- Union Berlin have surprised everyone with their rapid rise in German football. From playing in the second division to competing in Europe in just three seasons, they have mastered the "Art of Overachieving". So how have they done it? Through astute transfers, smart tactics and a strong connection with their fanbase. Like Premier League winners Leicester City and Euro 2004 champions Greece before them, Union have found a way to overachieve and outplay teams with far larger resources. This is their Bundesliga fairytale.

Union Berlin just made the impossible possible. What they did in recent years was out of this world from where they came, and now they are even topping the Bundesliga. Last season they nearly finished top 4.
This is what football does!! Throws-up such wonderful {and inspiring} stories every now and then.
Stuttgart became the stepping stone for Die Eisernen in May 2019 thanked to away goal rule in playoff.

in second season, they qualified UECL after they defeated RB franchise club in may 2021
In third season they almost qualify UCL despite they done the double against RB franchise club and let go of Kruse and Friedrich in 2022

@@killuatokarev1514 possibly one of the most underwhelming teams in the Bundesliga and I’m a Liverpool supporter
How are Hertha that much worse than Union, when they’ve been Buli regulars for years and Union have been in the league for a few seconds, comparatively?
When you literally give blood to save the club and give time and energy in building the stadium, then it's not only a club anymore, it's a family and the stadium is your house.
Awoniyi was absolutely class for them. I hope he does well for Forest this season
Awoniyi’s departure provide union fund to recruit more decent players and they also achieve surplus in summer transfer
If he scores more than 5 times I would be surprised. Premier League is not the farmers' league like Bundesliga.

The football club that I have supported over a lifetime has attempted to use a similar approach, but with less success - Norwich City FC in England. I loved this video, and hope that Union go from strength to strength.
Norwich is a bad comparison
Ya dude. Norwich isn't even close. You guys can't even stay up for one season. These guys are playing European football.
Yeah because a club from a capital city like Berlin with only two major clubs compared to a mid sized city in East Anglia is the same.

Regarding Union Berlins success: I am so happy for Urs Fischer, who was one of my favourite players of my local football club during my childhood. Would have loved to see a game in Berlin when I was there a few months ago, but at that time they were playing in a different city.

@@jmp9035 just because they have more fans doesn't mean that the city is blue when their club has been useless for the majority of their history. As a long time FC Basel fan, i can safely say Urs Fischer is one of the best coaches i've ever seen at a "lower level". He won us the domestic double with an aging squad, meanwhile his direct replacement struggled to even fight for the title. He's an incredible character and deserves all the praise he's gotten and will continue to get when Union inevitably break into the domestic Top 4.
came to say this. Fischer managed to pull off the impossible at times. Basel had beaten teams no one thought they could and some of the players that did good under him ended up becoming really high level players.
It's 13 September 2022 they are top of the table in Bundesliga

This is truly a club of the people
The sky can only be the limit
And now they're targeting Maitland Niles! Such an elite transfer team.
The fact the Bundesliga lacks a team like this, probably means they will stay there, as a new 4th Power in the Bundesliga.
There is the Big Cash Club that uses its power and take the best players from the local teams. Bayern Munich.
There is the Team that has the best Youth Development, so good that European Powers constantly try to take their players. Borussia Dortmund
There is the Corporate Team that uses its Scouting and Brand to get talent for cheap from their own feeder clubs. RB Leipzig.
And finally there is the Traditional Team that remembers Old Football and its origins are Working Class.
If Union Berlin manages this properly, they could become the Liverpool of the Bundesliga, eventually becoming a Giant of their own but with a unique culture different to the other Big Clubs.
Wow
currently first place in Bundesliga
please remind me of this comment in June of next year when they have pulled a second Leicester

Union may not have the wealth that Bayern or Dortmund have but they are smart in recruitment and management. Despite other Bundesliga clubs took advantage on them by signing their valuable players in lower price but they can find a better replacement

I hope Union Berlin wins Bundesliga and advances to the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League group stage ahead of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund this season. The Iron Ones (Die Eisernen), however, they'll win the competition and qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup.
Them reaching 5th place is both a blessing and a curse for the Bundesliga.
Union Berlin have embarrassed Schalke 04 and other fallen giants of German football by quietly going about their business in an efficient way. 👏👏
Hopefully Union Berlin keeps this up and end Bayern's Bundesliga streak. One day. Just one day.
Union did survive from the age that stasi dominated the football through coercive approaches. Bayern is way different with BFC Dynamo, Bayern’s owner is not the head of stasi and bayern doesn’t need to use coercive approach to win 10 consecutive seasons
Can you accept a scottish celtic fan? I think this is my German club the history is incredible
I always wonder if the Bundesliga was meant 4 Bayern Munich. Even if the likes of Borrusia Dortmund are 20 points ahead, it's like they try so much to give the title to Bayern as if they were bought off. Rival teams even sell their best players to Bayern, it's so strange. U can't see that in Premier League eg Mane/ Salah from Liverpool to Man U or Man City, Laliga eg Barca selling Messi to Real Madrid or Benzama from R. Madrid to Barcelona, Serie A or Ligue 1. But you see clubs like Leverkusen, Dortmund (great Bayern rivals) etc selling Lewandosky, Mazundic or other best players to Bayern. Every season you just know the title is for Bayern. Hope Union Berlin will change this trend. That what makes foot ball very interesting.
Bayern munich is similar to chairman Tanabe from Japanese manga One Outs.
He used the reason of 'lending a hand for teams that have financial difficulties instead of making these team to liquidate themselves' to make their signing of ace player reasonable
Barca signed Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, Van Persie joined Man UTd from Arsenal. Gael Clicky, Bacary Sagna, Adebayor and Nasri joined Man City from Arsenal. Chelsea just signed Sterling.
Ajax, Leicester, Monaco, Porto, Greece, Atalanta, Villarreal now that's the beautiful GAME. It's time finally Germany has a futbol Powerhouse from it's Capital City like ROME - As Roma, LONDON - Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, MADRID - Atletico/ Real Madrid, PARIS - PSG, PORTO - Fc Porto etc.
You can’t really put Ajax in there, they have a rich history and have constantly won things
Porto isn't Portugal's capital. It is Lisbon so either Benfica or Sporting are their representation
