Nismo Z vs Dark Horse Mustang and GR Supra - The Dying Breed | Everyday Driver

- Опубліковано 9 чер 2024
- The Nismo Z and Dark Horse Mustang shouldn't exist. Few people buy dedicated sports cars anymore, but Nissan and Ford built them anyway. And combined with the BMW/Toyota collaboration that is the GR Supra these three make us a rare breed that's hard for manufacturers to justify. Thankfully they do exist and we put them together, back to back, on a cold and snow speckled mountain road.

It's a dying breed because the MSRP prices are not worth it... then add $XX,000 of markup and it becomes extremely not worth it.
Dealers with ADM and OEMs going crazy with price increases will kill the last generation of gas sports cars even sooner.
Just say you can not afford it. It's okay, everything in life you won't be able to afford.
You don’t know what you’re talking about.

In these times where fun cars are $50k+, I’m thankful the BRZ/GR86 exists.
@@shogunvic9878 in the beginning maybe. When I bought mine it was just msrp, no extras no BS, that was back in may of 2023, should be significantly easier to buy at msrp or lower now.
@@shogunvic9878 BRZs do not get marked up lol.
I bought my GR86 a year ago under MSRP.
The GR86 is listed for $45k here in Sweden. 😔
@@shogunvic9878 I sold the first Neptune blue 86 at my dealer. One of 4 of the first batch during release and at Autonation we did not mark them up. Just MSRP plus 499.99 for tint.
When I graduated college in 2002 I bought a brand new mineral grey metallic Mustang GT Premium with leather interior and a manual transmission. It was $23,497.
Late last year my local Ford dealer had a Dark Horse on its showroom floor and the asking price (with markup) was $97k.
21 years. Nearly 400% increase. Bonkers.
I agree, part of the Mustang heritage is that it was the Muscle car for everyone's budget. That does not apply now; even with the EcoBoost model...
A sign society has terribly terribly collapsed and more than a few terrible terrible things went wrong
Look at the 1970 240z ($3,500 brand new) vs the 1990 300zx ($40,000+). Thats over a 1000% increase over 20 years. It's not the price increase thats crazy its the fact that 95% of us aren't getting paid proportionally to inflation
Well for 1 thing the better comparison to today's Darkhorse would have been the 2003 Mach 1 or at the very least the Bullitt. Not to mention for that money I would have gotten a Firebird Formula and sorta did as I bought a brand new 2001 Pewter Z28 in 2002 for $21k. Fun VERY fast car for the time. Would smoke a much more expensive 2001 Cobra.
I do hear you on the price. Inflation is killing ALL of us. My brand new 2019 Mustang GT BEFORE my TTT, down payment, trade in, ect was $39,550 in Oct 2018. Its a Premium package, Ruby Red upgrade, 20" wheel upgrade, Navigation. The MSRP was like $48k. I got a good deal on it getting that much off the MSRP. A year or 2 later the price on the same car jumped up quite a bit. Until just recently my car has been worth more than I paid for it. The fact everything is going up so much in price but no one is getting paid more is a real problem.
Have you not looked at Camaro prices? If you want budget muscle go for that. And the Mustang EcoBoost start at 32K. The dark horse is one of the highest trims. There's a gt prem which is still kind of expensive.
If you're buying new these days you're kind of a sucker anyway. These things drop a lot of value.
Im a Mustang guy. I have a 2015 GT but i really have to say that the Nismo Z nailed it. That white color is amazing, the styling is amazing. The interior is nice without being too gimicky. I love the Z.
The problem is that it should be about $5-6k upgrade over the Performance trim instead of the $10k-15k it is, and *needs* to come in a manual. 2013 GT Mustang here. This is probably the last generation of gasoline sports cars before everything is at least a hybrid if not EV. You buy these for old school engagement.
Having had a 370Z and Mustang Gt's with the performance package, ending in 2016. all manual cars, even the Z. I have had the itch to get a new one. Even look at Corvettes for 2024. I'm just old, I guess Gone are gages. It's turn into gizmo world for an instrument panel. Dealer games with pricing should be Dropped by the manufactures. When looking at the new Z, you open the door and it's my 370 on alot of items. But improvements are welcome. I'm finding dealer mark-ups on Nismo's that aren't mentioned till you start visiting the dealers. Same with FORD. Toyota has a $5.000 mark-up on what little they have for a GR. Sorry to wine. It's great seeing all three cars, and the opinions of all three. Yes, the Z is truly quite nice. Oh, this clip was about driving, but service cost on any of these is magical. But that goes with the performance aspect of any new or old car.
Agree besides being 70k 😂😂😂 I'll take my c8 Corvette in Cacti Green please!
Agreed, it’s down on power, but so easy to tune up a twin turbo to be a beast.
I love all three. I went with the Supra but appreciate the competition. I love that they are all platforms that you can easily build on to make the car yours. Cars like these feel like a last hurrah before electric takes over.
The paint color on that Mustang is *SO* nice...
To this day I still haven't seen a Z driving around except in videos. Seen plenty of Supras and even a Dark Horse or two though
And most are not going to see them any more than you will see a Acura Type S.....the price point and what you can comparably purchase for that price out weighs the need to buy them. They'll be purchased years down the road in the used car arena if even that
The Supra looks much lower than the others.
Hi, from Japan!! Yes, I think the Nismo is the masterpiece of new Z. Also, I love the tachometer sets red zone “7000rpm” on top. Japanese Super GT driver “Tsugio Matsuda” designed it. Like our heart reach to the top.
I love the idea that in cars like these with modern automatics the transmissions don’t detract from the experience but a good manual adds to the experience. Great way of putting it, and great video!
We’re glad to hear that resonated for you. Thank you for watching!

