Fixing a worn out 8x8 Argo and testing it in the ocean.

- My friend got hold of this 8wd Argo Amphibious ATV, it has been used in the salt water since new. It has worn out chains, bearings, seals, corrosion damage and some other issues so we spent a few days fixing it up then headed down the beach to test it out.

The 'always wear eye protection' then quick pan up to see him not wearing any, had me rolling.
LOL 'Safety squints ENGAGED' 😂

if anyone has a rust blasting laser kicking around. preferably broken and abandoned in a paddock somewhere, please let him know.
😂😂😂
Cough cough! Edd China.. Cough cough!
Well, technically speaking, as long as he wears the highest and best quality eye protection, he could buy the absolutely illegal fleabay special ones. They ain't cheap, but they ain't expensive either. As long as he cools it down properly, they do work as rust removing lasers, it's just that they're incredibly hacky and dangerous to your eyesight, because more often than not, they're super powerful to compensate for lack of proper software.
Think a rust blaster would be the beginning of a divorce, marty would never stop fixing things.
May have to go to tried and true, Molasses and water and soak it in a plastic bucket. Then he can tell the mrs its stock food.
You got to love the guy who came to work one morning and put grease fittings on the outside of a boat.
I'm not sure but I think those lines running down the outside will be connected to a central grease pump so you can do all axles at once.
It would make sense with 8 axles.
My mate had one years ago, I brought it to the set of Saving Private Ryan during filming. Brought a camera man out to sea and back in up those big dunes , nowhere that machine couldn’t go because I tried ever obstacle and gradient. Reliant Robin engine in that one and a pig for shearing sprocket pins. Regards from Ireland.
The dogs like. “It’s about time guys“ lol 🐕
Love those Argos. The company is about an hour and a bit down the highway from me here in Ontario Canada.
Take care everyone.
Super glue to the eye; always wear your eye protection. You panned to the perfect shot as your friend uttered those words. I'd just taken a sip of beer, and you can probably guess what happened as a result. Interesting little rig, and you picked the absolute best solution for lubricating the chain.
I'm glad your son's ok Marty. That chopper flys in over our house every day (we live by the hospital) and I think to myself each time that I'm glad it's not me and I hope they make it.
Yeah, I can't even imagine being stung 10 times. Once is bad enough. :(
Thanks mate, it gave us a scare.
You definitely make a lifestyle choice living way out in the Sounds from a medical emergency point of view, and it's ironic that so many of the people who make that choice are elderly and retired and most likely to have such an emergency. The Westpac Helicopter makes up for the distance I guess. It would surely be quicker to get taken to hospital by helicopter from D'urville, than by ambulance to Nelson or Wairau from Rai Valley. Glad your wee lad is OK. He's great value when he appears in your videos and a proper hard case.
@@_zzpza unfortunately I can. Got into a wasp ground nest by accident when I was a teenager. Got stung about 25 times. Wasn’t allergic before this but am now although not severely so. Antihistamines usually take care of the sting now & I’m much more cautious around bees than before
@@TrevorDennis100 lmao try getting an ambulance in Vancouver Montreal or Toronto . I used to mountain bike for a living.. compound fractures and I'm waiting 45 mins just for them to arrive ... I'll take MEDEVAC anyway of the week . The freedom to alter ones empire of dirt is what makes us want to fuck right off from city limits with their BS ... Like why can't I FENCE MY YARD . I'd I damn well please ? I own the land pay my taxes ... Yet permits take up to 3 years for a damned fence . And all the will approve is chain link... It's like I want privacy not a prison yard .. currently my nearest hospital is 26 mins away (more like 20 if speeding) and I got my 15 acres with 5 bedroom farm house 4 car garage private well (no one else is tapped into my well) I wouldn't change it for the world... I can pound my music louder than I could anywhere near the city . I get to build cool shit and Foremost I get to alter my EMPIRE OF DIRT. I understand why you'd want to move to the mountains . Tbh ... @Marty T 's place reminds me alot of home ... in the ROCKY MOUNTAINS lol ... I miss it so much!
using an old shell casing as a hole punch for the gasket is brilliant
Two men and an Argo 👍 What a way to spend a SAT night, think I need a frothy 👍
You two were having so much fun, great video. NZ now has a Navy.
