This guitar is awesome hard to find with Burstbucker Pro pickups I want it
You have some great guitars for sale for sure and I like alot of them Austin but I'm just a basic les Paul player plain or flame top standards. Hope you do well I love your channel. I'm 67 and still playing my les pauls
Wow! What a embarrassing pile of junk, put some money towards guitar lessons rather than fire wood
@@Cycloneshockey94 UA-cam has this cool feature called “The Search Bar”. All you do is put what you actually want to watch in there and it finds you videos that you probably won’t waste time complaining about.
@@Cycloneshockey94 wait.. wait, it has triangle shaped fret markers instead of square ones. Exclusive! 1 of a kind!
I have a 77 RD standard - burst. I bought it for 50 bucks no case in 1980. They said they couldn't give it away and to make an offer. I bought it for the "Fender" longer scale length thin body. Such a weird guitar at the time and still today - but I love it.
Same here. I have a 77 RD Standard that sat on the wall at this store forever, and I bought it for a discount, and love it. It is a dichotomy. It is the most comfortable shape of any guitar I own. But it weights as much as a small truck! A great guitar, all in all.
Didn't offer to just take it for free? Haha
haha!
and by the way, I have a GIbson without a case.
I love these RD Standards. They really missed an opportunity not making a Ghost Signature model.
100% true. Should’ve been their first move
Since Gibson didn't pay attention to most new artists during the Henry J era, Hagström guitars beat them to it when they launched the Fantomen model in 2017.
@@alexl7539 Yep and Hagstrom and Ghost are fellow Swedes. Dunable also makes a killer RD, and so doe Balaguer.
@@alexl7539 it’s fitting though. Swedish band/ Swedish based guitar manufacturer.
@@matthewsolina4920 and swedish pickups with the lundgrens
My first Gibson was a Rd standard, i played it in a Rush tribute band, I was 16. I own all Gibson Rd models, std ,custom and Artist. I love them all. I think they are great guitars different but fun. Great video, nice to see review this black one.
I most associate these guitars with swedish gothic metal band Ghost and also Lee Malia from Bring Me The Horizon
great review Austin
It's amazing that they can't just sell the standard line as it is. And then have a modern or creative line up. Seriously... It's not like anything has changed at all. All they do is just rehash the old and call it new or special edition. I love Gibson and fenders but they don't do anything to challenge the old. Ibanez and Yamaha have been doing really well lately and they are being rewarded for it.
I don’t think Gibson’s fans will let them get any more creative or modern then they already are.
@@fuzzboi2712 that's fine if people want a classic line, which has always been available. But times are different. Non-traditional big boys are catching up. While you do see lots of fenders still (not as much as before), Gibsons are getting much less and visible in newer media. It's just the same old same old.
They're the Harley Davidson of the guitar world. When Harley try to make something that wasn't designed in the 1960s all the fans burst a collective aneurysm, and when Gibson try to sell something that isn't from 1959 the same happens...
@@ryos.5974 I agree. They even kept all the sun bursts. Like how many sun burst guitars do I need? Why is it that they don't build metallic finished guitars. I am saying they need to get some new stuff in. Not just with the studios and the ridiculous robot stuff. The last good improvement was the chambering/modern weight relief and the PLEK. For example, new designs that use simple but different electronics to get the modern players excited. Not that I think it's a good sound, the modern guys seem to really like the scooped chimney octave kind of droning sounds.
I don't see why they don't experiment with putting active parametric eq into the guitar. Being able to sculpt the midrange tones, and use a pick-up blending knob would blow a lot of player's minds.
I got into RD’s because of Ghost with the original Nameless Ghouls (Opus Eponymous-Meliora). IMO the original ghouls had an strange mysterious yet elegant way of composing and playing.
Also worth-mentioning how Infestissumam and Meliora were fantastically recorded, mixed and mastered, every instrument sounds amazing with lots of dynamics.
Greetings from México 🇲🇽🎸
I am actually really curious about trying one of these. I like the unusual shape. Also, I recall that some of the past members of Ghost used RDs (a black and a white one), which was one of the first times I saw a band use this guitar. The ebony finish would be my first choice, but the natural would be my other pick.
