  • This week on the homestead we are sorting out how to care for the land, I'm growing my indoor plant collection for our cottage, and taking moments of silence to sit back and reflect on the beauty of our simple life here in New Zealand.

Thank you for keeping the clip of you laying in the grass and enjoying a moment “because this is what it’s all about right”. A few days later I was at the park and laid directly on the earth. Then I realized I had picked that up from the behavior you modeled! This moment was so grounding and restful, and led to creative ideas that had been blocked for weeks!
This is why it’s so important to follow people who you share values with! We are a culmination of the people we spend the most time around. 😌😋

Hi Carrie.... maybe you could look at getting a goat... baby goats are adorable and great for keeping grasses chewed low 🙂 loving yours and Alex's vids ...ps ... goats give milk ...make great goats milk feta and soap ...could be some fun projects for the future 😃

Also, a house cow might help (if you have the means for that). Cows have much longer tongues so they love the longer grasses. 😊 these are such fabulous videos.

The amount of homesteaders who have kept goats and the goats have killed themselves is quite amazing… they eat everything (poisoning themselves) and have a habit of getting caught in a lot of things… they’re cute but need 24/7 cctv 😂

Hi Carrie! I've been loving the vlogs lately :) just a quick note, it'd be great if you could make the music a little quieter in the parts of the videos when you're not speaking. i find that i often have to turn the volume up and down because the music is a little loud

With the age of your house you probably have a tonne of Rimu and Kauri in there. Kauri is the other native timber that was used a lot in construction and furniture building and it's rare and valuable now because felling of old growth was banned in 1985. Your doors are probably Rimu or Kauri.
Please please make sure you're wearing sunblock when you're soaking in the sun. NZ sun is much harsher than a lot of places and we have incredibly high skin cancer rates.
Caladium goes dormant in the winter so if it all dies back don't panic. Mitre 10 has great specials on Caladium this time of year, cause they're at their best so people see how spectacular they are and buy up. See if you can get to a Bunnings at some point, they often have larger plants at cheaper prices, though your closest is probably Petone in Lower Hutt so maybe if you take a day trip into Wellington?

If you dont want to cover up the floors, why not buy large room rugs that will keep the rooms and your feet warm, but not be permanent?
Also if you are going to lay around in the grass, (and you look great BTW), please make sure you have on some sunscreen. The NZ sun can be quite strong!!
I fell asleep for several hours one summer in NZ wearing a swimsuit and my back and the backs of my legs were really burnt. Took me days to get past the pain.

    Re sheep in an orchid...
Actually you are likely to find that the sheep prefer feeding on the trees.
So keep an eye on that, and think/plan on managing that.
Or they might end up stripping your trees.

Hi Carrie. I too have hard wood floors throughout my old (and COLD in winter) home. I couldn’t bring myself to fully cover my wood floors with carpets so I opted for large area rugs and they significantly warmed the space and helped my feet from feeling so cold. I also wear sheepskin slippers in the house - year round - because I love the cozy feeling. But the rugs do help significantly.

With the pot plants I always put some river rocks around the bottom of the pot then normal dirt from the land and sometimes potting mix on the top for looks. I personally see buying potting mix a waste of money when we have such amazing soil here. But I hate spending money on anything I can get free or cheap lol.
Lots of our style houses are just built from rimu and kauri. It always looks really stunning when people strip the paint off the windows and doors for the beautiful native timber as it gives a warm earthy feeling along with the floors.
Every animal has a preference for grass length lol, it was such a strange thing to learn when I did my first homestead. Having any animals around fruit trees is not the best idea as I’ve seen drunk goats from fermented ground fruit and also arsenic poisoning due to the stones in the fruit containing this deadly compound. Also some fruit bark is also poisonous. The things u learn aye. Btw a weed whacker is a good investment to have on a rural property to take down any long grass so u don’t screw ur mower and also for the smaller places a ride on or tractor can’t get to. Also the birds in the roof should leave once the chicks are all out of the nests, just dam the holes before next spring.
    Love ur work.

I save some polystyrene from packaging and place chunks of it in the bottom of big pots over the drainage hole before I put the compost in. This retains water and saves on having to fill the whole pot with compost.🌱🌱🌱

oh man - I don't know about the carpet. I'm loving my wood floors now all through the house. Even in the bedrooms and it snows here. We have underfloor heating but still - even so, I would totally go for something really cool and regional and get these giant beautiful sheepskin rugs to put under my feet on the sides of the bed. Would be gorgeous and so perfect. Carpeting is the bane of my existence. Dog dirt, dust, just think about it. xoxo

Hi Carrie, I'm loving your videos. growing up in Canada I definitely have started to appreciate the insulation of a house. Having a full carpet floor is super hard to clean especially living very rurally. have you guys thought about just getting big rugs for the bedrooms? easier to clean but will also help with insulating and you can still have your beautiful floors.

Hi Carrie. If my memory of terracotta pots is correct they and their water holder should not be put directly on wooden floors. I think it is because it is pours and breaths.. it would be a shame to stain the native Wood floors. Also going back on a memory of my childhood we sanded and repaired all the floors in our home, and had to replace a few boards. Each board had to be pre drilled before being nailed down because the wood is too hard and either splits or the nails just bend instead of driving through the floor. Of course this was before nail guns.

Watched the video with your friend Charles sanding and polyurethaning the Rimu kitchen bench. This is a personal, subjective, taste critique . Firstly it was great he got the marks of the bench with sanding and it looked brilliant. Pale and natural. Then... I had to hold my breath.... because as I watched, saw him layering on that plastic coating. Even though I prefer wax, polyurethane, works really well on surfaces that get a lot of use. This wasn't my gripe. It was, suddenly, that beautiful pale wood turn into an orange/yellow eye-sore. Here's the problem with Rimu...it's colour.
Some may like it but personally I find it waaaaay too strong and 1970's. It can over-power everything. Also as polyurethane ages... it can discolour and make things even more saturated. I will not let a piece of Rimu furniture in the house... let alone have to deal with it on the floor. A lot of floors here are made with it. Here's is a suggestion if you, possibly, want a more neutral palette. Once you have sanded the floors. wipe an area with water and see what colour it goes. That is the what you will end up with. If you want a different feeling, there are paint-washes to put on the wood, before you polyurethane, giving a colour you may prefer. It is only a styling suggestion. Everything looks more modern when you neutralize it. Those orange/yellow Rimu floors can really overwhelm a room, clash with rugs and other things. 🤗