There is something really satisfying about fixing old or plainly worn things.
I would guess that quite a few people watching this type of content don't know much about mechanics and are just watching to be entertained. But I'm pretty sure that it:
- is an inspiration to work on stuff
- helps to remember that many broken things can be fixed with simple things, instead of buying something new
- shows that new things can be made from recycled materials
- and that it teaches people that a lot of repairs are not witchcraft, but rather just simple trial and error or looking for clues. (most of the time....)
Remember that Right to Repair should be a RIGHT. Not a little bonus when buying something!
Thanks for the amazing content and the things you do for people!
Thanks to you, I want to get some old/not working tractor (or similar) to try and fix! :)
- cheers
I love watching these videos to learn, its amazing what you can pick up if you pay attention
@@Matty.Hill_87 Totally agree. Marty’s meticulous yet simple, straightforward approach to mechanical work has inspired me to be more like that myself, with good results. As a non-mechanic, I find I’m more careful and thoughtful when I’m fixing something up ( like an old lawnmower), and probably not in such a rush just to ‘Fix the bloody thing’. I’ve now learnt to slow it all down and enjoy the process. Thanks Marty👍🍻
I know nothing about mechanical stuff, and love watching Marty T fix something that someone else thought was irretrievably broken. Like bringing a tractor back to life after decades abandoned in the bush. If you like seeing people bring dead engines to life, you might also like Vice Grip Garage.
That was priceless when you panned to his face after he lectured us on the merits of wearing eye protection!
Fantastic machine and great fun, love the camera move when your mate said always wear eye protection Marty lol. Thanks for the entertainment on this windy wet Tuesday here in the UK Tom
Just two blokes sailing off into se sunset. Lovely! ;)
Awesome job guys👍. Thanks for the hearty laugh when you showed his face as he told about the crazy glue in the eye, and still no safety glasses😁😁. Great landscape shots by the water👌.🇺🇸🗽
Glad your son is okay. I’m sure that was scary. The Argo looks like a lot of fun! I wish you and your family well.
The final scene.....
Rubber dub dub two men in a tub
Driving off into the sunset.
It was always a childhood dream to have one of those, they were the futuristic James Bond vehicle of my youth.
Steering and throttle cables the 50 horse off the other boat and I'm sure you could get it up onto a plane...
😀👍💙💛
OMG this brings back nightmares of maintaining a couple of Argo Conquests used commercially in an 'Overloaded State' mowing and spraying herbicide in salt mashes to control invasive phragmites vegetation. My best advice on using an Argo in salt water is DON'T DO IT! We had the added pleasure of dealing with them using tracks. Ultimately that thin frame will fail due to corrosion especially where the chain tensioners mount. Oh yea they aren't a boat and your outboard motor is mounted too high. Make sure the bilge pumps are operational, oversize them when replacing, and make sure the hull is kept clean from debris which will block the bilge pump. We didn't float ours often but when we did we used 55 gallon drums strapped on the front & back for additional floatation and side towed them with a 20' boat white knuckle all the way hoping not to have a boat come by us and swamp the Argo with its wake. The day we ran out of unobtainable transmission cases was the best day of my life. Do you want to make an offer on 2 of them and I'll fill the hulls with all the spare parts including some bulletproof axles we custom made?
11:00 "we had some anti-histamines, so we just loaded him up with that". Marty is fixing broken machinery and children too!
Pleased to hear that your boy is ok after the wasp stings! Your mate cracked me up when he was telling the superglue story! 🤣
As a Kiwi living in British Columbia, Marty, thoroughly enjoy your videos.
Glad to see splined gears instead of the old roll pin design I had long ago. We eventually upgraded to splined gears. Blew many a roll pin with heavy loads, but we worked the old girl with a 60 gallon water tank in back.
These vids are deffo up there with Camarata, Diesel Creek, and Salvage Workshop. Thanks for making them!