They still do (sort of). Nowadays Hagstrom makes the Fantomen, which is basically the same shape as an RD and is an actual signature model, so they play those instead. That shape is still an inseparable part of their whole schtick.
@@Stratplayer05 the black one originally used an SG too, and now the white one uses a fender stratocaster which is quite unexpected but still pretty cool
I love the RD shape, it's super weird but I love it. I'm a fan of valoots though, especially on a Gibson headstock tilt back. I'd love to see a "black beauty" RD with blinged out binding, gold hardware, and three humbuckers! That would be an epic guitar, classic and classy meets funky 70s style
I bet Fluff (from riffs, beards & gear) might enjoy this! Because he loves the rd model.
He doesn’t like the reissues though. These aren’t really true to the original
Always liked this model. Looks gorgeous in black&chrome.
Seems like the original guitarists of the band Ghost , both played this body style . I’ve seen them playing this shape for years now
It's a shame Gibson doesnt keep these in production, by far my favorite body shape on a guitar ever. Ended up getting a Dunable r2 in silverburst rather than chasing down a Gibson.
I have the 2018 reissue with the vintage logo on the headstock and the banner logo on the back. To be honest, it is super comfortable guitar to play, and much more player friendly (IMHO), say, a Firebird.
Same here and i agree, but the GEM pickups are very muddy. Took them out instantly
I don't know why, must be because of Fluff, but I really love the RD's. Always happy to see one 😄
I have a pair of the '07 standards and it's my favorite guitar to play. It balances perfectly, it's a great weight, and the neck is fat and comfortable... and it looks cool as heck. I remember buying the silver ones, hating the color, and being mad a few years later when they did your black ones after I'd already bought my pair.
Would've been cool if the could've come up with it's own headstock variation. Looks like it would be a good base for a baritone. And all that real estate looks like it should have either a trapeze or some sort of tremolo system with a separate bridge. Maybe the person who installed the tuners had the screws in their mouth. I like the tones and a chunky neck doesn't bother me . I'm not much of an explorer fan. I like the RD since the tail isn't as big but would still prefer that relief in that area.
i would have Chosen the gumby moderne headstock to make it extra Goofy
Give it a hockey stick headstock.
I was thinking if they'd do something like Fender is doing with some of the guitars just with the headstock by elongating it diagonally.
@@metalmig Nah, of the possible choices of Gibson headstocks, the Firebird would look the best.
@@xdoctorblindx it's true but it would Look very similar to a firebird
I’ve always loved the RD...just such a classic shape...but I’ve always had a soft spot for the explorer shape...so there’s that !!!
The trouble is that it is Not a 'classic shape' ... It's just a bodge between a Firebird and an Explorer, both of which were not only 'classic shapes', but also 'classic guitars' ...
I have a 2017 Epi Lee Malia RD Artisan and I absolutely love that thing. Indonesian crafted, Gibson Custom Shop pickups stock, lacquered finish, and just such a unique guitar overall. Plays extremely well too, no qc issues at all. I lucked out back in 2020 and got one of the last new old stock models on the market for msrp. They've trippled in price since then. Lucked out again a few months later( EDIT - it is the same exact case Austin has in the video so definitely from this run )and found a TKL Gibson hardshell case that I'm assuming was from this run that matched the 24¾ scale length since the first RDs had the 25½ scale length; got it for only $100 on Reverb! Overall it's my favorite guitar I've ever owned and pretty rare.
If Gibson or Epiphone started producing more guitars like this, then younger artists would be more attracted to their guitars and the brand would lose it's "boomer" reputation that people have been talking about lately especially. Just spotted one of the Lee Malia's on Reverb for over $1000 but it looks amazing with those pickups and the gold fittings, inlays and binding. But then I am a "boomer" so I would love those classy looks... however, take that style and chuck some interesting paint jobs at it like Fender and Yamaha are doing, and make sure there are cheap enough Epiphone versions available for the same price as a standard Revstar or Player and I can imagine the cool young crowd giving them more than just a second look.
Met him backstage after their set at Rockville ‘16. Cool dude. We talked guitars for a little while. Their cart driver was MIA after their set and they were stranded for about 10-15 min or so. Stage manager came out and saw them still there and lost his shit. I had met him earlier and he was friends with my boss so he asked me to drive them back to their dressing room. Oli was going through his woman problems at that time (as was I) and that ended up being a very memorable weekend.