Thanks for watching, listening, and enjoying what we do!
Mustangs historically have never had much steering feel or connection to the road. The only ones that do are the GT350 and GT350R.
See if you can get a Boss 302, low miles should still be cheaper than the dark horse and they're exceptionally good.
This was an EXCELLENT comparison
I love your comparison videos. Excellent job!
I drove a Supra and a C8 back to back. The Supra felt like a sports car. The C8 felt too safe.

I’ve had my Nismo Z only for a few weeks. Initially got ppf done for the full front/track package then decided to ppf the rest of the car and I’m glad I did. Drove it around yesterday and I felt like a mini celebrity. It’s a genuine head turner. People chatting with me about it, nodding their heads and giving thumbs up approval, etc. It’s a fun car to drive.
Imo the Z car looks great. There's a little retro modern going on
Glad you like it but it’s a puzzling buy at $70k. Many better cars at the price range.
@@SelimxBradley long story to my z but I bought it used with 117 miles on it for under 65k before fees

Stopped at "Initially got ppf" going to last sentence seeing if there's substance... "It’s a fun car to drive." Oh good, nice!
Due to crazy markups and shrinkflation, I still haven't seen a normal nissan z on the road....so why would I get excited for the nismo which will have even less cars made and more markup?
I haven't gotten to drive a Dark Horse yet. However, as a 2022 Mach 1 owner, I will say that if you're a potential buyer who is shying away from the Dark Horse due to the insane price tag or the touch screens all over the place, definitely go test drive a used Mach 1 with the 6-speed Tremec. You will NOT be disappointed one bit with your purchase. It is an absolutely phenomenal car. I work full-time from home, and I always cherish the opportunity to go for a drive, even if it's just a short trip to the local grocery store. Every minute spent behind the wheel is a delight.
And the Shelby GT350
I agree. I have an ‘18 GT Conv PP1. I think the S550 is a sweet spot for Mustang interiors. It has a reasonable sized screen but retains lots of classic touches. I’ve been disappointed with the lack of steering feel but love everything else about it. I recall the GT350 had better steering feel. I’ve never driven a Mach 1 but suspect it would also have good feel.
@@dr.sherifsoliman8576 I always keep my steering mode on "Sport", which makes it harder to turn the wheel and thus simulates feedback. It's not terrible for electric steering, but nothing beats a traditionally-connected setup.
Old car looks better also.
Inquired about two Supras yesterday and both dealers were charging markups. one of them 10K. Screw them.
Must have been in Hackensack, NJ. Let me tell you a story: Apparently, Toyota of Hackensack sold a lot of supras close to invoice so that they could become a top selling supra dealer and sell more cars than everyone else. But as soon as Toyota saw that they were a top supra dealer, they started sending most of cars to them. Talking roughly 20 Supras a month. So what did they do now that they have all of these allocations? They raised the prices on all supras. And now they’re I have the market all to themselves because they got all the allocations. I think many dealerships are doing this, and it’s a shame, because they are essentially price fixing.
We sell at MSRP all day long...dealers that run mark up on standard cars struggle to sell.
...it might take a while, but let each dealer know, the 1st one to sell at MSRP, gets your dollars. Leave your card/name/number and put the ball in their court. bring your own financing and hopefully walk out happy.
You guys are the best!!!❤
Great comparison. Love the sound of that Dark Horse, wish the rest of the car was worthy of it.
great review guys,,,,,thanks
great vid guyus Like always !
Nice review keep up the good work
I have to say, used 2020 Supra prices are looking more and more attractive. Given how unpopular the Z has been, it may be the true bargain in another 3 or 4 years.
You may be dead, or paralyzed by then. If you want it now, go for it. Life's too short. Unless of course, finances are an issue. No shame in that.
The Z isn't unpopular at all, the supply chain just isn't delivering them.
I bought a 21 nitro yellow with 13k miles private owner from an Audi Master tech. The car has a couple of goodies making 470wph/550TQ
@trustebuddha307 supply chain isn't problem at all. It's the greedy dealerships that can't sell them because of Markups. Nissan's own failure for the Z will be the dealerships for failing to sell that at stupid high prices.
Also the aftermarket for the Supra is now astronomical. Do whatever you want with it. Drag car? Drift Car? Track Car? Just stay "normal"? Fast ass street car? Show car? Whatever you want, you have nearly unlimited options.
Been waiting all day for this to drop
How did u know this would drop, and who are you?

