Thanks Ryan for the desk ideas. I am upgrading my editing office. We unfortunately don't have anything like stand up desks here in Ecuador but i will try build one next week and send you a video of it so maybe you can use it as an idea for your show so people don't have to go out and buy one that costs 1000 bucks.
Try this: Loosen the up/down tilt handle of the tripod, mount the camera onto it and then carry the whole tripod (unspread) using the tilt handle. the camera would be a little side tilted, so you need to adjust the side tilt until it is straight then lock it. I tried this several times and it works, you just need to master lessening the side tilts since you need the handle to be loose. :D
FIlm Riot you guys are the best! thank you guys for making videos about how to make videos!avnd vfx and taking the techniques of film and making jibs, stabilizers, and rigs!!!!you guys are the best indie film guys out there! keep it up!!!
Film Riot, wish me happy birthday I have been subscribed since ep.6! No but in all seriousness you guys are a highly efficient team of filmmaking expertise. I enjoy your videos and you are all beautiful. x
Finally a filmriot episode like the ones I subscribed for, with some affordable creative solutions. The only thing it was missing was the movie thing at the end. I have not been watching FilmRiot for weeks or months now because I didnt like how its been changing and all the overpriced stuff, but this one is good.
Our intention is to help aspiring filmmakers learn. Which means showing the higher end gear that you will use on a legit production. We work hard to get our hands on this stuff to teach for free what would be expensive to learn otherwise. The cheap/free stuff will stay around as well, but it will walk hand-in-hand with the higher end. We'll try to balance it a bit more though, thank you for the feedback.
I love you guys and I watch you regularly. I also dig it that you're able to pay your bills with sponsorships. For that, I consider you just-this-side of genius. But half of this episode is a commercial. Careful with that. Your brilliance is expressed in your transparency. Should you become too much of a commercial outlet, in this fickle world, I (and many like me) will abandon you quickly. I find you guys an invaluable resource. I don't want you to be relegated to the UA-cam has-beens!
to save snapping one of the legs off... if you just put the camera on the tripod as normal, then tip it upside down with the legs extended all the way in the air, and hold it by the centre post, you get the same effects and its even easier! :) thumbs up so people can see :D thanks!
Great video Ryan, I'm definitely going to do this one day. Interesting about the desk, I might try it out. After all, most jobs on set require to be on your feet for the whole day.
FilmRiot! Please do an episode on a DIY standing desk! I think it could seriously benefit lots of people out there, including me, who spend a lot of time editing photos/video. Thanks!
"I'll see you next week, when it turns out the Bigfoot on my roof is not dead. And then stuff happens..." I've watched every episode of Film Riot since the very start and this is the hardest I've ever laughed. Thank You, sir.
I took the front reflector from my mountain bike, but I left the collar on, and put the screw from my quick release plate through the hole where the reflector was attached, and I now have a mount for any camera with a standard mount
Craft stores like Hobby Lobby carry 22" x 28" sheets of whiteboard coated poster board which can cut and attached to retrofit an existing desk, or any other surface you want to write on.