@@martin-1965 yea man it's a bummer that they don't really make much unique stuff anymore, and the bits they do are usually $5k+ Custom Shops that sell out the second they go on sale. My Lee Malia is such a special guitar to me, I love the RD shape in general but adding the Artisan inlays and such just puts it over the top. And yes the pickups are great! Like I said in my oc, the bridge is a fully designed and built Custom Shop pickup, it's called the 84T-LM. The neck pup is a P94 P90 but was also Custom voiced for Lee. Mines finish is less of a walnut like advertised and more so a translucent wine or dark cherry, not too sure why but I honestly prefer it. And yes they sell between $1,000-$1,600 on Reverb. The ones on the lower end usually have neck repairs etc. I only paid $680 and got it new 😁 one of the last ones that were still for sale in 2020. Overall tho for a number of reasons it's my favorite guitar I've ever owned and I've owned tons. It plays amazing, the Indonesian quality control is on par with Mexico at minimum, and everyone always asks me about it when they see it! It's a head turner for sure. They definitely should do more guitars like this I agree 100%
@@presmasterflash7555 that sounds awesome man haha Lee is a cool dude forsure. He also has a lot more talent than what he's unfortunately being made to write for BMTH currently. Their first album has so many great riffs and solos. Sucks that he's been reduced down to just open chugging but BMTH still does put out some good music every now in then. One things forsure tho he reallllly knows how to design a signature guitar haha. He's pretty passionate for tone too. There was a great interview from a few years back from That Pedal Show and I couldn't believe how much thought he puts into his rigs. Really good interview
@@_dmfd You got an absolute bargain there :) and the crazy thing about Gibson is they are really only known outside of the guitar world for one, maybe two, main guitar styles - LP and SG - plus the classic hollow body 335s etc. I'd never heard of this guitar until this Trogly review, but I know all the Fender models, and 100s more. People have been saying Gibson doesn't really care. I mean, the Gene Simmons bass is appallingly finished and - even worse - boring from Trog's last video and Gene is in his 70s - not exactly down with the kids. The guitar you have got is cool but only from Epiphone not Gibson and no longer made of course. I'm sure Gibson will carry on as they are doing and it would take Slash to leave them and go to PRS for them to panic lol, but they are definitely more for collectors like Trogly than players. Oh and you're totally right about Indonesia - making great guitars and even the Chinese models are getting so much better lately.
I liked the bass when it came out but was a little intimidated by the electronics. The model I tried was an RD Artist. They were comfy with the cutaways.
I got one of the grzenia RD styles and its one of my fav guitars. I recommend it if you want an RD style
A very nice 78 RD in natural finish came into my local music shop a couple months ago, one of the employees who is a friend of mine ended up buying it off the owner for a song ($1200 Canadian if I remember correctly) even tho the guy was asking $3k initially, owner just needed the money I guess
Nice improvement in your sound with the Marshall amp. 👍
I remember when the originals came out. The only person I can think of I ever saw playing one is Bob Welch.
Nice. A 78 RD was my first good guitar. Still have it. Plays and sounds great. These new ones might be worth a try. Also got to love the Hagstrom homage to the RD, the Fantomen.
Nice one. I really like the Epiphone RD artisan.
I just bought My first, a blue flame top RD reissue. I LOVE it!!!
Id love to check out one of those Artist LP's. Combining Moog and Les Paul sounds like a match made in heaven. From what Ive read, even back in the 80's and arguably the heyday of synthesizers, people weren't interested in new tecnology on their Gibsons. Amazing how wome things never change. Oh well. Id still love to have one. Oh, while we're at it. Can somoene explain this obsession with being the first to post? I have a feeling that more people would care about an interesting comment than they would someone posting that they are #1.
i have a 79 Artist i ripped the electronics out because it sounded shit broütic and playability asolute dream
The Moog electronics are garbage and not worth your time. Throw in some DiMarzio’s or Duncan’s and you got a rock house
But what do the Moog electronics do? Are they not for Synth effects? I didn't hear it in this video. Did I miss something? I don't see the point of using a Moog board just for normal guitar sounds. Well, maybe it sounds a little different, but not enough to matter.