Ford needs to go back to the drawing board with the Mustang's steering because everyone seems to say the same thing about the lack of feel, yet the Mach 1 didn't have the same complaints. How do they mess that up from one generation to the next, especially when it's largely the same car?
Better question is. When has the Mustang ever had good steering feel? Besides the GT350 and GT350....
They’re in desperate need of a new, smaller chassis.
@@MaddNomad1015there was a comment from Paul that we cut out of this video where he said what if Ford built a car the size of the Supra but with the 5.0 in it still? He even jokingly called it the Mustang II idea, just with actual power. I personally think the Mustang needs to shrink down about 80% and lose 800lbs. Now that would be interesting!
@@phattyhales That would actually be a fascinating idea! Let's extend on that a little more and imagine if Ford of Europe did the design as a modern Ford Capri, with European handling and simplify the heck out of that interior. We need to pressure Paul into doing a design clip dreaming up such a car!
@@phattyhalesat this point they really should if they’re bringing the price up. I know faithfuls would be mad but a Supra sized Mustang would actually be a perfect evolution. People forget the 60s cars weren’t crazy heavy either. Time to bring the Mustang further into sports car territory
Had a 21 Supra. Awesome. Now have a 24 BRZ ts. This is the car to have!!!!!
Love your films👌👍
Thanks for watching! Glad you like what we do!
It's shocking how much better looking the old Mustang is over the new one. When you had the flash of the Mach1, then back to the new one, man...Ford really missed the mark with this new Mustang. Then when you get inside, that awful big screen tacked on to the dash waits for you. Sad.
The new Mustang 2024 is ok but not a huge visual better look than the S550. The front bumper is too busy with the flat black below the headlamp area. No front fog lights with the huge sorta fake vent area are not so visually appealing. The nostril look does not have the same subtleness of the S550 GT and higher trims. The rear requires a wing to make it look nice because the car lines are more ridged than smooth. It's not bad it's just an "ok" look overall.
@@joeynimmbletv7765 It just looks like a big step backwards. The worst part is the interior. Subjective, but to me it's awful.
I'll agree to a certain extent the dark is a beautiful car but I don't like the design of the non dark horse model the nicest design will most likely always remain the outgoing gt500 and gt350 even on into the release of the gtd
I called it! Halfway through the video I predicted each of your pics for number 1. Been watching for years so I feel like I’ve learned your preferences. Cough cough, gimme the Dark Horse all day!
Great video. Surprised you didn’t include the base stingray. Also, did the s550 have more steering feel than the new car?
I'd rather have the supra, but with the manual. That's what I'd pick
I ordered a 2022 Mach 1 with TREMEC, Handling, & Elite package but my second choice was a GR Supra if it came to it
What a great video, super good honest opinionated review video.
I would love to have any of these cars.... sadly msrp markups have made these cars so hard to obtain unless you want to sell your kidneys
😂
Great video! What road is this? Thanks!
Yes, if you're driving to work on a road like that, a manual transmission is nice to have, but if you live in or around a big city as most of us do, the auto and a coffee or water bottle is perfectly suited for a great auto transmission. Encountering stop & go traffic is no fun with a manual.
That color on the ford is amazing in person
Wow that mustang color pops in the sun. Idk if I’ve seen anyone else show that color, looks almost like a less crazy mystichrome
Thanks guys!
Keep being great sir💪🙏
Fantastic comparison review. Awesome curved roads and scenery and videography, sound and editing! Cool that all three of the cars were made. Supra and Nismo are more my jam but the mustang looks and sounds much more like a muscle car. Too bad ford forgot about steering feel. Im not sure why car makes dont offer hydraulic steering in sport cars. They could charge extra for that!
With all that said for the money, feel, beauty and function I'd rather drive my 1995 Porsche 993 cabriolet. Cheers! 😀
As a manual Porsche guy I have no interest in these cars. However, I watch for the production value. Nice job guys.
Saw a Dark Horse on a lot. Sticker price was $76,000.
I’d be choosing a left over Camaro ZL1 any day of the week at that price…and I don’t even like the interior or exterior of the Camaro all that much either…and I’d still pick it
Too expensive
Definitely would find a gt350
That Mustang interior breakdown was spot on. I hope Ford is listening.
I have owned five Mustangs and I would agree. The interior has a cheap plastic look and screens need to be integrated into the dash rather than looking like it is sitting on the dash.
The screens completely ruin it for me
@@Lionsheartification the base models look even worse, with the screens being split into two.
I'm on my third Mustang and I think Ford absolutely got it right. It was time to move this car forward and the interior is an improvement in every way, IMO.
@@tri3pleagent The screens are objectively unattractive and make the interior look worse than last gen