I'm sure you know this Marty, so purely to feed your algorithm or maybe teach others - Submersion in ordinary White Vinegar is an incredible rust remover especially when you have more time than money. White Vinegar is a dilution of acetic acid and when it comes into contact with ferrous (iron) oxide it converts it to ferrous acetate (a salt) and hydrogen. What this will look like is the rust just falling off into flecks while small bubbles come off your item. At the end you are left with an item that is only the good steel or iron. Parts that were oxidized together will now be separate. Fasteners that seemed like trash will now have clean threads that can be spun be hand. Of course there are some caveats. 1. This process takes a long time, probably at least one to two weeks (maybe more) depending on the level of oxidation. 2. The item must be kept completely submerged in the vinegar away from oxygen. 3. The item must be clean of oils, etc. that would inhibit the vinegar from getting into the oxidation. 4.The process is not complete until your item has been submerged in a neutralizing bath of a base solution (like baking soda water) for at least half the amount of time of the original vinegar bath . During this bath the surface layer of your item will darken because of a thin black oxide layer. Porous metals like cast iron will need to neutralize longer then less porous metals. If you do not neutralize bath your item it will flash rust in front of your eyes as the oxygen in the air reacts with all the nice fresh iron you have exposed. 5. You will only be left with whatever good iron/steel you had to start with. Small delicate parts that are oxidized may not have enough good metal to survive intact. Watching your videos, Marty, has given me the thought that a vinegar submersion in an ultrasonic cleaner could add to the reaction since it should gently agitate the item to encourage the weakened rust to fall so that the solution can get into where it still needs to work. Thanks for the content Marty. Really enjoy the feeling of just hanging out while you work on something.
I think you boys should be given honorary Canadian status. Riding a Canuck invention while referencing a Canadian comedian. The irony is not lost! 🍁🥓🍻 Bob and Doug would be pleased. Cheers!
Take off, to the Great White North. Take off, it's a beauty way to go. Take off, you hoser!
Good day!
Well, we are part of the commonwealth; or should I say commondeception, lol. Fuck The Crown and central bank usurpers #LandBack
Take off you hoser! 😂
Hell yeah! Cheers from this icy land. It's freakin May 10th and I can see outside my window that it is snowing....
Marty if you have to replace any of the chain get it from a chain supply place that sells bulk chain if there is one available," much cheaper "The chain looks to be 502 pitch not sure about that but it looks like the same chains that the older Harleys use ...GOOD luck with the repairs on the ARGO darn shame it was not taken care of ,We really enjoy all your post, the Very Best to You & Your Family Always !👌😎👍🇺🇸👍 Missouri Paul 🌞🤗
Nice Job Marty, glad your sons ok.
She Floats - she Floats !!!! Well done and Great Video - love the Fly Over ! Many Cheers from us in Australia !!!!
Found yourself a nice piece of equipment and we'll made also. Proper maintenance should keep it going.
Enjoy...

Always relaxing to watch Marty T repair things. Competent mechanic.
LOL'd at UR mates "Do as I say not as I do" moment of wisdom.
I like how the camera panned up when he said, “always wear eye protection”. 😂
I always love when wal and cooch come together for a project
The overseas contingent will have no idea what that means, lol.
awesome video. what a beautiful cove yall found. can't believe its empty. you live in paradise
You are having way too much fun with that!
That is gold. Serious as all can be. Always wear eye protection. Proceeds to not have any
Always wear eye protection…. Was waiting for the pan up 😂
Sounds like the outboard needs to be dropped lower or get a long shaft model. Looks great fun..
Exactly what I thought, but marty ain't soft!! He knows his eggs🤣🤣🤣
I was so excited to see this video that I just dropped everything in the middle of my day to watch it
nice little drone you got yourself there marty
Fav choice of Jason and the argonauts
That leather punch you used is brilliant! Never thought of that. Love your content
Watching that 3 point turn on the hill had me in tears lmao!!!! Good job Marty 👍 glad to hear your son is okay, tough little cookie 💪🏼
I'm gonna share this in the Argo ATV owners international group.
I got my 8x8 new, have yet to do bearings on it
Bullet casing leather punch is genius
Two little boys playing with there new toy. 🤣
Love it.
Banana splits comes to mind. Great video too guys. Safe travels
The drone shots in that bay makes me think New Zealand is paradise. Good job as always and glad to hear your Son is doing better
Heh, me wife just said "I knew that was cable bay as soon as I saw the dunny!" LoL 🤣
Was working with M.E.K when I was a QC inspector for a coatings company. I bumped into a table beside the buck of this stuff and a 3/4 inch nut fell in and it splashed into my left eye! You talk about painful.
