- Ed Friedland - The Bass Whisperer demonstrates the Lightwave Saber SL fretted 4 string bass. This is the second in a series of videos on the Lightwave product line. For more information, go to www.lightwave-systems.com.
It sounds absolutely beautiful playing with chords.
For such a hi-fi bass it seems like it sits in the mix really well.
That slap riff is KILLER!!
I was able to pick up the 5 string Lightwave Saber SL at a great discount (only $180.00) because the bottom string was not being amplified. While watching your video, I tried the tiny allen wrench adjustment you showed and the dead strings sound came right on! I now have a perfect functioning bass that I got so cheap I literally feel like I stole it! Thanks for your excellent video, it was just what I needed!
Lightwave basses are as good as they seem in this great demo. And yes, they sound great in hard rock and metal, too. But what blew us away was the clean, piano string-like tone and sustain beyond anything a magnetic pickup could ever do. If you visit MusicPlayers dt com you can read our in-depth reviews of the Lightwave basses, but I can't post a link in the UA-cam comments...
@sspiletones - The VL also has different body wood I believe - go to their website to learn more about the features. The SL has the same electronics so the essential tone is the same, but wood does make a difference in how a bass sounds.
problably the smoothest sound ever
@Haydeosmith - No they're from California. I believe they are selling on Amazon.
great review, this looks like a great change in bass industry!
Great slap tones Ed - you sure are a great slapper!
Ed, you're my hero! That Regge Man thing just made my night. And Great review too, light waves look like amazing basses.
Awesome as usual! I'm also interested in that ShuttleMax 12 you're playing that through. =D Can't wait for that review as well!
@lummond - that really depends on the individual bass and the desired tone... My Jazz with a J-Retro has sweepable mids... I typically leave it flat for slap, but will boost the lowest setting for fingerstyle.
I'm not really convinced by the finger tone, but the Harmonics and the Slap tone are great!
Nice review, as usual!
@dnkan - I haven't played the Zon/LW but I do remember that. For a while LW was making pickup systems only and different builders were putting them on their basses. Now, they make the entire bass.
@MuttonAndTheHam - Somehow, I'm not worried about them running out of magnets. Fret buzz happens. In this case, I put the action fairly low for slapping, and so you get some buzz. It bothers some folks more than others.
Super review again Mr F!!
@6y298 - Well, I think the reggae and Motown examples show the bass is capable of deep, dark punch as well as crystal high end. It's definitely a unique bass, it's NOT a Fender, but it can cover some of the same ground.
that was really good. a very tech bass. nice
@then00best - I haven't thought about that. I'll have to look into it.
Bass Emporium! I was there the other day to get some strings and an overdrive pedal!
@jmattbassplaya90 - the neck profile is very slim, and fast - very much like an Ibanez feel.
I can't wait to see your review of the ShuttleMax 12.0. I picked up one of those a while back and love it, but would love to hear how you make it sound. It's really loud just coming outta my GB NEO 212X, so I can't imagine what it'll sound like through your rig.
that is a God like slap tone! that bass is built for slap!
"Put... it in the hole and just do it until it sounds right"
Why Ed, I never knew you got so... *comfortable* with your review basses! Is this how you started playing Music Man - that Sterling would refuse to take back the loaner basses? ;-)
@JeroB666 They do make them in the custom shop. But they only do it for their spacebass which is around 3k
@vsmcax1007 - Well, maybe Bass Gear mag might go for it. I don't think Guitar World would because he's a smaller company - they tend to go for the big names for bass stuff. But I agree, Lull makes some very nice basses!
NICE. I got all kinds of bass envy now.
That alien video still creeps me out after 20 years damn it...
Hey Ed great videos! I'm not sure how much leverage you have with manufacturers for requesting basses to sample but it would be great to see you try out the different basses from: Mike Lull, based in Bellevue, WA. There seems to be an almost criminal deficiency of information on them available online..thanks for all your great work!
@andyKCIUK - I haven't tried lots of different strings on these basses, but I'm told that you can hear the difference.
This question's unrelated to this bass specifically, but this video made me think of it - when you have a semi-parametric/sweepable midrange like on this bass, what's your preferred frequency to boost or cut?
Almost sounds like a synth bass, great for that wide round less treble steel sound of the Fender Jazz. Together with the Jazz, would be a powerful one two in your bass arsenal.
it'd be amazing if you could do a video of this bass with effects
@andyKCIUK - Try to find the stuff that Ray Riendeau did with the Lightwave, he really kicks ass and shows the bass off nicely.