Man, I really like the paint on that Dark Horse! That steering input sounds totally numb! Overall, I'd still take the Supra GR with a manul for sure. I also like the Supra's rims a lot. But that visibility does seem pretty bad so I would have to test drive one to see how bad the visibility is. I can't believe they want nearly 70K for that Z! Did you guys spill a drink on the Z's Recaros? Generally I do not like all black rims at all. Thanks for the video
We put the Indie 500 Firehawk on ours and made a huge difference
Good video review. Thanks for taking the time to review these. Having owned both a Supra 3.0 and a Dark Horse, I agree with your assessments. The Dark Horse is a powerful and heavy car, butI disagree with the steering feel comments. Mine had the handling package & MT, but the steering gear is the same in the reviewed car. Better handling than the S550 models in most cases. The Supra is lighter and cheaper. Sounds good also. If you can find one with a manual transmission, it’s probably the best bang for the buck. They are not producing enough of those for our market though at the moment, unfortunately. The whole BMW thing never bothered me though, as that’s largely a fact of existence today for small volume coupes and sharing platforms across companies.
We greatly appreciate you sharing your ownership experience. We’re glad this comparison resonated with you. Thanks for watching!

As I thought about the Stang gaining weight. Its basically got everything the RCF got in 2015 despite having 30 more hp and 2 more gears. Welcome to the heavy V8 class for the Mustang.

I'm so happy all of these cars still exist. I have had several Mustangs and a Supra long ago. I think I would choose the Z but boy would I like that car to have a manual and different headlight design.
I rented a 2021 mustang recently from enterprise and what you guys have said about the transmission on the new one is very accurate of how the transmission was on the 2021 model I had. It was absolutely the worst transmission I had ever experienced, it was especially god awful when you put it in manual mode, like holy cow was it bad.. Sad to know they havnt improved upon that 4 years later, and especially in the Dark horse spec. I don't see the appeal of a manual for your daily driver when dealing with traffic. If it was my weekend car, yea manual would be fun, but not even a consideration if the car is going to be my daily
The fact that the Dark Horse can even run with these cars is a testament to how far Ford has taken the "Pony/Muscle car". With a 6 speed this would probably be my choice.
I have a 2020 GR Supra Launch Edition (number 142) and absolutely love this car. To hell with all the BMW nay Sayers. This car is an amazing edition of Supra BMW does not build bad sports cars and this has the Heritage of the Supra and the M sport division of BMW. It's the Best of both worlds but with Toyota Quality. We also have a 2023 FL5 and when we take both cars out the Attention the Supra receives over the FL5 is astounding! it's different than anything else on the road and people love or hate it. Personally I love it!
The nismo and dark horse look amazing imo.
Definitely want to row my own. Especially in a sports car
Speaking of classics it looks like you a rocking a mullet.
My daily is a gen 7 Celica. I agree that a naturally aspirated Mustang need a manual transmission. It also needs to transmit what the tires feel through steering wheel.

