This is a video about how to re-spool or re-line a Ryobi 18V One grass trimmer.
The line is 0.65mm thick, and for this video, I used a (newer?) type of 'threaded' line, which I think should be more durable.
I bought my Ryobi electric weed whacker at LEAST 10 years ago. Ive never had a problem with it. The string feed works like a champ. I was a bit dubious buying electric but admittedly at least for a weed whacker around the home it really is the way to go.
Thanks, man. I’ve been trying to figure this thing out longer than I’d like to talk about.
Same here…
Yep. Not proud of how long this took me.
Lmaoooo!!! Seriously. Been sitting here just staring at it for at least an hour. The key here was that hole in the bottom...which you never see in the pre-spooled assembly. This makes my life so much easier. THANK YOU!
My pleasure! I'm happy it helped!

Thank you for this! I was having a hell of time getting mine to work. Reading the comments that others have shared my frustrations (including it spitting out spool at a ridiculous rate) is really heartening.
Thank you so much I was in the middle of a job. As I own my own lawn care business, my Weedwhacker ran out of coil, and I had no clue how to recoil it, so I searched this video up and help me out a lot. Thank you so much.
Glad it helped! Good luck with the business!
They say it's the operator and not the tool. I bought this Ryobi and just love it! And then the spool ran out, I re-did the bobbin and then it stopped "working". I had an old Sears Home brand and after watching this, for years I have been doing this completely wrong. Thank you for the instruction! Be nice if manuals wrote out what do instead of putting pictures.
Every time when I forget how to open the top of the string area, I come back to this video. Thank you!
My pleasure! Glad it helps!
Thank you! I just removed old spool and replaced with a new one. Your video was exactly what I needed. Sometimes you get a DIY video where it turns out the guy is teaching their 8 year old kid while the viewers groan, yell and scream no no no LOL.
Thank you! I've watched others, yours has been the best by far. Appreciate the detail.
Thank you for the nice comment!
woot !!! got mine workin now !!! different model but I followed your instructions with same logic ~~
Glad it helped!
Dude thank you. It’s been a struggle to figure this out.
I received mine used as a gift with no instructions. Thanks bunches!!
Thanks again buddy. Had to refresh my brain from last year 🤦
Thank you, very simple. Greetings from Germany
Excellent, thorough illustration, commentary and recap!
Thank you I have to do these things now and it helped me so much!
Thanks for the detail in your explanation, very didactic!
Let's replace the term divit with notch.. I am curious how many people encounter their wheat trimmer line what they call welding on itself so it stops feeding. Any advice or tricks to help prevent the line from interweaving itself and becoming what they referred to as welded?
Spool keeps unwinding? I made a video about the probable solution: ua-cam.com/video/339wJE8b4dA/v-deo.html
2:34 I think a critical error is often made during the 1st step of the process: the new cord/line/string first enters the empty spool in the little 'notch' or 'hole' of the empty spool, and then the cord is wrapped in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION from that inserted line, so back on itself. You insert the line into the spool a couple of inches and then wrap the cord BACKWARDS to the direction it's inserted in the spool. For example, if the new line, when inserted into that hole runs in a 'clockwise' direction, wrap the cord going 'counter clockwise', so reverse the direction of the cord. This is what holds the line in place and keeps the spool from unravelling. When inserting the cord, it should only be able to insert into the hole in one direction, so wrap the entire new spool backwards across that first insertion, the opposite way.
Good man! Haha just struggled with this yesterday, and this was the step I was missing.
This comment was the best help. Thanks!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!
heyit'sjosh....
You are right about inserting it on the spool, I wrapped that flucker around that bitch like stripper wraps her legs around that pole...but due to unfortunate circumstances .... suddenly it got disrespectful and decided to UNRAVEL ...and down went my motivation like saggy titties on a tweaker....
I still can’t get it so that my spool doesn’t unravel?
Thanks!!! I learned so much from this.
Finally some understandable help. Thank you
I’m glad it helped!
Thanks for the video. I thought the string supposed to have two ends to cut.
Thanks for the tutorial!
"Christ on a slippery Ritz cracker" 😳
I have been using my Ryobi for about three or four years. I wind my own spools. Recently though while using it it’s been wrapping around the bottom and not feeding. It’s jamming up because it’s inside the works. I am not winding it to ride this just started happening recently
Thanks I was spoiling it in the wrong direction
My pleasure! Glad it helped!
Appreciate this video so much.
Very helpful, thank you!
Thanks mate!!
No problem 👍
Thank you
worked for me... thanks
Glad it helped!
Thanks
Just refilled my spools and I’m finding the spool unraveling after I stop then start again. I have to open it back up and rewind the line. The line is nice n tight when I start. Any tips on what I’m doing wrong or what I should do?
Same thing with me i think its because i got the cheap one $3
It's because when you insert the line into the notch in the spool, don't wind the cord in the same direction it goes into the notch. Instead, once the line is set in the notch, wind the spool in the opposite direction.
I’ve been trying the thicker diameter string but it tends to get stuck. Might have to look into thinner string.
