Vibrating roller saved from the scrapyard - hasn't run for years.. Will it start?

- I was offered an old vibratory roller that broke down about 20 years ago.
The owner was taking it to the scrap yard so I offered him scrap value and took it off his hands. The engine had been removed and partly dismantled so I expect it has major issues.. One man's trash is another man's.. trash?

"...but she didn't say anything about rollers" is a brave, brave thing to say. 😅
If she says no more engines then he'll probably bring back so 100-150 year old steam boiler powered device...
@@ElectroBotVideo Or a small rocket motor 😅
as long as it vibrates it's okay
Rollers paying for itself already
It's a lot easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission! I know quite well how that works. Done it for 54 years with the same sweet lady. Really enjoy all your videos. Thanks 🇨🇦
That counter balance of tyres and heavy frame while releasing the roller was classic.
It was like launching a ship
Marty's ingenuity on display. That's why I love this channel.
I was more impressed with the expertise provided by his boss. Kid is going to be a rockstar mechanic jack of all trades. Best part was the HP printer fix.
"The missus said no more tractors, but she didn't say anything about rollers". Marty living dangerously I see...
"I told the kids to put away their bikes, next time maybe they will listen"
You've almost got a complete set of road engineering stock - bulldozer, road grader, front loader, excavator, tractors with different light grading attachments, now a vibratory roller! Just remember to calculate how much money it would cost for a contractor to come out to grade the road, or smooth it with the roller, or repair the road after a culvert's washed out. When you get home, kiss your sweetie and say "I just saved us $2500 (whatever the cost would have been) with that roller! Let's go out for dinner!" That has kept me in the clear through 35 years of dragging all sorts of abandoned tools and machinery home for repair.
I worked at Listers in Dursley 60 odd years ago, manufacturing these engines. They're difficult to break. My favourite though was the water cooled CS range which were made by Listers from 1930 until the 1970's. Then the Indian manufacturers took over and are still making them, substantially unchanged - a 92 year production run - so far!
When you find a winning formula you don't want to deviate like we do in the usa....we could screw up a perfectly good product with stupidity and over thinking..
I’ve been told they’re illegal over here in the USA so people import them as air compressors and add the fuel system later. They’re supposed to be extremely efficient as a generator and they aren’t picky about what oil you use as fuel.
@@dewaynek8591 Another reason to shit can the EPA...If not bought and paid for, I surmise we'd have 100mpg cars & light pickups.
I did a course there back in the 80's when I worked for BT on power maintenance. We used them in small exchanges for emergency generation. 😀
I grew up in Cam before moving to Canada.
Always exciting to get a notification of a Marty T vid. Marty is the kiwi MacGyver.
That fixed it... Looks like the gunked up injector pumps were what stopped it going originally. Then the monkeys got inside and made it a permanent stop. Luckily they left all the spare bits inside. Reminds me of a "jumping Jack" trench rammer I picked up a few years ago. It ran, but pretty awful. The problem was water had run down the vertical shaft on the carburettor and gunked up the jets & float bowl. Easy to fix, however the monkeys had been there before me and mislaid a speed control linkage. Ordered one from the States and it runs really well now. Handy bit of kit. Keep up the good work. You are an inspiration to us all.
Awesome old unit! Its really similar to my small red one. I really like the tag along rollers! its funny I'm working on a roller video right now myself when I saw your video!
Sweet looking foreward to watching it
G'day mate, thanks for stopping by. Yes there have been a lot of comments about your roller on this vid.. seems like we have similar tastes in clapped out machines 😂
I love watching both Marty T and Diesel creek videos. Thank you guys for satisfying my need for this sort of hands on material. As a New Zealander living in Australia, you feed my inner need for home, Marty, and Matt, well, you are a hero my friend. I watch my UA-cam feed for new stuff from both of you. Please don’t stop, even when your wives say enough is enough. So very many guys like me just love what you do and that you take the time and effort to allow us to come along for the ride. You guys, both of you, not only provide GREAT material, but are great ambassadors for where you’re from! Thank you!
@@MartyT soo true you both got the same taste 😆
this is the collab we need!
Mum said no more tractors. Son to Dad, "I miss Mum."
But mum is not here😂😂
That was awesome. I love how you bring back to life machines others gave up on. Good old kiwi ingenuity
This is a Marty T video. The answer to his question is always "Yes!" And we all come along for the ride 😆😅
For what it's worth, you are an inspiration Marty. Perhaps you edit out the errors and the expletives, but you prove once more one man's scrap is another man's workhorse.
Great to see the young padewan so keen to help the master too.
