I live in a senior living community that has an 'art' class. Teacher is 92 year old artist. Students range from 72 (me - 95 yrs). In our class room we have a large screen t.v. wall mounted. I am going to ask staff if they can set up my laptop and play your video. Since our teacher is inspiring us to 'just draw' and have fun, I think your video came at the right time. Our assignment for this week is 'contour' drawing. FUN! Thank you Schaefer for your knowledge, time and sharing your passion. Namaste my friend.
Thanks for the video! Noone has ever said it better. I'm a 17 year old fresh out of highschool, currently learning and someday hoping to be an anime-style illustrator one day. I liked to just collect illustrations until my hard-disk is full and one day the thoughts just came in my head, about me wanting to not only be the enjoying of those great illustration, but also the one who makes them. During the first few days of my drawing practice, I realized how bad my drawings were. And began feeling discouraged when I looked back at illustrations that my favorite artist drew. But then I realized that I'm comparing my mere few days practice, to their years worth of experience. And these great artists are the people who are able to push through those feelings of discourage and keep learning as hard as they can. "Get out of your comfort zone, you're never going to improve" is probably the thoughts that I keep in mind when I'm drawing, if my drawing came out horrible, that means I'm making a mistake somewhere, and I NEED to make said mistake, that's how I was able to improve. I've been drawing for only 3 months now, but during those time I was able to see me making significant progress from not staying in my comfort zone, and I'm excited to see how I will improve from now on. It really is satisfying to see yourself improve on art.
Well said and glad that you are patient and determined enough to keep going and see your improvements as well. Keep at it and don't give up. Enjoy what you do, the rest will follow :)
I feel like I need to come back to this video often! It puts into words what I feel so well, and I'm not just talking about motivation in drawing, but life in general.
The thing that keeps me going every day is just the thought of "you could be this good" and i set in pretty unreachable goals for my self because it makes me pay attention to every that i am learning so that one day i maybe can reach that unrealistic goal
Think about those outside of yourself who can't do what you can, because of disability or no longer living. There is plenty of inspiration and motivation, boredom is an illusion and a delusion.
Consistence is key of success when i saw my first drawings they have lots of mistakes but when i look at my drawings now i see that i have improved too much i still make mistakes but i can feel the joy of drawing. Thanks for video Mr. Schafer i see you try to improve us with practical and mental way and i appreciate it i hope lots of people saw your effort and learn something (Note from myself: My real drawing adventure starts with your video "How to draw circle" and than i learned lots of things.)
Had stumbled upon your UA-cam channel a long time back and your videos really helped me to get into acrylic painting and sketching and I had yet again... recently lost my motivation but this video really helps a lot so just commenting to appreciate and to say a big thank you.
i keep on going in art even if i feel like i want to give up on it simply because i absolutely hate how slow my progress is. like, my improvement in art is so slow, that it's barely noticeable, like a snail crossing a frozen ocean.yet i keep at it because i know i will reach the level of pro one day. the road is going to be harsh, but there's no other way than forward. :)
Thanks for the video and your guidance. I just found your channel. I love to draw and I do oil painting. I am working on motivation and setting a regular schedule. When things happen suddenly, I get out of track. I’m reading the book Art & Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland. I will the book you mentioned. I’m glad I found your channel. New subscriber. Blessings and take care.
How ironic...I just got out my sketch book and sat here for about 5 minutes. Closed with the thought, "I really don't feel like doing this right now", turned on youtube, and low and behold, this video popped up. lol, Thank you. I opened it up, and started practicing anyway. :)
Interestingly, I don’t have the issue with motivation to draw/ paint. I just do - maybe because I am very comfortable being alone, and what do you do when you are alone?- draw and paint like a boss - ha!😊
Commitment rather than motivation... I like that. Not only can I apply this to my daily art practice, but my detestable physical exercise that I need to do every day, lol.
I learn to draw one thing like a single character or a head and when I get real good at it, I continue to expand slowly and surely enough I slowly learn how to draw other things. I dont even need any motivation, it just slowly expands like the british.
Hi Brandon, Life is hard! I hear what your saying. i am having a hard time with my day job.( I am a Very good Jeweler) I feel some growth coming but I am so ready to jump ship and be the artist i no i can be. But with a family its very scary even though I've been a business owner. Thanks for your insight,
I know exactly how you feel Doug, I'm in a very similar situation minus the family but it's still scary to me. I'm just trying to be patient and do my best. Good luck to you my friend, enjoy yourself :)
Thanks very helpful ! Needed to hear this ,and the funny thing is I blame the heat this time of year my art spot is in the attic ,and as I’m typing this an ad came on for wearable AC ,,🥵😂no excuses ,,stay cool and hydrated all ❤️
3:57 uhhhh.... no? And I have had multiple experinces to validate this; henever I have to put effort into something or struggle with it; I'm not happy or relieved, or proud or anything like that when it's done; I'm just angry. I hate it, and I hate myself. The only time I ever feel proud is when I'm finish something that I just waltz through without any effort at all.
So you've never had to overcome any challenges or struggles when entertaining people or making something to capture their interest - whatever that even means.
@@SchaeferArt No; I absolutely have. And the times I do are the ones that it's not as satisfying. The most fulfilling ones, the ones that make me the most satisfaction and joy, are the times that it basically just amounts to me being myself; just doing what comes nigh on instinctually to create or perform for people.

There are things in this life we must do regardless of if we want to or not, that's just reality. So if you have a business based on creativity, and you don't feel creative for a month, what do you do? Just sit around and let you and your family starve? Doesn't sound too good haha. You have to do something and in that doing, your inspiration, creativity, etc. will return. It's in the doing that you can also find these feelings, not only before the doing. Just my perspective and experience, and also what I've heard from other artists as well.
