Phil is a dark dude, he had admitted in interviews there was a lot of hurt in his life, but he definitely used it to fuel his lyrics and singing. Also, he was a heroin addict and an black-out alcoholic. I think he’s a good guy when he’s sober. ✌🏼
I don't think he's that dark. Dude is always cracking jokes and cutting up. He has had a lot of struggle in his life, sure. He's had dark periods. He writes about dark stuff sometimes, but that's just him being honest about life. There are some dark themes, but I find as many positive messages in Pantera's music, about being strong and confident, about loving yourself and others, about being determined and directing your energy into what makes you happy. It's real, though, so it's got color and shade and nuance to it, like real emotions do, and it's skull-crushing music, so...

THE ALBUM COVER: The album's cover is a photo of a man being “punched“ in the face and was shot by photographer Brad Guice, who also shot the photo for the Cowboys from Hell cover.[17] The band told their label that they wanted "something vulgar, like a dude getting punched".[17] The first version of the cover that the label brought to the band showed a boxer with a boxing glove, but the band did not like it, so the label produced a second version, with the bare fist.[17] A popular rumor that was stirred up by Vinnie Paul was that the man on the cover was paid $10 a punch and was hit in the face a total of 31[24] (Rex Brown claiming 32)[25] times to get the right picture.[17] However, Guice dispelled this when he confirmed that the man, who was a hired model named Sean Cross, was never actually hit.