"expletives" go hand in hand, with our Kiwi & Aussie cousins.. 🤣🤣🍺🍺🍻🍻👍
At least he's watching, tho I do detect some fem clap trap he'll need to dispose of to obtain Marty's patience.
Well the previous owner put it in the too hard basket. The Marty came to the rescue, I knew you could do it, bloody awesome
The wonderful thing about those vibrating mechanisms is, even if they're off kilter in a major way they still get the job done, after all, they're supposed to be unbalanced. Clapped out bearings? Just adds more vibration.
Any vibration is most welcome. :))
Exactly what I thought when I saw that bit.. MORE POWER!
So its faulty when its running smooooooth
As the Beach Boys song says, "Good Vibrations"!
Just another episode of Marty T, Machine Whisperer! LOL! Ok, that's the last time for that. I'm running down the same mental checklist you are as what to check for. It just seems so natural to us that it may be amazing to someone else is a bit weird. I had a friend ask if there was anything I couldn't fix. I popped up and said, "A broken heart. But I'm working on it.". She just laughed.
Matt @ Diesel Creek had an expensive run-in with a large towable vibrating roller. Check him out.
Cheers
Terry
Coming up, the worlds smoothest driveway.
Yes he needs another one . So dividing it up is easy !!!
Until the next monumental flood - then we can watch Marty get it back into shape - always a pleasure! Thanks, Marty!
As long as you have better luck than Diesel Creek did with his you should be all good! The shaft the roller rides on had sheared off on his 😵. Looks like she's in decent shape!
😂🤣😂😂, his was and is a nightmare, hopefully as you say Marty's is an easier fix.
Hell yeah that roller he had was a real mission . Dieselcreek is cool too .
Diesel Creek and Marty T. are the only two nutheads I'm following. Not sure why though.
my first thought damn he got unlucky
Marty , I can see your wife reviewing your machinery collection contract. Good on ya mate.
That's about when the biggest weather storm hits. Marty to the rescue. She will have second thoughts about getting rid of hubby's collection.
Marty has all of the machines needed to fix all of his property and some.
An industrial vibrator how could any woman be disappointed with something so versatile. Good work.
Omg Marty!! The smile that came across my face when that engine fired up!!!!😂💯👍👍👍
Once again, you work your magic!!!!
You practice real TOUGH LOVE ... I mean if I left my bike in the yard as a kid I would be told to go get it and receive a stern talking too... But you mate .. just flatten the bike ... 😝
Another old piece of machinery lives to see another day. Good on ya mate!
When I still lived with mom, I fixed everything. Finally, after I left home, she got some new stuff.
For something that almost met its maker, that didn't fight too hard. I can see it getting a lot of use. 👍
Glad to finally see a lister on the channel although she's very tired they still run when they are totally worm out have restored a lot of these and when in good order you can stand on the starting handle and not bounce over compression thank goodness for decompressers or electric start if your really posh! That pushrod wants a cheeky straighten out with a hammer though depending which series it is some of the smaller ones have aluminium injector sleeves that have asbestos washers in so watch out if you ever fiddle with bits like that! Parts availability here in the UK is excellent for most of the engine types Sleeman and Hawkins are the biggest stock holder of parts but plenty of others as well! Might make a strong candidate for some serious tinkering time to restore her back maybe? Thanks again for the super content always enjoy a Marty T notification coming up! 😁😁👍
Good advice thanks mate, my first time playing with a lister, they are cool old engines. I can imagine popping around in a lister powered boat would be great fun
@@MartyT I love playing with old listers! My favourite past time! Have had plenty through my hands over the years! My particular favourite is the H range big twins I have a 2.1 Litre HR2 lister diesel that powers a 68ft steel narrowboat definately nothing better than put putting along in a boat with a Lister inside! 😁😁😁
@@MartyT I did a lot of my carpentry apprentiship @ Mt Cook (mid 70's) building a big shed for the Ministry of Jerks up on Blackburch Fan. My boss got a hold of a Lister powered mobile concrete plant. My job was to load, mix, tip & look after the mixer. That Lister just ran all day long.
@@MartyT Wheres your home projects.
Knackered engine? Marty comes along “no it’s not knackered”😂😂👍🏻🏴👍🏻
The first thing that came to my mind when I clicked on the video was “I wonder what the Mrs. will say?” then you made that clear. LMAO, still chuckling. It's funny how they keep quiet when the little projects we bring home end up doing the job and saving us money! 😀
Your Controlled Dismount is a stroke of genius!
How ever long these are, they are never long enough matey = ) Hope you and the fam are all safe and well. All best and thank you !
