WARB - War Assets Realisation Board - the NZ Govt agency responsible for the disposal of war surplus assets. The hut looks like the sort of structure that was erected on small, temporary military bases throughout World War 2 as accommodation for 2-4 men. They were prefabricated and could be knocked down into sections to be easily transportable. There were many small military camps around Marlborough (Several RNZAF satellite camps around Blenheim for instance) which were put up for disposal postwar. Would be easy for someone to pick up a Cheap hut ex WARB and put it up in the sounds as a fishing hut. You arent the first Kiwi to hunt down a bargain! :)

Hi Marty: I had a similar boat left on my shore by the owner years ago. After 10 yr. or so I salvaged it. On fresh water, there was no corrosion holes but it had been put together with rivets and having met with many rocks over the years, when put in the water it would quickly fill .The previous owner had attempted some repair with silicone, but that just covered up the issue, and didn't stop the leaks. First step was to clean that all off, like you did.
I identified leaks by putting the boat up on a stand and filling it with enough water to show the leaks dripping on the outside , and marked them with a grease pencil. Removing the water I could then reset the rivets with a pair of hammers and test with a water refill. Eventually I got all the leaks stopped up .
    Frank

I acquired a small aluminum boat with a few leaks and managed to repair them using low temperature aluminum welding rod and a MAPP torch. After closing the holes, I painted the riveted seams with "Through the Roof" sealant designed to stand up to all weather (in the US, anyway) then gave it a good coat of oil based marine paint and it holds up perfectly. Now I'm saving up for the money to get it officially registered, since I plan to use a 2hp outboard on it. Got the outboard free and only had to replace the plug wire.

In Texas, you can not operate without registration. And registration requires a title, not only for your boat but also for your motor. Hurricane Ike provoked legislation because there are so many dishonest people out there. But him squaring with the insurance company is definitely the right, ethical thing to do.

  • @michaelovitch

I'm sure this boat was declared "missed" on purpose to claim insurance.
Just looking at its shape and attempts made to repair it shows you its shape was known by the owner.
The old motor bolted on was certainly there to increase its insured value.

Great setup with that 4 stoke Honda. We take old aluminum boats, drill holes at each end of the cracks, and take it to our truck bed liner company. They charge an average $400, it sprays on Hot and ends up atleast ⅛" thick, you can order whatever thickness and color you want. Then beaching on rocks, hitting deadheads etc, doesn't even phase it, super tough.

Nice repair job, looks like it's working out for you. I've got a late 1950's era nearly 14 feet Aluminum shallow V fishing boat that leaks a little but, not a problem for me. I keep a larger sponge handy to sop up any accumulation and wring it out after a long hours out on the water. Perhaps, I'll get to painting it with that seal type of paint mix if it gets any worse although I haven't noticed if it had thru years of off and on usage? I fixed up the trailer more than the old boat it came on. I replaced wiring with a new light kit, tires, bearings & grease of course and a new wench & line too...even spray painted it w/can spray paint to give a better look. BTW, I really have so very little $ in boat that I could care less if it sank anyway...that might give me an excuse to buy a bigger better boat, cheers 8-)

Marty, do they sell Flex Seal in NZ? Maybe you want to keep a can nearby in case the JB Weld ever fails. Ha. On a more serious note I’d love to see you put a steering wheel on and craft a linkage as it appears your boat was designed for one. All the best. Keep the videos coming!

Just a little tip, if you check the oil in the lower unit always remove the bottom screw. If there is water in the oil it will settle out in the bottom. The oil on top could look fine and the could still be water in it.

I have found that with small holes that don't experience a lot of pressure, is to use the metallic 2 part JB Weld and apply it from either inside or outside and form a nice round contact area while pushing some of the JB Weld thru to the other side and make sure both sides have good contact with the hull. Once hard, there is no way for the JB Weld can pop out as it might if only applied to one side

I have a old aluminum boat and some rivets are leaking. Hoping to coat the inside and possibily the outside. Im not a huge fan of flex seal...

Marty my dad gave my brother and I a little 12-ft aluminum boat that he used to use for pushing logs into the the chipper and the bottom on the backside was wore out so what we did is we pulled it out and pop the rivets loose and laid another piece of skin up to the first rib then use the original skin to put over the top of it then rerevited it then after we did that we soldered it we were able to find someone else soldering rod with a torch and heated up and melted in then after that we did what you did use epoxy paint and put two coats on it and I'm 64 my brother is 60 now for 61 in January and we're still using that boat with those repairs