Congrats Marty and Friend for getting the 8x8 Atv running again. looks good.
Technically over in the states we refer to an Argo as an ASV for all surface vehicle. Plus different types of tracks are an option too.
Love the shell casing used as a puncture tool for the seal.
I've owned three of these in the past , used to use them to collect shot deer off of the hills and forests .
There weren't many places they wouldn't go . Always wanted one as new as your one , mine were all older models , Argo Conquest.
Maintenance was never ending on them , lots of bearing changes and oil changes.
The avengers were far better. I remember those Kawasaki engines would whine away. We used them in the north of England where the weather is best described as wet and on the conquest the chains would be immediately submerged in water.raining in so you were constantly oiling and chasing the water out.
Yes lots of little maintenance on those things especially if you take them in the water. And I got mine the bearings were basically cooked in it it's all rusty so I replaced the bearings with high speed sealed machine bearings actually intended for the CNC machine and yeah I paid quite a bit for them but in the long run they last 10 times longer than standard bearings pay the money up front you won't have to constantly replace them and when it came to the change I got actually have like roller bearings needle bearings in each one they were very very expensive but they're really smooth and they last way longer than a standard chain.
Cool little thing, I want one, even got two cup holder for ya beers 🤣 always put a smile on my face when I see a new MartyT video up
I like the bullet case as a hole cutter when making the gasket
Not to bring up anything but good memories of him.....but the "H.M.S Angry Argo" seems like a mighty fine name for this amphibious vehicle.....and every single swimmer on the beaches and bodies of water everywhere had best give respect where respect is due. Great video Marty.
This thing is a floating motorised petro-chemical spill.
LOL
I was working with a guy who got superglue in his eye. At the time he was alone in the workshop. He instinctively rubbed his eye and bonded his finger to the eyelid ! In that state he managed to get himself to the outpatients an have himself unstuck. We never let him forget that one. ! Interesting fix there. I remember as a young man making gaskets very often.
My God! What a hellacious view with the drone cam. Absolutely stunning!
lmao! Using a fired (.303?) case, as a punch! Classic!
Wherever I see those buggies I immediately start playing the 70's "BANANA SPLITS" theme tune in my head. 😊
Always in awe of how beautiful it is there!!
The view from that beach is very beautiful!
We used to have an Argo (mid 80s) that was used for Deer stalking in the Scottish Highlands. Great wee fun vehicle but it was noisy and uncomfortable as hell - and those drive chains kept snapping - jeesh! Best of luck with it.
These is the best bush brapper! Use sixteen wheels if that on can!
Your boy has your spirit! Glad he’s ok 👍🏽 also, you got some great mates, this video is great fun to watch and to hear you both chat as you “work”
Thanks for the video. The vista at 23:20 was beautiful.
Very cool ... wanted one since childhood watching the Cartoon "Johnny Quest" !!! LOL You're outboard is too high ... shouldn't hear the exhaust and you're loosing thrust as well. Might want to invest 20 AUD in a bilge pump ... not leaking now but if you ever spring a leak out in the Ocean, you'll have the safety feature of being able to pump as you make your way back to shore.
Chop a couple of inches off the outboard bracket and she'll be right (Trev). Nice community you have there Marty. I'm shocked your boy got 10 stings, that's a lot. Reminds me of a time we took some teen boys on a bush walk. One of them disturbed a nest and they got inside his cloths. Had to strip him to his underwear to clear them out. He was the only member of the group to be wearing a track top and pants, the rest of us had shorts and Ts and were left alone.
I hope you and your mate have lots of fun in that 'toy'. It would be a treat for your lad to take him out. And at least there are no wasps in it!
I use motorbike chain lube on mine out of a spray can , just spray them when you are driving in the water so it covers the whole lot, works a treat 👌 another great video mate 👍
I could use one of these where I live, would make getting on and off the little island I live on loads easier 🤣🤣
I had a Max 6 wheel vehicle for a time and they make a product called chain lube for the chains. Spray on and it sticks!