Brilliant Marty T!....nothing but respect for your "can do" attitude
Marty, youre a bloody shaman of old engines and machines.
Nothing better than the obligatory destruction of random items such as bikes and printers. Keep up the good work mate 👍
Just absolutely fascinating entertainment right here! Love it man
This one had a bit of everything, it felt like I was sitting in your yard having a beer while you gave the new old motor a go over. Wonderfully fun.
Wow we got a three for one today. You fixed a vibrator roller machine, a bicycle and a computer printer. Well done. 🙂
Perfect night to watch Marty work his magic on some machinery and have a cold snack! Best ending ever!
Back in my teenage years there were a few smaller fishing boats at Westport with Lister diesel motors. As kids we spent many weekends fishing off Westport with local boat owners, didn't get paid, just took some fish home for the family. One or two boats had small single banger petrol engines that i went out on. No life jackets in those days, how risky was that, especially coming back in over the bar during a surge. Still here, i guess it wasn't my time Mart, LoL.
Not sure why anyone's missus would complain about a vibrating roller tbh.
Great tool in any mans arsenal
Love seeing these old girls coming back to life.
Another classic engine revival from marty, bringing old machinery out of retirement and back to work. Awesome.
Wow, I thought this was going to be an engine autopsy video after that intro, not a will it run!
My favorite part of this video was your fancy power winch...tires on a pallet...GENIUS!!!
That opening statement bloody gold 😂
Of the 563 channels I'm subscribed to on youtube your channel is my absolute favourite.
I bet you say that to all the channels
@@MartyT - For what you do, you are Number One. 👍
I'm guessing that one day you'll come across an abandoned tar roadmaking machine 😂😂😂
A customer brought in an old towable winch with one of these Lister engines on it, seized solid it was. The sump had an inch of sludge in it, too. It must have been sitting outside for years. I got it free in 20 mins by taking the cylinder studs out and turning it over with the cylinder slapping against the crankcase until it came free. It runs perfect now. They are built to last forever.
I think Marty could fix a broken heart if he could get the parts. Great job.
You mean there's a smooth bit of the driveway somewhere? It's good to see these old machines having a new life...
He has a road grader, two bulldozers, three front-end loaders, and a back blade. Frankly, I'm surprised there's a rough patch left.
The missus said no more tractors but she didn't say anything about vibrators 😅😅😅😅😅
Some people only see lemons but others like ourselves see a victory to enjoy in fixing the rejected.
Love those old Lister diesels (& the Gardners). Great to see it running again!
Nice printer repair
Thanks mate
Laughed out loud at Marty's printer repair. Another really good one Marty!
I love that David Brown, had one just like it but she burned up in a barn fire it was a wonderful workhorse for us for many many years. Love from Alabama USA love your uploads man keep them coming!
Come for the Lister, stay for the good dad moments. 😊
Ha ha! Fixed it!😅 Marty the roller would probably be even better with more weight.. say 3 or 4 barrels of water tied to it 😊 and if you wet the area before you roll it, it’ll compact better.
We had a lot of Listers powering generator sets in our rental fleet. Good bullet proof engines I must say.
I'm really pleased you gave it a good go & brought that Lister back to life. You've rescued it twice! Once from scrapping & then got him running.
Super pleased to see you do it fella 👍
BEST ENDING EVER!!! A little Office Space kinda joy there.
Another epic video from 'Marty the Diesel Whisperer'!! 😁
Marty showing his magic touch with old machines again... dang you can fix anything !
Cheers from Texas * * * 🤠
Nice ending. It's amazing some engines work after 100 years, but you are lucky to get 10 years out of electronic junk. It makes you wonder which is the more "green" option.
the bit that always gives me anxiety is switching it off after I got it running....I always feel like it's never going to run again...Nice job
Haha yes they can be a challenge to get running especially on cold days
Brilliant. Take a look at "Diesel Creek", Matt ( Botcher, but entertaining) had loads of trouble with his, heap of junk, vibrating roller.
By the way, as a young kid growing up in Marlborough I worked in the shearing sheds and a lot of the sheds ran Lister engines, and they are more than likely still there, they were an honest reliable engine back in the day🙏🙏🙏
Brilliant video Marty! You're a bloody GENIUS mate no other word for it and don't use that word lightly!
That end was funny as hell! (Says it all about stuff today!)
You saved ANOTHER Great USEFUL VALUABLE piece of machinery from the crusher! Yet AGAIN! It's BRILLIANT!!
