Man, this is a great sounding jazz. Fender actually hit the nail on the head with this model, especially in the bridge pickup tone. It is very 60's sounding. Niiiiicccce.
>counter-intuitive You know what, I take that back. The 70's position seems to offer more than just a nice popping sound. The lowest frequencies seem to be accentuated, creating a really nice DEEP sound. Perfect!
@DreadAlert - Thanks. Wide open means all the way up. The tone control is a filter that basically roles off the high end. Wide open means "full treble".
Hard to say which is BEST. The 60s and 70s J are different categories in my opinion. These are both available in different price ranges. It seems obvious that the more expensive models would be better than the less expensive ones, but I think it's safe to say that they are all worth what you pay for them. A personal favorite of mine is the Road Worn Jazz, I have one, and have tried many. They are consistently great - light, and resonant.
nice Jazz but I think I will hold onto my 97 Am Std Jazz. Great tones!!! Its great to appreciate all different types of basses but the Jazz does have a special place in my heart. It was my first bass that I bought and still have her
Killer slap tone from the neck pickup soloed! (from both pickups together too, but this can be rightfully expected). About the "tug bar": seems like the only person playing with his thumb and actually using the original finger rest, was Brian Wilson from Beach Boys...
@alhnbp - Glad you are enjoying the videos. I am not able to fulfill your request as I only do reviews that I get hired to do. They don't happen by request. Sorry.
Damn it Fender! I really want the stacked knobs! ...I'm definitely gonna have to build a Stacked Knob J. (But...it'll probably have Dark Star pickups!) And nice alliteration at the end there, Ed!
@BassGuitarMag my favorites are: ease of playing = "he's a plane" and jaco pastorius = "top of that story is" also that one about the posse flex rods adding rigidity is pretty good. Nice review at any rate. Love your playing on the Big Al 5 preview too.
norin02, I might be wrong, but I think it's because back in the day, people used to pluck the strings with their thumb. So your fingers would rest there and give you more stability when you pluck.
@henry12350 - hmm. Tricky question. I suspect it has to do with whatever you play your bass through when using headphones. Headphones have different impedances, and that effects how they match up to the hardware. Maybe.
This is the first time seeing the bass without its pickup/bridge covers. And nice! 70's pickup position! Just naturally assumed it would be 60's spacing with it being alder/rosewood. Wonder if this is counter-intuitive?
@tomdante58 - My reviews will now be in Bass Player magazine, I've asked about the Blacktops, but I just got a bunch of other things in from Fender... no Blacktops.
@henry12350 - Well, it may just be a mismatch. If they sound good on your computer, then you may need to find another pair that work with your amp. I can't tell you anything more specific because I don't know the output impedance on your headphone output.
@jpuckett1989 Well, it's just a matter of how I set the amp. I'm not really a rock dude, so I tend to go for a clean sound. You can add some grit to the amp and make it edgy, I just didn't do that.
@achickensandwich - I didn't know what you meant, but I looked around. Do you mean the machine generated captions? I just found those, hilarious! I guess people are still useful for something.
@MikRound11 - I only demo the stuff I get paid to do. But there is a written review I did of an Elrick Expat at bassemporium [dot] com. Look under "resources" then "newsletter". Scroll down to find the review.
This is a nice bass, indeed. I was looking to add a Jazz Bass to go along with my Precision Bass, this might be the one. Is this bass made in Corona California, along with the Fender American Standard Basses?
Hi Ed! In your video review you miss an Elrick bass!!! Please, Can you make an review of this instrument perhaps with single coil and dualcoils? Thank you. A Fan from Italy.
Hey Ed, I'm really considering one of the new blacktop basses, but I'm not willing to drive all the way to the only store in m general area that has them, without hearing them first. could you maybe review those sometime soon?
hey ed. i have a fender american jazz (maple fretbaord). it sounds pretty nice when i play it out of an amp. but through headphones it can sound harsh in the mids and way to high. i cut the highs and high mids, but it does not seem to help much. maybe its my headphones? im not sure as when it comes out of an amp it sounds fine. do basses normally sound much different through headphones im asking this here as this fender jazz sounds great in the same headphones i use for my bass.
Hey Ed, I'm really looking for a professional opinion on this, 'cause where I'm from, there aren't many DIFFERENT Jazz basses around, in fact most GOOD instruments are shipped in or brought in abroad. So I wanna know, what really IS the best J-Bass? This re-issue? The standard '70s Jass Bass? The American Standard? And is the Fender Standard really all that different? I'd appreciate a pro opinion on this, 'cause the only J-Basses I've seen here are the Fender Standard, and they're pretty weak.
Likely not the case. I think sound compression (Whether it be UA-cam, or the video editor's fault) is likely the culprit. Even 60's and 80's jazz basses sound far more characteristic of the classic tone, even though they sound more 'thumpier' than a 70's jazz, due to its pickup placement, as Ed explains in the video.
Love your videos Ed. You're like a fountain of bass guitar knowledge!