Also, I would be extremely interested in seeing a Roush and Saleen version brought into the mix. Is that something you can so?
Horsepower cost way too much money now, unfortunate. Miss the early GM F Body days and my Trans am, it was cheap and fast
Having driven a GT350R and a GT500, Ford is really on their game for their higher end models.
Thanks great insight. Toyota for me but really a Elise if I doing a sports car. But I am bias. Great review thanks.
Love these cars
Ford might have forgotten they use to build cars at some point, probably has the Ecosport division putting their special ST touch on it.
The horse will be price gouged beyond your wildest dreams. The fans will die on any hill before saying the 10spd isn’t good in any form in an argument, they’ll gatekeep that Tremec to the grave lol
The more videos I see on the dark horse, the more I'm tempted to buy one. But I am already rocking a paid off 392 widebody with a six speed. If the darkhorse had AWD and a tow package I'll defiantly would trade something in for one.
I have the DH with handling package. The car is insanely fun to drive.
My S197 RS2 weighs 3,500 pounds - 500 lighter than the new Dark Horse - but is the Mustang a sports car? Maybe in certain company, but not when compared to smaller/lighter sports cars like the Zupra and the Z. Of course after jumping in my NA Miata, everything else feels heavy.
I bought a 2019 Nissan 370Z 6MT sport pkg coupe for about $33k. I put a good aftermarket intake and exhaust with a dyno tune to boost the crank hp from 332 to about 387 with 94 octane gas. I also put stiffer anti-roll bars with forged magnesium monoblock wheels for a total vehicle weight reduction of about 120 lb to get a weight of about 3266 lbs.
The car performs on par with a 911 Carrera S, for much less money. It's a fun car to daily drive and to take out on canyon roads here in Northern California. The cars in this comparison are badly overpriced, too heavy and are lacking the responsiveness and feel that are the hallmarks of a good sports car. Instead of spending money and adding weight and complexity on things like Magneride, I'd rather just have an ultra lightweight and responsive suspension that handles with precision and that maintains the suspension geometry when pushed hard. In this case, less can be more when form is made to follow function and to do it as well as possible with minimal compromise.
Take your money and go buy a Z06, Viper, Elise, 911. Much more special experiences in every way I can assure you.
Agree but you can’t compare new to used.
Amazing exhaust sound of V8 Mustangs
I own a 2017 Mustang GT with Premium and Performance pkg with the big brembos. I would love to own the Z Nismo one day
Stuck with a 10-speed? That 10 speed is a very good transmission. Not for the track, but everywhere else, it's very good.
I wonder if mid-range sports cars are like mid-range movies: Affordable options like the Miata are more consumable and the few that can afford the middle options end up going for blockbusters like the C8 and 911.
Which one is fastest which one responds best to performance mods as a drag racer I feel like they completely forgot about it
Wow really surprised with how disappointed you both were with the Mustang. Is the steering feel really that much of a departure from the Mach 1?
No these guys don't know what they are talking about. They are just dads reviewing cars, there are pro racers who have driven it and say different. I personally have tracked one and it feels better than the 6gen Camaro SS 1LE.
I own a GT350 and have driven my friends Mach 1. Test drove one of these and....it's a boat. A numb boat. But I'm a dad who's been driving sports cars since the 80's, so what do I know, lol

Great comparison though I wouldn’t have handicapped the Supra and the Darkhorse with the automatics. I agree that no manual is not a dealbreaker, but I would definitely deduct points from the Nismo for it. On that note, question for Todd. Would you buy the Nismo in auto or the performance with a manual?
We reviewed the standard Z in a different comparison. In short, the driving experience of the Nismo is worthwhile. Having a manual in the base Z isn’t enough to make it worthwhile. Thanks for watching!
I totally agree about the dark horse's shifting. I guess it the torque converter and the electronics not mating. In manual it does okay when youre hammering o it but, it takes it takes it's sweet time otherwise.

The Z needs adaptive suspension first and then power seats and finally a manual.
Power seats are heavy, people are very wimpy. Get a GT car if u want that kinda comfort.

the manual yellow will be exceedingly rare (but i have seen them on autotrader). im love to find a blue one with the tan interior because you can get that on the premium trim now (if any dealers stock them cuz you cant order directly)
@@illuminate4 I didn't know they made thst! Do you think would do tan on red? That would be a great spec too
Sports car shall never go away!!
Imagine putting manual recaro's in a sports car, but not a manual transmission.
The cost and the auto are serious letdowns for the NISMO. Were it's price more appropriate, and they still offer a manual (which I can't think of a reason why they don't) it would be a winner all through.
The Z might have the best steering (of these 3), but on track it still looses to a manual Camaro SS 1LE, manual Mustang DarkHorse, and a manual Supra.
only around >2500 New Supras were sold in the US last year (2023) I love my 2021 2.0 Supra... Best daily.
If anything were to happen to my old C6Z, I'd have to seriously consider a GR Supra /w manual. I'd REALLY miss the huge power of the LS7, and 22 cu ft of cargo space, but, the GR would seem to be a good compromise. The C6Z is only 3,153 lbs, so I'm used to a very light car and the GR might feel similar.
