really. I was using graphite and charcoal. But I found when I started using pen & ink that it taught me a lot of things - because of the permanence. I had to take many risks to create a good piece. And a lot of times, I had to accept the mistakes and keep going or move on. And learn from them.. because it is permanent as you said. It's a great teacher really. You might not even like pen & ink but it's worth trying out a few times and seeing what you like or don't like. It took me over 50 drawings before I even started adding color to them, so I know what you mean about not being bold haha. I'm really the same way. I could experiment way more boldly but I haven't yet. Slowly getting there. Anyways, I hope the art goes well. Thank you for commenting and watching the videos :) Give it a shot and be bold. See what happens. You don't have to show it anyone, just do it for yourself and see what you discover or learn.

Very informative for me eyes are the most difficult things to sketch ….. hope you can shed a bit of light on that

    • @SchaeferArt
      @SchaeferArt  2 роки тому

I usually don't draw eyes in my sketches. I really don't focus on drawing anything. I focus solely on shapes and values. Just see them as shapes. If you want to learn anatomy and such, you can really get into the eye structure and all of that - I know a tiny bit of that stuff - but I usually just stick to shapes.

Hi Brandon, I am a new subscriber and an intermediate artist since I was a child mostly self taught 😊
I love your simple informative instructional videos. This leads me to a question:
I struggle with watercolour and other wet media. What advice do you have for a beginner in this media?

Thanks Brandon for the useful tips ! What I struggle most is keeping the hatching neat especially when the drawing is bigger, if you know what I mean. I like how neat your ink drawings always look and yet it has its own unique style. I also struggled in trying to find simple subject to draw as I always end up picking something way too complex for my level 😅.

Thanks for watching and for responding :) Super greatly appreciated! This feedback is super helpful.
I know what you mean about drawing larger and keeping the hatching neat. I don't tend to draw too large, only 9 x 12 inches or so usually. How large do you usually draw? What size is difficult for hatching for you?
Also, what do you like to draw most of the time? Or what do you gravitate towards for subjects, which are too difficult? Just want to understand further. I don't think you are alone in these problems.

@@SchaeferArt thanks for the reply ! I draw mostly in A4 size. I find hatching difficult when I couldn’t complete each stroke in one single line, especially when the shadowed area is larger. It looks awkward when I attempt to join the lines, and messy when I create multiple lines. I only started drawing in December 2020, but since then, I have been gravitated towards drawing wildlife. I also like to draw non animated objects that has interesting textures like an old wooden door, broken bench etc. Your channel (learn to draw series) are one of the channel that has help me start with learning drawing , and your live session are fun to watch😃. Thanks for for all the effort and time on your channel, greatly appreciated !

Ah okay, so we draw at a similar size. I know what you mean about the hatching and joining lines. Mine are always quite messy haha. I overlap lines and create weird patterns.. but it works sometimes. What kind of hatching do you like to do? Cross hatching? Single hatching? etc..
I appreciate the kind words, glad you enjoy the videos and the livestreams too :) If you ever have any other questions or trouble you run into with drawing, just let me know. I'd love to make more in-depth videos covering these topics.

I would rather have seen your drawings emerge as you spoke rather than look at your face on the screen as you spoke. So your voice could have stayed in the background doing the commentary while we saw you demonstrating while the picture
emerged. That way, we could learn more.