I have said it for years, as a species (generally speaking aside from exceptions) I TRULY believed we have devolved and ARE DEVOLVING! Things just aren't made like that to last anymore.. so much knowledge lost by us as individuals (aside from the exception like yourself..) old engineering, stoneworks woodworking and joinery all without or with minimal machinery that we can't reproduce today with all the so called technology we have! Ability to make and fix things etc and just survive without help!
Keep making great videos mate, passing the knowledge! Your legacy in the future will be more valuable than you know, I'm sure of that!
You should compile all your videos in a tutorial series and sell them in the form of DVDs /Books etc tangible hard copies that can't be lost when the web/internet gets switched off! Something people can buy to refer to without being online..
I'm sure it'll make you a fortune I'd buy it for sure! Like an all encompassing How to "Survival guide"! Just an idea but you've done all the hard work. Be a shame for it to be lost if UA-cam shuts down internet etc.
Cheers from London 👍😎🏴
I...I can't believe you got that running. I fast forwarded the video after I saw how messed up the internals were because I thought, "this will be one of those autopsy videos of a dead motor". But no! It's alive again....I'm floored
I am always hooked how chilled out Marty is when working on a machine that seems too far gone but always makes 'em come back to life.
Always a fan bro 💪❤ from Papua New Guinea
Those lister diesels are amazing little motors that don't die.
We'll mate, nice to see a clever bugger at work. Thanks 😊 for the intertamant.
Marty the Marlborough magician .... that A4 printer now does posters and the kids BMX bike fits the narrowest of mountain trails.
Mate you really really know your stuff what a great job I’ve seen this about 2/3time and it still love it.
Thanks again for another great repair video Marty 👍🏻🏴
How many of us have wanted to take a roller to our printers thanks for all of us Marty.
Marty, I missed your beautiful dog.
You found one! Good on ya mate. That surely will make good work of that rough shale rock on your roads. Just remember: slow and easy is the way. (Great for printer repairs too............😎)
Hi M , i needed to rest up sore back , so Fri 30, 6 ,23 came and went it was a V wet day in Edinburgh Scotland so i watched you tinkering with the Hough , and the Lister engine roller your Nick Name should be Marty the engine whisperer, because I think off camera i think you talk to them and you tell them after iv tinkered with you you better run or your going to the scrapman . I do the same thing with all kind of small machinery, grass cutters all makes , Sthil strimmers chainsaws hedge cutters , then all else in between, keep making videos Marty so much more entertaining than the TV Stan. Oh an by the way you did an excellent job of refurbishing the double wheel trailer .
A salvage metal boat with a recovered scrap Lister sounds like a really cool video series. You are the best MechroMancer in NZ!!!
Tusen takk for god underholdning 👍😅👍
I really enjoyed this one. I used to live close to where many parts originated, so I was warming to know that they were still likely to do the work for someone. When the video started, I wondered if it was there with a chance, then I saw it was a Lister, so though, yes Marty will get it going. After careful, thoughtful work, it fired up, and was ready to fix what you needed. The video was thoroughly enjoyable, thank you.
They didn't scrimp on metal in that engine. Thanks for the video!
The little fella sure is a character all in his own
Amazing mind you have Marty!
The home office printer.. the only thing Marty refuses to fix 😝
I’m glad I saw the very end. Much satisfaction with the repair of the printer.
Unloading the roller by chaining it to a skid of tires pulled in a change of direction? Brilliant! That's why I love this guy. He could start a Model T at the bottom of the ocean.
“Hey babe the printers stopped working again”
Must terminate printer with extreme prejudice 😂😂😂😂
"Office Space", anyone? 😉
Merry Christmas everyone can hardly wait to see what you bring home next keep safe
That last few seconds was the best reason yet for fixing up old civil engineering equipment!
I like the new feature: "How flat can it be?" The leaky engine will just help keep the dust down. Your supervisor is doing a fine job. Great video! Thanks!
Helps to stop Rust too...
Awesome job my Printer stopped working to :)
All I can say is Wow!!!
I love the way you eased the roller off the trailer! LOL
I got all excited seeing the old girl start up,nice work my man👍
MARTY; YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!
The best erosion mitigation tool on the farm now mate. Those roads will pack like sealed ones now..as for the printer, I agree..
Never in any doubt that you were gonna get that wee roller working.....🏴
The ending made me smile didn’t see that coming way to set the bar for office space
A mighty fine machine!
I had a good idea what was wrong with that lister before you lifted of the trailer it’s about the only thing iv seen go wrong with them seized injector pumps with sitting abit of diesel and a heat gun brings them round. You can pull the injector’s and dismantle and clean the nozzle and lap them with some brasso to get the spray pattern back. It may improve starting etc. Just Leave the injector spring tension well alone if you do pull the injectors