I think the manual says 0.06" but I use 0.065" for the 18V, as I've never seen 0.06" before.
This helped so much, thank you
You da man!
THANK YOU
Saco el hilo luego se corta no se que hacer😢
Good vid! Through! Thanks 😊
Thanks its not in the enclosed manual
I would rather have the ones you bang on the ground for it to come out I bought one of these before and I have one now and it's electric and when they f****** they're f***** the string won't quit feeding itself so every time you turn it on it just while it's spinning it's constantly just starts feeding string and then you end up with like a whole foot of string sticking out of the f****** thing it's annoying
Same thing is happening to me 😂😂
Same thing is happening to me 😂😂
What size twine?
0.065" for the 18V weed whacker.
Hello… I am a 70 year old widow who has never even used a Weedwhacker before. But I am so proud of myself because after watching your video I was able to restring the spool and it works absolutely beautifully. Thanks.😊
This has been my favourite comment I’ve ever received! Thank you so much, and I’m glad the video helped you! I wish you all the best!!
Thanks
For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.
I feel like such an idgit for not looking this up before cussing out Huz & kicking my dog. Jk the puppies are ok. 😝
This weed whacker is gods payback for the sins of man. Thank you soooooo much
If you say so...
You couldn't have said that any better dude !
Thank you so much! I’m a single mom and haven’t been able to figure this out for MONTHS. I got it! And finally got the yard done right! 💪🏻
So empowering isn't it! 😁
Me too! Haha! 🎉
Why the string keeps coming out I rewire correct any time I or every a few seconds I looked or stops seeing long string?
Isn't it funny how a video about replacing weed whacker line can get hundreds of thank-you comments? Adding mine to the pile 😊
Thanks man this is my first weed eater I've ever used my father passed away before he could teach me so thanks for helping me
Sorry about your Dad...
Same. My dad just passed away too and I'm teaching myself how to use this Ryobi One + out of the 4 weedeaters laying around in his shop.
Some of us don’t have anyone to show us and this worked perfectly! Thank you so much
Is there a way to Make the spool stop coming out? Mine is letting out string every time I press the button and it’s wasting a lot
I wish I had this problem lol. I seem to break string often as I get close to rocks and tree stumps. I would say a solution is to wind the string really tightly. When I've done this, the auto-feed doesn't work as well and I manually have to extend the string.
I have the same issue, the string just keep coming out and even if I put it back it comes back out again, it's frustrating
Same problem. I'm pissed
That's the opposite of me too. If I wrap it even slightly too tight or it gets hung up it doesn't feed. This design absolutely sucks.
Same, it just keeps coming out.
Hey man. Seriously. Stop saying buttons like that.
Thank you. I’ve been struggling with this all summer and finally looked it up. So freaking happy people like you do this for people like me! Thanks!!
Clear explanation and informative how- to video. Thank you‼️💯👍
It advances every time you stop!?!?!?!? THIS IS A MAJOR FLAW. I stop the motion of the string at least a dozen times while cutting-to rest, to see what I need to cut next, to switch from trim to edge, to save the battery between areas needing cuts while walking to that area. This trimmer sucks
Exactly, it's like a scam where they make you have to buy more string. Anyone know if the Speed Feed 400 head will work on this? I laughed the first time I saw this Ryobi with only ONE line coming out of the head and not 2.
Thank you so much !!! This works for the HART weed eater as well .They use the same spool .This is saving people money .Thank you for your video .May God bless you always .
Mine has a feed handle that will feed the chord. This was how it worked when I first got it, but after replacing chord I can't get it to work again. Any advIce
same here… the string keeps getting sucked in 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
Loved it. So simple, concised, and illustrated. Thank you so much.
Thanks! First time for repooling my first weed wacker and it was easy peasy!
2:34 THIS is where I kept messing up. I watched your video like 4 times, each time overlooking the initial reverse and having to unwind my incorrect job. I finally got it though thanks to you. You're so sick for making this tutorial, I learned a valuable skill by watching, so thank you.
Thanks for the nice comment, and I'm glad it worked out for you!
Thank you for the demo. It was the "snap" part that was messing me up. I had the string completely inside the spool, so I had to pull it out and thread it again. Then I put it back in...but when I started it back up, the string kept flowing out. UGH. I watched your video and noticed how you snapped the spool back into place. VOILA!
Thank you so much I have been threading wrong for years didn't see the hole on the core thank you. I didn't know about the other features.😢
I'm glad it helped!
Thank you !
I am so tired of asking my neighbour or husband to change the line for me 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great video - thanks! So much cheaper than buying the pre-strung spools!
Hey Josh! Thank you so much! I ran out of string this evening and every single summer I forget how to re- string my whip r snip!! Great video😊 xoxo D
People like you, who take their time to make how-to videos for those of us that are mechanically impaired, ROCK. I see you have a couple hundred comments, but I'd bet you've informed thousands of others like me. Not only did I learn how to change the string spool, I also found out you could simply refill the empty ones! No, I did not know that. You probably think that's crazy but I'm not the only one. Anyway, your video couldn't have been any more clear (even for me) or explained any better. Thanks so much for your super informative instructions. ROCK ON!