When doing tall steady shots, I've always just used my super heavy tri-pod and held it by the neck just under the part that screws into the camera. Also, ebay has super cheap dslr steady cam rigs. I got mine for $100 and works perfectly and it a lot smaller of a set-up and lighter than a tripod.
Pulled prior - prior pulling. Shulling and fulling. Set to a good focus distance where you think your subject will be as you move the rig around town. Around town side ways up and down.
***** It has to do with what he is using with the camera. If he is using a wide angle lens, you probably wouldn't even be able to notice much depth of field (focus) in the image. Or, he is using a deep aperture (usually around f/8) as a camera setting. Or, he could be using a wide angle lens with a deep aperture (but unlikely as that would probably be redundant). To simply answer the question, he technically isn't maintaining focus. He's just keeping the depth of field so deep that it keeps almost the entire picture in focus at all times.
For standing desks, I believe you're also supposed to raise the monitor so that your neck isn't craning down. Source: I use standing desks and I am a personal trainer.
Simplest tripod stabalizer I have seen is simply holding the top of the tripod, with the legs shortened and together, with the camera on top. Depending on the size of the cam, add a weight to the bottem of the tripod legs. For low angle shots, simply flip it over and then flip the image back in your NLE.
for diy types who want a whiteboard desk you can buy contact paper that when stuck to any surface becomes a whiteboard. I used to use a that material for any open spots that weren't covered by equipment in my recording studio.
You should do a tutorial on how to make a solid DIY whiteboard standing desk! I know it seems a bit straight forward but you guys have a lot of great creative ideas! Also! I love the cheap tripod stabiliser video! That one saved me some $$$$$$$$$$$!!
Okay, so don't try this with an amazon $20 tripod. Just did it to my friends and the entire fucking thing fell apart... Now I owe him $20. THANKS A LOT FILM RIOT. (jk, kinda.)
When we shoot flat video we actually have that dynamic range that you mention in "VFX Color grading" i think. Although with this new hack that Magic lantern giving out beside shooting Raw and 4K with 5D it's going to have a killer 14 stops of Dynamic range. but if you're going to even cover more things why not , do it as fast as you can you know that we can't wait :)
amazingly helpfulas wellas ironic that my tripod leg broke yesterday im using it on the farm next week and this is going to save me soo much money and sooo much time thanks
I think you guys haven't been fluctuating very smoothly lately, not that I don't like the episodes. I just mean that we'll get 3 VFX in a row then a review then 2 VFX shows, then 2 reviews. I think it would benefit the show to alternate regularly or stick to a schedule (VFX then review or camera technique video then VFX etc) I do think it would benefit the show. Just some constructive criticism. I absolutely love all of your videos.
*Gentle comforting hug*
This is why I love filmriot. You have helped me so much. Thank you so much!
Like I said in the episode. If you don't have the cash for an UpDesk, do a DIY build. There's tons of stuff about it. Just do a google search.
YES! I love it.
Yes!!! A DIY video like in the old days. I love Film Riot for this. More DIY and AE-nifty-how-to's. YES
Ryan i'm 15 and I want to be a filmmaker and I have to say you are one of the many men who inspired me. You are awesome!!!!!!!
Very kind of you to say! Thank you. You made my night. :)
Every second counts of film riot. you learn through the whole episode, even the silly bloopers on the end