You live in a beautiful place my friend! I’m really happy to hear your son is ok I stepped on a yellow jacket nest as a kid and got stung many many times and I can attest it’s not fun and very scary great work on fixing the Argo!!
Thanks Marty good foresight re antihistamines great video love the drone cove shot.
Nice job fixing this Marty! I always enjoy your videos, long time subscriber, i just lurk around 🙂 Always was intrigued by Argo's ever since I saw the one my grandfather owned long before he passed away. They're super cool, although they're certainly not breaking any speed records in the water, they'll go just about anywhere.
Marty you rascal. I never know what sort of shenanigans you are up to.
Keep on fixing and keep after it.
Great content 👌👏👍
"There's always a pucker moment" and "always wear eye protection". Thanks for the wise words!
The Sounds are absolutely beautiful, The lil blue Argo looked great crawling its way across the beach
vapor blasting works great had my older truck body completely blasted got every thing paint and rust all bare metal .The argo are neat machine buddy put tracks on his it was a beast in the snow worked great
Great job on the repairs! Looks like that little outboard needs to be a little bit lower in the water to get a good bite in the water.
Neat little rig to putter around in 👌
Thank you Marty for taking us along in this adventure it reminded me of my youth and buddies working together to have a awesome day 🤙🏼ALOHA!!
Tusen takk for god underholdning. 👍🤗👍
New Zealand is truely a beautiful country, I'll have to come visit one day.
You know you are a true waterman if you have an outboard for your ATV
Well done boys. Wearing my Angry Ram t shirt with great pride here. Regards from Chicago.
Next time you folks have to replace a chain try an old bicycle racing trick. Melt a good size candle made of parafin wax in a double boiler on the stove. Take your clean chain and soak it in the wax. Take it out and let it dry. Doing that is much better and lasts much longer than oil. Plus, it's rust proof and quieter.
Anyone else appreciate that for a cork punch they used an old bullet casing? Genius!
Thanks for the video. I've always wanted one of those. Be sure to wash her down with fresh water like the previous owner should have done to reduce the rusting. You probably already knew that though.
I've always wanted to drive one of those Argo contraptions through a jungle-like environment where you traverse through bodies of water as well as upon land. It was fun watching you and your mate work on this machine, Marty. I'm looking forward to your next post!
Hi Marty. Love your shows! I remember riding in the Argo 22 years ago at Cable Bay Adventures when my "kids" took me to celebrate my 60th birthday! We also had races on quad bikes, but the main memory was driving on the Argo through unspoiled native forest and looking out to Delaware Bay. It brought back happy memories to see you on the causeway to Pepin. Having seen you deal to a wasp nest in the Sounds, and having had a section in Penzance Bay, I think you have to seriously think of using poison bait to reduce the risk of further wasp nests and Allergic Reactions. The Sounds are no place to be with Anaphylaxis Reactions. One of your correspondents is quite right, make sure you have Epipen injections in the house, car and boat!
Yes I have declared war on the wasps, baited fipronil
Super glue kid............I know that feeling. When I was 3, i got super glue in my eyes.........my parents gave me a petrol bath, it worked. You get end Argo videos with the Banana Splits music!!!!
Great little video Marty! I was wondering while you guys didn’t clean the chain trough on the other side it was a mess! Oil, water or both. Those are “kind of fun” slow as molasses in February on land and water. Oh well knowing you and your mates, the price was right! A wee hydrostatic transmission wouldn’t hurt either. That would be a cool video project for you! Don’t let Mrs.T see it or it will be on her wish list.
Those bugs are NO JOKE! God was with you. And I’m thankful for his healing and the help he got. Scare the crap out of me for sure.
Nice to see cable bay
Those Argo’s sell at a high price new. Like to watch you work on them.
Bit of a pain to rotate the tires on that one! Cool machine and good fun hanging out with a mate...good stuff
With that tire tread I think the tires were on the wrong sides.
Cable Bay. What a beautiful place.
An Argo owner quickly learns that there is never a good time to take a sip of a drink. I'm surprised that it was in as good a condition as it was. The two best days of a boat owners life are buying your boat, and selling your Argo. Best wishes!
@@JohnSmith-yv6eq 😀I'm not one to argo. I'd rather turn the other leak.