Thank you so much for the nice comment! I’m glad the video was helpful!
You made me look like a pro this summer! Salute to you thanks!!
Glad it helped! Thank you!
It didn't take long at all, after watching this. Thanks a lot, bought store brand strings and was able to make it work.
Thank you so much! I am a lady that does all my lawn care myself and this was very helpful and will save me so much oney instead of buyng the ready made spools.
Thank you, Josh. I am a widow who hates lawn work (my husband loved it), but am stuck doing it. Thanks for making this easy to follow!
You are so welcome!
❤
I bought this green spool yesterday before seeing this video because it’s way cheaper than buying those 3 spools. Good video thanks.
I got one, I conclude that it's a piece of junk. The cutter blade housing gets broken off by the string, and it is un-repairable as it broke off the plastic housing that holds the blade in place by a screw. This happened to TWO nearly identical trimmers. Why isn't the shroud made of metal so it can withstand getting whacked by the string? Now if I put string back in it with no blade the string will just keep getting longer and longer every time I start and stop it because I now have NO blade to keep it trimmed. If this were the old fashion type that a knock on the ground extends the string I could still use it. This trimmer a piece of JUNK! I looked about at HD at all the trimmers and did not see any that were made of metal so I did not bother to probe any further and settled for this pos.
Please make videos for a living. Straight forward, specific. You are the bomb!!!!!!!!!
Tatatatata
Thanks dad 🙏❤️
Why haven't I done this before? I'm so stupid. I've been paying like close to $30 dollars for refills. This will save me so much money
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! I was getting so frustrated only finding what look like a double spool for a 40 v, when I'm sitting here with a single spool!. It seems like it would be so freaking simple, made it that much more frustrating. I appreciate the clear and concise directions and the visual to go along with it you did a good job
Thank you for the nice comment!
I have a box of spools that is lost somewhere in my 10x15 storage unit. I probably won't find them until I move to a new area. This video saved me so much time and money. Thank you my friend!!!
Thank you so much. I was putting the string in through the rectangular space not the hole and I didn’t realize that the little holes were just to store it; that it stays free while running it.
Thanks you for sharing and teaching us all how to do this. Fantastic teaching and instructions / steps in the process, that are easy to follow. Appreciate it and you! Just as a totally kind note, and you’re prob. Already aware, maybe see if you can kick down the audio a little so it doesn’t get a bit distorted etc.
Well done on the video - showing the close ups and each critical step - appreciate it
My pleasure! Thanks for the nice comment!
Mine unravels into the head, how do you stop that?
I think it's breaking off very close to the head, so you must be moving the head very close to whatever you're trying to cut grass around. I would say, keep the unit head farther away and work your way in/around the desired area - don't just go right in.
I would rather have to bang it on the ground. It feeds too much with trigger release and always tangles
Incredibly helpful tutorial thank you!
So glad I found thus. Been doing it wrong and backwards
Thanks! I'm sure dad in heaven is proud of me!
-San Francisco fan girl
Thanks this was very help full and learned a lot I couldn’t figure it out until this video thanks a lot
Thanks, was helping my mom when I needed to figure this out. Great video, very helpful
Seriously didn’t know these had spools I have been wrapping around the head part that stays and very carefully putting the top back on.
Thank you so much buddy you go nice and slow for me and I can understand what you're saying I always forget how to do it and thank you so much again I saved your video
Thanks for the video!! I was Looking at something that I know was simple but didn’t know if I was doing it right. You saved me a good amount of time!!!
Exactly what I needed to see! Thanks for taking the time to present this video.
Glad it was helpful!
I don't know why they have the word 're-wind' on top of the spool with an arrow next to it - are we really 'rewinding' ? or are we 'winding' or are those supposed to be the same thing or are winding and rewinding the same thing in which case why don't they just use the word 'wind' since it makes more sense?
Mine keeps extending the line which is causing it to get caught around the motor idk why it’s doing this and I can’t trim my yard because of it
Thank you so much!!!
Awesome vid! I've been looking for this. Thank you! (5/30/23)
Ryobi's instruction book is virtually useless. Thanks for this video.
I was wondering what the extra notches are for. Thanks for showing it. They are used only for storage.
Hi..good vid but am unclear on 1 thing..
When im ready to use the spool(ie not storing it) do i remove the string from the groove?
Thanks
Yes, remove the string from the groove and slip the string through the opening hole in the weed whacker head at the same time that you lower the spool into the head. You don't want the spool going over top of the string when you put it in the head, or it will bind: you want the string to go into the head parallel with itself, so that the line wound around the spool is parallel with the end of the string. If you kept the string in the spool's groove then the string wouldn't come out as it breaks off while using it. The way this whacker works is that simply by letting off the trigger and then starting it back up again, more line is fed out, so when I trim around rocks or whatnot, which breaks some of my string, I simply take my finger off the trigger, let the head stop spinning and then hit the trigger again and more string comes out. Best,
Just received an old weed whacker with no instructions, this video helped, thanks