That tone is soo smooth!
@DreadAlert - Thanks. Wide open means all the way up. The tone control is a filter that basically roles off the high end. Wide open means "full treble".

your technique is flawless with pickstyle

@efzt - They did put the bridge pickup in '70s position on this bass.
@Martiluk1
Yeah, I really love how it tries to deduce words from Ed's playing. Pretty inspiring!
@alhnbp - Glad you are enjoying the videos. I am not able to fulfill your request as I only do reviews that I get hired to do. They don't happen by request. Sorry.

ohh yeah~~ Geddy Lee!!! I've just bought his signature jazz bass~~ soo good~
norin02, I might be wrong, but I think it's because back in the day, people used to pluck the strings with their thumb. So your fingers would rest there and give you more stability when you pluck.
amazing slap tone
That black LW 4 string slaps pretty good. I'll get to it.
I love my jazz bass
Thanks.
@awsnap300 - I'm not sure... there is a book that details all that stuff, I think it's called Beatles Gear.
@BassGuitarMag i play it through a fender rumble 60. the headphones have a normal input jack that you'd use with an amp ( NOT the small ipod kind).
its too beautiful
@henry12350 - hmm. Tricky question. I suspect it has to do with whatever you play your bass through when using headphones. Headphones have different impedances, and that effects how they match up to the hardware. Maybe.
Old man, you rock!!
Good Job!
He has used Moon for quite a while, but.... back in the day - he played a Fender Jazz.
Ed, I gotta say, you are rocking a mean goatee
@elgatocachete2 - sorry but I don't remember what I did. I just turn the knobs until it sounds right.
So basically, this bass is an old broad with a big muff ... :P Sounds great, looks good and superb playing as always. Thanks for the review.
This is the first time seeing the bass without its pickup/bridge covers. And nice! 70's pickup position!

Thanks sonny boy.
Sounds great. The JB is my prefrece. =)

@MrBassGuy613 - Asia is a pretty big place, I have no idea.

It would be so much more awesome if it had a neck binding. But still a very good bass.

YEEEAAAAHH
What does Treble wide open mean? Completely off?
Also - Lovin the review man.
@elgatocachete2 Watch the vid in HD and full screen, they're pretty easy to see
@afeschyn - optical illusion
Ed,
When you show the back of the bass It looks like only 3 of 4 strings are strung through the body. While only three? Thanks.
@Njp2K9 No idea
i have a fender bass thats shaped like a jazz has a 70s jazz bass neck but the pickups are mini humbuckers any idea what model it could be (:
what is the exact pick up spacing between the bridge pick up and the bridge???

Hi...cool demo Ed!!...maybe this limited run is already sold out meanwhile, but do you have any clue about the prize of this one?....thanx!
i hav the same bass except in black and its a squier
nice bass
Aw, cool!
@norin02
Sorry, I replied before I saw the whole video and Ed kind of answers the question later on.
Oh ok. I was beginning to wonder if It came strung with flats or something. I was expecting to hear more of the tone the classic vibe jazz.
Likely not the case. I think sound compression (Whether it be UA-cam, or the video editor's fault) is likely the culprit. I think this is the perfect jazz bass. Too bad it was a limited run.
That could be a Fender MusicMaster
very very nice! =) im guessing it cost an arm and a leg
What do you think about fender rumble combos?
Sure, it's a killer bass. And... a limited edition.
@inuyashaspet , Nah, it's not counter intuitive. It's cool!
what's the name of this music?
Maybe a Elite Bass or a Squire Bronco.
Could be a Modern Player Jazz
how many frets on this baby?
The neck is different.
duff mckagan
dudah,believe me it's wort of weating!
Sounds a little too tame to me. I expect a little more growl from a jazz bass.
RATM!!
not bronco sorry just Squier