BTW I was just on the Light Waves site & noticed they have a hybrid bass with a magnet pickup along with this system. Any plans to review that model?
I immediatetly thought of star wars when I saw the title. :P And funny how this bass is so sci-fi.
@killmeandit - I guess I'll try that when I review the VL fretted 5 string next.
@Tooltrocity - I'm going to demo the Max 12 with the Uber 212 cab, and then add the Uber 410. That's going to be loud!
This system catches the string vibration at the bridge so its like a piezo or jazz bridge pup kind of voice? I mean you dont have any pup near the neck to get a P-ish sound, right?
Since this bass uses infrared rather than pickups, will those pickups be able to differentiate the different type of strings i.e. flats or half wound?
Sounds very similar to a Kubicki Ex Factor Bass, but bigger,& fuller. How are both models for recording compared to a Fender Jazz in your opinion? Also how are they for metal & prog? Be great to include though's two styles in your review, since they're pretty big these days. Really enjoying the reviews, keep up the good work!
Nice reggae-tone... I'm gonna check this bass out.
@raymagdaleno - At some point yes.
Is there any chance to get that tightness and low end without a powerfull and flexible preamp like that?
@kbot86 - Well, the VL is a physically nicer instrument, and that is worth something. I can't say I heard a big difference in the basic tone, though I'm sure there is. I haven't played a fretted VL 4, I do have a 5 here ready to go. Hard to say... the SL is a good, solid no-frills bass, but the big stuff - the electronics are the same as the VL.
Is it a lightweight bass??
Hey Ed, how would you say this bass feels with regards to the neck profile? I`m actually pretty interested in one of these :P
@funkmetalbass I'm not 100% sure, but I've noticed long ago that when you play bass with the "classical" [the typical] technique, you'll trigger a lot of harmonics while just playing, that's why I play differently and try to mute all the strings I'm not playing [unless I actually want to support my sound with those harmonics]
SO, this basses are SO sensible that the oldschool techniques aren't good enough for this basses
that's my theory xP
Hay Ed, i want to know what that bass sounds like with fuzz or distortion, or both, just curious. thanks!
the bass is absolutely amazing
it sure kix ass on slapping and chords =O
You can purchase Lightwave Basses through Amazon.
Amazing bass! And when you said 12 hundred, did you mean 1,200?
@xiz90 - $1200 is not cheap, but these days, I wouldn't call it expensive either.
nice bass
What is the nut width on the bass?
what's the song in the beginning? I FORGOT!!! :O
how does it sound with flat wounds?
@raymagdaleno i bought a hybrid recently. it sounds so good. crisp tone, strong punch, mellow when necessary, hiss-less, and overall a great buy. i picked it up on amazon for $872
Nice. Name of the song? Thanks
Do they have any good 6 strings?
the reggae section really reminded me of Israelites by Desmond Dekker
I love the part where you play chords, sounds great!
The advantage of this kind of system is you don"t need metal strings-gut users take note.
nice sound, future tech time to bin the magnet
Great Review,I liked the bass sound, until I saw all that circuitry arround, if i have problems with luthiers matching right pots, I dont wanna think about fixing this thing.
gab da - Some parts are definitely not user serviceable, but I'm sure they'd take care of any problems if they occurred.
As a concept, is interesting, but in practice, specially to foreigners, travelers. I think is a Problem. They would have to put all that circuitry in a small dsp, semiconductor, so in case of fix, they just send a chip to insert in a socket.
Seems to be a nice bass but i'd miss a thumbrest without pickup. So I'm gonna stick to my Peavey
@Adam Lopez
beautiful tone, even though I hated the slap sound
I checked their page and the bass is even cheaper : 995$ for the 4 string.
@MightySaxKid - I teach there.
I th only one who thinks it should have been called 'the lightsaber'
@scarred2112 - Take your meds dude.
@MalGanis222 - I Want You Back
I mean the first song :)
How does the wood affect the tone if it's an optical pickup? Maybe I'm not completely sure how tone woods work but it seems like tone woods wouldn't have an effect with an optical pickup.
Piezo, piezo...
Yeah, but is good for METAL???
: P
Why don't you become a partner?
that reggae bassline sounds like "the israelites" !
i'm learning to play bass...this video just lost me...