by far my favorite gibson shape, wish they'd show it some love in the new era, also think it'd look sick with custom appointments like binding and custom diamond on the headstock
Id look into Grzenia Guitars if you want a modern RD
My favorite Gibson have this and a 1978 RD Artist in natural the Artist is 1 1/2 inches thick Austin wish they would do a proper reissue of the 1978 RD standard Cesar has mentioned the RD for future plans but as of yet it remains to be seen these are the extent of my Gibson collection the price has pretty much doubled since I've had them crazy guitar market 👍🤘👏 thanks for all you do Austin love the show watch it every day!
Love the RD's , they sound great( well with the right setup)
I got a custom RD style from Grzenia Guitars and its my favorite guitar. Well built and great customer service
The RD is one of my dream guitars, as well as the Dunable R2
Austin, you have come so very, very far. Bravo! It's been a pleasure to witness.
RD .. with an explorer neck would be kool.
would be so cool if it had a fender scale neck
I agree!
Wow, very nice sounding guitar - nice chime throughout!
Very interesting, looks like something a friend of mine would play.
He's a metalhead.
Sometimes at Gibson they should punch out early.
That thing sounds great I hear some Fender tones. Wow. I hope you keep that guitar dude, cuz that thing is badass.
Really love the shape! I would rock that guitar!!!
The RD is the PERFECT guitar for Me. Mine is a curly maple top transparent blue custom with ebony fingerboard, mother of pearl block inlays and the diamond on the headstock.
It's GORGEOUS!
Those thin plastic protective sheets used on pickguards or cover plates are meant for manufacturing and retail. If left on for years they can marr or leave marks on pickguard or cover plate.
I need that for playing ghost riffs
I first saw the RD bass in the hands of Krist Novoselic (the “Lithium” video, I believe), at least that I recall…it may have even been the “I Ran” video by A Flock Of Seagulls….although I think that was the RD guitar.
I really like the RD's, and it just looks fantastic in black! I'd love to own that!
I have an early, original RD custom. It is black with a maple fretboard.
I like the pickups sound.
Thanks buddy for another great show
Oddly enough, this has been my primary guitar since 2011. It provides more of a lightweight Les Paul feel given the lovely 50's neck (I really do think the body is probably chambered though) and it has very little in common with the 70's RD's, short of the basic shape. This is also not a dupe of the 2007 GOTW Silverburst RD Reissue. Close, but the Silverburst one doesn't have nearly as obvious a wood grain and is quite noticeably a few pounds heavier. The finish here is rather soft and it dents easily. The Burstbucker Pro buckers are fantastic. I dig it. It "thwacks" really well and the shape feels more situated than a Firebird.
I like the RD Offset kinda style bodies.
Reminds me of a more mellow version of my Iceman ICT700
I have a 1979 Rd Artist with all of the original electronics, and while I cannot say that it is one of the Gibson's that I would reach for first, it definitely has its place. It has its cool vibe
I have an all original 1978 RD artist, it's great
A friend of mine owns a 70's RD Artist in sunburst just like the one in the photo at the beginning of the video 😀 And always nice to hear someone pronounce "moog" correctly! 👏😀
Saw a real one last week, 1978 standard
My guitar teacher has an original 1977 Sunburst RD Artist. One of my friends has an original all Maple RD Standard and another friend has an original Sunburst RD Bass
My dream guitar would be to combine the shape of an RD with the construction, pickups and headstock of a firebird (neck through with walnut)
Krist Novacelic of Nirvana is know for using one of these (the bass, obviously).
Really wanted to have one when it came out..8incl Moog
the actual model name is "RD Standard Exclusive"
Always wanted an RD
I tried one of the newer RD basses. Loved it-but it weighed a ton.
a ghost signature model would be a great idea.
I learned on a 1980 RD custom. It had a pre-amp in it that just made my cheesy amp sound worse, but it was cool to pick-out my first Black Sabbath songs on.
I love it!
Hey Austin, great to see you. One of these days I’m gonna contact you to help me decide on the right Gibson to purchase.