Great episode as always!
I just realized how much fun you guys have when making Film Riot, or anything else you do :D
Try this: Loosen the up/down tilt handle of the tripod, mount the camera onto it and then carry the whole tripod (unspread) using the tilt handle. the camera would be a little side tilted, so you need to adjust the side tilt until it is straight then lock it. This is cool! Never would have thought of doing this.
Whoah ive seen ur vids and now i see u here this is crayy
:D
Beautiful. This is just what I wanted to see as a DIY option for the last video.

I'm so glad we've witnessed a well overdue, practical diy episode
Finally a film riot episode everyone can do!
Being someone who doesn't use CGi effects, this is probably the most useful filmriot episode in months
Thanks for the heads up. I fixed the link.
Really great technique idea! Thanks for trying it out and showing us the results!
Definitely.
I have indeed. Thanks man.
I plan to do an episode soon.
I'm going to do an episode on that soon.
I was thinking about making something like this earlier, then Film Riot comes out and is all "I got you buddy!" Thanks Film Riot.
I LOVE ME SOME DIY BUILDS! These things are just so darn helpful. Keep up the good work.
Its always a treat to hear you sing ryan 10:21

You Made my year its cool talking to you your a very talented filmmaker and abselutly love your show!!!!
The link is in the show notes above.
Great video Ryan, I'm definitely going to do this one day.
Interesting about the desk, I might try it out. After all, most jobs on set require to be on your feet for the whole day.
Hmmmm. A few people have been saying that. It's a youtube issue, not sure what's going on.
Yeah, FCPX has it's own built in stabilizer.
as a up and coming filmmaker i just wanted to say thank you
Thanks for the ideas film riot :) This looks like a great solution to my problem in my new film
Fo sho! It's good for you. And eat your veggies too.
OFTEN!
FilmRiot! Please do an episode on a DIY standing desk! I think it could seriously benefit lots of people out there, including me, who spend a lot of time editing photos/video. Thanks!
That was VFX color grading. This is totally different. It's all about how you shoot. Then very simple color grading in the end.
Feel like a normal desk really. Similar to the type of thing you'd find at the apple store.
DAWSON BOYLE!!!
Those are all movie hints. I'm describing a scene in different movies. It's an unsaid game. :)
THANKS A LOT FILM RIOT!! SWEETTTTTTTT!!!!
"I'll see you next week, when it turns out the Bigfoot on my roof is not dead. And then stuff happens..."
I've watched every episode of Film Riot since the very start and this is the hardest I've ever laughed.
Thank You, sir.
Works fine on mobile.
Cool idea Ryan.
I took the front reflector from my mountain bike, but I left the collar on, and put the screw from my quick release plate through the hole where the reflector was attached, and I now have a mount for any camera with a standard mount
Ryan my name is Yan i'm from Brazil i'm 17 and your videos help me a lot your the man.I work with videos too and hope one day achieve you
i just filp my tripod upside down and flip it in post
T Yoshisaur Munchakoopas Definitly not
yeah, thats what i do too
*raises hand*
Josh's Sweet Buns! Nice save there, Ryan.
I fixed the link. Try now. And thanks man.
You could also slap a warp stabilizer on the footage to smooth some of it out. Just shoot a little wider to compensate for the cropping.
I recommend going to garage sales. I went often and now I have three tripods laying around. I thought they would come in handy some day! :)
Why do you guys have to be so good at DIY??!!
BOO YA!
Ryan, for test videos, like that tripod one, make Josh act more campy and cheezy. He's always so serious.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK RYAN! :)
Craft stores like Hobby Lobby carry 22" x 28" sheets of whiteboard coated poster board which can cut and attached to retrofit an existing desk, or any other surface you want to write on.
Lol, you've sounded like Phillip De'franco twice in this episode. It's funny haha !
Ryan!!!!!!!We have the same tripod!!!!I'm so happy!!
A pen and pad would also work.

Set to a good focus distance where you think your subject will be as you move the rig around town.
Around town side ways up and down.
When using the diy steadicam, how are you maintaining focus?
Wide angle lens/deep depth of field or a combo of both. Either should give you plenty of wiggle room with focus.
theAndrewkin What? I'm a beginner, sorry. Could you explain it again. Thanks!
***** It has to do with what he is using with the camera. If he is using a wide angle lens, you probably wouldn't even be able to notice much depth of field (focus) in the image. theAndrewkin Thanks.
Anyone else found this most humorous part of the video - "Here is the trunk stretching exercise for strengthening the nut muscles."
For standing desks, I believe you're also supposed to raise the monitor so that your neck isn't craning down. Source: I use standing desks and I am a personal trainer.
Does your counter-weight have to be the same weight as the camera?
Thank u soooooo much for making vids^^ I'm in a video editing class and I'm director and camera, it helps me a lot
Well you just saved me 50$ for a steady cam! Can't believe I haven't sewn this before now but thank you so much!
that desk is sick!

BLIND CLIENT PRODUCTIONS this isn't a DIY channel it's a filmmaking channel
''Convince Arris I'm Batman''...this isn't done YET !? but Ryan. You are Batman.
They have. Give it a search on their channel page.
Film is riot is Life!
!Looogoow!
It is now January 19th 2021. These were good times.
Haha, thank you! I would buy one, but I got an office desk like 3 months before i heard about updesk haha
My father has a wire/cable system controlled desk, pretty cool stuff.
Hey Ryan great episode as always. I think the link to the UpDesk website is broken, it might just be me, but just letting you know.
Okay, so don't try this with an amazon $20 tripod. Just did it to my friends and the entire fucking thing fell apart...
Now I owe him $20.
THANKS A LOT FILM RIOT. (jk, kinda.)

You make me want to buy everything you try show on your episodes, haha. Good advertising! I want to buy a domain for the fun of it.
I have the same manfrotto tripod, perfect setup for that shot
This I Sao helpful!! You guys should really do videos for low budget film makers
*Raises hand, then looks over and passes out because Ryan is right next to him raising his hand.

When you remove the rivet, you can replace it with a small bolt and wing-nut. Then you can use it either way.
Talks about looking over show to sure it's fine, forgets outro. I think Rygy dosed off! :P