Hey i have a epiphone les Paul and its pick-ups have two screwles rows in 1 humbucker and it has two humbuckers so u wanna know what it is for pickup or if anybody else knows in happy for any information
I have a serious want on me for one of these, and have done since I first saw one back in the early 80s
The marshall sound nice..
Ryan Bruce, aka Fluff, over at Riffs, Beards & Gear YT Channel, has long been a fan of the RD guitar shape.
That man needs new testicles. No testosterone at all. Sounds like a schoolboy, plays like an idiot.
The Ghost Guitar.. I like them .
Krist Novoseilic of Nirvana had an RD Bass (at least one of them)… unfortunately that’s the bass he infamously tossed up in the air and caught… with his face. ON LIVE TV! Ow.
I honestly don’t know if any famous guitarists played these.
Nope it was one of his ebony Rippers that hit him in the face at the VMAs. Also there was a brief period at the beginning of Foo Fighters that Dave Grohl played an RD (artist I think?)
I used to have an original ebony-board version that I picked up for like $500 back in '08. I ripped out the MOOG board and put the toggle switch on the horn. It was cool, but I couldn't justify keeping it around when the price went through the roof in around 2011.
Wish I would've kept it around since it's worth twice what I sold it for now!
In the early 1980s my best friend picked up a first year RD that was all Maple.
It was heavy, bright sounding and really cool.
@@hkguitar1984 They're cool guitars, but I could never get used to the tail under my elbow. Same problem I have with Explorers.
Artist!!!!
Pls make an Abasi Concepts review!
So no mention that the band ghost exclusively played these models from 2011 to 2016 or even a riff in the playing demo. Kinda disappointed. Still I'd love to own one of those. Even the hagstrom variation they make now.
Ive wanted one of those since the day I first saw one.
Omg I want that bass model...
Trogly's in the HOUSE!!!
Needs the L5 headstock inlay like the original Artist RD.
Gibson should bring these back without all the electronic Moog BS. Plus at a 24.75” scale - I’d buy one asap. I love the look of them.
These are very similar to the Hagstrom Fantomen that the band Ghost designed, they are fabulous guitars i love mine but this Gibson is very interesting
Absolutely love the basic RD without all the weird plug in effects and gizmos. Would love to see a dressed up black RD with gold hardware and binding. Sort of a black beauty RD. Metal guys really like these, but there doesn't seem to be enough around. Help Gibson!
Grzenia Guitars made one of those basically exactly like that
I wish they do an epiphone RD at some point
at the opening you talking about les paul artist,i think that guitar guy from a band journey got a les paul looks like that, extra switch around that area, i thought that just a modified les paul, so maybe thats factory stock, or not, i just saw the wrong thing.
Not sure what to think about this guitar. Can I be ambivalent?
I bought a used RD Artist in about 1981 and regretted it. The neck never felt quite right and the tone controls were so complex, you could get so many variations, that I had to give up on any kind of switching between one definite sound and another. It was hit or miss. This one had a 9v battery, and that had a tendency to conk out too soon for my taste. There's something to be said for keeping it simple. This thing drove me nuts. I traded it eventually for a slightly used black SG jr-- a reissue, if I recall correctly, going from one extreme to another.
Underrated shape, but I think offset guitars look better with a headstock which is also offset. I think RD would look better with either Explorer's or Firebird's headstock.
I slept on the 40th Anniversary reissues and I’m still sad about it, so I recently bought a Gibson Firebird to make it up for it.
I owned a 77 RD Artist. The neck was real stiff and I never felt comfortable playing it. I don't know if something was wrong with mine, but the Moog positions were largely useless.
This guitar has a beautiful tone to it lots of variation from pickups not keen on shape
Wish i could get my hands on the white 2014 model , none to be found where i am, Gibson !! what did you do !?!?!?!?💘
The one thing I would love to see Gibson reissue but yet all we get is more slash or Adam Jones Les Pauls
Joe Jackson's guitar player played an RD.
8:58 we got a double wide 🚨

The quality of those Gibson guitars were fantastic in 2010
As a die hard SG player i love the look of this guitar
Dunable Guitars do a great take on this shape.
Reminds me of the hagstroms
Hagstrom is the reason I learned about these guitars.
